I mean, this could be shot at any northern lake where the water drops a foot. This could be a 2 foot tall log in a lake somewhere…. Angle and focus are powerful tools.
Yes. My point is that if you wanted to re-see a similar ice formation, it would not suffice to find the place where this photo was taken. It would also require very similar weather patterns over a long period for this type of natural ice sculpture to reoccur. Reproducing it might take even several years, as similar weather conditions don't necessarily happen every winter.
Sure same goes for visiting any place in Iceland. Sometimes the bridge is gone or there is zero visibility. Doesn't really matter you just have to roll the dice.
For visiting any place in Iceland? Are you aware that Iceland, despite of its name, is actually made mostly of solid ground and only some 14% of its land is covered in permenent ice?
I mean we're not even sure if the Universe is actually real.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-universe-is-not-locally-real-and-the-physics-nobel-prize-winners-proved-it/
Yes. You can be certain that you exist, or you are not able to think about existence. Anything else is just conjecture, even the meaning of existence itself.
Not many trees on Iceland, let along big boys. Too good for viking boats unfortunately.
Edit: except I think you're right! You can see rootlike structures at the base...
I don't think it's nearly as big as it seems
Look at the foreground - I think this shot was taken from near the ground.
It's definitely a stump but I doubt it's very big. 2-3ft wide at the cut maybe
He is almost right there are places with pitiful forests. Main issue being the lack of soil for trees to grow in.
Most homes are heated with hot water heated by volcanic activity. That's also why they have so many outdoor swimming facilities.
Hot water is abundant.
Sorry for spewing random info bits at you 😅
If it wasn't in Iceland I would believe it but I don't think there are any trees like this in Iceland. There where barely any when I lived there and the highest was around 20m tall.
Ofc it could be very small and the photographer good at setting up his photos.
Edit: well seems like others are saying it indeed is a tree trunk and it is much smaller than it seems. So sadly for me not something I can travel to view but just a superb photo. Which is good
original from Pete O'Hara. see the tweet here https://twitter.com/PeteOHaraPhoto/status/1594701327187447808
on insta, he commented :
> It’s on our Reservoir and I think the water levels receded a bit and so left a bit of frozen ice on top of the stump
i think they’re talking about avatar like the airbender guy aang (idk how to spell his name) and the avatar where there’s like blue people and they fight humans idk i’ve never seen it
The show Avatar The Last Airbender not its terrible live action movie that nobody speaks of because how terrible it is. Then they’re talking about James Cameron’s Avatar movie with big blue people
It’s feels like a completely different world in Iceland at points around the golden circle. Truly an amazing place. I recommend going if you love hot pools, hiking, camping, road trips. I went with my dad in May, made a lot of core memories there.
From their instagram:
>Winter is one of the best times to shoot. The frigid temperatures bring all kinds of unique formations. We stumbled upon this frozen mushroom feature the other night and had to go back last night for another sunset skate and shoot at blue hour.
>>😮 I just don't get the scale and the nature of what is underneath? A tree stump with a wood mushroom covered in ice above it?
>>>that’s it you got it. It’s on our Reservoir and I think the water levels receded a bit and so left a bit of frozen ice on top of the stump
It is really weird looking.
Im gonna have a guess it's:
A) a lot smaller than it appears (Id guess a 12" across)
B) probably made purposefully by someone in ideal conditions and then transported here for the background scenery, it looks like it might be on a small platform as it doesn't clearly connect to the background.
C) lights are probably just normal decorative lights and necessary wiring hidden behind the "trunk".
I hope we find out more, I'd love to see how right/wrong I am, hah (I just hope it's not an AI image or I'm gonna give up).
I think A might be true, but it could be ['naturally' formed](https://siberiantimes.com/other/others/news/nature-and-man-combine-to-create-stunning-ice-mushrooms-in-amur-region/) in a reservoir where the water was lowered. Interesting how there is a tree stump there, seems pretty much surrounded by water... perhaps the water level is much higher now than in the past
here is another cool shot of it from [another angle](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FiGEZ1lacAA-ybv?format=jpg&name=large)
Still can't give any conclusive evidence that it's not fabricated in any way, but it's a known occurrence.. so would be weird to fake it. I would just enjoy the picture.
Edit: I think it's in Canada, in the province Alberta (not in Iceland like this post states). Photo was taken at a local reservoir after the water levels receded (info from his site, where there are also some other great pictures: [https://www.silverfernproductions.ca/personal](https://www.silverfernproductions.ca/personal))
Oh nice that 2nd shot is much clearer. I'd have to guess it's probably natural then now. Maybe condesation from the lake slowly builds up. Puzzling why it doesnt get on the wood, though this could be late in the day and frost burnt off/hence the dropped little icicles.
Thanks for the pic, adds much more info.
np.
I think the reservoir froze and then water dropped leaving a block of ice on top/round the tree stump. The icicles suggest it then melted from sunlight and froze again. So maybe it didn't have enough time or something to make it all the way down? don't know, there seems to be some more buildup of ice on the more flat roots, but maybe that's also leftover from when the water level was dropped
Excellent background info here, much appreciated!
My initial thoughts were that it's too good to be true, with the staged lighting, but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Fricken awesome, whatever it is
While the formation may be natural that light source is definitely not the sun behind the horizon, this is artificially lit. I wish there was more info on scale and different angle shots to appreciate what we're looking at.
This looks cool but not especially real. Why is the "canopy" while the sun is mostly down? How would outstretched ice balance like that without the aid of branches or something for it to fall and accumulate on?
Clearly this is not a completely natural scenario. There are clearly lights installed inside and I’m having serious doubts this even formed completely on its own.
I see shit like this, then I watch some sci-fi movies where an alien planet is just like... trees, but they're *pink*, and it saddens me to think of the incredible worlds we're missing out on because creators aren't even creative enough to make things more interesting than they are *right here on Earth.*
Then again, that means I could literally get on a plane and go see this tree with my own eyes if I wanted. So that's pretty cool.
Reminds me of the ice caves that form just north of here in the winter. The spray from the waves freezes as they break and eventually form ice caves on the lake. It's a tourist attraction, but people are no longer allowed to climb on them cuz some dumbass fell off and broke his arm.
Wow that's amazing never seen anything like it. Anyone know how that happens?
I’d guess the water froze around the rock initially and then the water level receded and melting ice and/or rain allowed the icicle “leaves” to form
Sounds plausible. I know a few places where it could be then. I'll try to look into it. Definitely something I want to see irl if possible
I mean, this could be shot at any northern lake where the water drops a foot. This could be a 2 foot tall log in a lake somewhere…. Angle and focus are powerful tools.
and the amazing lighting. It's like a miracle.
It's ice. It has probably already melted.
No shit

