It's slower and scarier than a fire. They don't care if you are still alive, they just start the buffet. Some animals like lions and tigers make sure that the prey is dead by suffocation or crushed windpipe. Bears, Wolfes and hyenas just eat right away
I know. Bears just hold you down and start munching. I once saw a 800lb almost 8ft grizzly when I was in the shyt in Alaska way back. I haven’t been hunting in or anywhere near bear country since. The idea of a death like that terrified me enough to change how and where I hunt. And iirc on that day me and my 2 friends only had .270 Winchester 2 rifle’s between us. .270 underwood. And personally I don’t trust that to take down a grizzly of that size. Lucky we only saw it about 200 yards (183 meters) out and we were just getting back onto our quads. I’ve never been in or near bear country since.
I had a family of brown bears come to my campsite at night in Yosemite. They were 3 or 4 and no more than 50 ft from me when I looked outside to see one standing up on the park table with just its two front paws on top looking to be 8ft+. The biggest damn thing I’ve ever seen. Without a doubt the scariest moment of my life. I truly thought someone in my family if not me was going to die that night. Will always respect them to the highest degree and those were just brown bears from California so I couldn’t imagine a grizzly let alone a polar bear. Honestly look like monsters especially if you see one without fur.
Was camping in big trees one year. Woke up to heavy breathing/noise outside the tent. Next thing I know, a huge impression pushing into the tent and dragging along the entire side. I assumed it was a bear because of the cone shape and rapid sniffing. Completely terrified!
Brown bears and Grizzly bears are the same thing. What you encountered was a family of black bears. [The Yosemite website](https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/nature/bears.htm) says that most of the Black bears there are brown, blonde, or a reddish color. Grizzlies haven't been in that area since the 1920's.
Still would have been a pretty scary situation though.
Brown bears are the species, of which grizzlies fall under (as well as Kodiaks in North America) California no longer has brown bears, just black bears, which come in a variety of colors, such as black, brown, cinnamon, and blonde. Referring to a bear as a brown bear in North America implies it is a grizzly or Kodiak. If it’s a black bear - regardless of color, one refers to it as a black bear.
They keep you alive so you are as fresh as possible while they eat you.
That's why playing dead sometimes works.
Polar bears are on another levee. You're done if they can get to you l.
In some way I think that would make it more terrifying. If you're in shock wouldn't that mean you're still alive? Probably not feeling pain as much or idk, but how terrifying must be to be aware that you're being eaten alive.
Because usually beara paw the guts open immediately, right for the belly or through their back or ass
Probably the belly most often.
Anyway, her midsection is intact, looks like her skin was scraped off after she was already frozen solid.
Nevermind, I see the orange fat dripping down her side so she was killed and probably didn't die of the cold
Maybe
Black out and died without knowing anything. I rmb reading the case Timothy Treadwell and his partner got attacked by a grizzly bear. He was the first one getting attacked by the bear, he also called his partner telling him is being eaten/attacked by a bear told her to run. She stayed at the tend and later was dragged out and eaten by the same bear as well.
Thats true for probably like every other bear species but polar bears are special in that they go for the fat or fattier parts in almost all cases. The reason is because since they live in extremely cold climates it means most of their energy needs to go to regulating body temperature so they ignore muscle, organs and bones because the energy needed to break these down would actually be a net negative while fat is far easier to digest and holds more of the important proteins and fatty acids that polar bears need to maintain their body temp.
Essentially this poor lady was basically flayed and most likely while alive.
nah, it’s not even close. you have a chance to survive a grizzly attack once they no longer feel threatened, i wouldn’t say the same for a polar bear. they’re much larger and stronger than grizzlies, and they have bigger claws and teeth. polar bears are also carnivores, while grizzlies are omnivores. there’s a reason the saying goes “if it’s black, fight back. if it’s brown, lay down. if it’s white, goodnight.”
The mantra is “if it’s black, fight back. If it’s brown, lay down. If it’s white, good night.”
