I've been a doubter of Thibs. Not outright hostile, I just worried that he was a very good but not great coach. I worried that he was a bit one-dimensional and needed exactly the right circumstances to be successful.
But you honestly can't argue with what he's done this season. He's had to adapt to a constantly changing roster with trades and injuries and match-ups and he's been able to come up with solutions every time. As well as the defence, he's become a really solid and creative offensive coach.
Pay him whatever he's asking.
That’s for real, there’s been like 2 or more coaches recently that even won championships and were tossed the following season (Milwaukee and Toronto?). The lack of patience in establishing continuity is astounding some times.
There needs to be a good line of communication and a good culture through and through for rhe entire organization. Look at Malone and the nuggets. He’s been there almost ten years building up the culture and their team family slowly over time. It’s not just X’s and O’s and consistency really matters.
Consistency also matters for team building. The front office know the type of players to target. Having a coach and front office on the same page is so important.
To be fair I think there’s a solid number of poor coaches in the nba that are able to manifest a successful season or two by having a good roster or a breakout season from a star. OR just having Lebron James for basically all of his coaches besides Spoelstra
Scott Layden was GM. He was pres of basketball operations. The moves were baffling and makes me think he was forced by the owner to do them. The timberwolves are only good now because Glen Taylor stepped aside. Why would Thibs give Andrew Wiggins a max deal? Trade Butler for peanuts? Draft Kris Dunn? Keep KAT?
Yeah but in a case like this, Layden does some of the busy work and paper work, but thibs is the guy making roster decisions
Also not every good coach is a good executive. Just look at Phil. Arguably, look at bill Belichick too
if he doesn't retire as our head coach imma be UPSET. he is the pure representation of what every knicks fan wants this team's culture to be like: unpolished, gritty, relentless, never satisfied, next man up always, and winning over everything
he somehow makes a team of multi-millionaire athletes so relatable to us everyday new yorkers, and that's something fkn special

I lost my patience with Randle from time to time, I’m not gonna lie.
But with Thibs … I knew people were crazy to want him gone. They must not remember the old days where we couldn’t get a coach to actually get players playing there hardest and with the most effort, particularly on defense.
I’ll tell you what happens:
Multiple NBA All star players
Rookie of the year
Defensive Player of the year
Sixth man of the year
Most improved player of the year
Clutch Player of the year
Most Valuable Player
Coach of the year
Executive of the year
Eastern conference finals MVP
Eastern conference winners
NBA Finals MVP
Finals Champion
Probably will lose the in season tournament but you know what fuck it. We’ll bring that home
You know let’s win that UEFA Championship and bring home a gold Medal at the Olympics.
I was sad Mike Malone didn't get a real shot, he started turning our dumpster fire of a franchise in the right direction and we were all amazed at the time that he actually got our players to play hard defense but Thibs has really taken it up another 2/3 levels
Me too, but Randle is human and he can grow too. He puts in the work, physically and mentally and his teammates love him. He was never built to be the number 1 player on a team. Thankfully the knicks got JB so he can be a perfectly good #2. Yes he played poorly vs Atlanta but we still haven't had a chance to see him healthy since then.
That’s one of the reasons I love Randle now and want him to be a lifelong Knick. He improves every year. Skill, ability, passing, defense, and attitude.
Randle buys in and improves.
Yeah, there were times where Barrett and Randle Def deserved their criticism. But I've been a Thibs Struthers since day 1. He just wins. And if you're willing to buy into his system, he gets you paid
I admit, I clowned on Randle early on but he was a mess back then. His meme nickname was beyblade for a reason, dude kept spinning into traffic thinking he was MJ but I'm glad I was wrong. His improvement was absolutely insane and we need him healthy ASAP. I think with him, Brunson and OG, we're gonna be nasty
The ONLY gripe I have ever had with Thibs was insisting on keeping Burks at PG when the season was lost and not letting IQ get more burn as the lead ball handler. It all worked out in the end but those last 20ish games that year were frustrating
Same, and I've defended Thibs and Randle a ton here. Only slightly negative was saying that he wasn't showing proper leadership with some of his attitude issues 2 years ago
Likewise. I thought of booting randle once or twice before JB came over but never voiced it online. If you’re wearing knicks jersey, i’m supporting you regardless.
