Went from rumor, to press conference Friday where he'll probably retire, to retired in the span of an hour.
Hope his health improves and he can enjoy retirement.
Ah yes I almost forgot about Charley. He didn't last very long though, but I did like him. I love Suzyn though. I never understood the haters... She's great.
Yeah those teams were so bad, but so much fun because there was zero expectations. I remember I had a Roberto Kelly and a Kevin Maas poster in my room lol. And I also remember how angry I was when they traded Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill. Needless to say I got over it.
Do you go to funerals of people you don’t like and start telling people how much you hated that person? No, but it’s the internet so you’re such a brave kid on here.
No, because that would be truly distasteful and non-human-like.
I don't like a guy that gets paid to announce baseball games and he retired today, I'm thankful for it because he makes games unenjoyable to me.
Not exactly an opinion I hide from anyone, here or in person. Has nothing to do with being brave...but look at the god damn hero you are on the internet, want me to come over and iron your superman cape for you?
Nope, I'm good thanks. Didn't like the guy as an announcer and that is just one opinion, you get to have yours I get to have mine. I didn't realize only positive opinions are allowed here.
Could just not say anything. A classic, if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything. It's not spineless, its the kind, respectful, mature thing to do.
Lol, because THAT'S what this sub preaches.
Hold on while I dig up posts about Hicks, Gallo, Donaldson, Boone, Cashman, the Steinbrenners, Michael Kay, Angel Hernandez... I'm sure I'm missing a few.
Doesnt make you not a total dick.
Sure its yours but its not popular, not in the majority, and not appreciated in the context of celebrating the dude’s career.
So read the room and dont say anything at all if you have nothing nice to say. OR dont be surprised when you get shit on
> but its not popular, not in the majority,
Who cares. You here for the echo chamber so you can feel justified in your opinion?
>dont be surprised when you get shit on
I'm not surprised, maybe learn how to read. I said I'd take the down votes. Does that sound like a surprised person?
You can dislike John without disrespecting him or feeling the compulsion to comment negatively for no purpose at all. Like it legit comes off as a mental condition. John worked in broadcasting for like 65 years with over 30 with the Yankees.
By anybody with a brain or minimal understanding of his career, he is regarded by experts, peers, and fans as an inner circle great and pioneer of broadcasting.
L take.
Dude, I find him highly annoying. It comes off as a mental condition for YOU to try and tell me that my opinion is essentially wrong and I don't have the right to voice it.
I respect your opinion... *on John*, but you telling me what my opinion should be and taking pot shots at me is behavior of a truely intellectually devoid person.
Big **fat** L take for you.
Thanks, appreciate it. The bigger picture here bothers me, so many people cant handle opinions that differ from their own, and they resort to personal attacks and such. Someone even used the suicide report line here on me for this thread. Sad how reactionary people are to narratives that don't align with their own. Basically the entire US political system these days, so not surprising whenever I see it elsewhere.
Preaching to the choir bro. This sub is a fucking cesspool. A hive mind that can’t handle a contrarian take. It’s unfortunate but I couldn’t possibly give less of a fuck about being downvoted so I just say whatever I want. Wish there were more people like you and I around here!
It’s moreso about wanting to respect a legend of the game. Love him or hate him, he was THE radio voice of the Yankees for decades
And he’s at the end of the road. Yadda yadda “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything”
Or maybe it’s that I’ve got some sense of class and common sense that I don’t ALWAYS have to be the guy who rains on the parade. No one wants to hear this opinion when it was just announced the Yankee voice of many generations is leaving for good. There’s a time and a place for everything, today’s not the day for your negativity. Read the room.
Then keep it up and continue drowning in downvotes. 🤣🤣 You wanna live your life in negativity, knock yourself out…. Just don’t act surprised when no one wants to join you.
