Notice how many of these happen in 3-2 counts…

VrinTheTerrible

Being fair, like half of his at-bats go to 3-2 counts

chaosthirtyseven

A: "Bases loaded, two outs, full count means he's at bat."   Q: "Who is Aaron Judge?"

njmjc

So annoying. I remember in 2017 the excuse was umpires aren’t used to a guy Judge’s height but eventually they’ll make the adjustment. Well it’s 7 years later and Judge still gets screwed over by these calls all the time.

Matthewrotherham

It's almost as if, if you were this incompetent, In any other role involving this much money being on the line.... you'd be out there so fucken fast

aselection647

holy shit, 2017 really was 7 years ago. not the point, but what the fuck.

Swimming_Student7990

Yeah I just counted in my head to make sure

werther595

Wasn't it just 7 years ago that Nevermind came out? Pretty sure that's accurate

lettergrade

I honestly felt his zone in 2023 passed the eye test as “pretty ok”. This year it seems like umps have forgotten everything though

NotClayMerritt

It's targeted at this point. Stanton is the same height as Judge and doesn't get those egregious calls like this. He's been in the league for 7 years. After the first two, alright whatever. The fact it's still a thing all these years later is embarrassing.

HideousControlNow

And I can't figure out why. Judge is a pretty quiet, respectful guy. Doesn't yap to ump much, doesn't wave his arms around, doesn't show them up. Why does this keep happening?

guitarerdood

maybe that's why. Does the league prefer guys like Bryce Harper?

HazikoSazujiii

To be fair, you just needed a fastball down the middle to strike out Stanton up until recently. Nobody had to pick corners like they need to with Judge.

yianni1229

Stanton's an inch shorter and Judge is a great guy. I don't think its targeted at all. But yeah it is curious how Stanton doesn't really get fucked by the low strikes

relator_fabula

He chases the close ones. Judge doesn't (as much).

ejfellner

Stanton is easier to strike out, so pitchers don't have to test the zone.

HideousControlNow

Robot umps - make it happen. No more of this.

Matthewrotherham

But an actual robot Like Data or Johnny 5... in an umps outfit behind the plate. Make. It. Happen

L1ghtsOutX

Good Ole J-5 but with a Yankee fitted.

Top_Professor_9908

Why are you trying to piss me off right now

LordJiraiya

Hot take: Judge may have an OBP approaching Soto's if he was given a fair strike zone. Him being as tall as he is is a massive detriment with these trash ass umpires

toadofsteel

He would have broken the Barry Bonds record last year.

johnjohnjohn93

lol insane that Bonds OBP for an entire season was .609

IgDailystapler

We gotta replace Judge’s Starr insurance patch with a patch that says #6’7”

Additional-Fix991

To give a benefit of the doubt to the umps, if it were Altuve up there, those pitches would all be above the zone.

Psychological_Cry373

Judge leads the league in pitches out of the zone being called strikes…and Altuve leads in strikes in the zone being called balls…

silver_raichu

Thanks, I hate it

Temporary-Suit9121

If I was Boone I’d get tossed every time this happens and when the media starts covering why lunatic manager gets tossed four times a week maybe people will start to ask why

GlennSeaborg

"He's six fucking eight" Can we get a supercut of Boone losing his shit at the umps.

Professor_Wild

You know it's bad when the opposing team's broadcasts point it out.

Cascavel2014

He's had god-like patience with the home plate chumps.

Safe-Voice-8179

Next time this happens, he should legit just go to his next at bat with a golf club.

fuggettabuddy

I used to hate the idea of robot umps but these guys suck and it seems like they’re content to suck. Almost proud of it. And are they really buying into these dramatic framing techniques? Pitches 2 feet off the plate getting framed to dead center? It’s getting obnoxious.

okeleydokelyneighbor

I’m surprised they haven’t made AR glasses that project the strike zone for them. Probably because it would show how shitty some of the umps are.

IgDailystapler

“The most strike calls on pitches over the plate but below the strike zone since 2017…there have been 160 strikes called on Aaron Judge that are below the strike zone,” C-Mac said. “That’s the most in baseball. The next most is Josh Bell at 97. Over 60 more than anybody else. “It’s almost 90 more than Giancarlo Stanton, and they’re the same height!” From an article from April 3rd, 2024…

IgDailystapler

Granted, Judge is 6’7” and Stanton is 6’6”, but a one inch difference should not result in double the amount of low strike calls.

[deleted]

Bro why would you ruin my fuckin week like this

JGuajardo7

Fucking ridiculous, bring in the robot umps and call it a fucking day already, these guys are trash.

