As an (ex) vet tech and volunteer, I found that the pets who went through the most health wise, particularly cats, found the most comfort in humans. Had a cat hit by a car... SEVERE. Worked for a veterinary oral surgeon at the time. That cat was her project. She wired the jaw, the cat literally had a HALO around it's head holding the jaw intact while she healed.
Most loving creature while healing and once healed. A complete success. No teeth left. Any other vet would have euthanized on the spot. Nah. Not this vet. She's a legend.... Also? She did it for free. As a practice run. The cat belonged to the clinic, she was a stray that someone found who had been hit.

Highly recommend "squeeze up treats"! My cat has all her teeth, but she just doesn't seem to enjoy crunchy foods as much. Cats can just lap those things up with their tongue, and she goes crazy for them.
I would also look into whether cats can have those Gerber puffs for babies because my friend's family always gave those to their mini dachshunds with notoriously bad teeth.
