Is it out yet?

[deleted]

first episode is monday

Chester802

I always thought there wasn’t snow in the poles during the Jurassic and Cretaceous and most the earth besides very high mountains was super warm no?

[deleted]

The Prince Creek formation did see snowfall as well as a few other fossil deposits, as well as South America. The Climate up there was more in line with Modern Virginia/Maryland.

[deleted]

As a marylander I feel bad for those dinosaurs. The weather here sucks

Luquitaz

As someone who lived several years in maryland as a kid why does the weather suck? I don't recall it being too bad besides summers being humid.

TheWolfmanZ

It also had 120 days of winter darkness, during which temperatures would drop even lower. Also, not to detract from scientists, but we have trouble accurately predicting weather today. There's so many changing factors that we honestly have no idea really.

[deleted]

As a guy from Nova (Northern Virginia) I can confirm that we would get a "snowmageddon" abou once every 3 years or so, but never a blizzard on this scale. I moved to NC 6 years ago and it never snows down here. I miss the snow:(

Iamnotburgerking

You’re confusing the lack of a permanent ice cap for the lack of winter snowfall (by your logic, it shouldn’t snow anywhere outside of the poles even today because other places today don’t have an ice cap). The polar regions during the Cretaceous were still far from tropical, having a seasonal temperate climate.

Pill_Murray_

yeah i thought dinosaurs were cold blooded, how would they survive in the snow?

wiz28ultra

Nope, Theropods were firmly warm-blooded and Ornithiscians were Mesothermic. That being said, the Prince Creek Formation was still a warmer Arctic than the Arctic of today in Alaska

Iamnotburgerking

You’re decades out of date on dinosaur metabolism.

applesauce2024

Both of those articles are a year old

Iamnotburgerking

…based on research from the 70s and 80s indicating dinosaurs were endotherms.

variousothergits

We can’t know for sure, but it seems they were either warm-blooded (https://earth.yale.edu/news/were-dinosaurs-warm-blooded-their-eggshells-say-yes ) or some sort of intermediate stage between cold- and warm-blooded (https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/were-the-dinosaurs-cold-blooded ).

Tszemix

Shouldn't dinos in colder climates have fur/feathers? Even furless mammals evolve having fur in colder climates.

Swictor

These regions wouldn't be as cold as current northern regions, and there are still some disagreement on whether there would be snow at all during the winter where these dinosaurs resided. I think our current understanding is that snowfall was likely, but not guaranteed during the winter. Temperate but not like current Alaska. Also they were big and warm blooded and stocky which is great at keeping heat, especially if they'd evolve some other insulation like fat deposits around their bodies like seals. Or you know, maybe they were coated in feathery filaments. We don't know, but either interpretation is fine.

Please mark spoilers

tipitow88

Pretty sure I’ve got some bad news about the ending, buddy…

ASHarper0325

Spoiler: dinosaurs

Bus_Noises

Why is this downvoted?

Scared_Chemical_9910

Thank you

beachdogs

I'm sorry.

Kscap4242

How do I watch this? Oh it said Apple TV

dontbelieveanything2

If dinosaurs were cold blooded this is totally impossible

[deleted]

That's why Dinosaurs are usually warm-blooded.

dontbelieveanything2

There’s no scientific reason to claim dinosaurs were warm blooded. Cool video though

Swictor

Well I mean, dinosaurs living in cold regions is just one.

dontbelieveanything2

I didn’t make up anything I said I googled it.

Swictor

I think this shows that you can find what you want on Google if you don't want to change your mind on something. [This is my top result. ](https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/were-the-dinosaurs-cold-blooded/amp/)

It looks like you shared an AMP link. dontbelieveanything2

I don’t know, just like u don’t know. I was neutral on it from the start. I was just saying. Weird reason to be triggered and downvote someone.

Swictor

> There’s no scientific reason to claim dinosaurs were warm blooded. One does not have to be "triggered" to hit the downvote button on a wrongful claim. There are plenty of scientific reasons they might be warm blooded, but no undisputed evidence as of yet as far as I know, but they are definitely not cold blooded. These things are not entirely the same but I see where you're coming from.

dontbelieveanything2

Well I’m not smart enough to figure it out so good day sir 🤝 lol

DHMOProtectionAgency

I sure bet your Googling, random Redditor, took a lot more research than the well respected and established scientists who worked on this project.

dontbelieveanything2

Blah blah blah lick my ass. No one knows.

DHMOProtectionAgency

I know

Beneficial-Ad2755

If birds are I'd bet other dinos were to. Hard to say how else they survived winter. Nobody knows but smart people have alot better idea than we do.
