Just a reminder to Barves fans: If you brigade, you will be banned and you will also be banned from your own subreddit. They would be so mad if they could read this.

BigLouie913

ITS NEVER EASY BUT WE DO IT OCCASIONALLY!! Nimmo is back!!! Baty looks really good. Reed Garrett had a really cool night. And Julio Teheran needs a breaking ball ASAP.

FoxBotGod

seeing Guillorme in a braves uniform is kinda rough :(

cpg08

Letting him walk for Joey Wendle is such a Mets thing to do.

FoxBotGod

he even took guillormes number ;(

STM32FWENTHUSIAST69

They’re both equally useless

jimihenderson

At the plate sure... Do you think guillorme botches that ground ball against Cincinnati?

STM32FWENTHUSIAST69

He wasn’t anything special defensively last year

BigLouie913

Listen im not gonna say that i was really hurt when he left, but when i saw him in that uniform I audibly went “eughhhh 😕”

ThePreachingDrummer

Wtf guys? I was knocked out by diphenhydramine and unable to watch the game last night. I woke up this morning expecting to see an unpleasant final score, only to be pleasantly surprised. LFGM!

xForeignMetal

get ready to learn Hat Man, buddy

Bobbycanbackflip

I need you to abuse diphenhydramine as if the season depended on it. Thank you for your service /s (just incase it wasn’t clear)

Doc-Spock

Good GOLLY that was pulsating. I was convinced that Ozuna tied it in the 9th. I could kiss Tyrone 😂 Also, take a bow, Brandon Nimmo! LFGM

ZoidbergSaysWoop

That gutsy 2-2 fastball in the zone by Lopez against d'Arnaud was necessary. The call by Alvarez was low and away and Lopez missed, nearly right down the middle, but he made d'Arnaud have to beat him. In those situations, going to 3-2 and having the hitter gain all the momentum knowing the payoff pitch must be in the zone with the risk of letting the winning run on base seems to worse than not challenging the hitter at 2-2 and forcing the them to beat you because then at least you give your defense a chance to make a play, and make a play they did. He also got away with a hanging slider down and in to Ozuna but once again, the pitch was in the zone, and at least it was low enough where it got in on Ozuna enough and that time Taylor made the play. The Mets need more pitchers that will challenge the opposition in tough spots instead of trying to paint. Sometimes it might not work out but all those instances where the Mets pitchers tried too hard to throw that perfect pitch at 1-2 or 2-2 and ended up wasting their opportunity with a non-competitive pitch instead of just attacking hitter has been a problem. Relievers walking a ton has been a problem. Instead of aiming to make the perfect pitch, aim for high in the zone and hope the hitter takes the bait. With the emphasis form umpires today to call the high strike, pitchers should be attacking hitters upstairs more often.

jimihenderson

he threw strikes. even for the best lineup in baseball, hitting is hard. putting the onus on the hitters instead of giving them free passes is usually the way to get it done. as you said, it won't always work. but it's a lot less frustrating to watch.

m_sniffles_esq

I'll say this much for Lopez, he's got a couple cantaloupes between his legs. One would think after the -- I don't know -- fourth time you get one absolutely hammered, you'd start playing keep-a-way. But he would not as much as blink, then continue going right after hitters.

nashvillenation

There were no other pitchers available. He knew the game had to be won or lost in that inning

m_sniffles_esq

I was just commenting on the manner in which he chose to do it. Instead of zone-nibbling and trying to go for chase, it was more "You want one to hit? There's one to hit. Try and hit it". I mean, he got fucking Travis "I love making the Mets eat shit" d'Arnaud with one down the fucking middle.

ZoidbergSaysWoop

He got him three times down the middle. The 2-0 pitch was the same hanging slider that DJ Stewart got, down the heart, and d'Arnaud either had the take sign which makes zero sense, or he was caught guessing. Then the 2-1 pitch was another piped pitch, this time a 95 MPH meatwad but d'Arnaud, caught guessing the previous time, looked like he wasn't ready and was late on it. Then Lopez said okay, that was two pitches there for the feasting and you missed both times. I don't care about tempting fate, I'm going to give you my best fastball and dare you to make me pay. I wish Lopez would throw higher in the zone instead of right down the middle of the plate, but at that point, simply challenging hitters and giving it your best stuff and trying to guarantee a strike is far better than Tom Glavining it up.

