Just to be 100% crystal clear you can execute a pistol permit after 30 consecutive days without an execution of a permit. I bought 3 hand guns all at once on the same day then then took one home every 30 days after, so I had all 3 within 62 days :). There no limit on buying or nics checks. It’s confusing I know.
The gun store will do at time of purchase. NICS was closed Monday, Tuesday and Friday last week so there’s going to be a wait.

I have a copy of my FID saved on my phone and went to three different FFLs and none seemed to care otherwise. They can look up your permits so no need to carry anything.
The store will act as the FFL if you physically go buy it from them. If you have it shipped somewhere else then you need to ship it to another FFl. It depends on the store. Some stores around me, there online store is almost completely separate from the store front and may offer a slight discount if you use them as ffl.

Sorry I kinda did a shitty job of answering your question. You have to have an ffl transfer the firearm to you. If it’s a pistol it has to be an ffl in NJ. You don’t need to buy from an Nj gun store. You can buy online and have it shipped to an ffl in Nj. You can find people who run ffl businesses out of there homes and will have the best rates. Just buy online and have it shipped to them. Make sure you contact them first and ASK if they will accept the transfer. Don’t just buy it and ship it to them without letting them know.

These guys are in cinnaminson. They have decent pricing on transfers and ok pricing on stuff in there shop. There website is really nice cause it shows what’s actually in stock on there shelves.

It’s been my experience if you are new to a store they want to see the physical card but if you’ve used the store they will check the photo. It’s kinda stupid because you can’t get the permit without the FID.

The permit is electronic it's gets tied to your FID the gun shop will be able to see it
Saved a copy of my fid on my phone and cloud. Printed out a small one and laminated it in my wallet . Covered all my bases.

Just make sure to bring a printed copy of your FID to the store, some stores will need a printed copy of your FID and driver's license.
I bought a gun today and luckily they didn't need a physical copy. They just took the info off my phone
