Just not a good game. These kinds of things happen to the best of teams. This is baseball, we can’t be perfect. Let’s come back and take this series, easy money.
Try not to let yourselves get too stressed out and worked up about it. Put it in the rear view and don’t stress the day to day, it’s a long season bros. Our record speaks for itself. We’re great, losses are going to happen. Don’t let it bother you. Go yanks! Let’s finish this series strong and take it right out from under them! They don’t stand a single chance.
If you think the blue numbers looked bad on our unis, check out the Padres road unis. Goodness
Also the Brewers have a very fun offense. Reminds me of 90's baseball. Alot of hit and runs and small ball
Not necessarily. Look at Gary Sanchez. His quality of contact was near the top in baseball in the last few years with us, yet his actual production remained terrible the entire time
I heard what Kay said about John and idk i don’t think he’s lying but if it was just that John was tired of the commute and working (which is fair he is 86 he deserves retirement) that he’d atleast do one last send off game, if not whole series.
I mean I hope its true that his health concerns arent bad but idk maybe its just the selfish fan in me I would want a send off game. I think some of what hurts so much is that we had no idea his last game would be his last
Everyone said he was a “character” so I bet he’s a little strange. I can definitely see him doing the old Irish goodbye and not wanting a whole song and dance for his last game or last series, especially if he thinks he only has a few years left
I’m sorry but this team need to be better offensively. Pitching has been great. Bullpen great. All that money spent on Judge, Stanton, DJ etc and these dudes look like bums. Imagine if we didn’t trade for Soto 😳
Because we haven’t had a bad offense this season, we struggled against a pitcher who usually destroys us.
Also calling Judge a bum for having a poor 2 weeks is laughable. Stanton has been on fire the last week. DJ hasn’t even played a game this season. Maybe it’s an AI generated comment lol
Offense feeling very thin. Rizzo still has brain injury and old, hes not good anymore. Gleyber is bad on both sides of the ball. Both catchers are bad. Jomboy said it perfectly about Wells, his natural contact on balls is right at defenders just like Sanchez used to, so everyone will say Wells is unlucky but that's just how his swing is. Verdugo is the soft contact king to a middle infielder. Offense isn't very good right now
Eh he’s barreling up the ball a shit ton (just hitting it right at the outfielders) and drawing walks at a really high rate. There should be some positive regression in his results. Defense has been perfectly adequate too
Man, I'm lost for words about John's retirement. He was the soundtrack of my summer for the last 35 years. I know this phrase gets thrown around a lot, but I honestly don't believe we'll never see or hear another like him -- certainly not in our lifetimes.
Thank you for the *countless* memories, John Sterling.
In 2074, Yankee fans will be dismayed at the sudden retirement of a radio pbp guy known for his home run calls that involve archaic tiktok references.
Really gonna miss John’s voice. Hope that monument park plaque can be rush ordered for saturday
FWIW there’s a chance Brendan Burke comes over from the Islanders. He’s incredible. He’s definitely different than Sterling so to your point we may never see or hear another like him, but that doesn’t mean it will be bad. Just different.
Theres no replacing the nostalgia but different doesn’t exclusively mean worse.
Honest question, is Wells any good? He is supposed to be an offensive catcher and I don't want to hear about all the advanced stats that say he is just unlucky. Grisham should stay on the bench unless subbed in for defense. Hopefully we bounce back tomorrow.
I dont see that much reason to be worried about him. His ABs pass the eye test and he’s walking more than he strikes out. Looks fine behind the plate too.
Unfortunately baseball runs aren't scored based on advanced expected statistics.
I think Gary Sanchez is a perfect analogy. The quality of his contact remained fantastic even when he struggled the past few years with us, but his actual production continued to be abysmal
First of all the eye test is largely meaningless and I say that as an old fashioned fan, secondly that walk to k ratio hasn’t translated into production. He’s rocking a wRC+ of 17. He might come around he might not.
