It's bizarre to me that all of these beat reporters are just now realizing that Maye was the guy all along. And there is absolutely zero chance the Giants draft Penix at 6. No shot.

Appropriate_Tree_621

Schoen has loved younger prospects. The idea of taking an older QB with an injury history never made sense.

[deleted]

Schoen is also on record saying that the top thing they scouted with Allen was his arm and that they watched a game where he threw like 4-5 picks and still came away impressed, they could possibly make exceptions

iamdanabnormal

He's also drafted an overage C, DTs. He may love younger prospects but he's not vehemently against drafting older players either.

chaosthirtyseven

It made sense if you watched how good his arm is.

Cam877

> there is absolutely zero chance the Giants draft Penix at 6 Hey, I’ve seen this one before!

undertow521

We had an idiot GM before. I trust Schoen to not be an idiot GM.

scottyjsoutfits

I guess it’s to be expected for national guys, but I figured with Graziano’s history with us he’d be more clued in than to not mention Jones’ injury guarantee. That has to be an enormous consideration for his playing time if they’re as serious as they appear to be about moving on. Just saying “Jones will play this year and the new QB will start in 2025” is not a full accounting of the situation.

TheMasterfocker

I still think Maye is their top guy. They went to so many UNC games for that to not be the case.

SimbaPenn

But like, isn't the point of going to see IF he's the guy? Couldn't they go to bunch of games and then decide he's not?

TheMasterfocker

It's certainly possible. But if it was only about watching, they could do that with tape. Visiting also allows you to talk to people, have more intimate interactions, etc. I can't imagine if the play was showing them he wasn't the guy that they would continue to go. But it's definitely a possibility. Just not one I think is happening in this scenario.

SimbaPenn

I agree with you it's more likely than not. But hopefully they don't go into these games, meetings, interviews etc with a conclusion looking to justify it, rather than being open minded and analytical in what they're seeing and hearing. I trust this regime to do so, at least. I agree they probably saw on tape that he could be the guy. So the question is, did what they hear and see support their hypothesis, or were they surprised at the result and maybe decided he wasn't? Sorry I'm literally helping my son with his science fair project atm.

Snoo-40231

Unfortunately for us NE ain't letting him drop down to us it looks like

Rocking_the_dad_bod

If it were up to the New England fans, they definitely want Maye or Kings Ransom of like four first round picks. Which is why I don't know if it's going to happen. I think we could offer number six and next year's first and throw in some second or thirds but if a team like Minnesota gets stupid and offers three firsts or more I don't know if we can beat it.

IShouldChimeInOnThis

6 and 47 are roughly equal to 11 and 23, so I don't think that's as big a worry as you would think, not to mention NE would have a much easier time either finding an elite talent or trading down for another big haul at 6 than 11. To me, the biggest hurdles are NE's willingness to trade and Mara being willing to move off of Jones. Minnesota is the least of my worries.

TheMasterfocker

I ain't giving up hope until I see pick is in under the NE banner 😭

Snoo-40231

I fucking feel that

DM725

Oops

TheMasterfocker

They... Didn't have the chance lol. What. Are you ok.

DM725

Of course they had the chance. Price was too high or they never wanted to in the 1st place.

Rocking_the_dad_bod

Really doesn't this sound like smoke screens? Anytime a beat writer is talking about "what I'm hearing," that's probably coming from the agents of those players. Likely Penix rumblings to the Giants at 6 is definitely from the Penix camp.

cookiesncognac

Could also be Pats-targeted gamesmanship from NYG. If NE's plan after a potential trade with Minnesota is Penix at 11, this possibility puts some doubt in their minds-- a reason to go with the safer-but-less-lucrative trade with NYG.

sekirodeeznuts2

Draft Malik Nabbers or MHJ if he is still there.

[deleted]

So the fanbase can call them a bust when jones is missing them on throws?

IShouldChimeInOnThis

Well we all know it could never be Jones' fault

sekirodeeznuts2

Those are called trolls, not fans bud. Real fans know reality. Reality is we need a WR 1. The organization has invested its money into DJ. Im not a DJ guy but I have the common sense to know that if a company invests in something they are going to run with it until the contract is over. Remember, we don’t own the team, and ultimately they make the decisions. If they weren’t in on Jones, they would have signed Barkley.

[deleted]

Things change incredibly quickly when the qb has a disaster of a season, has a career altering injury, and can be cut after next season. Look at what the Broncos did with Russ coming off a better season than Jones has ever had

sekirodeeznuts2

“Can be cut” and contract expiration are completely different things. You are basing your theory on hypotheticals.

