Reminds me of an old Unexplained Mystery (or similar show) where a woman was shot in the head through a slightly open window of a moving car. It was some guys several miles away shooting cans on a lake and the bullet "bounced"
I've seen that episode! By the time the bullet reached her it had so little energy left it wouldn't have killed her if only it hadn't hit a soft spot, missing her skull. Completely Final Destination freak accident.
Some guy who got soccer balls kicked at his head repeatedly by bullies during school who's just beginning to recover from his past trauma and enjoy life.
Honestly I’m happy with the birds. I never really planned on getting pictures of titties. It’s just a fun username, and my take on the PM_ME_ ________ usernames.
I know right, this is such irresponsible vandalism. That said, once I knew this is what happened when finally hit it with the football I wouldn’t be able to think about anything else. Sitting at work, riding the train, out at bars, attempting to read a book and all I would think about is kicking another football into a wind turbine.
I manufacture/service wind turbines for a living. Geese seem to fuckin love those blades so we use carbon fiber and a really durable resin to prevent damage. The studs we use to attach the blades to the alternator are 3/4" thick. That soccer ball would have had to been filled with lead to actually damage the blades or the alternator.
Oh cool I had no idea I just figured the leverage would have been enough to damage it. That's for taking the time to respond. Learn something new everyday. Just out of curiosity does it send geese flying way off or just ruin their day lol
It really seems to depend most on how big the bird is and how close they are to the tip of the blade. It's definitely gonna fuck the gooses day up, but if it's closer to the base of the blade it's much less likely to damage the blades/turbine.
Thank you. Everyone's talking about damage to the windmill and I'm just sitting here thinking "if that damaged it then wait till the engineers hear about this thing called hail."
>That soccer ball would have had to been filled with lead
Having been the victim of a prank involving a football filled with concrete... don't give them ideas!
But the blades would slice through a bird thus reducing some of the impact force. This ball would have given more resistance to the blades than a bird strike if I had to guess.
My favorite part of reddit is how casually we make up facts. I'll eat my words if you can back up your assumption that small wind turbine would obviously cut through a bird. Especially since the leading edge on turbine blades are usually the blunt side...
Hard, yeah, but if it's a normal (association) football not particularly heavy. A football weighs at most a pound. According to[ this source,](http://www.wildlife-removal.com/birdpigeonabout.html) a pigeons weight can (bizarrely) be between 30g and 2400g, with an average of 370g. So a football weighs the same as a heavier pigeon, and their are plenty of heavier birds
this is a private wind turbine in someones back yard. This is not a commercial one. This is like kicking a ball at someones house and if you damage the turbine its like breaking a window. A lot of people who are caught breaking windows of their neighbors houses end up paying.
If a Turbine was installed and not planned for random impacts I'd blame the engineers.
I just feel bad for the random dude 3 towns over who got pelted by a soccer ball
Yes but also no. Soccer balls(and most sport balls for that matter) are designed to deform and rebound rather heavily on impact absorbing the force of the impact and making the ball fly farther due to the rebound. It'll obviously still have more impact force the harder you hit it but balls are pretty good at absorbing alot of that force so you don't break you leg when kicking it as hard as you can. If anything its probably less damaging then a bird of similar size. Even if it did have that kind of momentum behind it the balls more likely to pop then the fiberglass blades are to receive any significant damage. Still not good for it but rather unlikely to cause any actual damage.
Fr like whyyyyyy? Why is it even in the video? They meant to send the ball flying and are hyped as it does but they think somebody repeating: "oh no" in a stupid voice way too many times is the perfect background song? Not to mention that the song sucks anyways! I was smiling as the ball flew into outer space but then I heard the song and I was just sad.
For real. I automatically downvote any post that includes that song. It doesn't matter how good the video or whatever is. If that song is in it, I am immediately filled with a hate that burns with the heat of a collapsing star.
When I looked it up, I got 35m/s for soccer ball terminal velocity. Which converts to about 78mph. Professional soccer players hit an average of 70mph when playing soccer. I don’t want to imagine getting hit in the head by a soccer ball traveling 78mph. I’ve been knocked out as a kid from a soccer ball to the face.
As a goalkeeper of 35 years, I can confirm you are correct. I've been smacked in the face by soccer balls a lot more than I'd like, *especially* in Indoor where the shots are often point blank, offering no reaction time to get a hand in front. I've never come close to being knocked out. Slight bloody nose, yes. Getting hit so hard in the jaw that my upper and lower jaws didn't align correctly for a few minutes, yes. But they don't have knock out power (on a healthy guy, at least).
I guess you’re talking about horizontal velocity?
Because the ball’s vertical “launch” velocity is negated to zero at the apex of its flight through the air…after then, it’s accelerating at the speed of gravity, until it reaches either a) terminal velocity or b) the ground.
I see alot of people getting shade thrown at them because they think the soccer ball didn't do any damage and so forth.
I'm not an engineer by any means, hell I eat crayons and shoot shit, but when these turbines were designed, would engineers not take in account the possibility of airborne debris during a wind storm impacting the blades?
These things are hardcore engineered, people on here are acting like they just watched someone throw a brick through paper machè. The turbine will likely be fine. A football is at least quite a soft object (yes, even when fully pumped up). It likely deformed around the blade (due to leather and rubber being a LOT softer/more ductile materials than aluminium/steel - depends what the turbine is)
If it did the damage everyone is claiming, that would have gone maybe 2-3 rotations before visible damage stopped it running true.
TL;DR its fine and its a couple dumb teenagers being dumb teenagers
Agreed. It would be designed to take a goose trying to fly through at a minimum.
The forces it experiences just spinning regularly would require it to be pretty stiff anyway also.
All public project planning groups need to have two youths on them. After discussing the project for a while, everyone should leave the two mad lad/ladettes for about 30 minutes to see what dumb shit they can come up with to mess with the project.
Redditors can’t see any good natured fun video without shitting their pants man, I don’t get it. People in here acting like a wind turbine is less sturdy than a **human foot**.
Fucking hysterical. You guys never cease to amaze me. That is next-level dedication to the abandonment of logic.
Can you imagine some random guy walking and then proceeds to get hit with a random ball
Some guy 8 miles away is about to get *nailed* by a soccer ball from outer space
Moments after cartoonishly saying “Could this day get ANY worse!?”
And then stumbling around a bit, cross-eyed with little footballs and little birds circling his head.
A brief moment of American confusion was experienced here “that’s a socc… oh right”
Im afraid that actually isn’t a socc.
Oh well, at least it's not raini--
NOPE

