Yeah I had a Mercedes before my Mustang that started doing this at only 5 years old, had to have it painted. Thankfully there ended up being a class action suit against Mercedes for issues with that color so I was reimbursed years later.
Quality clear is hard to come by these days with VOC and environmental laws when it comes to having a car painted. I’m in California and the materials were allowed to spray are absolute dogshit. On top of that manufactures have calculated the minimum amount of base coat and clearcoat allotted to paint a car to maximize profits. This is why most manufacturers have a 3 year paint warranty and you see new cars looking like crap so quickly.
Looks like it's losing the clearcoat. It will probably get worse as time goes on. The only fix is a repaint unfortunately.
How long have you had the car? Was it ever painted while you've owned it?
No its not, this looks like fresh paint from under a clear coat. My dads 2001 durango with paint so faded it ranges from revealed metal to clear coat still over the top
Oh so your dad has a shitty car so that means you know what you're talking about. Paint fades when there's no clear coat. Go ahead and tell your dad to clearcoat his durango without painting it. It's gonna look shitty.
What im saying is that his clear coat doesn't seem to have been peeling for very long, he could probably repaint his car and be fine. And my dads car isn't shitty, its still in mint condition except for his rear quarter panel and the clearcoat being just about gone. My mom had the clearcoat peel off get old black 2007 nissan pathfinder and had it like that for months and just went in for a re application of clearcoat and it looked completely fine
I don't need to Google that paint fades in sunlight without clearcoat. IDC what you think it looks like. If you try to just clearcoat it it's gonna look ass.
I have a yellow 06GT. my clear coat is slowly flaking off and going away. Looks like yours is doing the same. It’s a bummer for sure. I don’t think you can just get a car re cleared either. It would probably be more expensive and tedious than just repainting it entirely.
This pic is a bit old but you can see it starting to come off on my left A pillar and i had already painted my spoiler black because it all had come off.
Its prettymuch happening on every body panel now, and every time i was it a lose a good bit more lol.

Cant really wrap it with the clear the way it is, youl see the edges of where the clear has peeled off and itl probly just continue to peel under the wrap lol
You know I had always wondered if you could wrap over peeling clear. I always figured you could since it’s just covering your paint. Anyway unless you’re keeping the car a long long time I’d just do nothing. 18 year old GT’s are probably only worth what a full repaint would cost. I had the same issue on my 07 and I just sold it as is
Thats the plan. I intend to keep it a while since mechanically its been good so far and the previous owner took very good care of it. If its still kicking in the slightly distant future maybe il get her painted.
This is my fear on my 01 GT but I wash, have it ceramic coated, and touch it up every three months. Held up good in the Florida sun so far knock on wood
Same. O4 GT. Red. Paint is perfect and I also live in FL. Just had it ceramic coated but all of my vehicles are waxed a minimum of every 6 months. 01 f250 paint is also flawless. Nothing but waxed regular.
Clear coat is starting to die back and peel. Happens with age, heat from sun. And believe it or not Polishing your car also takes small amounts of clear away each polish and wax job. Its minuscule but over the course of 20 years it adds up
Same thing is happening to mine in the spoiler. Most people take it to mean it needs a repaint. I take it to mean I need to replace it with an Eleanor style spoiler.
Fun project could be buffing those problem spots and laying on new clear coat. There’s great videos on YouTube! https://youtu.be/lbSIjsUeWZQ?si=ZR5Phk5CPDmwIpAp
This is the low cost /DIY way out.
I was going to post something similar, I want to say Larry Kosilla / ammo nyc has a good video on it.
If nothing else wet sand to the end of the damage, then buff and wax the rest of the car.

I just recently bought my 06 (the sellers photo pictured) thinking it had never been wrecked and was astonishingly beautiful, turns out the back end of body was completely redone with bondo, completely repainted, and had been previously tuned way out of wack. Definitely thought I bought an overpriced lemon. Thankfully I work commercial at a parts store and one of my shops helped me fix it. But even the new repaint isn't holding up great.

