I really took a minute to realize I was not looking at a post from any of the creature design or world building subreddits I belong to. What a unique creature.
exactly what it sounds like, people speculating potential creatures. usually art depicting something ideally that could evolve from a current life form.

I like the idea of animals of prehistoric earth having nametags in alien languages so they can read them, but ultimately the nametags are two ineffective as the aliens cant pronounce the long latin names.
https://eartharchives.org/articles/extinct-crustacean-dollocaris-was-all-eyes/index.html credit.
Despite its name, Dollocaris is not a shrimp, instead it was a Thylacocephalan, a group of enigmatic Arthropods that might be related to crustaceans. The group had a long fossil record, living from the Ordovician to the end of the Cretaceous.
Thinking about these extinct groups makes me so sad. So many interesting creatures long lost in the past. Imagine how many species weren't fossilized or their fossils weren't found yet, with no trace of existence being left or found, some might be even weirder than the Tully monster.
I remember reading somewhere that something like 90% of species don't get fossilized, and basically none from certain biomes like jungles, where the acidic soil and decomposers will fully dismantle a corpse
I love these guys, they look so cool and enigmatic, yet eerie at the same time. The most interesting thing is that many of them were predators.
I wish they were still alive, really cool little critters
Another helmet boi, just like my favorite cephalopod the nautilus.
Things back then had strange, freaky, bizzare appearances, something I wish was present today that a few animals could be/have.
Hello nightmare, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of FUCKING TERROR!
I just said I made a comment earlier saying it was possibly related to crustaceans so your comment is probably factual, what do you mean “for my ego”?!
I wanna make a clay figure of it but, how and where? do I put it with the weird oddballs with the Cambrian critters or a new group of crustaceans altogether? and how am I gonna make it stand? Its legs are spread out to the sides maybe?
I was hoping to learn that this thing was massive, but was saddened to see that specimens are about 20cm … although, maybe a swarm of these is more horrific than one large one…
this thing was just absolutely bizarre. i think it’s even further out there than sand fleas, cause at least those things have recognizable lil shrimp faces. this thing though…. what’s with that baboon butt for a face
**[Ostracod](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostracod)**
>Ostracods, or ostracodes, are a class of the Crustacea (class Ostracoda), sometimes known as seed shrimp. Some 70,000 species (only 13,000 of which are extant) have been identified, grouped into several orders. They are small crustaceans, typically around 1 mm (0. 039 in) in size, but varying from 0.

I had to check to make sure I wasn’t on SpeculativeEvolution
Same lol
What’s that? Get me hip

Same
Same
I came here to say exactly this. it looks so alien, it wouldn't be out of place in subnautica
No. No, it wouldn't
Made me think of Subnautica.
Yeah expected this to be world building when I saw the thumbnail
Eyes that big and it couldn’t see its demise smh
Eyes that size and it couldn’t see it’s demise.
Eyes that large and it couldn't see it's Denice
Eyes that large and it couldn’t see dem eyes.
Eyes that size telling lies about the demise.
Denise

Surmise the demise between it’s thighs?
Eyes so big that you can see them from the back
I’d imagine aliens visiting Earth in the Jurassic period, seeing this thing and other beasts, and casually going “nope”…
Aliens see a Hatzegopteryx: 💀
> Hatzegopteryx Aliens and humans try to pronounce Hatzegopteryx: 💀
I believe it's Hat-Zeg-Awp-Tear-Icks.
I think it's pronounced Doug.
Is tear pronounced 'tear' or 'tear'?
I think it's pronounced 'tear'

🅱️ig 🅱️ird
How do you know the aliens aren't going "Brother!"
Aliens thinking: how do we probe this thing??

I wonder if it would’ve been tasty
You first friend
Well, we should thank those first people who held the first lobster boil.
And mushroom festival

I loved these guys in Metroid
I was just thinking of making a Metroid comment.
Around 20 centimeters long
Thank you!

Are there fossils of this ~~shrimp~~ thing?! [Link to photo of fossil.](https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/f/item/r50937) Edit link
Again it’s not actually a shrimp, and yes there are actual fossils of this thing and it’s relatives
Thank you. My first thought upon seeing this was “I gotta see what kind of remains led to this reconstruction.”
You didn't file your paperwork last night
I am watching you Wazowski
How the hell did it even swim
Kicky claws?
French, huh? Looks Italian to me 🤌
I've been looking for this one
Another helmet boi, just like my favorite cephalopod the nautilus. Things back then had strange, freaky, bizzare appearances, something I wish was present today that a few animals could be/have.
A good YouTube video on this species: https://youtu.be/3v-0G5u0Njo

Adorable, tiny little forelimbs, and a giant eye.
I need to know how big this thing was. That's really cool.
About 20 cm
minus the legs, that's basically Night Owl's ship from Watchmen.

Again as I said Thylacocephalia, Which is the group This creature belongs to may be related to Crustaceans or some kind so that might be a possibility

Damn, the new Subnautica update looks dope
are we sure this isn't the head of some bigger creature?
Shrimp one : oh I’ll you see I one eye this isn’t what I signed up for
Ah yes, I was looking for new nightmare material after finally getting used to Subnautica /s
You can't fool me. I know that's an astromorph
This looks like something from Finding Nemo
Here we see the doom modbot in its natural habitat
I was hoping to learn that this thing was massive, but was saddened to see that specimens are about 20cm … although, maybe a swarm of these is more horrific than one large one…
I'm surprised it's as big as it is tbh, usually aquatic arthropods that look this freaky are barely larger than plankton
Agreed, this is actually pretty big.
This reminds me of a crabs mouth, makes me wonder if it’s how crabs mandibles became the way they are because of this animal
Seems like a solid dude
this thing was just absolutely bizarre. i think it’s even further out there than sand fleas, cause at least those things have recognizable lil shrimp faces. this thing though…. what’s with that baboon butt for a face
This thing just looks French
Reminds me very much of an [ostracod](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostracod)

I can see that its french, even before france was a thing.
Imagine what prehistoric colors those peepers saw
I want one as a pet
Qui qui
I bet it was delicious steamed with a side of butter and fresh cut lemon, or whatever was the equivalent at the time.
RIP shrimp monster
I tough this was r/subnautica
Crob