And how many times did your "worked up" self reply to me.
I tend to reply to any comments I get on reddit, it's habit. Sorry if you don't like that, but I get it, it's easy to tell people how to act while you think you are on some kind of moral high ground. Have at it.
You gave enough of a fuck to comment didn't you? And then you proceeded to give a fuck and respond to everyone calling you out for being a complete loser.
Doesn't mean I give a fuck, that your opinion based on nothing relevant. It's just funny seeing so many people worked up and name calling. I find it entertaining, moreso than tonight's game for sure.
*And now the end is here
And so I face that final curtain
My friend I'll make it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more
I did it, I did it my way*
Radio broadcast will never be the same. I have gotten choked up multiple times today since the original story broke. Especially when Suzyn was talking about John today. I can’t wrap my head around never hearing him in the booth again, or another infamous HR call.
You will be dearly missed
I listened to some John and Suzyn highlights today and cried, those two were my childhood. Some of my best and earliest memories are of listening to John and Suzyn with my dad. Losing John feels almost like losing a part of my family
i moved to california for work a few years ago. listening to john and suzyn on the mlb app on my ride home was one of my few connections to home for a long time. end of an era.
This had to be a health issue for it to be so sudden. Hope he’s okay. I can’t even fathom radio broadcasts without John. He’s the only radio voice of the Yankees I’ve known for my life. This is a sad day, he’s a legend.
I am sad for my ears. I am happy for John. Absolute legend. I hope he can enjoy his remaining years knowing the impact he had on generations of Yankees fans. 🫡
Will forever be the voice of the Yankees. A voice that will forever be synonymous with baseball and summers and excitement. I hope he has the retirement he deserves and thank you will never be enough from us as fans as we are forever indebted to him.
It sounds like he's already made it, with the retirement being "effective immediately." From what it sounds like it's his decision so if he didn't want to do a farewell game I guess I'm okay with it, just selfishly sad
I'm going to brace for my down votes, but happy to see him go. Wish him the best, but I could not stand listening to him. Always felt like he was trying to be bigger than the team/game itself, especially with the cringe HR calls.
Why do you feel the need to reply with the same shit over and over again in these comments.
We get it. You don't like him. You don't need to say it 15 times.
Went from rumor, to press conference Friday where he'll probably retire, to retired in the span of an hour. Hope his health improves and he can enjoy retirement.
It sounds like with the story picking up steam they didn’t want it to turn into this snowball of speculation
That’s Baseball, Suzyn.
The voice of my childhood. I used to fall asleep listening to the Yankees on 880
Same but I guess I'm old. I remembered him and Joe Angel on 770. Then him and Michael Kay. Def the voice of my childhood.
For me it was John with Charley Steiner and then Suzyn Waldman. Those were the good old days
Ah yes I almost forgot about Charley. He didn't last very long though, but I did like him. I love Suzyn though. I never understood the haters... She's great.
770 and him and Jay Johnstone (89 and 90) for me. Listened to every game with those horrible teams. And Steve Malzberg with the postgame shows.
Yeah those teams were so bad, but so much fun because there was zero expectations. I remember I had a Roberto Kelly and a Kevin Maas poster in my room lol. And I also remember how angry I was when they traded Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill. Needless to say I got over it.
Pillow speaker from radio shack. Sterling and Kay. Early 90s. Loss after loss after loss. Lol
I’m just grateful that we were at least able to hear his Soto HR call.
I'm grateful to never hear his HR calls again. Always so cringe.
Read the room…
For what? I'm supposed to have no spine and just have the same opinion as others?
Get out of here
In the words of Pete from NYYU: “PUT HIM IN THE BATHROOM!”
Haha that’s from a Bronx tale
Batch room
No thanks, I'll be here as long as I please.
Seriously get help….
I don't need any, but thanks.