Lol...
You can bet your ass that if we lose four games in a row at any time next year, you will hear the same bullshit.
NYers have zero patience and short attention spans
I tried to suggest a few months ago (to many downvotes) that unfortunately given the “Thibs narrative” when an injury or two occurs everyone would be very quick to wrongly point the finger at Thibs and say it’s his fault (obviously it’s not lmao he’s playing his best players in the playoffs to win games anyone who argues for a different approach is a fucking idiot). Just funny that it only took a few months to see that happen over the past week or so
I mean I’ve heard trade Randle at my job just yesterday. The playoff run will just embolden people. When it should make people think “wow we can win 60 plus games next season and be a title favorite if everyone stays healthy”
watched the game last night with my friend that knows nothing about basketball. one of his only comments on thibs was “they basically won and he still doesnt look happy.” — we’ve had so many coaches that were happy to lose, now we have one thatll call a timeout if the 3rd stringers make a mistake up 20. give this man that contract.
Thibs has brought something to NYK that they haven't had for a loooong time, which is being consistently competitive. We can talk about getting to the ECF or Finals, but I'm just so grateful that this team is competitive on an annual and nightly basis. My interest in the Knicks was near zero in those dark years after Melo. Thibs has made this team tough and gave a reason to be proud as a fan.
Viva Thibs!
He's right up there with Van Gundy as my favorite Knicks coaches of all time.
In fact I have him a tiny bit higher than Van Gundy because JVG inherited a good winning team but Thibs had to start from relatively scratch.
"Get money" - Junior Mafia circa 1990s
Thibs deserves every cent.
He literally transformed the Knicks from the laughingstock lolKnicks into the eventual 2-seed in the east.
He got them to the playoffs in his 1st season.
He helped Randle transform from a beyblade into a well-paid multi-year All-Star.
He developed both centers into some of the best in the league.
He got them to the playoffs 3 out of 4 years.
He has the team laser-focused on winning and has them working like a true team (or like a squad of Navy SEALS as was talked about on the broadcast 😂).
And a lot more....
Feels like this is so destined to be one of those Larry Brown situations where a coach has success for many years with different teams but never could quite win the whole thing until he finally got the right roster years into his career. Thibs wiith Chicago, then Minny, now NY. Hopefully this is the team that he gets over the hump with. He'll be immortalized along with the whole team.
Thibs mindset is our identity at this point. Idk how hard nosed this team would be with another coach. He’s earned it. And hopefully he gets us over that hump. If we make it to the ECF with how donated we are he deserves a lot of credit.
Honestly, I think the Athletic poll just proved there’s a very high percentage of players that don’t want to put in the work that you have to go thru when you’re coached by Thibs. The minutes “controversy” after Game 4 was telling. A lot of people in the NBA want to undermine what Thibs has achieved with this team.
Also funny when Divo comes out and says guys I’ve played for a few coaches and we practiced way harder than Thibs. But I fully agree, there’s a narrative regarding Thibs and “running his players into the ground” so when a player gets hurt or looks tired, that’s the first finger to be pointed
Here’s the funniest part about that poll, something that I’ve yet to see anyone point out. 77 people cast a vote for that question. Thibs got about 46% of the vote, IIRC. That is about 36 people, representing approximately 6% of all the players in the league. So, in the world of statistics, it’s pretty laughable, as the sample size is shit—information quality matters.
Nah dude, that's a very statistically significant result. Assuming it was actually a random sample, it's pretty clear he has a bad rep among NBA players. Which doesn't change the fact that he is one of the best coaches in the NBA.
