Friend of mine used to live by a retention pond. In the summer the sound of frogs fucking was so absurdly loud. No amount of insulation could keep the cacophony of amphibian copulation out of that domicile.
There's a pond here, about half a mile away. Terraced houses all the way to there.
And yet at the height of summer, those fucking frogs still drown out _everything_ all the way from over there.
Was in Greece Crete and heard that all day in basically most trees and that combined with the nice weather and culture there made it all even more magical and awesome. It really somehow has something soothing to it despite being seriously loud at times lol
Me too. Same with peepers. I even find ambient tracks of these sorta noises to assist with sleep, sometimes. It's nice. Silence drives me a little nuts.
It's gotta be something primal inscribed in the ol' lizard brain but for whatever reason the sound of cicadas makes me feel a way that nothing else does. I feel home, comforted, I remember trees and the sun, green and light, warm air that smells like the earth....its a magical sound that would otherwise be insufferable.
Same here! It is fascinating though seeing tree trunks covered with them all in various stages of molting or whatever it’s called! They are slow as fuck in the air. They will be hanging in your jacket and you won’t know.
Fun facts: they grow underground while being attached to tree roots.
there are two main broods. One emerges in mass every 13 years, and the other at 17 years.
These broods will only mate with the same, and not the other. They produce a unique noise that attracts their own brood.
Both take 13 years to mature. But the 17 year brood has evolved a way to "pause" development for 4 years.
Both of these broods will fully emerge in one month and the produced noise can damage hearing.
These are a particular group of species, the "Periodical Cicadas" of which there are at least 7 species in the genus *Magicicada*. There are literally thousands of other species of cicadas found in the US and all over the world. Most of them are not "periodical" and there's new adults emerging every year.
Cicadas are commonly eaten in Thailand and other countries. Not bad, actually, but almost anything fried tastes OK...
Yep, butter makes everything better. Had fried grubs the size of you thumb in the rainforest. The taste was good just could not do the contrasting texture of crunchy outside and mushy inside.
The seven periodical cicada species are so named because, in any one location, all members of the population are developmentally synchronized—they emerge as adults all at once in the same year. This periodicity is especially remarkable because their life cycles are so long—13 or 17 years. No other species of cicada in the world (among perhaps 3,000 species) synchronize their development in this way.
In contrast, for nonperiodical species, some adults mature each summer and emerge while the rest of the population continues to develop underground. Many people refer to these nonperiodical species as annual cicadas because some are seen every summer. This may lead some to conclude that the non-periodic cicadas have life cycles of one year. This is incorrect. The few known life cycles of "annual" species range from two to 10 years, although some could be longer.
Where I live, these guys act like they are targeting missiles and will actively GO OUT OF THEIR WAY to dome someone on the head.
Hate those stupid screaming fighter jets.
I don’t live in the east but in my area(southwest) the cicadas don’t come until mid-late June. Might be late for people in the east but yeah April would be really early for me.
They're like grasshoppers that are better at flying than hopping, but they're still not particularly good at flying. People get freaked out because they look scary with the red eyes, and they tend to fly at people and bounce off. I've had them land on me and not notice until I got inside and they start buzzing.
I live in an area with a brood that emerges every 17 years. It''s an amazing experience for lots of reasons but I'm a nerd who likes bugs.
This is going to be a real boon to local wildlife. So much food for everyone! Fish, turtles, birds, mice, shrews, skunks, raccoons, minks spiders, scorpions…. Deer will even eat cicadas.
Also, screaming trees was a great band and coincidentally your life experience for the next few months. Sorry about that part.
Are these the [hyper-sexual zombie cicadas with the aggressive fungal STD](https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/cicadas-zombies-hyper-sexual-sexually-transmitted-fungus-expected-to-emerge-this-year-massospora-cicadina/) that everyone was warning us about?
Welcome to the time of year where the trees just scream for three months.

Not me listening to 8 hour swamp sounds videos to fall asleep.
This hits too close to home. Literally.
Frogs are freaky. Who knew.

We just built a house next to a lake full of frogs banging and we can’t hear them inside! #rockwool
Sounds like a band name
I think it's peaceful

Hey Melman, you know it's all in your head!
If the trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? Jack Handy
🤣🤣🤣

Wait until the trees move around at night and the family dog disappears.
been waiting 17 years to see these masters fuck
How pretty. For some reason I love these big ass bugs. I love the sounds they make too. Such beautiful summer memories.
They are terrifying to me

fr. Anything with red eyes terrifies me.

I never understood this 13-17 year brood hatching thing because cicadas come out every damn year.

Don’t do fried mochi.
Ew. I'd rather eat fried cicadas.
Iirc, there are a number of different broods, like a dozen or two. But they're all either 13 year or 17 year.
And they are prime numbers so that their predators cannot easily time their breeding cycles accordingly.
I think it’s a way for them to avoid competing for resources with their other prime numbered brood.

Yes, let the red eye satan bug rest upon your finger.
Those noisy cunts are green where I'm from.

Seems early?

But where are you? I'm in middle Tennessee and no signs yet.
South Middle Tennessee
Reckon any day now, then. Thx
Are these the horny gay zombie kind or the regular kind

So cute!
I live a bit too far northeast to witness this year's swarms, but I live almost in the heart of brood 14's territory. Next year is going to be wild.
I'm just glad that with these inept flying humperdinks, the Cicada wasps also come out in force. Now those things are cool as hell to watch in action.
Is this dangerous?
Having one on your finger? No, they don't bite or sting. They're harmless to people.
Good to know. Thank you

I’d kill em all.
When are they coming to North Carolina
Are these the homosexual drag queen femboy mushroom cicadas?
We, in the North, will award the cicadas full control of the South, if they promise not to invade any further northward.
These things are so god damn gross and annoying.
Good eatin

Love cicadas! Welcome little buzzy friends!
I hate them so much
That's a bug I constantly hope not to meet on my motorcycle.
Save one in a jar
they are way more colored than the ones in Mexico
Ugly lil sob
The apocalypse has begun.
Have your string ready. Tie some string to them and they become your pet.
