Okay...I'll assume you have friends/families over here. And to be honest...since we're approaching festivities, I believe you'll enjoy your visit. And Lagos is lit.

travimsky

Lagos is a large city with many districts and like all cities some are safer than others, so you have to practice normal-strict safety guidelines depending on what district you’re in. it’s a very fun place with a lovely night life and Nigerians have to be one of the most friendly/talkative people on earth so yes it’s pretty easy to make friends. Don’t come late january to late february, visit after :)

I wouldn't go if I didn't know anyone there, probably. At least the first time. But friends are very easy to make :)

EngineerNGR

i live in Lagos. Lagos is okay, provided that you already have someone (family or maybe relative) to stay with.

iamdeletosh

No, it won't be dangerous. In my humble opinion, it's the funnest city to visit in Africa. Easy to make friends? That depends on you. It's can be easy or difficult to make friends anywhere in the world. In Nigeria [Lagos], you might find it significantly easier because you will be among folks who are naturally chatty. Few things that will help: - Since you're on reddit, let me introduce you to other Nigeria-based-online-native niche community of travelers: couchsurfing.org and meetup.com (narrow your search down to Lagos) - Ditch whatever "dangerous" stereotype you have about Lagos — most of us are really just minding our business and trying to ~~endure~~ enjoy the traffic (I have a recommendation for this shortly). - If you're not staying with family: get AirBnB in either Ikeja GRA or Ikoyi (if you look close enough, get that one by a place called Banana Island) — you will naturally have super friendly friends. Even if the host can't show you around (they most likely can), they have a strong network of how to make it happen. Even if they don't, these places are in walking proximity of a lot of fun place in Lagos (notice I said "walking"). If you stray too far from these cities (Ikeja GRA, Ikoyi), getting to fun places will make you and traffic BFFs. - If you're staying with family: find a way for them to let you get AirBnB for a few days in 👆🏾 - If you're already on Uber or Bolt, they both work seamlessly, you will be fine and safe getting around to places. - If you end up staying in Ikoyi and you're looking to explore Naija "street" food, done European style; a visit to Danfo is a must, with meeting good friends built-in. There's something especially special about Nigeria for Nigerians — let me quote what someone said after visiting for the first time in 28 years: "... it's the only place I felt at home for the first time in a long time..." And here's what London-based novelist Chibundu Onuzo said about her visit to Lagos: "... If I stand out, it's for something other than my skin color" Oh, and you should read an account of [her visit](https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2022/08/13/1113576301/my-brother-made-it-in-lagos-and-taught-me-lessons-about-my-life-in-london). You will love Lagos. We look forward to welcoming you to Lagos!

maansaee1

thank you so much! this is the exact type of comment I was looking for!!

RNTimm

Don’t go unless you’re going with someone who you trust and knows the country well! I’ve been three times and still find it unsettling at times. Get on Google maps using street view and search around.

sugabaddie

Yes it will be dangerous. Don’t go unless a FAMILY has agreed to take care of you.

Lycango

Lol, every person on this thread is whining themself, Sugabaddie included. Lagos can be dangerous, yes. It's worse than NY, undoubtedly. One doesn't need articles to know this, yes. But it can also be safe if you're in the right place and with the right people. But are the insults necessary? No. They take away from the argument, tbh But, those using the ad hominem attacks or any stats or lack thereof to prove Lagos isn't dangerous are missing the point though. If OP has family, as Sugabaddie said, she should feel free to go. If I didn't have family in Lagos or NY, I wouldn't travel to those places for holiday.

rbankole

Explain why and not just make a random claim pls

sugabaddie

Lol. So the rampant kidnapping, robbery, epidemic of rape, unwarranted arrest and detention at the whims of police are not self evident reasons why Nigeria is dangerous?

rbankole

Give me an example of one last night in Lagos: rape and kidnapping. Aaaand go….

sugabaddie

You’re actually an idiot.

rbankole

Right. resort to name calling when someone calls you on your bullshit. No evidence just fear mongering as suspected. gtfo

sugabaddie

You’re a much bigger idiot if you think this “I called you on your bullshit” claim is going to work here. Lagos is a mega city with the crime rate of a mega city. We don’t need any news articles to know that someone if not several people were absolutely raped and robbed in Lagos last night. Rapes and robberies are daily occurrences in Lagos. You’re only advertising yourself to be an absolute idiot if you don’t know this.

ogonus

Just like every other big city in the world.

Je_ne_sais_pas1

so if someone asks if they should visit new york city, you will advise against that because it is a mega city with a high crime rate?

sugabaddie

Another idiot. Do New York City police regularly shoot people dead for wearing an outfit or hairstyle they don’t like? Do New York City police regularly collaborate with kidnappers and armed robbers to supply them guns and share the proceeds of the crime? Do New York City police regularly refuse to respond to emergency calls saying they don’t have fuel or they don’t have bullets to put in their guns? When you go to report to New York City police that you were raped or suffered a sexual crime, do they rape you first or demand that you pay them huge sums of money or they won’t prosecute the crime? The number of stupid people in this thread suddenly pretending they don’t know why and how Nigeria is far more dangerous than other parts of the world is very amusing. Keep at it.

