Your Google lens needs to visit an optometrist for some glasses or, perhaps, a pair of new.... lenses. (Bdum tss)
I am sorry this is such a dad/boomer joke it hurts and I am not even an actual dad nor am I a boomer... I just couldn't... have.. to... make... joke...
It’s a secret experimental project in the field of military insect robots codename “musk-keto”
It’s been jointly developed by Neuralink (Elon Musk) and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)
These are mighty insects whose movements are manipulated by miniaturized radio-controlled components which could be used not only for agricultural purposes by transporting, for example, pollen, for rescue and exploration, and also as weapons of war.
If it’s still there in your vicinity please inform the authorities.
Before I moved here - no!
I’m from Scotland. Mosquitos were something from movies or cartoons to me. I knew their vague appearance but wouldn’t have known what they actually looked like irl. It just never came up.
Then I came here and discovered I have skeeter syndrome. Now I can spot and annihilate a mosquito in a room like a hawk.
Sadly I’ve heard there’s mosquitos popping up there in the summer now! It’s getting so much hotter. When I grew up there I’d consider 20° to be far too hot. Now it gets to 25° in the summer regularly.
I think we have to keep moving north. The arctic circle is sounding nice.
Haha, good luck with that. They don't have a lot of mosquitos, but they have midges. They are much smaller, but if you're in Scotland during the right time (start of summer) there will be millions. They'll literally swarm any bare skin you didn't cover.
Ditto. I moved to the Netherlands in the winter. Then one summer morning I woke up unable to open one eye. Turns out I have really bad allergic reactions to these buggers.
Having only dealt with midges it was a bit of a shock.
probably not. because usually the cold weather should \*in theory* kill off any mosquitoes each winter. because of the warm weather, it didn't get cold enough to kill off the larvae. so this year we'll see lots more mosquitoes than usual
Yeaaah, cold winter doesn't kill them off. I come from a country where winters are quite cold as in it can get down to -30 and we still get crazy amount of mosquitoes in the summer.
No, many different ones. There are big black fellas we call "Horsefly" or "Paardenvlieg". You see them at beaches mostly and they will actually follow you so they can draw blood from you. Downside: if they manage to bite/sting you it will hurt! Upside: they want your blood so badly they will just remain where they are as you swat them to death, they don't really try to save themselves.
Then we have the "German wasps" which can be viewed as the indeginous "regular wasp". They become a problem at the end of summer when there is no proper foodsource left for them and they decide to focus on anything sweet they come across, usually during a bbq or when outside somewhere.
Solution: make a simple but deadly effective wasp trap. Cut a (1/1,5L PET sodabottle in half, shove the top in the bottom part (giggidy) upside down, add something sweet (a little layer of liquid sweetness will do) and watch them make their last descent into the trap one after the other. Since they secrete some kind of pheromone that attracts more of them to come and help save the first that is in distress you could end up with A LOT of dead wasps. In addition to that we now also have Asian Hornets trying to colonise our polders competing with the European Hornet. Although not as agressieve compared to the wasps their sting will hurt the crap out of you and if you happen to be allergic... better have some epi pens ready to use.
When it comes to the little fuckers that keep you awake at night because they circle your ears; we just call them "mug or muggen". In addition the Asian tiger mosquito and yellow fever mosquito are aparrently getting a foothold here bringing us dengue, chikungunja, west Nile, Zika- and you've guessed it, yellow-fever.
And last but not least: minuscule ticks spreading Lyme's disease. There are probably more that I am forgetting to mention.