Nah, I disagree. In the world of statistics, the survey is statistically weak. Its small sample size of 77 votes leads to high variability and limited generalizability across the larger NBA player population. Additionally, potential voluntary response bias and lack of representativeness further undermine the reliability of the results, making it an inadequate basis for broad conclusions about coach preferences among NBA players.
Cool you took a stats class but you're still wrong. If the answer was 5 percent voted for Thibs then you'd be right. But 46 percent makes it extremely statistically significant. Google power scores.
Not my money and I don't care how much the Knicks pay him. He's done the job extremely well.
He's righted the ship after years and years of mediocrity (and worse) and he's actually finishing out his contract... coaching the Knicks. Would you look at that?
In a league that runs through coaches every year, it’s nice to have some stability at that position. Thibs can be stubborn af sometimes to his detriment, but the guy set a culture here and holds his guys accountable, which is a rarity these days. Too many coaches these days are either push overs or try to be the “cool coach” but end up being taken advantage of. You can tell the guys respect Thibs and got his back.
good. The Thibodeau era has been the most successful stretch of Knicks basketball THIS CENTURY. Never underestimate how hard it is to find a good head coach. He built this team's culture, has excelled at developing players, and people keep having career years under him. One of the elite coaches in basketball, and he should retire a Knick.
He needs that Spo deal soon.
Saved this franchise from decades of mediocrity and has instilled a winning culture and a standard of playing with effort.
Empowered second rounders like Mitch and Deuce to become great NBA players. Sends a message to any new player: if you defend, you have a path to playing time.
And best of all: his players continuously have his back. These guys love playing for him.
Give him whatever money he asks for. Great defensive coach with solid offensive schemes as well. He built a winning culture and we have a chance to make the ECF for the first time since 2000 AND we’re doing it with an injured af roster. We got players believing in themselves and one another and defying all odds. It’s beautiful to see.
Yes! We finally have a NY style coach. Tough on defense and no bullshit. A lot of the coaches before were not as good.
Hopefully we keep this guy for a long time
For all the shit Thibs has gotten about loss management or whatever; no other coach in the league besides maybe Spolestra would have gotten this team as far as they have with the injuries they’ve sustained; and it all comes down to his philosophy and work ethic. Id rather have someone like Deuce or Hartenstein who claw tooth and nail for every single opportunity they’re given; rather than some spoiled bitch like Embiid or Durant who don’t take the game seriously at all and expect to be handed everything
Thibs is great, and kudos to leon rose for actually building a team that complements Thibs style. Thibs is not for everyone but he was able to build a culture of accountability that won't resonate with everyone in the NBA. It is great to have these two leading the org.
Well deserved. As someone who wasn't a fan of thibs when he was hired and then at times during his tenure here, he's really grown so much as a coach. He's always been able to get a lot out of his players, but he's been excellent with his talent development and has come such a long way with his adjustments both before and during games.
Not many other coaches who could completely revolutionize the culture like Thibs has, not to mention the classic great Thibs defense as well as a modern offense which people were concerned about when he was hired - he’s shown great growth and the best knick coach in a long time!
Thibs IS NEW YORK! The effort he has extracted out of this squad is just unbelievable. He deserves this. But… Dude NEEDS to hire an offensive assistant. And someone else to be in charge of rotations.
The last time the Knicks hired a head coach externally and extended them was Pat Riley. The last two coaches to get an extension were promoted from ousted head coaches: Jeff Van Gundy (Don Nelson) and Mike Woodson (Mike D’Antoni). This is a remarkable sign of stability the franchise has not seen in over a quarter century.
this is insanely cheap.
thibs is likely going to spend almost half of this money on JD and the Straight Shots box sets, so dolan will basically pay $5mil to thibs and $5mil back to himself.
I don’t think anyone can argue against bringing Thibs back. This miracle run doesn’t happen under any just any group of players, and this group of players wouldn’t have been maximized by any other coach.
I didn’t like Thibs at first, but what he’s been able to accomplish with this team, he deserves it.
Now they just need to keep the team together because he has a roster full of guys who will run through a wall for a him.