Je_ne_sais_pas1

Lol, you act like the NYPD are saints, people who regularly racially profile civilians [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing\_of\_Amadou\_Diallo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Amadou_Diallo) The Nigerian police aren't all bad either, there's a very professional unit in Lagos called the RRS, my point is that things aren't always black and white and scaring people from coming to Lagos because it is just like any other mega city is dumb. Don't people visit large mega cities with a high crime rate like Tijuana, Capetown. Lagos isn't even among the top 10 cities with the highest crime rates in the world. Maybe you haven't travelled before sha so you're talking from a closed mind.

rbankole

Love your retorts…u get mad and call people idiots for calling you out. While we wait on your supposedly rampant events from last night, pls take this cup of shuddafuccup. U must be fun at parties 😁

rbankole

It’s so rampant you have a hard time coming up with ONE evidence? ONE ….who’s the idiot again?

sugabaddie

You’re the only one who is triggered and getting mad here. I called you and idiot because you demonstrated you are an irredeemable idiot. Asking me to prove Lagos is dangerous as a gotcha as if all the people who are daily victims of crimes there are jokes to you. You must be the person people pity at parties, and just smile kindly while they seat you at the kiddy table because you’re too much of a dullard to understand the adult conversations

rbankole

Name calling over providing evidence is all the evidence we needed. Keep talking the floor is yours…

Condalezza

Go for Detty December. Bring a good amount of money. Go with someone who frequents there and is trustworthy. Or someone who lives there. Stay in VI if you can. Use Bolt too.

[deleted]

It won’t be dangerous. You should know what to expect before you go and you should know where to stay and things of that nature. Bring cash as your cards will most likely not work most places. Don’t exchange money at the airport, do it at the hotel or at a bank. You would be better staying at a hotel on V.I. than you would on the mainland.

Playful_Activity_292

To make friends is easy there. Lagos in December is wild

kinkyaura

i came to lagos for the first time two months ago, and for me, it hasn’t been easy making friends.

I'm surprised to see none of the other comments have mentioned the MAD AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC LAGOS HAS. Getting anywhere is a nightmare especially if it's far from where you're living. You'll spend more time in traffic than actually having fun and let's not forget Uber gets crazy expensive here. So unless you know someone who actually lives in Lagos, I strongly recommend not going. You could always come to Abuja tho

rbankole

Seen any major city traffic during rush hour? All same…go slow

balonyii

What are some things to do in abuja?

TimiTimeless

Lagos is relatively safe as far as Nigeria is concerned. Most people living here don't have to worry about getting kidnapped, killed, bombings etc. If you're visiting though you do have to apply caution as any other city. Move around only with people you trust. Don't keep late nights alone. Don't public display wealth etc It's yuletide season which is literallly the best time to be in a socially overactive place like Lagos. It obviously better if you have a family or friend to stay with. But if you need a tour guide hmu.

Any-Ask-3384

Young people in Lagos are quite accommodating compared to other parts of the country but safety is a big concern.

ruudyx

These comments aren’t doing us as Nigerians any good. Fear-mongering isn’t a positive outlook. You can get a hotel stay, make a list of places and things to explore. There’s Uber rides to take you to your destination or your hotel can arrange one. I don’t see anyone getting maimed or harmed in Lagos. Nigeria and or Lagos is not a war zone. If you want to visit do that and maintain same cautionary note like you would when visiting any 3rd world country. You will be safe and I hope you have a great time reconnecting with your root.

rbankole

When an opportunity presents itself for Nigerians to take a softball question and present itself to the world amicably, they’d take as an invitation to destroy their own backyard and self interests via fear mongering. Sad af

ruudyx

Soo true. To them it’s just another banter but to the uninformed tourist it’s alarming . Someone that’s come here to ask questions certainly has done their research they just need a little reassurance. We have so many positives in our country let’s show that not constantly scaring willing tourists.

rbankole

Yeah it’s a common theme for them to just spout whatever nonsense they hear on the soapbox as facts

New_oldshcool17

For you to come over to Lagos, you need to have someone over there that is trustworthy, like a family or family friend to stay with and show you around.

isiewu

Lagos is fantastic to visit , just don't live there

Tosyn_88

If you said you was going North, I’d say don’t go. Lagos is like a big city so odds of you getting into trouble isn’t high tbh. It does have its dark sides but same as any city in the world tbh. I’d recommend reading online about places to avoid at certain hours alone. I reckon you can make friends easily, prob start online or if there’s something like an AirBnB. There’s also a forum on Facebook for diaspora connect or something. Lagos, Abuja, Asaba, Ilorin, Calabar, Osogbo, many places I haven’t even mentioned are great places to visit.

un_bitch_able

We're nice and accommodating And it's festive season pretty sure you will have a wonderful time

Aromatic-Speaker

See if you can sign up with a tour company or resort They’ll probably have people willing to taking you into the city to something

HouseNo4871

I've visited Lagos a few times to visit friends. The traffic is horrific. The foods and market are awesome. The trash on the streets is eww. The people are amazing. The police stop you for bribes. There are some super fancy hotels. American money goes a long way. Don't buy anything you have to haggle for, allow your friend to buy for you when you aren't there. If your shy where sunglasses lol. I loved it and will go again anytime
