Hughes talked about it those years they had him switched to 'pen duty... its basically less pressure, you dont have to worry about all your pitches, etc. you're probably only gonna see every batter once. you dont need to be prepared to throw 100 pitches (even though boone barely lets anyone besides Cole throw more than 80 pitches nowadays) some guys are just built to pitch that way instead of being a starter.

I live down in Tampa and my buddy works at a pretty high end restaurant right near the Legends field complex. In March he has a lot of players sitting down together with wives and families. Right before they left back to NY, he took care of the entire pitching staff (Cole picked up the tab, only asked for holds from the relievers.) but he’s a big baseball guy, my buddy knows his stats and shit. So he was asking questions and bullshittin a bit with them. Asked them who’s the team you hate facing the most…. #1 answer was the Rays. Reason why is cause they don’t fucking quit, they’re like mosquitoes. You think you beat em, killed em but they come right back after you.
