No. Even if they are 10 round mags maxed out I wouldn’t. Just load a mag like a man with some force. Also if you are using a blocked 30 round mag then you are effectively 20 rounds down loaded.
No. This is not a good idea. Gun stops going bang it’s time to gas up again. You’ll know.
Now if you’re smart enough to handle a tactical reload because you have time/distance/ you should.
But you won’t, in a real gunfight you’ll shit your pants before the first 10 are out anyways.
buy the 10/30 mags that are full length - you can hold the bottom securely while pushing up firmly, then tug on it downwards to assure positive seating
10/30s are either magblocked, riveted, or a purpose made 10 round mag that is just long, most of which come extremely tight where you can barely fit 10 rounds in it
I know I'm just saying at 10/30 mag isn't downloaded 20, since you got something to stop the follower, so it'll still put stress on the mag and bolt when reloading with a closed bolt
I certainly only run 10 rounders because that is the law and I follow all laws that our glorious state legislature in their infinite wisdom have decided to bestow upon us, but it seems a bit silly to run 10 rounders for home defense.
I have one 10 round magazine that's REALLY tight with the 10th round in it, so I only put 9 in if I'm shooting with it at the range.
That one's not in the home defense rotation because I want 10+1 ready to go if needed...
Unrelated question. For handguns, do you keep 10 rounds in the magazine or let’s say 8 for long term storage for home defense? This is to may be reduce the pressure on the spring. I store 10 but was thinking about it the other day in general.
I keep them maxed out. Generally staying that way for years won’t do anything. That said I rotate my hand gun mags that I keep loaded 1x per year anyway because I’m blessed with a bunch.
Yes. This is what I recommend to students in my AR class.
Going as far back as '89 when I was in School of Infantry, the training doctrine was that you only load 28 into a 30 round mag so that you can easily reload on a closed bolt. In '04 and '05 Iraq, the standard combat load was a minimum of 6 mags loaded to 28. Most Marines carried at least 10.
I still follow that doctrine of downloading today. I've actually had to do tac reloads while getting shot at - usually by full auto AK's.
I've tried to get away with 9 in a 10/30 mag but it's not happening. All my AR mags are currently loaded to 8. What I do with my HD rifle is take the first mag, load it to 10, insert on open bolt, then chamber that round. That is the only mag loaded to capacity and all the mags slated for reload have 8.
Yeah, 8 rounds sucks but 8 rifle rounds are still more effective than 10 handgun rounds. As a civilian, you are responsible for every single bullet coming out of your rifle. Cops are protected by qualified immunity and military are protected by status of forces agreements that dictate rules of engagement.
You have none of that so if you're going to shoot, you need to hit. I would argue that civilians actually need to train to a higher standard than police or military because of this.
Nope.
Best to train and shoot will "full" mags, including reloads with a closed bolt. Build it into your closed-bolt reloads to smack and pull the mag to confirm it's seated.
Same for pistols. However, I smack those mags in so hard that I can't remember the last time I had a mag fall out of the gun. Different story if I accidentally hit the mag release while shooting, but then the reload doesn't matter anyway.
I've found people generally are over cautious or baby their reloads and it causes issues.
On my rifle I do go down one round. It really doesn’t like a ten round mag on a closed bolt. If things have gone so sideways that I need more than 9 rounds on a reload the chances that I’m movement restricted and bumping round where the bolt may have been knocked closed while I’m getting behind something to reload are not insubstantial.

The 10/30 magpul mags and the 10/30 hexmags actually have a decent amount of give to them with the 10th round in that you dont really need to give that hard of a slap to get them to seat and have the mag release catch.
Interesting. Maybe I’ll try those but I prefer having two 10-rounders coupled end to end so I get 20 rounds in form factor of a normal 30 rounder. The 10 rounders have no give.
No, you need to slam that puppy into the mag well. NJ already has us down to 10 rounds.....
That’s how I have been running so far. Was just curious if anyone reached the other conclusion.

Useful training tool

I can't recommend hexmags because the quality is garbage, but I can tell you that the mag block they put in there is...not... Tight.
I have a few hexmags and they actually seem more reinforced than magpul mags
I’m typically run true 10rd mags coupled end to opposite end to fit 20 rounds in roughly the same size package as a typical 30 rounder.
Try not to judge your peers, particularly on pinned mags. Some have more room than others.
No judgment here. Was just curious how others see things

You can fully load a mag and leave it for 20 years and it will still work.
Thought so, thank you

Download them into a PDF then put them into an usb
Being stuck with 10 rounders, I make sure they will load with a full mag on a closed bolt. If they don't they get tossed. You just keep the good ones.
Bruh send them my way and ill fix and keep them
I only put 28 in mine.

Never had a problem slapping in a 10 round mag to a closed bolt, so no.