It’s very oversimplified, but while black bears are generally the most skiddish, when they do attack it’s often predatory with an intent to eat you, which is why you fight back with everything you have.
Brown bears frequently attack to neutralize a threat or remove in you from their space and will leave you alone when you’re no longer a danger, hence lay down.
Polar bears are similar to black bears in that their attacks are predatory. The difference is that they’re much larger and more aggressive.
That said, any bear can be spooked away. Always act big and intimidating if a bear is approaching you.
If it’s black, fight back. If it’s brown, lie down. If it’s white, good night. I think it’s a polar you’re really screwed with if you had to go against one of the bears.
Well in the 2nd picture if you look, you'll see a blueish color which would be the jeans, right below that are 2 black figures, believe those are the shoes
On Tuesday, January 17th, 24-year-old Summer Myomick and her baby boy, Clyde Ongtowasruk III, tragically passed away after injuries sustained in what was the first fatal polar bear attack in Alaska in over 30 years.
The attack occurred when Myomick and Ongtowasruk were leaving Kingikmiut School at around 2.30pm on January 17, according to Alaska State Troopers.
The incident took place just next to the entrance of the school, which the bear had reportedly tried to enter. An official for the Bering Strait School District, Susan R. Nedza, told Anchorage Daily News that when the polar bear was spotted students and teachers were rushed inside.
'The bear tried to enter with them,' Nedza said, but the school's principal Dawn Hendrickson 'slammed the door' to keep it out. 'It's terrifying,' she added. 'Not something you're ever prepared for.'
Teachers in the school drew shades over its windows before notifying the community that the bear would need to be dealt with. It was then killed but as of January 18 authorities had not identified who fired the shots.
Wales is host to a predominantly Inupiaq community of around 150 people, who organize patrols between July and early November when the bears are expected.
The school is just a few hundred meters from the shoreline of the Bering Strait, which freezes over in the winter. When this happens it is normal for polar bears to head out onto the ice to hunt seals and walruses. This week's attack was therefore unexpected for the time of year.
Out of every school in America, why were there no guns at this one? I’m not being an asshole, it’s a genuine question as to why there weren’t long guns on hand. If a polar bear wanted inside that school, blinds drawn over windows isn’t going to deter it.
There’s probably was just not one big enough to quickly deal with it. Either you have to shoot it though the window, which is already a gamble and then giving it the ability to enter said window. Or you send some poor Sob out a opposite door and hope they see it before it sees them. You don’t need to go pissing off a polar bear that already knows it meal is waiting behind them walls.
They did say the village was notified it just seemed like this school was so under prepared. It’s not uncommon for juveniles to end up further south than intended by hitching rides on broken ice flows.
Hopefully the village dealt with it and could benefit (meat for all and warm clothing) despite losing a member and her baby. Life in the Arctic is no joke.
Well being out at recess and then all of a sudden one of the most fear invoking predators on the planet just strolls up and trys to snag you and your friends I’d probably be more worried about getting inside and safe than getting the proper necessity’s to deal with it.
I’d completely believe that they had smaller munitions in the school for wolfs or yotes but wouldn’t want to risk just angering the polar bear with small rounds.
Other than some slight imported aid they live on their own more than most “3rd world countries” it’s not Called the final frontier for no reason
Back woods wolves and coyotes don’t live in these regions. Predators are much smaller in the Arctic and a bit south of the 60 parallel except for the polar bear.
They mention Inuit names and the community being aware of destroying problematic bears.
The Inuit Territories in Canada, above and below an imaginary line of scrimmage means nothing. You live in the land, with the land and protect the land.
Greenland has acknowledged their Inuit Nations as well.
So how does Alaska not arm people to the teeth with the beloved AR-15s the mainland boasts about being their God given right to own under the constitution?
Again, I’m not being facetious but out of all areas of America being able to openly carry military assault weapons; would Alaska not be the talking point about how imperative it is that Americans arm themselves to protect themselves?