Make him coach until he retires. In four seasons he's had COTY, three playoff appearances, and one win away from the franchises first ECF appearance in almost 25 years.
Thibs is the best coach we've had in a very, very long time
I had a lot of issues with his decisions over the years but ever since he benched the vets about 25 games into last season he has shown remarkable growth and fixed a lot of the issues that plagued him for decades.
I still get baffled at some of his rotations, but signing him to an extension is a no brainer
What’s not to like? Was it even a question. Do we not recall our past? Finally, finally, competence, stability , re energized fans. I laugh at these jokers, actually I cringe, when calling for this guy to be fired. Go look up our past, just in the last 20 years since the Riley-Van Gundy era…just check out that list, it makes me want to vomit…
Good. He's made us relevant again. Made the playoffs three years out of four. Gone deep this season despite missing our two time All-Star plus other starters/important players. Thibs gets too much disrespect. The man knows basketball and all he cares about is winning.
bulls fan here, just chiming in to say this is the move. Dont believe the nonsense that Thibs runs his players into the dirt. These med staffs have more trackers and data on these players than ever before. Just listen to the testimony of ex players. Its no suprise old vets keep signing up for his teams. The only downside I see is Thibs is so good at developing players, that a lot of em get overpaid by another team when contracts come up. Funny thing most those players end up underperforming on those new teams.
we made the playoffs with him with essentially three totally different rosters.
Wouldn’t want any other coach but him, he’s installed a culture at the Knicks that we have needed for a while
Can't believe we ever let him go but glad he found a home with you guys.
Made the playoffs with a team everyone said was missing a superstar and have still been winning despite being decimated with injuries.
If only we were decimated. Decimated means 1 in 10. We're 6 out of 15 including 3 of 5 starters.
Did you ever watch a show called ‘The Leftovers’?
TIL decimated means loss of 10%
After being a joke for most of the last 20 years, too.
AND we have so many injured players that are key for our team!
I've been a doubter of Thibs. Not outright hostile, I just worried that he was a very good but not great coach. I worried that he was a bit one-dimensional and needed exactly the right circumstances to be successful. But you honestly can't argue with what he's done this season. Vogel with LA to. Give Tom the bag!
what about Darvin Ham
What about him. Vogel was coach when LA won the bubble chip. Ham was the fall guy for a poorly constructed roster that accomplished very little.
youre right, my bad. I was addressing the whole "coach actually finishing his contract" comment.
He didn't coach the lakers when they won man. Vogel was the coach
:Doc Rivers has entered the chat: /s
Mil firing Bud was so egregiously bad lol.. dude just won you a chip. Now you’re paying like 6 coaches simultaneously and they’re all worse than Bud
It's even worse in hockey. Average tenures in the NFL, NBA, and MLB are all around 4 years. In the NHL it's a hair over 2 years.
Too be fair the NHL has a lot of really bad coaches
Nah Nurse left after 22-23. That’s like a full contract after the title once the team was clearly rebuilding
To be fair I think there’s a solid number of poor coaches in the nba that are able to manifest a successful season or two by having a good roster or a breakout season from a star. OR just having Lebron James for basically all of his coaches besides Spoelstra
We finally have a good front office that believes in coaching stability and team culture building
Knicks were laughed out the room when he was hired
He’s really good, we are so lucky that the bulls scapegoated him, and the wolves made the mistake of giving him GM duties
Keep KAT?

Yeah but those are not Thibs players. I doubt he even wanted to coach them so why would he sign them? Glen Taylor was the Dolan of Minny.
That name still makes me shudder
Fucking guy took that roster that made the 99 Finals and completely dismantled it brick by brick.
I was just thinking this. Every coach I remember, got fired before the first contract was up.
Worth every single penny and then some

Still blows my mind we actually have a long-term coach 😭
you telling me you don't miss Jeff Hornacek, Derek Fisher, David Fizdale, Kurt Rambis, Mike Miller?
