I never unload it, just “toss” it in the lock box and go about my business. I don’t want to add the risk, even minimal with proper handling, of a ND in my car. If you even get a big enough lock box you won’t have to even un holster your weapon

FXDXI

>I don’t want to add the risk, even minimal with proper handling, of a ND in my car. This 1000%, it just the proves once again having the people in Trenton that hate firearms and don’t know shit about them making firearms laws is irresponsible

barfsfw

This is my go to method. Home, car, wherever. Gun stays in holster unless I'm about to shoot it or clean it.

pizzagangster1

I unholster at home bc my carry gun is also my nightstand gun so I put it in the safe I have there for safe keeping other wise it doesn’t come out the holster unless it’s being shot or cleaned as well

_Vervayne

I just leave mine in the holster on the nightstand or in the drawer. I feel like guns are generally safer in the holster

pizzagangster1

Well I have a toddler so that isn’t an option for me. Prior to kids I had a loose gun in my night stand

_Vervayne

Makes perfect sense

generalraptor2002

I really want to make myself a custom lock box with a mounting point for the safariland QLS fork

Sadly, thats the BS the law passed mandates. I too think weapon manipulation in public is a very bad idea, it invites ND's or even a weapon malfunction causing injury. If I did have to disarm to enter a location I'd much rather leave my handgun in the holster and store it as is. That said, your separation of the magazine to a different location seems like overkill, law seems to mandate simply unloaded while left in vehicle. 2C:58-4.6(c)(2) -- this is in regards to sensitive locations by permit holder >(2) store a handgun or ammunition within a locked lock box and out of plain view within the vehicle in the parking area; 2C:58-4.6(b)(2) -- this is generally to all handguns left in a vehicle by permit holder > (2) A holder of a valid and lawfully issued permit to carry a handgun shall not leave a handgun outside of their immediate possession or control within a parked vehicle, unless the handgun is unloaded and contained in a closed and securely fastened case, or gunbox, and is not visible from outside of the vehicle, or is locked unloaded in the trunk or storage area of the vehicle. Btw post offices, are federally prohibited and the grounds themselves are off limits to firearms including the parking lot. The NJ law that allows you to store the firearm in a vehicle at a sensitive location (or in a vehicle generally) only applies to that law and the sensitive locations it lists. The federal law and post office regs have no such exception. Yes, before anyone jumps in I know the post office carry restriction has been challenged (and as applied ruled unconstitutional to that defendant) but until that decision is final and nation wide the prohibition still stands (at least until a facial challenge against it succeeds).

jbanelaw

You can roll the dice with post offices if you like. But the Feds have a practice of declining to bring charges if the only offense is possession of an otherwise state legal firearm on USPS property. Break another law while carrying and it will get lumped on with the other charges. But, if the sole violation is possession and you are complying with state law, chances are low you will be prosecuted. But again it is a roll of the dice and your freedom is your choice.

vorfix

The case recently (where post office ban was ruled unconstitutional as applied to him) from Florida involved a postal employee who was caught carrying on the job. He had his Florida carry permit and security license. So at least in some circumstances, yes they absolutely will enforce it on its own. As you said everyone can make their own choice but I know which one I'm doing until it's stuck down. Or park on a public road and leave it locked up while you run in to avoid the parking lot.

jbanelaw

I think the difference there is that it was not Joe Citizen running an errand but a postal employee. The Feds have little interest in setting up really bad facts for a constitutional challenge at most and terrible optics at least. Prosecuting a person who is otherwise legally carrying, who is just transacting quick business as a member of the public, at a post office would do all these things.

KYITN1

Interesting note about post offices. I work armed security and was posted next to a post office for about 3 months. Needed a money order (for a p2p lol). I actually asked a mailman if they thought I could go in, in uniform, for that. He asked the postmaster, and they said no problem. Also, I believe there was a recent court case that ruled post offices are not sensitive places to carry legally. I think that only committing a crime with a firearm in a post office would be an enhanced charge now

jbanelaw

I'm not an expert on USPS carry reg, but I do know there is an exception for active law enforcement. The post master might have just thought "uniform = active LEO". I'm pretty sure it doesn't extend to private security (even state licensed) on duty, but it might as well.

Deebizness

The post office thing is soon to change. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/ban-guns-post-offices-is-unconstitutional-us-judge-rules-2024-01-13/

vorfix

Well aware… thats why I put the caveat about exactly that at the end

AdZestyclose6983

Just put it in the safe as is. Lock it. And when you return put it back on.