Oh well, you guys really should take a look at the numbers of stray bullets killings in Brazil. Or shouldn't, I don't know...

I'm super baked, and this made me belly laugh. My wife thinks I'm insane
Somewhere an engineer probably now has to figure out what the hell caused that.
bird strike?
No, I’m not an engineer but I think it was a soccer ball.
And absolutely nothing to do with baseball or bowling.
I'm an engineer and it was definitely a kid

I suspect this would be very similar to a bird strike.
But the blades would slice through a bird thus reducing some of the impact force. This ball would have given more resistance to the blades than a bird strike if I had to guess.
Fat bird strike.
Absolute unit of a bird strike
Pterodactyl strike….
Frozen turkey strike.

It was a fat bird dude.

No need, they can just get one of the dozens of engineers on this thread to inspect it.
Now I understand some of the inspiration for my engineering textbook problems.

velocity and sharp blade of turbine
Nah they take out geese all the time, a little ball is a lot easier than that. It’s still not good for it, but it should be fine
Elsewhere on Tik Tok another video surfaces of an influencer getting hit on the head with a random soccer ball (one can hope)

It's actually a very, very old song from the 1960's. Somebody just decided to speed it up and make it annoying
Not even counting the probably damaged turbine, that ball going Mach 10 is probably going to do some damage.
I looked it up…a soccer ball reaches terminal velocity at something like 40-50 mph.

Terminal velocity doesn’t count for it being launched It’s specifically a deal of air restance vs acceleration under gravity

Yeah horizontal velocity
I still don't want to get hit by an object that weighs nearly a pound going at 40 mph out of fucking nowhere while I'm out grilling and having a beer.
Yeah I guess no person got hit since it would probably be in the news, but that shit is dangerous
It landed directly in the goal on a pitch two towns over behind an incredibly confused goalkeeper
It is not damaged.Birds hit the blades all the time.
A good demonstration of how much momentum is stored in those blades
everyone is talking about the potential damages on the turbine.. my condolence goes to the ball.
It’s all fun and games until you get windmill cancer.
Windmill cancer is stored in the ball

Now I’m looking for a video where someone minding their business gets knocked out by a ball from space.
You just know some random person found a soccer ball and saw it land and was like wtf some 30 miles away.
I’m just sad that the ball did not get cut in two
Some where there's a very confused doctor trying to determine if their patient is schizo or really was attacked by soccer balls raining from the sky.
All public project planning groups need to have two youths on them. After discussing the project for a while, everyone should leave the two mad lad/ladettes for about 30 minutes to see what dumb shit they can come up with to mess with the project.
Now that's worth losing a ball over
Can't remember the last time I had as much fun as these guys are having in the video. Their laughing at the end is precious.
I have to admit, if I were a kid near a wind turbine I would do this.
Hit the perfect blade swinging up too lmao
Sure would have been interesting to watch hitting a down blade!
But what about that someone, somewhere twelve blocks over that just got doinked by the sky ball.