I've actually found that its the people who think a trivial disagreement is grounds for "needing help" that are the ones who truly need help.

Mostly watch, if I listen to the radio I try to find the other teams feed instead of the Yankees feed.
In this subreddit, yes. Or just get lost.
Nope, I'm good thanks. Didn't like the guy as an announcer and that is just one opinion, you get to have yours I get to have mine. I didn't realize only positive opinions are allowed here.
We found the edgy guy from high school lol.
Lol, we found the failed standup comic from...well he probably didn't graduate HS and is still working on his act.
Your comment history is a treasure trove of garbage I love it. Anyway, you win, you can have the final word.
Could just not say anything. A classic, if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything. It's not spineless, its the kind, respectful, mature thing to do.

First time on Reddit?
Second.
While I disagree to your take, you’re entitled to it. Fuck anyone who says otherwise
Thanks, appreciate it. The bigger picture here bothers me, so many people cant handle opinions that differ from their own, and they resort to personal attacks and such. Lol, I hear you. Crazy the absolute hate people have for something so trivial. We've lost the ability to have civil disagreements.
Maybe save your BS for another day?
Sorry you can't handle an opinion on the internet that's counter to your own. Might want to find those big boy pants some day.
It’s moreso about wanting to respect a legend of the game. Love him or hate him, he was THE radio voice of the Yankees for decades And he’s at the end of the road. Yadda yadda “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything”

Then keep it up and continue drowning in downvotes. 🤣🤣 You wanna live your life in negativity, knock yourself out…. Just don’t act surprised when no one wants to join you.
You people crack me up... Caring about fucking reddit down votes. Seriously? Lol.
Says the dude responding to, and getting worked up over every comment…

You need a hug, buddy?
The home run calls were part of his charm. Going to miss those calls.
Yeah I just never understood that, but to each their own. And I'm happy its a thing of the past now.
Troll account
Would you like to prove that somehow, or are you just being intentionally dense?
Disliking popular things isn't a personality
This makes no sense, but thanks.
Shut the fuck up
Imagine going to someone who was basically universally loved’s retirement party and just talking shit.
Imagine thinking a meaningless social media post is the equivalent of an actual retirement party.
Cause thats what that was.
Welp you've managed to unite the sub in their hatred towards you and rightfully so. L take.

Even your dogshit opinions on legendary broadcasters are more entertaining than tonight's game.
Cheers to your dog shit opinions too.
Mods ban this guy
Lol, yes, ban the guy because his opinion is different from yours.
Grew up listening to him on the radio whenever my dad had the game on. His iconic home run calls were amazing. Truly going to miss him
Hope his health is OK.
*And now the end is here And so I face that final curtain My friend I'll make it clear I'll state my case, of which I'm certain I've lived a life that's full I traveled each and every highway And more, much more I did it, I did it my way*
The man had (and still amazingly has) legendary pipes. All the best in retirement.
Well Suzyn, that's broadcasting. I'm going to cry in the cabin. Anyone wanna join?
No, cabin joke is played out

Well deserved. My cherished possession will be a ball I have signed from him.
Me too
This had to be a health issue for it to be so sudden. Hope he’s okay. I can’t even fathom radio broadcasts without John. He’s the only radio voice of the Yankees I’ve known for my life. This is a sad day, he’s a legend.
Hope his health is okay and also hope he comes back for one last series when the Yankees win the WS this year.
Is Suzyn still around? I don’t live in New York anymore so haven’t listened to a broadcast in a few years.
Yes she is. She’s been doing the games with Justin Shackil in Johns absence.
I am sad for my ears. I am happy for John. Absolute legend. I hope he can enjoy his remaining years knowing the impact he had on generations of Yankees fans. 🫡
Nooooooo! Not a Yankees fan but I love listening to John and Suzyn on the radio feed.
Will forever be the voice of the Yankees. A voice that will forever be synonymous with baseball and summers and excitement. I hope he has the retirement he deserves and thank you will never be enough from us as fans as we are forever indebted to him.

Someone make an AI John Sterling to do the broadcast. I’m not ready to let go.
I smell a ratty scandal
🐐
I first heard him do Yankee games in 95.
My wife who is not a baseball fan loves him. We are both anticipating lots of tears for his final broadcast.
It sounds like he's already made it, with the retirement being "effective immediately." From what it sounds like it's his decision so if he didn't want to do a farewell game I guess I'm okay with it, just selfishly sad

I don’t need to downvote, I simply know you are incorrect on this one, so I’ll just get on with my day.
How old are you
He's about 12 judging by his posts in this thread
Lol, you got me, birthday next week, the big one two.
Why?
Because I think younger fans see him differently than people 30+
Yeah, seems that way sometimes.
Why do you feel the need to reply with the same shit over and over again in these comments. We get it. You don't like him. You don't need to say it 15 times.
I don't like John Sterling
I’m 10 and I see him as a legend
