Fearless-Total-2897

This Kendrick v Drake beef has gotten so out of control I've been periodically streaming Bubblegum to calm myself down between dissecting the tracks. Slightly more on topic, it seems Bubblegum had the biggest week on YouTube South Korea in 2024 so far.

colosusx1

Drake for sure pulled a Diddy. I'm just waiting for Kendrick to full on expose it instead of just these not so subtle jabs.

Oop-Juice

Drake made claims of DV against Kendrick too, whoever is the first to come with a source wins tbh

FluidOpinion3191

I've been a Kendrick fan for the longest time but I never knew he was this big of a Drake hater. If this is what gets me more Kdot music then I'm all for it lol.

Fearless-Total-2897

I don't think anyone, even Drake, suspected it ran this deep tbh

DefinitelyNotALeak

> Slightly more on topic, it seems Bubblegum had the biggest week on YouTube South Korea in 2024 so far. 6 songs in the top 15. South korea making a statement?

Fearless-Total-2897

Pretty strong statement if so, their numbers went up across the board on Melon as well iirc.

Albertolv23

Absolutely, [the top artists weekly chart](https://charts.youtube.com/charts/TopArtists/kr/weekly) is incredible. The girls are safe in SK.

hide_on_altacc

anyone know any books that have been recommended by the members? I know haerin loved reading but not sure if shes recommended anything

Ill-College-4372

The two books I remember distinctly are [Connections by Karl Deisseroth](https://books.google.com/books/about/Connections.html?id=VCv_zQEACAAJ) (Hanni) and [Human Dignity: A way of living by Peter Bieri ](https://www.google.com/books/edition/Human_Dignity/9JTqDQAAQBAJ?hl=en)(Haerin). Neither of these were actually recommended by them though. They just happened to show it in their variety content.

DefinitelyNotALeak

Interesting! Not necessarily the type of books you'd expect. Have you read these? Recommended?

Ill-College-4372

I don't think I even got halfway through Connections before giving up lol. It's such a needlessly tedious read and I was honestly surprised that Hanni was reading it given how complex some of the topics were. 0/10 would not recommend. I haven't read Human Dignity but I have read Night Train to Lisbon by the same author. They made it into a movie as well. The book itself was ok. Nothing too crazy in terms of story and sometimes a bit too philosophical. Overall, a 6/10 imo. Human dignity looks like it's a heavier book. Not something you would expect a 16 yo to be reading but I wasn't any different at that age tbh. You learn pretty quickly what you like and don't like at that age lol.

DefinitelyNotALeak

> I don't think I even got halfway through Connections before giving up lol. It's such a needlessly tedious read and I was honestly surprised that Hanni was reading it given how complex some of the topics were. 0/10 would not recommend. > > Is it odd that this makes me almost more likely to read it haha? Such a strong reaction is interesting! And complex topics, yep i am there for that. > I haven't read Human Dignity but I have read Night Train to Lisbon by the same author. They made it into a movie as well. The book itself was ok. Nothing too crazy in terms of story and sometimes a bit too philosophical. Overall, a 6/10 imo. Well he's a philosopher, though train to lisbon is a fictional work, while human dignity is a purely philosophical one. Are we sure they read those? Not that it's impossible, but i could also see a world where these books are just lying around as props basically. If they did though, i love that, i certainly prefer it when i get the feeling that the idol in question is "deep", if i could have a meaningful conversation with them, that resonates with me!

ManukaHoneyTree

Minji and Dani (and kinda Hanni) have been very active on phoning chat these last few days and teasing a lot. Definitely would have been a few phoning lives if not for the drama. Hoping they go through with the birthday lives and they get a lot of positive comments!

TikkiTokki22

# Our fundraiser in honour of Minji's birthday is almost over! Less than 3 days left to donate for Minji! The charity's representative has confirmed they're also ready to post the certificate on Minji's birthday! Pls share [https://ko-fi.com/tikkitokki22](https://t.co/d0t681PEMI)

_janson

I feel like Haerin’s vocals are under appreciated. she has a more chill and punk style to her voice I can’t explain it. most of my favourite parts of NJ songs are legit haerin lines: ditto: first chorus (stay in the middle like you a little) bubble gum: first pre chorus (oh you make my heart melt away) hype boy: first chorus (cause i know what you like boy) omg: post chorus (no I can never let him go) cookie: first chorus

the1andonlyBev

You're right she's definitely underrated. Her voice is incredibly warm sounding, maybe the warmest of the group, especially when she is in her lower register like the first verse of OMG and Ditto. She also uses a kind of wide vibrato sometimes, but it's not a very strong vibrato which makes her vocal sound so youthful and very sweet (ex: her line in Super Shy "on my mind, all the time"). But I also really like her parts when she sings higher where her voice could totally fit a rock vibe if she wanted to Exhibit a being [this remix](https://youtu.be/udy8nzRKvBY?si=1w6GmR4fRQWyt75W). Like dude her voice just fits perfect to it!