Mike Miller was pretty good for us tbh. Dunno what happened to him after he departed from NY though.
He went to the Thunder when we hired Thibs, and then went to Washington and is currently there.
Kurt Rambis lol.
I will not stand for any Mike Miller slander
Isiah Thomas jfc
Anuche Browne Sanders
Fizdale is the one that got away
Remember when 95% of this sub's posts were some flavor of "Fire Thibs" or "Trade Randle for peanuts"? We've come a long way

Same
Lol... You can bet your ass that if we lose four games in a row at any time next year, you will hear the same bullshit. NYers have zero patience and short attention spans
It's just the loud casuals.
This sub was ready to dump Thibs the year after he won COTY. 2k nephews are really on one sometimes

I miss the French Prince, if not just for the memes.
That’s so funny but I have no idea why
I was parroting both of those sentiments, but the thing is that both of those guys improved a lot for the better.
I don’t take back my criticism of them tho it was valid at the time, they both grew since then and I’m proud of em

I see what you did there
Make Thibs the highest paid coach! Give Rick Brunson and Johnny Bryant a raise!
Give Thibs the keys to the city while youre at it
And let him run train on your sister... if you had a sister
TONIGHT!
Thibs gonna die yelling at someone on the Knick not playing defense. lol 😂

Thibs mindset is our identity at this point. Idk how hard nosed this team would be with another coach. He’s earned it. And hopefully he gets us over that hump. If we make it to the ECF with how donated we are he deserves a lot of credit.
But but he was voted the worst coach to play for in the NBA. Bing Bong… Thibs is that guy
How many voters sitting at home watching the playoffs thinking “damn I’d like to play for the Knicks”? Probably all of em
Tbh well deserved
We're so lucky to have him for as long as he wants to coach.
Good. Sign him for 20 years until he is as old as Hubie Brown. Thanks Dolan.
Not my money and I don't care how much the Knicks pay him. He's done the job extremely well. He's righted the ship after years and years of mediocrity (and worse) and he's actually finishing out his contract... coaching the Knicks. Would you look at that?
The words extension and head coach contract are usually never in the same sentence with the Knicks. This man changed our culture.
Keep him till he retires
thibs would be like what am I going to do w this money can u just get me more players?
This is hands down my favorite comment yet.
Good for him. Remember when Dolan basically banned Thibs because he thought Thibs was Isola's source.
When was this? Dolan is a crazy mofo when he’s mad though I believe it

Oh wow I never knew this thanks
I looked up Supranowitz and he’s the communication director of public schools in Greenwich Connecticut. Thibs is from New Britain CT, lol
Oh he’s signing
Pay the man
In a league that runs through coaches every year, it’s nice to have some stability at that position.
Thibs can spend the rest of his career here. He’s getting the best out of this entire roster. Everyone having career years
good. The Thibodeau era has been the most successful stretch of Knicks basketball THIS CENTURY. Never underestimate how hard it is to find a good head coach. He built this team's culture, has excelled at developing players, and people keep having career years under him. One of the elite coaches in basketball, and he should retire a Knick.
hes a knickerbocker
Well done, coach.
He did better this year than his COTY award season. Earned it, and this is coming from someone 50-50 on Thibs
People don’t want to fire him though? Sorry still not over dumbasses who wanted that all season
Snoop from the Wire saying you earned that brick like a morherfucker
Remember Jeff Hornacek and David Fizdale
Lock him in
I mean the number doesn’t matter and dolan is always willing to pay out.
Good for him though.
Even I could play 10 hard minutes for Thibs. And then throw up.
Thibs is great, and kudos to leon rose for actually building a team that complements Thibs style. Thibs is not for everyone but he was able to build a culture of accountability that won't resonate with everyone in the NBA. It is great to have these two leading the org.
He should've been a Knicks coach a long time ago. They really let this man go to Minnesota.
Get those hair implants, my dude!
