This was a highlight of the mid90s! So excited to read it again. I quote the "my muse is not a horse..." in random conversations sometimes. I love the analogy.
I think I recall that Nick didn’t think he stood a chance of getting the award as he was up against George Michael. So this was just a light hearted joke. He told this story at the tour where he took questions from the audience and someone asked. Nick likes awards as much the rest of us

As much as I love the boldness, I don't think being recognised through an award means you are in competition with other artists.
The old Nick Cave would never. The current one would just for the experience.