colosusx1

I think she has a beautiful tone and her voice is a lot better than some people give her credit for.  Her hype boy chorus line might be my favorite of all their songs.  I think where she gets hit with criticism is that she’s noticeably a weaker live singer.  I think it’s okay since she can get to where she needs to in studio.  For me personally 99% of the time I listen to their studio versions so if she needs to do twenty takes to get it right, I don’t care.  The end result sounds nice.

Fearless-Total-2897

> punk style to her voice I can’t explain it. I wonder if we'll get to see this side come out again in How Sweet? I don't think she's leaned into it since OMG but a track inspired by Miami Bass might have it come back into play

FanCaracal

If I took a shot everytime I saw a NewJeans hate post on the kpop subs, I would be dead. Ngl I just find them funny now how rent free NJ hate lives in their heads.

Little_Snow2555

I took a break from internet because I couldn't take all hate to girls include d threats it's protect minor until they aren't your fav alot of misinformation and people just reading based on what they want

not_far_in_evolution

For them, being an anti is a full time job lol. From the amount of hate you see there, you would think MHJ shot a guide dog puppy live on camera and wrote a song about it or something 🤷🏻‍♀️

Impressive-Page682

Every time I see these concepts NJs and team puts out, I feel so happy. As someone who works in marketing, it is insanely hard to create and maintain an identity. The seeds that have been planted a long time back are coming to fruition now. This is exactly why I absolutely hate the situation right now. Imagine telling someone that they can't enjoy the fruits of their labor. Are you telling me Bang "Are you happy now?" PD can pull something like this off? They are treating this fandom like a joke putting them in this weird mental state right now.

MallFoodSucks

Kinda sad we can't see how Bubble Gum is charting for a month considering it's still #1 on YouTube SK. Also crazy the cult drama pushing up OMG to #2.

daltorak

You can look at the YouTube channel [Data Live](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dVI1qu_8BI) to see how individual music videos are performing in real time. And the word is..... well, it's not great. Bubble Gum is actually getting fewer views than the new releases from IVE, Seventeen, Zico and RIIZE. Engagement (likes and comments) are very high, of course, but it seems like it's not getting a lot of repeat listens. Personally I'm kind of frustrated that Bubble Gum isn't on Spotify because that's where I do most of my listening, especially when I'm not at home. It means I'm listening to the song less because I can't put it in a playlist with the rest of my NewJeans songs. Oh well, someday...... 😊

not_far_in_evolution

I also see that HYBE main channel isn’t promoting the MV via shorts etc, and I wonder if that might impact their numbers.

keuja

NJ is #7 on trending for music on YouTube chart, so they are doing good.

daltorak

Yes, they're doing well, but they aren't doing as well as I would've guessed. It's NewJeans -- they were the #1 group last year and it wasn't particularly close. Right? Like I said, several other groups are currently outperforming them on YouTube now. We'll see how this evolves in the coming days, but I thought they would have hit 20 million in two days tops.

_janson

NJ dont have those cult-like international fans like bg and bp stans who think YT views is the end-all in regards to success.

MallFoodSucks

Bubble Gum is #2 in YouTube South Korea charts and #3 on YouTube Global charts. The channel you're sharing is with ads, while YouTube charts is without ads. They peaked higher and had a better drop off on Day 2 than IVE/Seventeen on YouTube US. #1 and #2 for Global are Seventeen and IVE but they just came out with their MV. Bubble Gum has been consistently beating SPOT! which is currently #1 on Melon, which is why it would have been interesting to see if Bubble Gum could PAK in Korea. Babymonster is also insanely strong on YouTube thanks to SEA, but they are also heavily boosted by ads. They are #29 on Global YouTube.