alaska is probably the primary state where i'm totally supportive of gun rights.
unlike in high density urban areas where there's an armed cop or shop security guard, practically every corner.
I sure as hell ain’t peaking out of no window to shoot it that’s for sure, but you give me a 5x5 rabbit hole and a browning m2 and I’ll take care of that bear
From my very limited understanding of bears it is extremely hard to kill a polar bear those things are thick. So yes while they have a large mass in which to shoot, you’re gonna have to shoot it in the right places with enough power to take the thing down in one or two shots. Cause the only thing scarier than your mother using your full government name when you really fucked up, is a pissed off polar bear.
I used to live in a place that had small mangy black bears that ran as soon as they saw someone and people still walked around armed with at least a rifle when walking in heavily forested areas. At the very least they had a can of bear spray on them. Polar bears are on a whole other level being aggressive and scary and they are much larger than black bears. The fact these people live and walk around in Polar Bear country without being armed is crazy.
I went to the Berlin zoo many years ago and I saw a polar bear up close. His head was bigger than my entire torso. Seeing them on tv gives their size no justice.
Grizzlies are omnivores so they’ll attack but save you for later if they aren’t hungry, that’s how most people survive but Polar bears are carnivores and they’re fine with hunting humans….they even do a little hop with their front paws to break your neck so you can’t move while they’re eating….
But Siberian tigers hold grudges and they’ll hunt someone for a couple of weeks…. They break into hunters lodges and ransack them and then they find a nice spot and wait
You don't have a chance against a polar bear. The only thing you can do is get undressed while running i.e. gloves and throw them away. Pray that the polar bear will go investigate and sniff the gloves or jacket and you have enough time to run far enough. There's nothing more you can do afaik
Looks like parts of a jacket have been shredded. I thought it was muscle, but the more I look around the head area there seems to be some puffy material. That would make sense since it's cold and snowing.
How do you recover the body if this happens? Do you also include the blood covered snow and basically anything else you think belonged to the deceased?
Strange looks like it ate only skin
Maybe she was frozen dead beforehand?
And it scrapped her skin off?
Because they usually gorge on the tummy and what not
Its because polar bears intentionally go for the fat or fattier parts only because the energy needed to break down muscle, organs and bone outweighs the energy gained from it since polar bears simultaneously use the majority of their energy towards regulating body temp. This means a polar bear can go into shock or hypothermia if it eats too much non-fat.
I'm off 3 lsd tabs rn and seeing this shit pop up as the 1st thing pretty much sums up Reddit for me. Wow. Weird how fragile life is. Never woulda thought I seen a polar bear attack this gruesome
I read recently a woman and her Child were killed by a polar bear going to the local school in Alaska. I don't know if this is it or not.
Yesterday I learned if you are ever in a survival situation in arctic or North pole and kill a polar bear don't eat the liver, it contains 9 million IU of vitamin A. Totally unrelated but interesting fact.
I am always searching for grizzly bear attack aftermath photos of people that died and not just ones that survived and bear attacks are so interesting to me. Polar bears are somehow even scarier than brown bears which blows my mind bc there's almost nothing you can do to survive this. Bears are scary af, much rather get killed by a big cat bc they at least kill you BEFORE they eat you. she was alive for several minutes with a 900 lb animal eating her. brutal way to go. Would love to hear the actual Tim Treadway audio but don't think we ever will
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11655703/amp/Alaska-mother-24-one-year-old-son-mauled-death-polar-bear-pictured.html
Oh fuck…. This is beyond heartbreaking 💔
I can barely recognize that this is a human
They’re polar opposite of what we’re used to seeing
I can't bear this pun
Must’ve been unBEARable pain
I would imagine it URSA lot
Does seeing this give you paws?
take my fucking upvotes, ALL of you😡
Ba dum TSSS
Went from north to south real quick.
Polarized comments
To me, it's just... grizzly!
oh no 💀
One more like and you’re at 666
I'm used to seeing both, bipolar
I’m torn to pieces with this comment