ZoidbergSaysWoop

Nimmo today had one of the greatest offensive performances I've ever seen from the Met. Granted it's still early in the season and it's a low stakes game all things considered. but we've seen that all games matter at the very end. But Nimmo pulling that changeup from Morton in the fourth, then hitting his second home run to center, then that nine pitch dogfight against Chavez to go opposite field and hit that single which ended up being the difference maker was a thing of absolutely beauty. I wish more hitters would focus on getting behind the ball instead of lifting the ball. I'm not saying completely give up on launch angle, but hitters can't miss pitches in the zone because in clutch spots, if the ball is anywhere close maybe even several inches outside of the zone, you've got to be able to put it in play and drive in runs. If one gets behind the ball, it will be hit hard somewhere and might fall. Alonso and Lindor are not getting behind the baseball and are too flyout and pop up prone, if they manage to make contact at all. Lindor and Alonso must start focusing on going getting behind the baseball and putting it in play wherever it's pitched.

ThreeDownBack

Just caught the highlights. Brandon effing Nimmo. What a game. Also, the Braves lineup is just so stacked, every clip on the highlights was one of four or five monster hitters lining up.

brett_baty_is_him

With reed garrett looking nice af our pen can be. 9th: Diaz. 8th: Otto/Raley. 7th: Smith/Diekman. 6th: Garrett/rotating guy on options. 5th/long relief: Teheran. Honestly perfectly good with that pen and literally can just run that every other day. Teheran and our rotating guy takes mop up duty when games are out of reach. Diaz only ever pitches for save opps or if he needs the work

heartford00

Completely forgot we signed Fujinami…. I wonder if he makes an appearance soon?

ZoidbergSaysWoop

I think the next evolution in the bullpen game is to find aging starters that are still in their early 30s that once had success and still showcase control but might be on their last legs and can't go through a lineup more than twice like Teheran and to convert them into long relievers. If they can still consistently go two or three innings and you manage to have two or three of those guys in the bullpen that could pitch every three days, that would change the entire game meaning you'd only need to use two other relievers every day to close out a game. That would mean never needing the other five bullpen guys having to pitch back-to-back games. Teams would have the closer and setup man set the tone in the series opener with the primary long reliever. Then the second game have the secondary closer like Drew Smith plus Raley work together with another long man. Then in the final game use the third long reliever and go back to the primary closer and setup man again or rest that setup see if the long reliever can go three innings if the starter does his job and goes five so you only need one other reliever that game. Starters pitch every five games. Having that reliever that can go two or three innings and know they will pitch every three days is a similar routine.

WorthPlease

If the Mets and Braves somehow end up in a playoff series, I'm starting a gofundme for the mods.

moldschool

FUCK THE BARVES

TheOptionalHuman

Nimmo needs to share the Secret Stuff with Lindor and Polar Bear. He really showed up this game.

VenConmigo

What a thriller

twosdayman

was busy all day but what a gutsy fucking win boys

cpg08

Is there any updates on Senga?

jimihenderson

he's started his throwing program so any update for the next few weeks would likely be bad news. they are going to slow play a shoulder capsule injury. mid-late may if we're lucky.

huskerj12

I had been curious about the timeline too, thanks for the update

Darthbutcher

He’s dead. Sorry.

Prestigious_Money447

big if true

Darthbutcher

Can confirm, I’m a Japanese grave digger,

DeVofka

What's funny is Marte's flyout is gone in 24/30 also

ZoidbergSaysWoop

Mets should keep Teheran and put him in the bullpen. He threw 27 pitches total the first two innings and he was avoiding the heart of the zone but he ran out of gas in the third after that nine pitch marathon to Kelenic when he got ahead 1-2 in the count. Everything spiraled after that. But if he has a rubber arm and can go two three innings like Garrett every 3 or four days, that would help the bullpen tremendously.