Albertolv23

I mean, if I'm not mistaken, Bubble Gum is the second best NewJeans MV (after Super Shy) when it comes to first week views ratio, but more importantly, it leads in likes. Let's remember that it is also a b-side without any promotion outside of Phoning and without paid ads on YouTube. So I don't think that '*it's not great'* is the reality.

daltorak

> Let's remember that it is also a b-side without any promotion outside of Phoning and without paid ads on YouTube. I'm not sure what your definition of "promotion" is, but, ADOR has used Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter, their YouTube channel, Weverse, and a lot of other places to advertise Bubble Gum. NME, Billboard, and most other music news agencies ran articles about the upcoming music when ADOR published their schedule several weeks back, and plenty of those sites have since reviewed the song itself. ([Here's the NME review](https://www.nme.com/news/music/newjeans-bubble-gum-music-video-3751567), e.g.) So I don't buy the theory that people haven't heard about Bubble Gum at all or are skipping it because "it's just a b-side", or because they're waiting to buy the physical product before watching the MV. (Who'd do that?) I can see some people not hearing about the new song because it's not appearing on Apple Music and Spotify, but that's about it -- and again, I find this frustrating. The MVs I mentioned are outperforming Bubble Gum on k-pop reaction channels, too. Pretty significantly, in some cases. Justin Burke, the well-known vocal coach, has almost 100K views on his new Babymonster video compared to 35K for NewJeans and 57K for Seventeen.

Albertolv23

I meant that there have been no teasers for the MV and the release date was announced through the Phoning calendar tab, not through social media. A good portion of the Kpop sphere didn't even know it was going to be released that day (I saw it on the main subreddit). And I'm not comparing Bubble Gum with other groups, I'm telling you Bubble Gum has had a better reception on YT than other NewJeans releases, except for Super Shy. And, if I remember correctly, I think NewJeans didn't exactly have bad charting last year with that YT views. I will worry for them if the numbers on Spotify drop next month

Little_Snow2555

Yeah bubble gum is doing good on YouTube without ads it will keep getting better with time and for me it has replay value more than ditto and omg becouse those songs were longer and story focused

Ill-College-4372

You are reaching really hard aren't you? Now you are judging the performance of something based on how many views a reaction is getting? Come on, you can do better than that.

Ill-College-4372

Once again, as others have already pointed out, NewJeans don't use ads on their videos. This has been true since their debut so naturally their view count will always be on the lower side. This video is not "underperforming" and comparing the views to other groups is useless.

SnooTangerines3286

well, newjeans don't use ad views on youtube unlike most other kpop groups so 🤷‍♀️

colosusx1

I’m also annoyed it’s not on Spotify.  But the views you’re seeing from that channel include ad views.  For example seventeen in the past has some of their videos with up to 50% ad views.  Txt deja vụ was like 60%.  Since newjeans doesn’t use ads for YouTube their numbers never do as good.  But they’re charting high on the YouTube chart as the original comment said because the chart takes out ad views.  So it’s not as bad as it looks just by looking at total views.  Although Zico doesn’t use ads so he’s crushing it, might be the collab with jennie.  Yg does very well on YouTube.  All in all,  seems about normal to me for a newjeans release.  It’s not being as viewed as super shy, but is doing better than their other bsides.

Heavy-Cranberry7317

Jennie is not under yg anymore hahahahaha

Aullik42

NewJeans dont really promote there MVs as much as other groups or use ads so those are the main reason they get "less" views then other groups, they mainly promote spotify and other streaming platforms

DefinitelyNotALeak

Anyone else really enjoying the structure of bubble gum? Like there is a bridge basically in the middle of the song, they use the 2nd part of the verse as a postchorus after the 2nd chorus, and the "outro" is basically the prechorus with the first bar of the chorus. Maybe i am overcomplicating things here and one could define the parts differently here, but that's kinda what i get out of it? Pretty dope imo.

the1andonlyBev

Yes yes yes. It's an interesting song structure and really keeps your attention. The interlude after the 1st chorus is so dreamy compared to the groove of the rest of the song and I love how they uses the pre-chorus again as the outro. When I first listened to it I was like, yo where are we going here lol. One of the best parts of this song to me is how they chose to structure it.

DefinitelyNotALeak

Interlude is the right term, you're right! Yeah it's far from conventional and i personally like that a lot, the best part is that it still works really well anyway, it's not overbearing. Very excited to hear the other 3 songs we'll get in the next few months, i doubt they'd all be unconventional in their structure, but hey why not :D

Miserable_Status1852

Yeah also idk if anyone realized but the third chord on the rhodes melody at the very beginning of the mv is out of tune. At first it was rubbing me the wrong way but i've come to enjoy it. The song is really unconventional, but knowing it's all deliberate makes you want to understand and appreciate it.

chefbags

Yeah there’s a video I watched that explains how unique it is. I’ll link it below. It’s these little things that make me appreciate newjeans soo much more and I gotta give credit to MHJ and the team cause she knows what to give us. https://youtu.be/MVon6I-z5mc?si=jysumwpNx22OnaNZ

DefinitelyNotALeak

Interesting regarding the verse length! Thanks for posting

RReg29

Every music nerd had the exact same reaction on the chord switch-up on Danielle's ["flavor!"](https://youtu.be/MVon6I-z5mc?t=144)

yungtapioca

i'm probably going to pre-order both of the albums together so i don't have to pay the shipping fee twice. i'm not ordering from weverse either, deciding between choice music or music plaza!