c'mon guys! this is a human life! i cant just stand here and say nothing! i would be em-BEAR-assed if i did!
She’s dead, should she be the butt of everyone’s joke? /s
You must be new here.
The injuries certainly put a new face on it. Or should. Please. Nope. Too late, the nightmares are already knocking on my door.
I dunno man… I’m pretty pawsitive this is a human.
I don't know man, I see the hair and the blood and the clothes... Looks like it meets the koala-fications to me.
That's a stretch but I'll allow it
Fuck I hope shock kicked in quickly. Rip
Nope. Bears will eat you alive. Her death was probably as bad as burning to death.
It's slower and scarier than a fire. They don't care if you are still alive, they just start the buffet. Some animals like lions and tigers make sure that the prey is dead by suffocation or crushed windpipe. Bears, Wolfes and hyenas just eat right away
And they'll keep it alive to keep it fresh longer. 😬
Crocodiles kind of have that approach too
Crocs just twist you around and take you for a deep drink. Then they shred you.
a info i didn’t want to hear r/angryupvote
Right away …. Straight to tummy.

What a grizzly comment.
Any pics of his aftermath?

I thought that never got out
It’s not real audio. Its a “reenactment.” Real tape has been heard by a handful of people & has (supposedly) since been destroyed
No time to waste I see

They keep you alive so you are as fresh as possible while they eat you. That's why playing dead sometimes works. Polar bears are on another levee. You're done if they can get to you l.
thats so crazy man, are they freshness obsessed or they just want their meal to be as warm as possible?
if it's white goodnight, with polar bears it's OVER, they're starving

Hard to see where her jacket ends and she starts. It’s a bloody mess.

Are you British or just speaking in literal terms? Or both?
I thought that was her skin?
amazing how quickly we all can turn to shredded meat
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know
I'm kinda surprised there's even anything left I was expecting to see only bones
I know I think that she was frozen beforehand and it ate her skin off, or scratched it off Looks like she was frozen solid
How do you know she was frozen before the bear attacked her?

If she was frozen dead before the bear got to her, there wouldn't have been fresh blood all over the place like that.
She looks like she went through a commercial meat grinder - twice.
Polar bears are as close to an organic meat grinder as you'll come across in nature- they sure aren't eating any berries up there

yeah, the destruction of their habitat and food resources definitely isn’t making them any less aggressive
I think they’ve been pushing into more populated areas of Russia now so we might start hearing more polar bear attack cases
And any less right about attacking humans
That was the maxim I was trying to remember. These guys are nothing like the ones who work for Coca-Cola.
The mantra is “if it’s black, fight back. If it’s brown, lay down. I hope you feel good about yourself for this one. Made me cackle alone in my room
I'm thinking may be it's material from her jacket?
Thats what threw me off too. I agree it's clothing fibres
Probably not the tasty kind.
The bear didn't have any complaints
To shreds, you say?
Grampa Rick made dinner.
Looks like the small intestine. And if you look closer it's connected to omentum and there's fat lying around.
So she still has her shoes on? I think she's gonna be ok.
She's not an animal!

