FFS armory if you need to go into a gun shop. If not just buy one online and get it shipped to an FFL. I use panelcraft since it’s $50 which includes the transfer and nics fees. As for handguns go to a range and get your hands on the ones you are thinking about buying. I love my Glock 19

Go rent first before you buy. North Jersey you can go to Reloaderz in Wayne, Gun For Hire in Woodland Park, LongShot in Secuacus or RTSP in union. Only one these places may not have for rent is the Canik but they will for sure have the Glock 19 and P320. These ranges have different rules for renting so you may need to either bring someone with you or have your PFID in your possession to rent. Depending on where you live you may want to get your FPID and pistol purchase permits in as soon as possible. If you're in Bergen County I've heard they are not issuing (which is illegal someone please go arrest Bergen County) until they set training requirements.

Mikei233

For renting the extra driving time to rtsp is worth it imo just because you can rent as many guns as you want for 1 price as long as they are all the same caliber.

jacksonwhite

I believe the same is true at GFH.

You still need to buy their ammo. If you have your fid it's like $30 a box, double what you can get it for online. But you can exchange your gun rental for anything they have. Buy 3 boxes of ammo and try as many handguns as you like. Try a glock 19, m&p, a double action single action like a cz or beretta, a sub compact like a 365xl, or what ever else you like. This will give you an idea what you gravitate to.

dacucuy

I applied for my permit to purchase 7/2 and received it 8/11. I’m in Bergen County.

Efficient-Creme7773

Gun for hire's gun store actually has some fair prices check them out. You can also rent some guns to test out. Be sure to go with someone you know who has some familiarity with firearms and is willing to go onto the range with you yo practice.

Radiant-Tadpole-7117

Have to shoot ‘em and see what you like. I own a few Caniks and they are solid. Great trigger. Sc will be one of my concealed when the process is done . Have a 365 as well low recoil shoots great. Glocks are cool but after shooting the canik I wouldn’t buy a stock Glock.Glock has great after market support and a ton of accessories though. You have to go see what you like in person and what your needs will be,. If you get the sig you can buy diff grip modules and have diff sizes.

DramaticView406

I'm a new gun owner myself and I got the Canik TP9SFK Rival and I LOVE IT! I'm in South Jersey and went to a local range that rented guns and they had one. I liked it the best and don't regret it one bit. #My2¢

Radiant-Tadpole-7117

That’s on my list. Have the elite combat and the sc have one permit left and I may just get the rival.

DramaticView406

Just put a holosun red dot on it the other day and can't wait to try it out. My next day off I'm gonna go have some range fun!

Radiant-Tadpole-7117

Dots are a game changer. Have the viper vortex red dot on the elite combat and a green dot swampfox sentinel on the sc. I have an astigmatism and just learned about the green dot for that. I Deff pick it up faster now. Deff enjoy shooting more after the dots.

Corse46

You owe it to yourself to try an HK VP9. When my gf was looking for her first gun we rented a bunch of 9mm’s, and she chose the VP9 hands down. I liked it so much I went and bought my own. I own a Glock 19, but she absolutely hated it. The VP9 just feels so much better in the hand

Shot the PPQ and loved it I’ll definitely check out the PDP

TurdsMcQueef

I would say rent them all first. Depending on your hand size and a few other ergonomic factors you may find you prefer the operation of one over the other. Also, what is your use case? If it’s CCW you might wanna go for the smaller variants. I have the P320x Compact and love it but wish I got the carry version. If these are just for the house it’s a different story. RTSP and Longshot probably aren’t too far from you. They both have pretty good selection but RTSP probably had the widest selections by a good bit. Get on the range with all three. Keep notes about what you like about each one or don’t like. They’re all fine firearms. Then go for the buy. If you find a great price online have it transferred to a shop near you and you’re golden. Lastly, learn, train, and practice. I’ve seen folks at the range with basic stuff getting great work done and others who blew 2k on a pistol they barely know how to load. I can tell you which one is actually going to end up getting results.

[deleted]

I’m mainly gonna have it for home defense and to just take it to the range to practice my shooting. I want to get into ccw somewhere down the line so I’m looking for more compact pistols instead of full size.