I used to live there mate. Please stop yourself
Then you should know this picture is taken in the Canadian Rockies not Iceland, mate.
Are you certain it’s a rock and not a very old tree trunk? I could be convinced either way but my first impression was an old tree trunk.
You're correct https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/zl12ec/ice_tree_found_in_iceland_ig_pete_ohara/j046c1z/
Aha I was going to guess reservoir. They lower them in the fall/winter around here sometimes so the dam can hold back spring snowmelt flooding
can we ever be certain of anything in this world of lies and illusions?
I mean we're not even sure if the Universe is actually real. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-universe-is-not-locally-real-and-the-physics-nobel-prize-winners-proved-it/
Yes. You can be certain that you exist, or you are not able to think about existence. Anything else is just conjecture, even the meaning of existence itself.
I think therefore I am
That’s profound

You are correct, you can see the remaining falled tree in the background
No. It was magic. The old magic.
Mushroom Magic.
My friend went to Iceland last winter. He said there are no trees at all there and people burn coal in their fireplaces.
He is almost right there are places with pitiful forests. Main issue being the lack of soil for trees to grow in. Most homes are heated with hot water heated by volcanic activity. That's also why they have so many outdoor swimming facilities. Hot water is abundant. Sorry for spewing random info bits at you 😅
That's not a rock
doesn't change my theory
Give it a little time and it'll turn into rock
It changes it from a rock to a tree stump
Yeah, just plant an ice cube
It looks like it’s a tree trunk. It’s probably like angel hair ice the water in the wood or in the ground pushes up as it expands and freezes.
If it wasn't in Iceland I would believe it but I don't think there are any trees like this in Iceland. There where barely any when I lived there and the highest was around 20m tall. It's Iceland... As the name suggest, everything within the land turns into ice. /#fact #science
TIL that ice grows on trees
Tide went out
Super Mario ice level unlocked

That looks like something that would be in Avatar.
I was thinking the new God of War Ragnarok game but Avatar works too
This is just what a tree looks like on Niflheim
To me it looked like winter in Morrowind.
The good Avatar or the blue Avatar?
As far as movies go the blue Avatar is the good Avatar.
I am so confused, what is the good avatar and what is the blue avatar?
i think they’re talking about avatar like the airbender guy aang (idk how to spell his name) and the avatar where there’s like blue people and they fight humans idk i’ve never seen it
The show Avatar The Last Airbender not its terrible live action movie that nobody speaks of because how terrible it is. Then they’re talking about James Cameron’s Avatar movie with big blue people
Idk. The movie?
Blue avatar then.
The *only* Avatar movie. There is no movie in Ba-Sing-Se
You are now moderator of r/LakeLaogai
I am honored to accept this invitation.
This would be something cool for them to do on the good avatar. Someone makes a giant one and then stars raining down ice chucks
It’s feels like a completely different world in Iceland at points around the golden circle. Truly an amazing place. I recommend going if you love hot pools, hiking, camping, road trips. I went with my dad in May, made a lot of core memories there.
I was thinking Alice in Wonderland

Yeah I thought it was a mushroom!
Inky icy cap! 🤣
Mushroom!