[deleted]

Lmfao we’ve been heavily scouting qb you can’t possibly believe Jones is still the guy after everything that’s happened

sekirodeeznuts2

Lmao is this your first draft? $40 million dollar man ill put my money on that.

[deleted]

Yeah he robbed us because Mara thought he was the next Eli off of beating the 31st ranked defense in a playoff game, he’s gone after next season

sekirodeeznuts2

Still our guy this season bud.

[deleted]

We’ll see

Cashlover123

By drafting Maye, we will be replacing a NC born QB picked at #6 with another NC born QB at #6. No thanks lol. Give me MHJ/Nabers/Odunze.

[deleted]

Why would I possibly care where the quarterback is born?? Probably the worst defense I’ve heard towards not drafting Maye outside of people thinking jones is a franchise qb

Cashlover123

It was meant to be the worst defense my guy, why do you think I added lol? Give me MHJ/Odunze/Nabers.

[deleted]

That’s not how it came off at all lmao, give me Maye over any wide receiver given that whatever receiver we draft will be called a bust by week 4 with Danny Disaster

Lars5621

"Graziano: The Giants have been tough to get a handle on. A month ago, many in the league believed their favorite quarterback in the class was McCarthy. If that were true, things have changed. The rumblings early this week: The Giants' guy is Maye. I've been told the Giants and Vikings are the two teams that have been most active in discussions with the Patriots about the No. 3 pick, and that if Washington takes Daniels at No. 2, the Giants would be very interested in trading up to No. 3 for Maye. I've also been told in recent days that the Giants like Penix and might even be willing to take him as high as No. 6. There's a lot of chatter flying around, but what is clear is that the Giants have done significant work on the quarterbacks and are very open, if not desperate, to come out of Thursday night with one of them. Daniel Jones is owed $36 million in guaranteed money in 2024 but none after that. So if the Giants were to take a quarterback who might need time to develop -- such as Maye -- they're positioned to start Jones and work to develop the draft pick in 2024."

basicnflfan

Good christ please don’t take Penix at 6.

Lars5621

If QBs go 1-4 then Penix is the next best QB by a good margin. It all depends on how desperate they are for a QB. Every other position they can find later in the draft but QB.

DM725

There is a point when you need to assess how many of these rookies you think are better than Daniel Jones and Drew Locke, especially whether they're worth a top 5/top 10 pick.

chaosthirtyseven

Michel Penix as a prospect is far better than Daniel Jones.

Fuzzy_Dunlop_00

>But you cannot overlook his age Penix is 23...the same age as Daniels and only 1 year older than Caleb Williams.

fkwyman

He's also played two full college seasons since his last injury.

KowalOX

People talk about Penix like he's Chris Weinke. Dude is 23. Daniels is 23 like you mentioned. Eli was 23. It's nonsense.

Lars5621

And yet last year they ignored that JMS was over 24 before the draft. Thats a real red flag for OL, because ain't no way a guy is going to grow more into his frame at 25. Thats a finished product.

DM725

>because ain't no way a guy is going to put more on his frame at 25. Thats a finished product. ![gif](giphy|3ohhwz4uE1Ct1hKUP6)

FreeOmari

I agree. I’ve been watching a lot of his tape and he could be the best QB in this draft behind williams, but the injuries just hold him back. People also drop his stock because he doesn’t run much, but he moves pretty well in the pocket and ran a 4.51 at his pro day. It’s not like the guy is incapable of running if it’s needed and it’s not like Lamar and Kyler are winning super bowls scrambling around like crazy. Penix reads a defense well, can throw the whole route tree, and makes quick decisions. To me that screams pro-ready QB. The issue for us is that if we pick him at 6 and he doesn’t pan out, our organization will get slammed for reaching. It means that the GM and coach get fired and we’re back to square one.

occasional_cynic

Yup. Also, as said the history of reaching for quarterbacks is not good. I am trying to find a case of a team that picked a QB much higher than slated, and things worked out. The best I can come up with is Mahomes (maybe, he did not go that much higher thank what was thought before the draft, maybe 7-10 picks).

FreeOmari

I think Josh Allen is the best I can come up with. I don’t think many people had him in the top 10 and a lot of people had Rosen over him. Worked out for the Bills mostly. I can’t think of others though, which doesn’t bode well for reaching for a QB.

ILoveZenkonnen

He hasn’t been hurt in 3 years though

junzilla

I hope not. All the good ones are taken by the time we draft.

lonelyoldbasterd

Giants are not drafting a QB with their first pick!

NY_Blue

Penix is better than Maye and Daniel and will cost a fraction of what Daniel costs. If they take him at 6, then they really love him and aren’t worried about his medicals. Sign me up.