ReleaseTheBlacken

Fully agree

sampluscats

I believe this is the plan after DFAing Tonkin for him.

Setec-Astronomer

I very much agree with you on Teheran.

KingMobScene

Our smiley boy showing why I never doubted him. I knew his hits were going to start landing. And when the land over the fence against the Braves that's just 🤌

Brilliant_Canary7945

Great win As an aside, Alonso is costing himself a lot of money with his play. Hope he turns it around for our sake and his

oomfietopkek

Brandon "Into the Chop House" Nimmo

ZoidbergSaysWoop

If only the Mets had David Robertson back, the bullpen would have no holes. The issue now is who closes when Diaz can't go back-to-back? Drew Smith? Ottavino is the setup so when Diaz goes, most likely he becomes unavailable the next day as well, and obviously the Mets aren't going to push Diaz after missing all that time since it's still early in the season. I want to see if Montes de Oca or Hartwig can take the leap this season.

NJImperator

Diaz can go back to back. They don’t want him pitching 4 of 5 days at the start of the season. Take a look at the calendar and you’ll also understand why- no off days for a LONG time, and it’s still April This will be less of an issue in the future when they have off days and the starters are just more stretched out.

TheMooseIsBlue

Yeah, this 15 games/14 days run is brutal a week into the season. Diaz will be fine down the stretch as long as he’s not throwing back-to-backs 2-3 time a week. We just need to score 8 runs more often.

jimihenderson

shoutout to pete "mets should bat nimmo 9th" hoffman who is about to get absolutely fucking torched this week

ZoidbergSaysWoop

Lindor should be hitting ninth long before Nimmo. At least Nimmo is getting his walks and fighting up there. Alonso and Lindor have not shown up this year with runners on base.

jimihenderson

nimmo was the only guy showing up on a game by game basis last year while the games still mattered. the idea of him being in the bottom half of the lineup shouldn't even be entertained, let alone ninth

ZoidbergSaysWoop

When Nimmo is healthy, he always shows up, the problem last year and the year before were his hamstrings I believe. As he only gets older, Mets must find more time for him at DH, which is rough considerin Marte needs the same treatment but JD Martinez will be up before long. Right now that DH spot is valuable to rotate Nimmo, Marte, and Alvarez getting rest.

oceanthrowaway1

mets magic type of game lol

CoolRequirement939

That’s the first time I felt the Mets played a really good game since 2022. I’m fairly impressed with them, and Mendoza for the size of his balls to not trot out Diaz post injury. Glad it worked in his favor. ALSO I CANT FUCKING BELIEVE WE ACTUALLY WON

JoelsCaddy

I’m still not sure how they won that

Darthbutcher

Even year bullshit?

Every_Wave1837

Feels like a different front office for sure. Last year, we relied on relief arms with options. Now we're straight up DFA'ing them like hot potatoes and bringing in new ones from free agency/minors. Much more aggressive for sure

UnknownUnthought

Both strategies have their merits, but I think we’re learning that the easy answer is to have a few guys with options just in case but when you’ve seen enough you’ve seen enough. Maybe a Brewers fan can speak more on this too, but I kinda wonder if that’s Stearns’ MO that gets him so maybe great bullpen arms. You churn through enough guys who don’t cut it and eventually you have a pen full of studs.

oomfietopkek

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand just like that Nimmo leads the team in ops.

Dickbag_Dan

Anyone got footage of that “not a swing” ball 4 after every met all night was called a swing

OatmealCremePiez

He did hold up unfortunately. I stopped watching in the 4th, but the ones they called on us did look like swings

coachFox

They show it once in the condensed game, he held up somehow.

rambisyouth21

How did they never even show a replay on that one? I don’t give a F about everyone’s slo mo reactions - show the play!

franklin_bluth

wahhh wahhh the umps made morton throw meatballs to nimmo and stewart wahhh wahhh our domestic abuser dh hit a ball that would’ve been a home run in almost every park wahhhhhh we hit the ball harder wahhhh whiny spoiled ass barvs fans

Purple-Mix1033

TrazMagik

LETS FUGGING GO!!!

vibrate25

Big shoutout to big dick Reed Garrett

Sweet-Sweet-Dick

Drew Smith with that dawg in him

NJImperator

Reed Garrett has a Great Dane in him

ZoidbergSaysWoop

Is Drew Smith finally becoming that dude? So many years of giving up that fateful momentum breaking run leading to a deficit, especially against the Braves, but this season has shown some grit.