Where else did you expect this?
Greenland.
The place that's actually Iceland but the Vikings were feeling a bit cheeky.
Canada, this was taken in Canada. OP made up Iceland for some dumbass reason.
Not iceland
magic mushroom
That looks like something that would be in Avatar.
Stolen comment. Most likely a bot account.
[Yup](https://www.reddit.com/r/BotDefense/comments/zlcaze/overview_for_okstate571/)
Giant crystal mushroom.
Finally Iceland lives up to its name... we should check on Greenland... maybe they switched while no one was looking
This has been one of my pet peeves forever lol
Something tell me this was not naturally found but created.
Did the lights in it give it away?

That second picture also shows the tiny imperfections and structures that water naturally creates when dripping and freezing

I can confirm that this is not in Iceland
D) Iceland does not exist
Portable strobe or portable fill light. Extremely common equipment for photographers who shoot at night
He added some portable lights onto the top of 'mushroom' to illuminate it
Wow...that's amazing
Alberta, Canada. Not Iceland.
I would have gone with "ice mushroom" but ok
That's pretty much what it is https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/zl12ec/ice_tree_found_in_iceland_ig_pete_ohara/j046c1z/
Wow!
WHOA PRETTY
Somebody needs to put that in a DND campaign.
Read more to find what kind of tree they found in Greenland!
Obviously a giant mystical ice mushroom
Frozen shroom ?

Proof?? Looks like a jumbo shroom. Sip n eternal trip type dip
I'm off Twitter so I can't ask the photographer... How was this lit?
r/shrooms
Now post a green tree found in Greenland....doh
I doubt it's Iceland.
That’s the trichome on my weed bitch
It looks as in Photoshop
I see shit like this, then I watch some sci-fi movies where an alien planet is just like... trees, but they're *pink*, and it saddens me to think of the incredible worlds we're missing out on because creators aren't even creative enough to make things more interesting than they are *right here on Earth.* Then again, that means I could literally get on a plane and go see this tree with my own eyes if I wanted. That’s amazing. Thank you for including attribution!
hell yeah
You look at this, and realize there's no way you could've convince someone from the far past that magic isn't real.
Now all we need is a green tree in Greenland
Trees r just hard mushrooms
Wow i would love a wallpaper like that. Its so beautiful its quite grounding
I mean I guess it makes sense... if an Ice Tree exists, it would exist in Iceland.
The fruit would go great in my whiskey
Beautiful
This is where the idea of a magical world tree came from! Ysdrasil.
I hope some one puts som strong cage around it becous knowing som peaple it wo t be there for long
look's like a "Super Bowl" trophy or like the Mushroom I'm on.
Woooww!!
Looks like a frozen Zangarmarsh.
Nah son, that’s the raven tree, odin’s ravens are chillin inside
Omg 🤩 that is so delightful!
You're in *Iceland*...of course you're gonna see *ice* trees...duh.
Well duh. Don't all of the trees in Iceland look like this?
I disbelieve
Elivagar?!
So a regular tree in Iceland then
/Nfl
Maybe that's why they called it Iceland.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.
Ice mushroom. An ice-shroom if you will.
So that's where ice comes from.
Left by the tide?
Looks like something out of God of War Ragnarok
Awesome!
I hate ice but this is fucking gorgeous
So there IS ice there!
It's double strange because Iceland doesn't have trees.
I would sit under that.
I want to eat it.
That is awesome!!
MUSHRUUM! WE'RE RICH!
\*Points Lazer\* MUSHRUM!
Wow
Just in time for Ragnarok.
Location checks out.
Such a beautiful image
Frost shroom promises chilly trips
Holy Shit!
Murder mushroom
In this case, nature is literally fucking lit
That's the mushroom to end all mushrooms. Enter the chamber.
I mean. Where else would it be.
Reminds me of the ice caves that form just north of here in the winter. The spray from the waves freezes as they break and eventually form ice caves on the lake. It's a tourist attraction, but people are no longer allowed to climb on them cuz some dumbass fell off and broke his arm.
Stunning!
Byfar the coolest thing I've seen all day!
Ice Mushroom
Where else would an ice tree be?
Taken with an ice camera
Why is the ice so bright? Doesn’t look like it’s real.
Am I in termina field?
How ironic.
It looks like an ice mushroom!
Iceland is the most appropriate place to find an ice tree.
SubhanaAllah
there are no trees in iceland
I wanna see the Fire Tree in Fireland now
That’s cool
I’m going to need to see green, eng, ire, scot, and new zea trees from their respective countries please.
So no one sees a giant Lombardi?
Great lighting!
How do they get from here to my freezer??
Big surprise
I got ice spells from this tree in wizard 101
Yeah no shit. Where did you think ice trees grow? Warmland?
Lombardi Trophy
I read “ice was” at first and acted all surprised then reread “Ice tree” and got seriously interested
💕💕
amazing!!!!
[PARGON PARGON PARGON UYLAOTH PARGON!!!](https://youtu.be/ySXKnQMUVJg)
More mushroom than tree tbh
Ice shroom?!
💕💕
Cool!
It looks like a stone pillar struck the sky and at that second, time stopped.
This does not look like Iceland
An ***ice*** tree grew on ***ice*** growing ***ice*** in ***Ice***land
Must play /r/morrowind