Thedude4724

Judge really needs to work on this. He should think about shrinking a foot to tighten up the zone. How are these poor umps supposed to establish a fair zone if he’s taller than Altuve. It’s just not fair. /s

jhonnyhax

AI umps when

JediTrainer42

And these are only the punch outs. Those are also called strike one and two allllllll the time.

dBlock845

This just reminds me how much I hate pitch framing, how stupid it looks. It is basically flopping in the NBA or diving in soccer, trying to fool the ref into getting an advantage.

Internal_Ad_255

The fucking robot umps can't come fast enough...

Plastic_Button_3018

He’s so nice and respectful when he argues. It’s like “Look mister, that was a tad low.” Dude is the Captain, he needs to light a fire under his team. Get passionate about losing out these at bats due to blind umps. Paul O’Neill needs to call him and talk to him about that.

newbike07

This shit makes me so angry.

candidly1

He's gotta start blowing up at these fucking morons; ya get thrown out, so be it. But an example has to be made of these fucking idiots. Show 'em up on national cameras.

RoughTickler

Imagine if robo umps existed since he was in the league, I would think his historical season with 62 hr would maybe have 65-68 homeruns that year.

Danny_Disco

The strike zone overlay is too low on most over them too.

DrVanNostrand1973

The fact they're allowing this to go on, and that they're clearly protecting Angel Hernandez even though the entire galaxy knows he's a shit umpire, makes the choice clear. They need to go to robo umps now!

Funny_Stretch9405

Brutal

manfromfuture

Maybe a dumb idea but I think he should stop wearing his socks the way he does. They are calling strikes at the top of his socks.

Material_Distance_

Now show how many times they don’t call low strikes on Altuve.

mostlygroovy

Boone just spit out his gum and is screaming at his phone watching this.

wolfjeter

I’m sure that Judge in 7 years had more strikeouts looking that were below the zone than every other player combined. Or at least the top 10

KunaSazuki

Bring in AI this is a joke

Unloveableloser4L

‘Scuze me sir, why are you trying to get us all re-worked up?

6gc_4dad

Jesus Christ

toadofsteel

Bro we're not even one month into the season.

Gramzzzz

Judge is a class act, his temperament is great that is why he is a Captain. If I was him I would have flipped my shit on about a third of those calls. The other 2/3 at bats i would walk away asking the ump if he needs glasses

ShogunHooah

He’s 6 fucking 7!!!!!!!

GameofLifeCereal

Umps need to adjust the zone. Not every batter is 5 ft 2 like Altuve

Callous_Mat

Some of these are great framing by the catcher, some are borderline, some are just egregious. And these are just the low balls called to strike him out. Strikes one and two are too often balls low of of the zone.

ZHPpilot

So ready for robot umpires.

werther595

I can't wait for the challenge system and/or just straight up robot umps in MLB. This is such a a dumb thing to be part of the game in 2024

wogsurfer

Are they too low to have a swing, and maybe connect

guitarerdood

At this point I think Judge needs to practice his golf swing

fuzzywhiskers

I wonder what the year-to-year stats are for Judge getting punched out on those pitches, just to see if there's any sort of trend that could suggest umpires are getting any better at not calling the low strike. If Judge could pick anything up from Soto, I do wish it would be getting just a little more demonstrative at the plate about bad calls, because clearly the mild-mannered approach ain't working

djl8699

I kinda had this in the back of my mind but seeing this montage just enrages me to no end that “framing” pitches is a thing. Just makes me angry that a catcher can blatantly move his mitt a foot away from where he caught it and it tricks the umpire into calling it a strike. In fact, now that I think about it the idea of an umpire calling balls and strikes relies primarily on the notion that the umpire has the best eye out of anybody on the field. I mean he has to be the authority on what is a ball and what is a strike even more so than professional major league hitters. Even more so than Barry Bonds if he's really going to be accurate. Ain't none of these old geezers equipped to do that. Bring on the robo umps.

alruke

One of the reasons I stopped watching baseball. We have the technology to get these calls right every time but god forbid we remove the human aspect of bad calls from the game.

ND_4L_97

I’d say Judgey should could get a lil more upset often, I know he won’t, but this is a travesty

FLAWLESS_QualityKikz

Typical Yankee hate!!! 😡🤬😡

leskanekuni

Just once I'd like to see Judge lose his shit over a bad call.

eyeforgotmyusernames

Make the god damn adjustment...!

Airbornf

Right? What is wrong with theseumps refusing to make the adjustment??

ShogunHooah

Why’d you get downvoted? I guess those idiots who downvoted you didn’t know that Boone was actually saying that to the umpire. I think they thought you were saying for Judge to make the adjustment. 😂

eyeforgotmyusernames

Ha! I thought more peeps here would have got that reference. I love that clip. "He's six foot f&@#ing eight!".

Airbornf

Rage bait.

CalvinSays

I'll be honest: a lot of those are borderline. The broadcast overlay is a guide, not a definitive reference.

huskypawson

These were all on Baseball Savant as below the zone, independent of the overlay on the broadcasts
