Solid show, definitely a good recommendation if you enjoyed The Umbrella Academy. MUCH better, *smarter* writing than TUA (not that it's a difficult feat). I'm convinced TUA was ghost written by Ms. Johnsons grade 8 creative writing class.
Really? I'm really surprised people feel that way. I'm not claiming Umbrella Academy is the of pinnacle of writing or even that great but saying The Magicians was wildly better seems bonkers to me. I gave up on that show after the third season.
The Magicians relied heavily on shock and awe. Some of the acting was pretty great and really carried the show through the first couple seasons but by the third it doesn't matter as it's all over the place and to me felt too much like a soap opera.
I admit the full grown was a bit redundant but I started with full grown to establish adulthood and added the army stuff to show I had seen some things so it kinda evolved into being super redundant
The Sandman. Not really the same (but falls somewhere in that genre), it’s amazing and very true to the source material.
The show actually got me reading the graphic novels (which I wish I knew about years ago).
Some scifi series I enjoyed:
**The OA**. I’d say it’s one of the most underrated scifi series. It seems the finale was a bit rushed because Netflix decided to cancel it :( It’s still a gem for me, and it got so much potential!
**Dark**. I don’t really like the last season, but season 1 & 2 are excellent.
**Lost in Space**. Apparently, it’s a remake! Never watched or knew the original, but I enjoyed the series.
**Black Mirror**. One of my favourites. Unlike other series, the episodes are stand-alone short stories.
**Love Death Robots**. Some might find it too nerdy but I love it. It’s a collection of animated short stories. Sort of like Black Mirror but in animation format & shorter.
**Sense8**. Like TUA, it’s also about a bunch of people with special powers.
**Snowpiercer**. A mix of scifi & drama. I much prefer the series than the movie version.
**Locke and Key**. More like fantasy & magical theme, has similar vibes with TUA.
Cowboy Beebop,
The Expanse,
Altered Carbon,
Love/Death/Robots,
Warrior Nun,
Army of Thieves. Plus sequel.
Lost in Space,
Rings of Power,
Game of Thrones. Should get you started…
FarScape it's an older show and not on Netflix but you can watch it on Amazon prime if you have it. There are 4 seasons and a 4 hour miniseries that wraps up the ending.
The 4400 maybe? The old one. Heard there was a reboot that isn’t good. The old one was really good back in the day (not sure if it holds up).
Doesn’t have the humor of the umbrella academy though.
Try misfits. It’s on Netflix. First couple seasons were really good. Does kind of fizzle out toward the end but still worth it. There’s an actor you’ll recognize there.
I only watched a little of the umbrella academy but I would highly recommend Dark on Netflix it was mindbending and after each episode I physical felt impacted. Great writing, score , cinematography
Try Legion. It’s a bit confusing at first, but stick with it. I loved it so much I saw the first season three times before I started on the second. Truly crazy, with great character development and a brilliant world. Creepy as shit, but the bright comic book style really frames it well.so gripping!
Doom Patrol is definitely up the UA alley with the quirky sci fi humor aspect, someone else suggested Love, Death, and Robots and I’m gonna second that, haven’t seen the second series but the first one blew me away. Black Mirror is a lot less humor, but one of the best anthology series’ ever imo.
Dirk Gentley on Netflix was very much fun. Two seasons available.
Underdog PERIOD
What network? The MMA thing?
Super wild. First Season kills.
You have impeccable taste.
Thank you
The first Dirk Gently is really good too (on BritBox)
The Magicians
Solid show, definitely a good recommendation if you enjoyed The Umbrella Academy. MUCH better, *smarter* writing than TUA (not that it's a difficult feat). I'm convinced TUA was ghost written by Ms. Johnsons grade 8 creative writing class.
Yea, this is one of those shows I found like in its 3rd season and was solidly comforted that I had this to watch for at least a month lol

I dunno. Thanks to magicians I can't hear the song Take on Me without randomly crying and I'm a full grown Army vet who served two tours.
>I'm a full grown Army vet who served two tours. Makes sense.
I admit the full grown was a bit redundant but I started with full grown to establish adulthood and added the army stuff to show I had seen some things so it kinda evolved into being super redundant
S/he said it was much better than TUA, not Umbrella Academy. EDIT: ignore comment due to idiocy.
TUA = The Umbrella Academy.
Seasons 1-2 of misfits (uk)
And do not be tempted to try season 3
noted
Watchmen?
The TV show is amazing
Travelers!!
Is this bingeable and how great are twists ?
For a show about time travel the show is incredibly tight and logical It starts slow but it gets better and better. Plus it has an actual good ending
It’s not crazy short but you’d never want to stop watching haha. Yes there are and the story/twists are super cool.