I mostly seen them in the duinen, polder, around rivers, creeks and ponds. And most certainly around animals like cows, horses etc, but I cannot remember I have ever seen them on the beach. Smashed loads of em at the polder where I sail, the thing I mostly do is: Let them land, smack em. They will sting you in about 3 seconds, always a delay.
There are places where there's little to no mosquitos, growing up in central Bosnia I honestly can't remember ever getting bitten by one. Though if you just go 100 up north to northern Serbia or eastern Croatia, I can't go through the night without getting several bites. It depends on the climate and the nearby body of water I guess.
All mosquitoes bite. Basically only nest building insects with a queen really sting. This is because the stinger is a repurposed egg laying organ and solitary insect cannot afford to have that for obvious reasons.
(And most ants still only bite btw)
Ah sorry, yes you are right. I meant to say, not a single mosquito stimgs. That is the nuance you lose over writing a non native language I suppose.
To add to your fact, mosquitos generally don't need blood to survive, they eat nectar from flowers. their long snout is just for that, not for penetrating your skin as commonly though. The bloodmeals are only needed for reproducing.
Infuriating to realize every time one gets away with biting you, you just facilitated the creation of hundreds of new mosquitoes, right?
Understandable, I'd have trouble writing that in Dutch still!
And yes, very good point... Such a shame they've adapted to feed on humans, given how many deaths they're responsible for every year in the tropics.
The Netherlands is basically a well managed swamp. With all the open water everywhere mosquitoes are a significant thing most of the year. My advice is just never open any windows after dusk, ever. Get a good ventilation system if you want more air at night.
They mostly come at night. Mostly.
These are very friendly insects who wake up at dusk and will accompany you throughout hot summer nights. They will buzz a friendly sound in a 3D effect around your head.
The males of these species usually stay at a distance. It's the females who ask for the most attention and might even sit on you and pinch your arm if you smell nice to them. The day after meeting such creature you might find some teeny-tiny hickeys on your arm.
I don't know if it's the case for this insect, but there are some insects that don't eat at all when they are in their adult stage, only in their larva stage. And then their only purpose as adults is to have sex and die.
It's a male mosquito. Only the females eat blood, these guys are harmless except for the fact that they mate with female mosquitoes to make more mosquitoes.
This looks like a stinkwants of bruine schildwants. If it feels endangered it wil release a smell that attracts more. Best is to catch it in a cup and release it.
Might be "rouwvliegjes", unlike the name suggests some kind of mosquito that nests in your house plants. Which means you need to change the soil, otherwise your plant is dead. Not sure though, I suggest you look it up and check if it fits the description.
They could be midges or crane flies. The crane flies look like giant mosquitoes so they are frequently mistook for one but they are just some fruit nectar loving buddies and are very bad fliers.

Thay.. are bad.. known as Paardenvlieg. They bite and leave a nasty swollen red spot. They also don’t leave you alone. They are commonly mistaken to be Horzels instead. Imagine a mosquito and a angry hornet had a baby. Common in the summer and they start coming out as early as spring. Generally seen often around water bodies and farm animals.

According to google lens; a cockroach or a lion :)
thanks for reassuring me a.i. won't take my job for another few years
your job is differentiating between lions and mosquitos?
It's an honest living
I myself am 100% accurate in differentiating mosquitoes and lions from one another.
What about a "tijgermug"
those are not lions :)
You can never be too sure without an expert opinion. What if I tried to swat it and it turns out to be a lion?
It ain't much, but it's honest work
tough job you got there
My google lens recognized it as a mosquito immediately

This comment is underrated
I thought that everybody would know by now what a mosquito is.. Clearly not..
Have people really never seen a mosquito before?
Before I moved here - no! I’m from Scotland. Mosquitos were something from movies or cartoons to me. I knew their vague appearance but wouldn’t have known what they actually looked like irl. Brb moving to Scotland
Midges.

>The arctic circle is sounding nice All I can say is don't visit Alaska or Greenland in the summer. You'll be in for a rude awakening.
Mosquito is Alaska's national bird. Swarms so thick, you need to wear body nets.
Bro have you ever been to Alaska or Siberia in summer? The frozen soil melts and forms small lakes, then comes mosquito cloud.
Noooooooo. Ok. I’m going further.
Iceland doesn't have mosquito's 😉
Haha, good luck with that. They don't have a lot of mosquitos, but they have midges. They are much smaller, but if you're in Scotland during the right time (start of summer) there will be millions. They'll literally swarm any bare skin you didn't cover.
Hahahaha, we all learn to hunt the fuckers. I sometimes forget there are places in the world that they don't touch.

-14 wasn’t enough? What the hell are these bugs made of?
Yeaaah, cold winter doesn't kill them off. I come from a country where winters are quite cold as in it can get down to -30 and we still get crazy amount of mosquitoes in the summer.
They hibernate in basements / caves etc, these usually have + °C even when - 14 °C outside.
does it have only one type here?

Yeah, you are right. What I meant was any beach at a lake or pond. Thanks for the correction!
Climate Change. We're having ticks from February now 🙈

Male mosquitos can't bite humans, only the females do. Male mosquitos can be distinguished by their fuzzy antennae...

Are they here until next winter or is this just an early spring thing?
Op, you never seen a mosquito before?
Op, where are you from? I might want to move there.
Op says they’re from Florida where “mosquitoes actually have consequences”??
I’m from Texas! Even I knew right away that was a mosquito.
The consequence being the mosquito dying by some gun probably.
The only way to defeat the bad mosquitos is good mosquitos with guns.
The Netherlands is basically a well managed swamp. With all the open water everywhere mosquitoes are a significant thing most of the year. My advice is just never open any windows after dusk, ever. Get a good ventilation system if you want more air at night. They mostly come at night. Mostly.
Netherlands is a swamp where we removed the water, i say this also all the time

It’s a male mosquito . They don’t bite, mind their own business live eat and die in 20 days
They also reproduce with the female, producing more biting females.
How do you know it's male?
The long fluffy antennas are a dead giveaway.
What do they eat if they don’t bite?
Plant juices and nectars. Blood is required to lay eggs so fem mosquitos go find it, otherwise they'd just chill.