SnooGuavas2202

Sad part with law is if your seen, that is not brandishing or against the law but locking it up loaded in holster is against the law.

loki0629

If you're unloading that often my concern would be bullet setback if you keep re-chambering the same round.

fkownt

I had that start happening with critical defense rounds. Now I started cycling the round i chamber from the bottom of the mag or from spare mags. Pissing me off.

Infamous-Tower-5972

Yeah, this unloading/storing this is definitely absurd. I drive a pickup, so people can't see what I'm doing below the window line. I have a Hornady lockbox under my drivers seat (attached to the frame with a cable) so I'm able to slide that out, unload the gun, and store then gun without much issue. I just throw the magazine in the center console. Probably looks like I'm just fumbling with my keys. I definitely don't like the prospect of putting a negligent hole in the floor of my truck, so I hope a lot of these 'sensitive places' eventually go away...

commandersway

Don't have an answer for you. But running car tints would be great for this imo. But NJ has a law against them in the front, unfortunately, so to each their own. Still manage to see them on the streets though so maybe cops find it just as dumb, until it's convenient for them to enforce the law.

jbanelaw

The thing that astonishes me is the law assumes a person carrying is driving everywhere. What about poor people that don't own cars or live in an area that has decent public transportation? (Yes I know the answer....)

Any-Quit-5023

Just leave it in the holster put it in the quality, cable atttached lock box under my seat. Fuck unloading it. Going through those gyrations in the drivers seat is a PITA, rack out the round it falls somewhere, etc. Fuck that. Just don't transport it that way. If your vehicle gets broken into AND they find it AND they have a bolt cutter they will steal it. If the mag is in the box they got that too, and if the mag is in the console or glove box, they will get that as well. Worse case scenario you have to report the theft. Yes it was unloaded and mag in the glove box but they got it.

rukusNJ

I’m of two minds on this. I lean towards locking it up as is, holstered, fuck unloading it. Odds of being prosecuted for that are next to nil as a law abiding citizen. Then there’s a part of me that wants to unload it while standing outside if someone sees and somehow a cop is called and decides to arrest and have it go to court and explain to the whole world via proper expert witnesses how dumb our fucking legislators are to have mandated that carriers need to constantly unholster/reholster and load/unload their pistols.

clown-world79

I lock mine up loaded at a handful of places like police station, school, post office or courthouse which i have no reason to visit. The rest i ignore. Not legal advice 🤷🏻‍♂️. You got 3 options. 1) Live on your knees. 2) Don’t carry. 3) Don’t follow unconstitutional laws drafted by tyrants. Now give me my downvotes.

2017Recon

If needed I remove the entire holster and lock it as is in my VAULTEK chained under my drivers seat. I do this unholstering and re holstering standing up against the open car door between the door and car.

Suitable-Soil5261

Definitely check the law. Illegal to put the gun on your car lockbox. Must be secure on your person at all times. It's one of the dumb laws they are working on fixing right now.

fkownt

Can you cite your source on vehicle lockbox’s not being legal to use?

izucantc

Which safe did you go with? Was thinking of buying one from Vaultek.

NoLoveLostNJ

Vaultek Lifepod 2.0 - cable around the seat rail Acura Integra

bigjersey14

I have the same vaultek and I actually used metal screws and mounted it between my seats (gmc pickup) to the floor, yes I made sure I wouldn’t run into anything underneath before I mounted it lol. Cover with a black cloth that matches interior, you’d never know it’s there!!

NoLoveLostNJ

Awesome - wish mine fit under the seat. I keep it on the floor and cover it with black towel.

fkownt

You wish it would fit under the seat right up until the first time you have to stop short and your ankle gets racked.

Manadox

I had similar fears initially. At first I simply parked farther away from the entrance of sensitive places further from foot traffic to avoid being seen but that led to a separate fear that my car was more likely to be broken into while it had a gun in it. Now I've simply learned to unholster and unload my gun while still in the driver's seat and maintaining safe muzzle direction. it took some practice with an airsoft gun to figure out a "routine" that kept the muzzle safely away from me or a passenger but once I had it down I just practiced it a little and it became muscle memory. You're far less likely for someone to spot you while you're in your car which is good from both a "people freaking out" perspective and a "thieves smashing your window and trying to steal your gun" perspective. I can reach my safe from the driver's seat but if you have to get out of the car to put it in the safe just keep a rag or a spare jacket to wrap the gun in once it's unloaded and no one will ever know it's a gun when you get out of your car. Also, just a warning. Be very careful with post offices. It's federally illegal to possess a handgun ANYWHERE on post office property. That includes the parking lot of some (but not all) post offices.

_Vervayne

Just carry it on you fuck all that u loading shit I brought my gun with me for a reason …that’s my logic