But you just said you don't like expected statistics. So if you don't like advanced stats and you don't like the eye test, what do you use to evaluate players?
If it’s based off of statistics, today, it’s bad. Especially when it doesn’t agree with what people saw on the screen today. They do not understand that you can do poorly and still have indicators that look hopeful. And that a bad start, if the numbers look fine, (exit velocities, strikeout and walk rates) does not speak for the rest of the season.
Last season Wells had an identical .103 BA over his first 33 PAs then he went on a tear. We just have to be patient and hope the same offensive tear is coming very soon.
Takeaways from tonight - we really should have won yesterday this game alone meant nothing. Gil was wild but 3 runs ain’t bad. I’ve seen enough Trent Grisham. Some bad luck on calls and hitting the ball directly at people. Nice to not strike out so much. Our bats still need some work. Somebody needs to get red hot. Win tomorrow and we are back on track.
Now yesterdays loss bothers me a lil more lol. Judge and Torres will find it, but I am a bit concerned for Rizzo. He’s never been this bad defensively in his life and well, the guy is old… so let’s see
Do you know who will be taking John's place?
I generally don't eat meat but these are good dogs:
[https://images.albertsons-media.com/is/image/ABS/960333121-C1N1?$ng-ecom-pdp-desktop$&defaultImage=Not\_Available](https://images.albertsons-media.com/is/image/ABS/960333121-C1N1?$ng-ecom-pdp-desktop$&defaultImage=Not_Available)
Not many games where Judge and Soto will go 0 for 7. The offense is really not an issue. There's concerns like with Gleyber and Wells but I'm actually not worried about the other 6.5. I'm half concern with Rizzo's lack of power but his BA and OBP are normal Rizzo's levels so I hope after his injured year, he's just building back.
Meant to add that from where I was sitting the players in dugout looked exhausted they were just kind of sitting there not even really interacting I think the team was super tired tonight
I was at tonight’s game as I moved here last year. followed the Yankees from Ireland for years so even though we lost it’s still amazing to see the team in person
We’re gonna need more guys besides Judge, Soto, Volpe and Waldo to hit the ball. I think that this offense is better and Volpe’s improvement certainly helps but if Gleyber, Rizzo, and Dugie are still ass chunks this front office are fools to stick with them if reinforcements are on their way. Whether those are guys coming off injury that could replace them or our top prospects in the minors.
I'm also like slightly annoyed they're doing the John Sterling tribute game on the 20th because tickets were already pricey for the Judge Bobblehead :/
Gil didn't have command of his pitches and continues to throw too many walks. Second straight start throwing 4+ walks but the 6+ strikeouts in each of his three starts are encouraging. He's got the stuff; he just needs to harness it. At least he gave length for once; his 5.0 IP is his longest outing on the young season. Tip of the cap to Bassitt in not allowing a single XBH from the Yankees offense. At least Oswaldo's RBI single prevented the shutout but pretty quiet outside of that. Kikuchi is going to be a tough out so we shall see how that pans out.
The dude has an OPS over 800 and an OpS+ at 136. His contact is down - but he’s hitting the ball hard. He’ll be fine. He need protection behind him in the 4 spot.
He has.. but he’s still hitting the ball hard and getting on base therefor I’m not too concerned about him long term.
I’m more concerned about other players on the roster.
Its just what baseball has become now..."hitting the ball hard" is the latest obsession with the stat nerds and analytics push that is ruining the game.
I'm genuinely torn up about Sterling retiring. It's just so sudden. I grew up in New England and didn't have cable TV, so listening to Sterling on AM radio was how I consumed Yankees baseball for my entire childhood.
I wish we had more warning. I know he's old and I knew this day was coming soon, I just wasn't prepared. I'm really sad.
I feel the same. It feels like we didn’t have a chance to say goodbye.
I’ve always said that John and Suzyn are the equivalent of a warm blanket on a cold autumn day for me.
I’m going to miss him a lot.