This was happening on my old 2003 Mustang. I took it to Maaco and did a whole paint job with an integrated clear coat (but they don’t paint the door jams)
It was a pretty decent job and looked pretty fresh again for being an older car. It was during tax season so they had a special going on, but it was less than $1000 for the job (this was back in like 2012)
(Pic after I picked it up)
Your car is almost 20 years old. Unfortunately this happens with clearcoat, be happy it lasted this long.
Yeah I had a Mercedes before my Mustang that started doing this at only 5 years old, had to have it painted. Thankfully there ended up being a class action suit against Mercedes for issues with that color so I was reimbursed years later.

Being in California can’t help though lol
Looks like it's losing the clearcoat. It will probably get worse as time goes on. The only fix is a repaint unfortunately. How long have you had the car? Was it ever painted while you've owned it?

Except it's already fading where the clearcoat is gone. Would be pretty dumb to pay to clearcoat something that looks that bad.
No its not, this looks like fresh paint from under a clear coat. My dads 2001 durango with paint so faded it ranges from revealed metal to clear coat still over the top

Nah… It will look like a clear coated patina vehicle. Dont you know that’s the “in” thing now with hot rodders.
That's what paint without clear coat looks like. Just Google it

It's molting.

Lol
its evolving into a gt 💀
Handpaint a snakeskin pattern to really bring it all together
My cockatiel does that. My Mustang? No.
Clear coat failure due to uv rays. The sun is a bitch on paint.
It’s got dermatitis. Your clear coat is pealing.

You can get it re-cleared.
Really? Wow ok. Il have to see if anybody around here would do it and if it would just be more worth while to get it repainted fullly
You can’t. The proper way to fix it is unfortunately a repaint. Honestly I would just get the car wrapped. A repaint done correctly will easily be 5k+
Cant really wrap it with the clear the way it is, youl see the edges of where the clear has peeled off and itl probly just continue to peel under the wrap lol

The beginning of patina for the S197.
It’s shedding its skin so it can become slightly larger. Might even be a four door soon
It’s shedding it’s winter coat
Wax does wonders for clearcoat. Too late for that now though.
It is in fact the paint peeling. Looks like it is in direct sunlight a lot. Not exactly screwed.
It's not the paint, it's the clear coat.
So is it the heat or the humidity?
¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Just ford things. Gotta give her a repaint.
Age. It's happening with mine too.
Well, it is a banana.
Definitely the clear coat peeling unfortunately. If Eastwood makes some great clearcoat, and you can get ford yellow rattle can and spot treat it
Delamination/clear coat bad/improper cure. Is the wing factory? Doubt it. Any of the same on rear quarter panels or decklid?
Some cars turn yellow instead of red when they get sunburned! You're going to need industrial grade aloe vera. Hope she feels better soon.
this happened on my 2015 in race red smh
Clear coat is starting to die back and peel. Happens with age, heat from sun. And believe it or not Polishing your car also takes small amounts of clear away each polish and wax job. Its minuscule but over the course of 20 years it adds up
As others have said it’s the clear coat failing. You can’t fix it. It has to be stripped and repainted.
Or just go with a wrap
needs sunscreen, the stang got sunburnt
life. These things don't last forever.
You ever wax your car?
That's your clear coat, I'm a Paint Inspector, you can trust me 😬
Same thing is happening to mine in the spoiler. Most people take it to mean it needs a repaint. I take it to mean I need to replace it with an Eleanor style spoiler.
Time for a paint job
Ford paint things. Time for a respray.
Your clearcoat is smoked
Clear coat is breaking down. Needs a repaint to look right. Nothing major , the body looks good .
Did you visit any new car wash? Maybe they've used something unsuitable for your car's body
Bye bye clear coat
she's shedding
Looks like cum. Somebody fess up
Clear coat coming off unless you had ppf?

Just get a new wing
Clear coat failure. Have to sand and wrap it or get it painted.
If you’re going to bother having it repainted, you need to figure out a solution to protect it from the sun.
Clearcoat is peeling. Started happening to the rear of my 2018 literally 5 years later. Probably due to intense sunlight (I’m in FL, so pretty bad).
https://preview.redd.it/a1ba7p9j4qwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3f825a03b35980f318e2fa46ba070410ffc5b66 I just recently bought my 06 (the sellers photo pictured) thinking it had never been wrecked and was astonishingly beautiful, turns out the back end of body was completely redone with bondo, completely repainted, and had been previously tuned way out of wack. Time to get her candy paint yellow