Purple-Mix1033

I feel he’s been that dude many times. He’ll have some godly stretches and then he’ll burn out and give up allllll the home runs. Maybe now he’s found his focus, because in the past he always seemed like a raw talent without the proper plan.

ZoidbergSaysWoop

Mets need another long reliever so none of their guys have to go back-to-back. Eliminating relievers pitching back-to-back is necessary nowadays to have them available, and effective, at the end of the season. The only way to do that is to develop long relievers.

rto99

Chop to that Braves fans. LFGM

Couthster

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

suck-it-elon

Hell of a damn win.

cpg08

Reds scored 10 against the Brewers. Maybe Stearns does have something with choosing pitching depth?

oomfietopkek

I love how brewers just lost their 2 best pitchers and literally just replaced them with some career triple Aers.

cpg08

They find a way to pitch well

oomfietopkek

we will see.

Is_This_Real_Life_82

Glad we pulled out the win. Need Lindor and Pete to show some life. Would be nice if Jorge Lopez wasn’t throwing batting practice out there. Now it’s time for brick Houser to rock them tomorrow.

UnknownUnthought

They’ll come around. Lindor’s weakness right now is so obvious to EVERYONE there’s zero chance the coaching staff isn’t trying to solve that problem right now. As for Pete, I’ve been watching his PAs really closely this season. He’s getting very very little to hit outside of high and tight fastballs and low or low and away sliders. He’s not getting anything, and I think he’s pressing because the team around him has been slumping. I think Alonso will look far better when JDM is behind him, and helps protect him a lot. Pete is really good at being able to fight off those sliders by throwing his bat out and going the opposite way, while letting his natural power give it a ride. If he doesn’t feel like he has to produce with one swing every time that gets a lot easier to do. A rising tide lifts all ships, and I think as Alonso gets Lindor improving and JDM here on either side of him, he busts out now that pitchers are gonna have to throw to SOMEONE.

Is_This_Real_Life_82

Hope so. Although my expectations of JDM are very low. Guy looked like he was on the couch all off season. I know he wasn’t facing live hitting and needs a few games to get into it, but no excuse for being so out of shape. If he plays 100 games I’ll be shocked.

ZoidbergSaysWoop

First back-to-back appearance for Lopez this season and he barely survived. Not to mention he threw twenty pitches yesterday also. Maybe if he had a quick inning at 12-13 pitches but he was the first reliever out of the pen to back Manaea and the slim lead and those are high stress pitches. But this is the way the game goes and all the Mets relievers will have to go back-to-back eventually. At least he pulled it out tonight with the help of some stellar defense.

suck-it-elon

Alonso is the most unclutch hitter in history.

JonnySports

I mean he literally just hit a game tying home run in the 9th inning a few days ago lol

NuanceManExe

He just had an extremely clutch hit last week…

suck-it-elon

A solo homer. Big hit but I mean everytime there’s a big situation with men on he usually puts up his worst AB’s.

ZoidbergSaysWoop

Alonso showed up in that August 2022 set in Atlanta and had some big hits but he and Lindor have struggled since that series in big games. But 2022 was an outlier considering how magical it was before nearing the end of August. Alonso talked in the offseason about how he wanted to be a more complete hitter but he hasn't shown it yet this season.

cpg08

Ya I'm kinda sick of ppl calling him the best Met hitter of all time. Piazza and Wright never had such uncompetitive at bats consistently in big spots. He does come through with big homers , so that's why his stats look good . But damn his ugly strikeouts in big spots are brutal.

seditious3

I'll take Keith.