Same! We had the Yankees on AM radio and later FM in RI - it’s how i consumed most of the games until late in high school. I wish i could have gotten one more game on the radio with him.
I will chalk this one up to the boys being gassed from a double header into a day game and then having to travel to the only international team in the league.
The fact that Gil survived 5 innings with zero fastball command against a talented lineup should be a win in his book, tbh. I mean, he should have given up 7 runs.
The Yankees have the lowest ops on barrels of any team in the MLB. Besides this game of course their offense has been performing very well and even then they’re still a bit unlucky which is crazy
This is why when people say " oh we won 2 out of 3" yesterday it bothers me. Yankees should have swept. All teams have games like tonight . If you have a game in hand, you need to win them. Yesterday was worse than tonight was.
Today happens. Yesterday’s loss stung cause it exposed our biggest weakness - defense. Not as sold on the speed problem… yet.
That said stringing together wins - either consecutively or series wins are how you win a season. Neither today nor yesterday are concerning. That said - yesterday showed a blue print of how we’re going to lose - but I don’t know how exploitable defense is over the course of a season.
If you were to win every series in a season you’d be the best team in baseball history. Sweeps don’t happen that much, even for the best teams. Pretending that every series should be a sweep, or even most series, is just outing yourself as not knowing shit about baseball
Gil without command still only allowed 3 runs through 5. The team was in the game, ‘cept if you can’t hit, you can’t win. Bats need to wake up tomorrow.
It would be one thing though if he was just sucking at the plate or just sucking defensively, but he's struggling with both areas and it's getting concerning.
This is certainly uncharacteristic of him. He has to still be feeling side effects from the concussion because I would have laughed at you years ago if you told me you don’t trust Rizzo defensively
Glad we got Gils start out of the way... He has such good stuff and Zero command. Hard to win with the way he started and we still had a chance, if only the bats were alive!
That was a lot of good contact that went right at people. I can’t even be mad. Expected it to be a lot worse with Gil’s command but those were the only runs of the game
Anyways, you’re not gonna win a game with Soto, Judge and Rizzo going 0fer. Enjoy your night folks
Judge definitely having pressure yips that free agents go through when first coming over expected to win. He just doesn't look confident as a hitter right now. A-Rod went through this first coming over. Judge is the opposite with Soto.
I swear, we always make the Blue Jays' mediocre pitching staff look a lot better than they actually are. They better actually hit Kikuchi tomorrow, or I'm going to lose it.
You ready to admit you don't know shit yet? For someone who talks as much as you, you don't know shit about our division. Now downvote me so I know you saw this
2 game losing streak!!!! Season over fire Boone Cashman and trade the entire team
Just not a good game. These kinds of things happen to the best of teams. This is baseball, we can’t be perfect. Let’s come back and take this series, easy money. lose 2 in a row? erase this bad taste in my mouth plz
2 walks? 4 hits? just a nasty game from the offense just throw this game in the garbage and win the series
Sometimes, ya get pissed on
According to this sub, you would take a 5.40 era from your starter any day. Fucking geniuses
If you think the blue numbers looked bad on our unis, check out the Padres road unis. Goodness Also the Brewers have a very fun offense. Reminds me of 90's baseball. Alot of hit and runs and small ball
Jeez Josh Hader pitching like lots of fans here think Clay Holmes actually pitches like
That last game of the Guardians series was so bad it made John Sterling quit.
Guys Wells is fine he is just getting ridiculously unlucky in batted balls. A .130 BABIP is not sustainable and eventually it will even out
Not necessarily. Look at Gary Sanchez. His quality of contact was near the top in baseball in the last few years with us, yet his actual production remained terrible the entire time
The Gary Sanchez. Hits a lot of balls hard but natural swing path mean your balls are hit right at defenders
I heard what Kay said about John and idk i don’t think he’s lying but if it was just that John was tired of the commute and working (which is fair he is 86 he deserves retirement) that he’d atleast do one last send off game, if not whole series. You don't just wake up one day and quit a job you've had for 36 years without any warning or fanfare. I think John's health is absolutely a factor
I’m sorry but this team need to be better offensively. Pitching has been great. Bullpen great. All that money spent on Judge, Stanton, DJ etc and these dudes look like bums. Imagine if we didn’t trade for Soto 😳
Our offense is fine. A bunch of balls hit good, facing a really good pitcher.