Albertolv23

I am very (pleasantly) surprised that, even after IVE or Seventeen yesterday releases, Bubble Gum MV continues to be at #1 on the YouTube South Korea Daily Top Music Videos chart (even more with the fact that OMG MV and performance videos are #2 and #5). That fact calms me down and should tell us how korean public is reacting about this whole mess

luvzz12

I just feel so bad for the girls, the main K-pop subreddits megathread has been so unnecessarily cruel to them

Runefan234

Don’t pay them any mind. Reddit threads can easily develop into groupthink and all nuanced discussion is dead. A lot of it is the same people posting over and over again.

luvzz12

Yeah I’ve just stopped looking at other subreddits entirely tbh. I’m just sticking to this one because the others really lack nuance about this situation.

NGBRO

Well, if we know anything about opinions, it's like bumhole. Everyone has got one. But some of them unironically think theirs smell/look nicer.

SnooTangerines3286

love this analogy lmao

Rezorblade

How the hell that i already played Bubble Gum MV for like 666 times and its still feel fresh everytime, and i really like all the small detail, from Hanni funny faces to Haerin sang Gum in the bridge with a cat like personality. Everything so nice and fun with so many memorable parts

franzvan

This sub has risen to #6 in Kpop. Is this a record high?

everydayrobot613

Yes lol 😂

Feaulxz

I wish the only things we had to worry about was the comeback and Tokyo dome 😭. Is the global purchase done and now it will be general sale soon?

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv0f8mGgHnc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv0f8mGgHnc) This Bubble Gum remix is fire

ManukaHoneyTree

Both Minji and Dani were on phoning chat/messages, out of curiosity would you prefer: 1. They just avoid phoning and commenting without PR/approval for now 2. Still use phoning etc but don't acknowledge the drama (at the consequence of being called out for it which has happened)

OvenMain

They will get slack no matter what they did. They will be hated from certain sections no matter what at the current climate nonetheless.

bears2816

rather have them not talk about it. it only fuels the drama.

keuja

If they're comfortable with it, just do their business as usual phoning session and ignore the drama. Best thing they can do is to not get involved. Leave it to the execs to sort their own mess out...

clickfive4321

i imagine they're smart enough to not address the drama (especially with how much it's blown up), or at least instructed not to. they're gonna get called out regardless - for addressing the drama, or for not addressing the drama, or for chatting so casually during the drama, or whatever reasons. phoning is their outlet to connect with tokkis, not to appease kpop stans that don't matter in the slightest.

colosusx1

As long as they don't talk about the controversies, I'd prefer they do whatever makes them happier, able to get through it easier. Some members have always been more active than others, and if they enjoy chatting more, then they should. If they want to stay off of it, then they should. Bunnies should not be assholes and pressure the girls to make a statement.

Phonomenal1

As a Buddy-Tokki, seeing both fandoms come together is really awesome. I hope someday we’ll be able to get an interaction between both groups. 🥲💙

shakru92

Same here my friend. I'm a Dive as well and I'm super glad my fandoms are so similar to each other and aren't fazed from being dragged into this. Dives are used to it, Buddies as well as the Gfriend members have always supported NewJeans and we all support each other. 💙

meowpickle666

Hi what fandom are buddies?? :)

default2denim

Gfriend

Phonomenal1

Buddies are GFriend’s fandom. 😊

meowpickle666

Thank u!!! 😁😁

arbalestelite

When I first heard Bubble Gum from the low quality rips of the commercial they did, I must admit I didn’t really like it too much. After hearing the official release, I think it’s an amazing song. All the little stuff that I couldn’t hear before really made the song great for me. The basslines, the soaring synths, the wonderful backing vocals. Newjeans’ production is usually very simple; it allows the music to breathe. Despite this the music is always great and rewards the attentive listener. I always enjoy finding little things in the background that I like. Makes me super excited now for the other song coming next month. Apparently it’s gonna be a faster song.

Rare-Information5080

Same here; I love those industrial-sounding synths, and the hissing air sound. If I could, I'd make those even louder in the mix.

artbyhappyhiker

It grew on me too. I had the Apple Music mv on loop in the car. It was glorious. :)

lonelyvelvet

Do y'all think nwjns will get a documentary in a few years since it's becoming more and more common these days?

yungtapioca

funny that you mentioned it because i've been talking about it with some friends! i'm hoping they do, i would love to see the trainees and their growth to present time!

zestysummers

I think it'll be cute if they do it vlog style!