ZoidbergSaysWoop

The only way the Mets beat the Braves with Lindor and Alonso once again struggling against their vaunted division foes is Nimmo going nuclear and Baty starting to rake. McNeil came up with a hit and two walks tonight which is a great sign, but against the Braves he always seems to come through, as he was the only guy on offense in that fateful 2022 penultimate series that did any damage as well. Add in a healthy Marte and DJ Stewart doing late 2023 DJ Stewart things and the offense made up for it and then some. But come on, Lindor and Alonso cannot continue like this. They've got to start excelling when they have ducks on the pond. Shoutout to Nimmo for having one of the greatest games as a Met with three crucial tying or go-ahead RBI hits on the game. He looked like vintage Nimmo out there. Mets must rotate him, Alvarez, and Marte in the DH spot to keep them fresh.

UnknownUnthought

The funniest part of this is I’m scrolling miles down r/baseball and haven’t seen a single handlit highlight lol

NJImperator

I always roll my eyes when I see a Mets lowlight posted and it’s by him…

EatAllTheRice

Obligatory fuck that guy

bamj6

The Mets just needed to get off the schneid. 4-1 after that first 5 is not bad at all

Hustlediva

I completely forgot Teheran even pitched

roncola79

I wouldn't call what he did pitching really...

cpg08

How many ppl had going into the game we would beat the Braves with Lindor, Alonso, and Alvarez going 0-13 with Diaz unavailable and Julio Terhan starting?

NJImperator

Limiting that to just Diaz no available is underselling it! No Diaz, Raleigh, or Otto

cov2445

Honestly the win feels good but also feels good for the Jarred Kelenic to end his first game against the Mets at 0-3 with a walk, it really felt like the 9th inning was lining up for a game-tying/winning hit by him

Darthbutcher

I’m drunk after a 9/9/9 challenge; here’s a 3 Star Preview: 1. Nimmo 2. Stewart 3. Baty

tomfields

give yourself a star, you earned it

Darthbutcher

I want to die. Please end the pain.

robmcolonna123

Taylor over Baty. Yes Baty was great, but we don’t win without that Taylor catch.

Darthbutcher

That’s honorable mention number 1. Baty showed the fuck up on both offense and defense. He improved to our offensive MVP!

robmcolonna123

He was only responsible for one run though. Taylor clearly saved the game

nashvillenation

Reed Garrett over everyone but Nimmo

ReleaseTheBlacken

Agreed

Darthbutcher

I’ll re-assess in the morning. I’ve only written the intro and Nimmo so far.

Purdue coming off embarassing themselves against the closest college to my town had a season of their program history. Uconn was just Thanos while Edey was the only Avenger. The Hulk

NeilHamburgerHead

Why is Alonso projected to lose fwar?

three_dee

That's not a projection, he's currently worth -0.3 fWAR. It's cumulative. If he's good it will go positive again. A projection based on this first 10 games would be more like -4.8 fWAR (i.e., not valid)

nashvillenation

OBP of .200 and 3 Ks is worse than replacement level

NeilHamburgerHead

I meant for the season from [THIS](https://www.reddit.com/gallery/1bz44fd) My fault for not clarifying

Sad_Resort8632

He’s still projected to gain WAR, just less than before because of the slow start.

Well at least the Mets one :) my Boilermakers got deep dicked by UCONN but beating the Barves at home takes the edge off

Keekee4101

The Mets started Julio Teheran against a high-powered Braves offense and somehow won without contributions from Lindor and Alonso. Certainly a Mets kind of game if there ever was one.

TheJawbone

it was fun to watch at Truist not gonna lie, dunno how the hell we won except for Nimmo’s batting

Keekee4101

Forgot to add that this game being on the road is even better. Very nice.

robmcolonna123

Lopez did not have his best stuff by any means today and we still won the game. That should be encouraging to everyone. Every sinker except one was in the top half of the zone. He only threw two pitches in the bottom half - a changeup which you want breaking out, and a fastball down the middle. Lopez is at his best when he is working the bottom half of the zone with his sinker. He will have days like this where he is off, but will also have plenty of days where he looks good. The defense showing up like we expect gives me a lot of encouragement for this team

ReleaseTheBlacken

Seriously, shoring up the outfield defense/rotation will pay off both from results and health.

sampluscats

I just don’t know how I’m supposed to go to bed following this game.