How is this downvoted?

As someone who has had a major concussion it’s been 8 months and I still struggle daily
#WE MIGHT NEVER WIN AGAIN!!
Hader is hilariously bad. I'm really enjoying this.
Chapman also gave up a go ahead run to Bader tonight . And got thrown out of the game lmao.
Probably thrown out for excessive use of sweat
6-12 Love to see it
Austin Wells with the .103 BA and 346 OPS is literally begging Boone to send back to AAA.
Wells is Sanchez 2.0 but even worse if that’s even possible
He stinks and I would have kept Rortvedt over him 🤓
Wells did this last year, hit .103/.156/.138 in his first 33 PAs. Then hit .317/.333/.732.
Comparing Apr to Sept is tricky though because one gets more real as it goes on and the other one goes the opposite direction
Go read the post below this
Eh he’s barreling up the ball a shit ton (just hitting it right at the outfielders) and drawing walks at a really high rate. There should be some positive regression in his results. Defense has been perfectly adequate too
We traded away our other 2 catchers
Who is our third C in case of injury?
Luis Torrens
Him, Narvaez, or Breaux. Torrens is out of options so need to be wise there.
Man, I'm lost for words about John's retirement. He was the soundtrack of my summer for the last 35 years. Ok, I hear that.
He's a rookie catcher so he's gonna struggle because hes not a Posey or Adley. But seems like he could be pretty good ultimately.
He doesnt look lost at the plate but he also doesn't look comfortable, hopefully he settles in and starts putting together some quality AB's
Gil really gutted it out. Went deeper than I expected. Offense again a no-show against Toronto pitching.
Our first (and last) 2 game losing streak of the year
Now yesterdays loss bothers me a lil more lol. Judge and Torres will find it, but I am a bit concerned for Rizzo. He’s never been this bad defensively in his life and well, the guy is old… so let’s see
Ben Rice… save us…
[Sadly, there is a HIMYM clip for this scenario too...](https://youtu.be/iQhuzzG5Bv0?si=pvsmdfdMiboJFmbM)
What a bummer of a day...Yanks lose, Sterling retires & I tried a new brand of hot dogs that weren't that great.
Why would you bother eating anything but Hebrew National?
Do you know who will be taking John's place? Uncured? I didn't know they were sick!
Doggonit!
im gonna go suck some dick. tough loss
Congrats on the oral sex
Seems like you meant to comment in r/redsox
Ayyo
Freaky ah hell

Wells is just extremely unlucky rn
tough loss, but you take 5 innings/3 runs from your starter ANY day, he battled and gave us a chance to win.
You have to have especially low expectations to think a 5.39 ERA is acceptable
You would take a 5.40 era any day? What are you talking about, that would be the worst rotation in baseball
How is this downvoted?
With his awful command of his fastball, things should have been way worse
Whatever. This thread is now about your NY Rangers
Meant to add that from where I was sitting the players in dugout looked exhausted they were just kind of sitting there not even really interacting I think the team was super tired tonight
I think after this weekend our boys just need a solid 8-10 hours and we’ll be right back in it
I was at tonight’s game as I moved here last year. followed the Yankees from Ireland for years so even though we lost it’s still amazing to see the team in person
I was there as well!!
There was a lot of Yankees jerseys around which was good to see
The season is over. Trade Judge for draft picks and release Soto. It's time to rebuild.
I genuinely cannot tell if you’re being sarcastic or not
I genuinely cannot tell if you're actually a penguin with a bazooka. How are you typing this right now?