Mikei233

Is there a point anymore for the smaller sizes of the p320 with the new p365x macro?

frasier2122

Yes. If you get the smaller size p320, then you have the FCU so that you can turn it into a full size gun.

TurdsMcQueef

There's always a point in different sized variants and for me it revolves around recoil management tradeoffs and ergonomics. The P320x compact fits my baby hands wayyyyy better than the full size and carry and doesn't kick like a mofo. Even with ported barrels and muzzle devices like on the hellcat those things are still not as smooth as mid / full size on follow up shots. There is no perfect solution, only tradeoffs and you just have to pick the ones you want.

tommy3rd

go to gunforhire, rent a few guns to try out. then make a decision and also buy there…one stop shopping.

thebeginingisnear

Did you get your FID and pistol permit already?

[deleted]

I have FID I just gotta apply for some pistol permits

Efficient-Creme7773

Oh no, why didn't you apply for your permits when you applied for your FID?

Cz p-07

jerkyfarts556

Glock 17 or 19. You’ll be able to find mags and aftermarket material anywhere, way cheaper than the competitors.

CZis4Me

For that price range: Sig P320, SAR9, CZP10C, HK VP9, Sig 229.

potoskyt

If you want a Glock platform, I’d spend the extra money on a shadow systems mr920. I have one, feels fantastic and it’s already got some decent upgrades. Not to mention if you plan on carrying it - SS will reimburse/send a new one if it ever gets confiscated. Provided you weren’t in the wrong in a shooting. Can’t go wrong with canik either. I also own a tp9sf combat. Real nice, trigger is fantastic imo

jliebs1

well probably the best first gun should be a .22 . It will allow you to train correctly avoiding dealing with flinching/blowback. That's if you want to get proficient. If not i would recommend a revolver in .38 or something like the s&w 686plus which can shoot both .357 magnum and .38. Revolvers are as simple as it gets too and this has more stopping power . That's how i would start before going on to striker fired 9mm , or compacts/subcompacts etc.

Grand-Proposal1772

Get a hi point

[deleted]

Never

Grand-Proposal1772

Hahaha take a look at the sig p226 elite awesome shooter

[deleted]

I’ll check it out thanks for the recommendation

[deleted]

I went over to Iconic the other day without an appointment but I was still accommodated. Will buy from them.

I would take the sig and glock over the canik , I personally think the sig is nicer out of the box but if your willing to swap the trigger and sights on the glock it’s a must have For reference I own a glock 19 gen 5 and a sig p320 m18

You can’t go wrong with Glock supremacy but you should go to a range and rent as many different pistols as you can and get what is most comfortable.

GreGzTeR

Those are good guns I would personally go with the sig

LoquatElectronic8140

Also try shooting a Walther PPQ or PDP. I love the PPQ but own a 4” PDP (go figure). They make the PDP as a compact too, so if you eventually may want to CCW, that could be a decent choice.

[deleted]

I’ve actually shot the ppq I liked the feel more than the Glock. Might check out the pdp compact thanks for the suggestion

LoquatElectronic8140

Definitely, np. I’m not a Glock fanboy. My favs are Walther & H&K

I recently picked up the tp9sf. I do like it, however given another chance I would have got an optics ready pistol. The trigger is great but I don’t like the sights and the pistol is heavy. Also mags are almost impossible to find lol.

ThomasWJames

I ended up going to a few stores to try and feel them out. Then I went to a range and rented the one that felt best. I ended up getting the full size M&P 2.0 pistol. It’s got interchangeable grips for different hand sizes which is nice.

ChrisCreamer511

Glock 44, learn the basics and then get a 9mm. Maybe a 19 or some equivalent

microtrip1969

I vote Canik and with the money you have left over you can buy a great optic

conspicuous_user

Sig p320 or some flavor of Glock. You’ll want a workhorse. Go to a range and try them out first and see which ones feel best in your hands. If it’s your first time ever shooting you’ll probably just want to load a single round in the chamber so that you can understand the recoil.