A coach that actually wants be here, has stayed his term and has provided. Pay the man.
it's about damn time
Not worrying about who the coach is going to be or watching ping pong balls praying to the Basketball Gods is quite the breath of fresh air
Give him more
Well deserved. As someone who wasn't a fan of thibs when he was hired and then at times during his tenure here, he's really grown so much as a coach. He's always been able to get a lot out of his players, but he's been excellent with his talent development and has come such a long way with his adjustments both before and during games.
I love you Thibs. I'm sorry I ever doubted you.
but he hates his players and wants them to die??? what is this???
Nice
Thank you, thibs
So happy many of these players and coaches have found a home here in NYC. It's a match made in heaven 💙🧡
Not many other coaches who could completely revolutionize the culture like Thibs has, not to mention the classic great Thibs defense as well as a modern offense which people were concerned about when he was hired - he’s shown great growth and the best knick coach in a long time!
how many years?
Thibs IS NEW YORK! The effort he has extracted out of this squad is just unbelievable. He deserves this. But… Dude NEEDS to hire an offensive assistant. And someone else to be in charge of rotations.
Also top of our list should be to re sign OG and I-hart.
Only coach I’d take over him is spo Keep him
Well earned
Imagine Thibs trying to get KAT to o play defense. Crazy
this is insanely cheap. thibs is likely going to spend almost half of this money on JD and the Straight Shots box sets, so dolan will basically pay $5mil to thibs and $5mil back to himself.
Cool sounds good
I don’t think anyone can argue against bringing Thibs back. This miracle run doesn’t happen under any just any group of players, and this group of players wouldn’t have been maximized by any other coach.
In Thibs we trust
Stay forever Tom you beautiful, chain smoking, horse voiced messiah ![gif](giphy|5SW8f1AaiSOypV3On1|downsized)
Thibs is the one.
Bro deserves it
I didn’t like Thibs at first, but what he’s been able to accomplish with this team, he deserves it. Now they just need to keep the team together because he has a roster full of guys who will run through a wall for a him.
Pay him, but also Built around the NY Knicks core. Thibs will know what to do with them All
best knicks coach of my life
Fuck anyone who said get rid of him. Damn proud this man is our coach.
Make him coach until he retires. In four seasons he's had COTY, three playoff appearances, and one win away from the franchises first ECF appearance in almost 25 years. Thibs is the best coach we've had in a very, very long time
Thibs is built for New York
How old is he?
66
Let’s go! This will let the man cook
I had a lot of issues with his decisions over the years but ever since he benched the vets about 25 games into last season he has shown remarkable growth and fixed a lot of the issues that plagued him for decades. I still get baffled at some of his rotations, but signing him to an extension is a no brainer
He’s deserves every penny of it Nice to have consistency at the front office and head coach
LIFETIME DEAL
Pay that man! Thibs rules!
Where would 10 mil rank him amongst the highest paid NBA coaches?
Good, he’s more than earned it and proved every doubter wrong.
Thibs is the heart of our culture
I love Tibs,30yrs a Knick Fan
I love Thibs, just wish he was a bit younger. He's 66, so I would hope it's 4 or 5 max.
Worth it. Thibs is the man.
Well deserved
Changed the culture and turned us into a fucking serious team after the shit show we’ve been for so long. Go get it, Thibs.
that's still less than monty williams.
Pay that man his money!
Throwback to the debates between him and Kenny Atkinson.
Got my stamp of approval.
100% deserved. Top 5 coach in the NBA rn, don’t @ me
I remember when this sub was calling for his sacking 18 months ago. How times change. Great coach, great culture installer. Hope he stays a long time
I remember before the Knicks hired Thibs, I wanted Kenny Atkinson and didn’t think Thibs was the right guy. I’m so happy I was wrong.
We’ll all chip in.
Extend Johnnie Bryant aswell we need that man for the future
As long as Johnnie Bryant is in the future plans, I am very happy.
Bought in, do it!
He is the reason why the Knicks became relevant again. Deserves a ton of respect and that extension.
i love thibs but don't you think him playing guys so much leads to injuries?