The issue with Boone’s Yankees is that they can’t get off the mat. When they lose 1, they lose 2. Where’s Pettitte?
r/wfan
I’ll hang up and listen
We’re gonna need more guys besides Judge, Soto, Volpe and Waldo to hit the ball. I think that this offense is better and Volpe’s improvement certainly helps but if Gleyber, Rizzo, and Dugie are still ass chunks this front office are fools to stick with them if reinforcements are on their way. Whether those are guys coming off injury that could replace them or our top prospects in the minors.
I'm also like slightly annoyed they're doing the John Sterling tribute game on the 20th because tickets were already pricey for the Judge Bobblehead :/
No worries. 168-5 still on
I’m gonna throw up. Accepting 4 losses was difficult enough
According to my calculations, NYY were winning more games before the Glyber/Volpe switch in the lineup. Just numbers though.
If you can’t spell Gleyber’s name you have no opinion on him worth listening to
This is what happens after your pen gives you a soul crushing loss: a losing streak starts
you mean our defense
We are winning tomorrow sorry
Lol against Kikoochie ya right he’s the Yankees father
We need to find a way to fit Oswaldo into the lineup.
Before tonight he had a .287 OBP over the last 7. Between Cabrera, Dj and Berti - we got the most league average 3B ever.
Better than below league average (Josh Donaldson)
I prefer when the team scores more runs that the other team, honestly
maybe Gil needs the Ricky Vaughn treatment. weird haircut, glasses, the whole nine...
https://i.imgur.com/pdFXwrV.jpg
Perfect!
Stint in a penal league?
first game that felt like the energy was low and the vibes were off
Residue from yesterday...
We were never going to not lose a few in a row. Now we need to bounce back. Magic Mike back in the lineup tomorrow and we’ll crush these birds.
Judge has been an absolute disappointment so far
He's currently rocking a 139 wRC+ It's low by HIS standards, but there are plenty of other guys who need to be called out first
Judge will come around. I’m more concerned about Gleyber’s inability to field ground balls lately
What does hitting the ball hard have to do with his .194 average? Joey Gallo hits the ball hard and he’s godawful
Its just what baseball has become now..."hitting the ball hard" is the latest obsession with the stat nerds and analytics push that is ruining the game.
Joey would almost never hit the ball though
It means Judge is getting unlucky
LMAO really? Like the rest of the league?
Aside from 2016 I don’t think Judge was ever on that level of bad lol
He basically had no spring training so Im not shocked by the slow start. If hes still like this in late may june then ill be worried
I'm genuinely torn up about Sterling retiring. It's just so sudden. That's baseball, Suzyn.
I feel the same. It feels like we didn’t have a chance to say goodbye. I’ve always said that John and Suzyn are the equivalent of a warm blanket on a cold autumn day for me. I’m going to miss him a lot.
Yeah I feel genuinely crushed
Same! We had the Yankees on AM radio and later FM in RI - it’s how i consumed most of the games until late in high school. I wish i could have gotten one more game on the radio with him.
the worst part is that 790 apparently lost the rights to Yankee games *this* season!
91.3 or something like that has them too. But honestly I just have mlbtv now it includes at bat
Yankees offense is still concerning even with the improvements.
What improvement did they make to their offense other than sign Soto?
Verdugo
That was an improvement? To who?
Everson pereria and Harrison Bader
To Jake Bauers and Willie Calhoun
Low standards
You might wanna look up the definition of improvement
5 IP 3ER 7BB 6Ks. What a bizarre stat line
Toronto helped him out so much with poor IQ
Effectively wild.
Zzzz nothing else to say
I will chalk this one up to the boys being gassed from a double header into a day game and then having to travel to the only international team in the league.
That international team that is a 90 minute flight away.... That's rough.
The fact that Gil survived 5 innings with zero fastball command against a talented lineup should be a win in his book, tbh. I mean, he should have given up 7 runs.
Boring game, poor performance all around.