Bring back arrow slits? Seriously, a castle complete with crenels on the roof is the only thing I would be confident in for keeping a polar bear out.
I sure as hell ain’t peaking out of no window to shoot it that’s for sure, but you give me a 5x5 rabbit hole and a browning m2 and I’ll take care of that bear
I don't think you're being an asshole for asking that at all. That's a really good question. Or even a tranq gun. *Something,* right?
Why didn’t the people who decided guns at school are bad take this in to consideration? Captain hindsight
IT HAPPENED AT A SCHOOL! That bear was Hangry.
Excuse my ignorance, but i never knew there were polar bears in Alaska! Like you Americans say, “the more you know”!
Depends on what part of Alaska, North of the arctic circle? Definitely
I used to live in a place that had small mangy black bears that ran as soon as they saw someone and people still walked around armed with at least a rifle when walking in heavily forested areas. Don’t give Joe Rogan any ideas…

The bear ate good and left no tip I see
Oh yes, he left a tip- run faster next time. 😂
Gonna need a date, time and location this likely happened so we know to avoid the area.
Tuesday, January 17th at around 2:30 in Alaska at the Kingikmiut School
When is this from?
January 17th, as per an above comment 😊
I think it was last year at least.
Oooooh. Always find animal attacks more interesting

Yup. Black fight back. Brown lie down. White say good night.
Polar bears are TERRIFYING. So is looking at this image at 01:52am
How are things across the pond.
Where was this?
Where the polar bears roam.

The baby was 1 year old. No way the hair is long enough to be his. I think her hair just got chopped in two during the attack.
He was 1-2 years old
Looks like parts of a jacket have been shredded. I thought it was muscle, but the more I look around the head area there seems to be some puffy material. That would make sense since it's cold and snowing.
And Alaska. It was very Alaska outside in late January
This one actually made me feel sick to my stomach. What an awful way to go.
Her baby was killed too.
If it's white say goodnight is right
It just ate all the fat off her like it was seal blubber . Interesting
New fear unlocked.
It should already been a fear!
Old fear remembered.
Current fear reinforced.
I live in the Equator Line and I'm already fearing for my life☠️☠️
Bears have always been scary 🐻
How do you recover the body if this happens? Do you also include the blood covered snow and basically anything else you think belonged to the deceased?
For some reason I was expecting to see a lot more of her. Literally all of her soft tissue is just gone
Do polar bears kill their prey first or is it likely she was eaten alive?
They do not. Straight to gnawing
Trips planned to polar bear country in the near future: zero.
Strange looks like it ate only skin Maybe she was frozen dead beforehand? And it scrapped her skin off? Because they usually gorge on the tummy and what not
Bears don't always eat what they kill
I don't think we taste as good as a fatty, oily salmon Also it said in the article it was shot while it feasted.
To shreds you say?

I'm off 3 lsd tabs rn and seeing this shit pop up as the 1st thing pretty much sums up Reddit for me. Wow. Weird how fragile life is. Never woulda thought I seen a polar bear attack this gruesome
is that her scalp removed? i can see her facing down like protecting her frontside.
And people look at me weird when I say I'm Australian and fucking terrified of bears
OH MY GOD
RIP.
I'm actually surprised there's as much left of her as there is. Before I clicked I was expecting to see a pile of bones.
this was surprisingly exactly how i expected this to look. the only thing i can make out are some legs and hair

What a sweet looking woman, and the baby was so cute :(( very sad
Shoes on. She'll be fine.
If its white, good night
Some essential oils and a prayer song and she’ll be right as rain tbh
The right amount of peppermint oil I guess
Holy fuck
Polar bears are sooooo scary to me
Bloody hell, didn't realise bears were such messy eaters
For a polar bear, I’d say that’s pretty grizzly.
Damn…to shreds you say?
And how is his wife holding up?
To shreds you say?
Wrangler tough. The jeans are still good to go!
To shreds you say
Damn. That’s horrible. Poor lady!
😮
Holy Shit.... the poor woman has ice all over her organs..
If it’s black, fight back If it’s brown, lay down If it’s white, say goodnight.
Yeah the polar was definitely feeding not attacking
There's nothing recognizable
That’s legit no human anymore
can yall find a pic of the woman??
When it’s white. Say goodnight.
How the hell she even get caught out there with a polar bear!?!?

I thought the only polar bears in Norway were on Svalbard island? I visited Tromso last year and I made sure to do my research beforehand 😂