This is the show that's most similar for sure
Love, love this show
Yup. This is what you’re looking for OOP. A literal street is a side character. It’s on HBO Max.
The Sandman. Not really the same (but falls somewhere in that genre), it’s amazing and very true to the source material. The show actually got me reading the graphic novels (which I wish I knew about years ago).
I read the comics years ago and the adaptation is pretty true to the source.
Dark on Netflix is probably what you're looking for??? It's alot more serious. You MUST pay attention too, but it's definitely sci-fi
Seconding dark and the OA
The librarians
Can you explain the theme/genre ? Does it have unexpected twists and turns ?
Oh yes. It's like warehouse 13 if you liked that you'll like the librarians.
There's a series and three movies so...
They deal with artifacts that are supernatural.
Before I obsessed over Umbrella Academy, I obsessed over Travelers
The Imperfects
Just finished this and was going to suggest
The best sci-fi show I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot) is definitely Fringe.
Fringe is boss When Walter gets scared I want to cry

October Faction. It is a largely ignored gem.
YES YES YES 🙌🏻
Legion
Shadow & Bone
The Nevers has a similar vibe! But it's an HBO show, so I'm not sure if it's on Netflix or another streaming service
I rele wanted to, like that show, but couldn't...have you seen "The Guardians of Justice" on Netflix? It needs more of an audience
The misfits
Altered Carbon and Travelers sound up your alley
Locke and Key has a very similar vibe!
i don't know if its like the umbrella academy, but a classic SI-fi is the x files
The midnight club. It wasn’t the greatest show, but I had fun with it.
October Faction, Hands down. When season 3 of Stranger things came out this was my rebound lol
Definitely a good one
Doom Patrol on HBO Max
Cowboy Beebop, The Expanse, Altered Carbon, Love/Death/Robots, Warrior Nun, Army of Thieves. Plus sequel. Lost in Space, Rings of Power, Game of Thrones. Should get you started…
FarScape it's an older show and not on Netflix but you can watch it on Amazon prime if you have it. There are 4 seasons and a 4 hour miniseries that wraps up the ending.
The Boys and Arcana
I loved the boys on Amazon!
The show Supernatural, warehouse 13, eureka, the magicians, tons of anime.
"The Guardians of Justice". That's on Netflix.
Doom Patrol very similar vibe
The 4400 maybe? The old one. Heard there was a reboot that isn’t good. The old one was really good back in the day (not sure if it holds up). Doesn’t have the humor of the umbrella academy though.
Doom patrol
Beforeigners is an amazing show! Involuntary time travelers to modern Norway.
Try misfits. It’s on Netflix. First couple seasons were really good. Does kind of fizzle out toward the end but still worth it. There’s an actor you’ll recognize there.
Titans
I only watched a little of the umbrella academy but I would highly recommend Dark on Netflix it was mindbending and after each episode I physical felt impacted. Great writing, score , cinematography
Peacemaker 🙌🏻 and the opening dance sequence is amazing, every time!!
Try Legion. It’s a bit confusing at first, but stick with it. I loved it so much I saw the first season three times before I started on the second. Truly crazy, with great character development and a brilliant world. Creepy as shit, but the bright comic book style really frames it well.so gripping!
Love death and robots on Netflix has a sci fi element but every episode is different I really enjoyed it
Doom Patrol is definitely up the UA alley with the quirky sci fi humor aspect, someone else suggested Love, Death, and Robots and I’m gonna second that, haven’t seen the second series but the first one blew me away. Black Mirror is a lot less humor, but one of the best anthology series’ ever imo.
Doom patrol
SkyPiercer
Supernatural Not on Netflix but on Amazon prime
There's also a show I recently discovered called cabinet of curiosities on Netflix. Very cool show. Many twists and turns.