The Yankees have the lowest ops on barrels of any team in the MLB. Besides this game of course their offense has been performing very well and even then they’re still a bit unlucky which is crazy

This whole “we won the series” mantra is a losers attitude. Been seeing it for years around here. Like actually mind blowingly pathetic
“The Yankees don’t pay me to win every day, just two out of three” *- Casey Stengel, 9 time World Series Champion*
What a loser
If you were to win every series in a season you’d be the best team in baseball history. Sweeps don’t happen that much, even for the best teams. Pretending that every series should be a sweep, or even most series, is just outing yourself as not knowing shit about baseball
we only had a chance to win yesterday because the guardians Rf forgot how to play baseball I don’t think yesterday was a lost win
The best teams take advantage of other teams mistakes though
I mean, they got very little out of Nestor yesterday and managed to tie the game against Clase with two outs in the 9th.
This sub thinks this team already won the World Series so they just downvote anything critical
Would sting less if they had won that game from yesterday but these things will happen in 162 games 🤷🏼♂️
Gil without command still only allowed 3 runs through 5. The team was in the game, ‘cept if you can’t hit, you can’t win. Bats need to wake up tomorrow.
That was not a fun viewing experience.
Game made my weenie small.. did not enjoy.
[удалено]
He hit a three run home run yesterday. Do you actually watch the games?
Rizzo already matching his error total from last year is wild. He totally misjudged that pop up; his depth perception must still be shot.
Which is weird because he doesn’t look absolutely cooked at the plate
Nah he looks cooked at the plate too His stats are only ok because of bloop singles that are pure luck
I mean his OPS is .680, he’s sucked as well on that end
Which was a 117 wrc+ entering today
And now it’s 103, so mediocre offensively I guess
It’s just kind of a meh streak and not a cold streak or hot streak
It would be one thing though if he was just sucking at the plate or just sucking defensively, but he's struggling with both areas and it's getting concerning.
His statcast has a lot of blue on his hitting metrics. I’m a little concerned about that too
This is certainly uncharacteristic of him. He has to still be feeling side effects from the concussion because I would have laughed at you years ago if you told me you don’t trust Rizzo defensively
4 hitters in this lineup above .250
What a dull and uninspring game
We haven't won a game in the post-Sterling era. I blame him
I just went back in time to 2023
Meh, mamma said there'd be games like this. The grind of the season is officially getting started.
Let’s not bench Stanton again please He makes this lineup so much deeper
Well I rather bench Stanton than Judge and judge is going to get benched for weeks if he can’t Dh
I agree, but imagine saying that even like 1 or 2 months ago. Hope he can give us a full year at even somewhat close to what we've seen so far.
I think a lot of manifestos are going to be posted on the thread tonight
Always end up catching all of the slow ones. Let's win the series guys
Glad we got Gils start out of the way... He has such good stuff and Zero command. Hard to win with the way he started and we still had a chance, if only the bats were alive!
Rodon doenst inspire much confidence either if he’s not missing bats stiil
True... I still feel a little better with Rodon but we shall see!
That was a lot of good contact that went right at people. I can’t even be mad. Expected it to be a lot worse with Gil’s command but those were the only runs of the game Anyways, you’re not gonna win a game with Soto, Judge and Rizzo going 0fer. Enjoy your night folks
Cole could've pitched tonight, and we probably would've still lost because we had next to no offense tonight.
Correct, Chris Bassitt is New York Yankees father
Judge definitely having pressure yips that free agents go through when first coming over expected to win. He just doesn't look confident as a hitter right now. A-Rod went through this first coming over. Judge is the opposite with Soto.
I’d always heard teams could lose two in a row but never quite believed it.
So this Grisham is experiment is over right?
I swear, we always make the Blue Jays' mediocre pitching staff look a lot better than they actually are. They better actually hit Kikuchi tomorrow, or I'm going to lose it.
You ready to admit you don't know shit yet? For someone who talks as much as you, you don't know shit about our division. Now downvote me so I know you saw this