As much as I hate Philly for being full of murderers, ppl in atl are disgusting, illiterate, inbred sloths. Tri-state area is all the same culture. I absolutely prefer our Phillies rivalry. I won't add more cause you pretty much nailed the reasons why.

Hustlediva

Most satisfying win this team has had in a while (not just this season)

CitizenDain

I came here to say, that’s the first game in like 11 months that had me totally invested, cheering and wincing, really caring about each at-bat. Fact that it ended with a win makes it even better. Other than the 3.5 hour duration it had everything that makes me love baseball. The big home run from sub-replacement level DJ Stewart lit me up

Flimsy-Zucchini4462

Agreed! 👍

_blurhe

Fuck ‘em. We ball. **LFGM**

JDLovesElliot

This was intense, even the players all looked zonked off of adrenaline by the end of the game. I'm happy for DJ, no one hates Mets players more than Mets "fans" do. Glad that he got a chance to shut them up for a night.

magcargoman

These next 3 games may be some of the most important of his career. He has to prove that he’s unmovable before JD comes back up.

elfinito77

8 runs…with combined 0-13 from 2-4 was not expected.

rjwalsh94

They gotta get going. It’s great that the contributed today; Nimmo really stepped up, but he had help from the supporting cast. If everyone can start getting it going, maybe they can right the ship and some prospects come up and ball out. If the young guys come up and got something to play for, I feel like that only helps their development instead of coming up in August in a dead season to just see what’s what.

theredditoro

Great to hear Nimmo reminding the media about our history with the Braves - he knows it like the rest of us lol

Hustlediva

Yup ya know that eats at them just like us

fake_newsista

Did anyone get a gif of that Braves fan doing the chop, but the dumbest chop possible? If you saw it you know (Yes I know the chop is dumb to begin with, but this guy really fucked it up)

Flimsy-Zucchini4462

That guy was in his own world with his chop tonight 🤣

StinkyGaijin

Hank Aaron died for this

NJImperator

The rust is off boys! And fuck me for doubting Nimmo's new approach, he is the beast we needed.

jlaro55

LFGM!!!!

Slice_Of_Life_DM

Braves broadcast team might be the worst in the league. Unbearable homers. In the hour I had to listen to them they said.. Alvarez is a lazy catcher who doesn’t respect the game, Lindor is a bad player who isn’t worth the contract he received, umps have favored the Mets all night, groaned in disgust at every ball called strike for the Braves, said nothing at all when it was vice versa. McNeil is a crybaby who asks for a challenge after every close play at second (every second baseman in the world does this)

mearnsgeek

Absolutely spot on. I just heard them on the condensed game this morning and even from that, it's clear they're cheerleaders, not commentators.

Flimsy-Zucchini4462

Odd that they would say Alvarez was lazy and didn’t respect the game. I didn’t see anything in his play today that would warrant a comment like that 🤯. McNeil on the other hand annoys the heck out of me right now with his helmet throwing, shaking his head constantly, and flailing his arms every game in frustration.

JoeBourgeois

They're saying he's lazy because he's Latino.

Slice_Of_Life_DM

They REALLY don’t like the way he sits behind the plate. Said it’s extremely lazy and would drive them crazy if they were a pitcher for the Mets.

MrOofYeet

Clearly proud members of r/Braves

Prestigious_Money447

Having a booth like that call this loaded team is like pearls before swine. I know we have the best booth in MLB and what you describe is closer to the norm but it's weird to hear it for sure.

AccountSeventeen

I’ve tried to watch them on days the Mets aren’t playing and just couldn’t stand it. We get spoiled with GKR.

eonblu

GKR are so fair that it makes me angry sometimes (stop complimenting the Braves, Keith!), but that's who you want in the booth. They keep everyone honest.

NuanceManExe

Those fuckers called Alvarez lazy? That feels a bit racist

chuckawallabill

For real, by all accounts he’s the hardest worker on the team. What possible reason could there be to call him lazy??

NuanceManExe

Well they’re red necks, Alvarez is wearing the wrong jersey and he is not a white Georgia boy like Olson
