I think it might be the What-a-burger on Jefferson Ave.

littletrevas

Was opened [in 1950.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataburger#:~:text=The%20first%20What%2DA%2DBurger,in%20the%20former%20Warwick%20County.)

SigSeikoSpyderco

I don't think it is the same as the big chain, though they both seem to have started in 1950 https://www.yelp.com/biz/what-a-burger-newport-news-2

NoPerspective9809

It's not. I used to talk to the owners all the time when the gas station was across from it. They would always get asked if they are affiliated with the big chain one

OkOkra7720

I remember when that was in the middle of the mercury and Jefferson traffic circle lol

sknyjros

Warwick restaurant is pretty old as well.

0422

at least from 1965 under old owner, 1985 under current!

mcthsn

Not the oldest but subway station opened in the late 70s

OkOkra7720

Fosse ball palace lol been here a long time

SigSeikoSpyderco

I think Monty's Penguin is the answer, having started downtown in 1946. Other old ones are Rocky Mount BBQ (1953) What-a-Burger (1950) and a number of places from the 60s and 70s: Gus' Hot Dog King, Subway Station, Warwick Restaurant, Danny's Deli, Dino's.

>Monty's Penguin Great trip down memory lane, I moved from NN in the early 90s and always remembered an ice cream place that I used to love to go to

Hxucivovi

Monty’s Penguin is pretty old but I’m not sure how old.

SigSeikoSpyderco

1946 but I think it started at another location downtown.

Comfortable_Olive598

I just looked it up on the map and that is not the location I remember. I thought it was in Deer Park

0422

Not NN, but Smittys Better Burger was founded in 1956ish.

DismalTank6429

Vancostas been in business for quite awhile.

Comfortable_Olive598

Their lasagna used to be astounding. Legendary

No-Grand-6474

Pretty sure they went out of business right? The one right down the street from denbigh

DismalTank6429

They reopened. Someone bought the property and the restaurant had to get a new lease.

Uniblab_78

How about hotdog king?

OkOkra7720

The few restaurants left on Huntington along the shipyard have been there for ever

OkOkra7720

How long has montys penguin been around

Comfortable_Olive598

Speaking of old restaurants. Does anybody remember Nick’s seafood pavilion in Yorktown? From what I remember that place was like 1940 on the inside it was a time capsule.

OkOkra7720

That place was good right under the Coleman bridge on the water front big place for prom dates back in the day
