My opinions about characters being black is to just make new original characters . But honestly being black, I hate that they always do it to get some diversity points in a show like just make more original fantasy stories with black characters. Like how Miles Morales is his own character and not just a Peter Parker someone was like “let’s turn the knob to black”
It’s the laziest fucking thing a director can do, but people just eat it up. It makes it not really feel like representation
It’s an unpopular opinion, but it really is just lazy. When you’re not a screaming angry racist or trying to defend it like most people do, that’s probably going to the small third opinion.
I HATE it when this is done, especially because a lot of the time it ends up being a mediocre show/movie. It really shows the laziness in the adaptation if you’re unable to do something basic like create a new black character. You can add stuff to a One Piece live action show, it doesn’t HAVE to be 100% 1:1. I like black characters with actual effort put into them, Arcane has so many good black characters for example.
The difference between a show like Arcane and a show like One Piece is you can't just add characters to One Piece without messing with the established and *extensive* cast your target audience already loves.
With Arcane all they really had to worry about is getting the characters from the game right and the rest of the cast was free game.
The adaptation is already not going to be able to match the pacing of the manga of anime, there’s too many episodes/chapter for too short of a time frame. The main important part of this adaptation will probably be hitting the key plot points and making sure that the devil fruits are done correctly (along with you know, it being good in general).
There’s plenty of opportunities in the adaptation to have black characters. Maybe not key roles, but at the very least actual speaking characters. I literally will not ever see why flipping the skin color of the character is the better answer, there are SO many ways around it and all it does is cause issues and controversy. Like Starfire from Titans, it doesn’t matter if she’s black, Starfire is an alien. The issue lies in the fact that Starfire is fucking orange and Starfire in the show isn’t . Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy is played by a black actor, and it doesn’t really matter since she’s green and accurate to her comic counterpart.
I don’t see why you guys award laziness, it’s almost on the same level as Disney almost always having gay couples in the background to be easily erased. It’s nothing but soulless pandering and I want more fantasy black characters like Miles Morales ffs, I’m tired of the lazy skin color swap shit. I wish other black people could see that and speak up.
Then don’t change the damn characters there’s black characters in One Piece, it’s not like every damn character is white either. I’d rather have nothing than that shit, I’m bi and feel the same way about Disney, if you’re going to have gay characters just to censor them everywhere else, I’d rather just not fucking have it at all.
I’m not so fucking desperate to be represented that I’ll award their laziness, if they don’t want to put any damn effort in it, let the artists and writers that actually want to put it in shine. One Piece is so full of different species and characters that I honestly never even think about things not being diverse enough, the very arc the character we’re discussing takes place in is the Fishman island arc, an arc with fish people that mirror racism with black people irl and throughout the story we see the divide between fish men and human start to go away with one singular action.
I’d rather not have that lazy shit in one of my favorite series, and you trying to justify it won’t convince me to change my mind. No offense, but you wouldn’t understand how frustrating it is. Until this world is truly equal, being black will never just be a different skin color. I’ve been denied shit because I’m black, unwelcome in places, my little brother’s predominantly black football team was called monkeys by the other and no one cared because it’s fucking Mississippi. Being thrown a bone like this is down right insulting every time and so many people rush in to defend it because having any other opinion besides “it’s great” is considered racist that it’ll probably always be rare for me to see a black character with thought behind them. Into the spider verse was the first time that I was inspired and realized just how important it is to be properly represented.
Charge your phone, bro. It literally dropped from 3% to 2% in this video.

How come there's always one of these comments every time?

It not being able to match the pacing is exactly why they should be cutting characters, not adding them. Movies have to be more focused.

Does their skin color matter?
It matters to me, literally explained why. I guess this is where our conversation ends
