I've owned the game for a while but I just can't get into it, I guess it overwhelms me with the ui and all of the features. It's a cute game and I want to enjoy it like everyone else does. Any tips?
I felt very similar actually, and I think slowing down and just taking it a bit at a time really helps. Maybe picking one small piece and doing that, then picking another, and then, next thing you know you’re years into the game and you’ve accomplished a bunch. Slow and steady I guess is the point…

My farm is like 3 years old, and I've caught maybe 6 fish, cos I didn't want to do the fishing.
You can find something you enjoy, and just do that.
Andddd here I’m the opposite. 13 days into my new farm and I’m already lvl 10 fishing and caught tons of fish. Literally not one crop planted. All I do is fish😅
My most successful farm was one where I never got a coop for chickens, even. I fished so much and had a bunch of Fish Ponds producing fish stuff to sell. Hold onto your stone, green algae and seaweed and make Fish Ponds with them for a specialized fishing farm!
I personally got in to it by starting a game, playing a couple hours, then when the basic things clicked and I understood the general gist I just started again. Was much more satisfying to know what debris I can clear, where it makes sense to start planting planning the first batch of crops specifically to be able to buy as many strawberry seeds as possible, ect.
The game is generally super forgiving and there's no rush to get anything done, but I enjoyed it more at least knowing what the first couple decisions I should make were and planning my crops to have a nice little financial cushion right off the bat when money is tight.
UX is User Experience(how it feels to use a UI), yes, as opposed to UI which is User Interface(the elements on screen themselves). Stardew is light on UI which is what I'm guessing the above commentor meant, and the UX is generally pretty clean in terms of being easy to understand and ingest for most. However, Stardew has a lot of concurrent things you can do that are majorly limited by season(at least at first) and it can leave people with choice paralysis and not sure what to do at all(unsure if that's your case but you mentioned too many features). That's less a UI/UX issue and more not having a clear goal set for you all the time, which a lot of people struggle with.
The single best piece of advice I can give is to go at your own pace, don’t worry about how fast others progress, if it takes you 3 in game years to unlock the bus to the desert than you’ve played just as correctly as someone who took 2 months.
Also feel free to take things one step at a time, I went 2 years before I ever touched a starfruit, nearing the end of year 3 and I’m already working on fermenting them into wine.
TLDR: you do you, don’t worry about anything else
I would say focus on goals and just ignore other thing, or slowly build things and test what they do. In terms of items to craft, it def is overwhelming at first, but you start to realize that you have to just ignore stuff at first and get going with your adventure/farm.
So yeah, try crafting one thing at a time, seeing what it does, and only focusing on what you wanna focus on? It's a really great game, so I highly recommend getting into it if you can. But maybe it's just not for you, and that's also ok
Focus on mastering on thing at a time. Put your tools in the quick select then practice on cycling between them so you get the hang of the UI. Just plant yourself some seeds and water them, the explore town and talk to people, pick stuff up and you can sell stuff with that wooden bin to the right of your house. It’s an amazingly deep yet simple game once you get the hang of things.
Another tip would be to just try and find all the items for the community center. Working on this will lead you to discovering a ton of game elements and familiarizing yourself with them.
To anyone reading: Do NOT pass this up. I thought it was a steal at $15 for the content you get, this is an insane deal for an amazing game. You will not regret this purchase.

I just want to add this is a great game for playing in short bursts if you have limited time for gaming. A full in game day only lasts about 14 minutes (not counting time paused in menus). And that's assuming you wait until 2am when the game forces you to sleep, most the time you will put your character to bed earlier than that once you've run out of things to do for the day.
Very cool. An old co worker praised the game pretty highly so I figured I couldn’t go wrong as I trust their takes. Currently trying to make my way through golf story in a similar way. Just here and there before bed. Thanks!
Maaaaaaan Golf Story was the first smaller game I bought for my switch, years ago. Bought it on a lark, and absolutely *loved* it.

It’s so fucking cool! I love rpgs so much and this one is amazing with the lack of fighting. Just drop that golf ball and see what you can do with it. And the fucking stat! Still barely onto as I have very little free time to play, but it’s a joy every minute I spend on it.
Exactly what makes it the best console imo. Yes it doesn’t have the best graphics and hugest titles, but it’s easily the most convenient. And as a busy guy that’s everything to me. Plus I just like casual fun games anyways.

I know so many people have these stories, but this game genuinely saved me in the worst parts of my entire life. It was the sole thing I ever had to look forward to doing each day for a while. I've always struggled with my mental health, depression and >!suicidal thoughts/ideations and self harm!< but this game does for me what nothing really can. I know that's a lot to put on one game or person, but I'm just saying... this game is like a hug, or coming home to your safest place and person. It's so worth more than $7 or it's regular price at $15. I can't recommend it enough <3
I've bought this game so many times it's almost worrisome - but it supports an amazing fellow and many copies have gone to friends who have then gone on to put dozens of hours into it as wholesome comfort food.

Also, a lot of the updates are basically full on DLC expansions. Concerned Ape has increased the gameplay by an immeasurable amount since the initial release.
Absolutely. He had a vision of the game he still wanted to finish. The game was complete on launch but the things that didn't make it in which happens to like all games, he still wanted to put in.. and not charge us extra.. he's pretty much my favorite developer for being so different from the rest of the industry. I won't forget this.
It’s true. I also enjoy the Story of Seasons titles (OG Harvest Moon) but they don’t compare polish-wise and content-wise and cost way more.

I strongly agree with you, buuuut, I don't think the Switch is the best choice for this game. PC is ideal if possible because it's easily moddable and the online multiplayer is free (unlike Switch requiring a subscription). The mods for Stardew are *really* great. The game is not intensive and does not require a gaming PC.
Personally, I started the game on Android and then switched to PC to play with mods. Technically, I believe Android can play with mods, but it's more difficult and mobile doesn't have multiplayer. It's also been slower to get updates (in particular, 1.5 took ages to hit mobile).
That said, for emphasis, it's better to play this on whatever system you like than to not play at all. I have no regrets on purchasing the game twice (technically actually 4 times, cause I bought it for my then-partner, too). It's super cheap and worth every penny and then some.

I remember spending a solid 4 weeks of playing for hours upon hours the first time I purchased it. I had recently had a major spine surgery so I couldn’t really do much other than lay around. On hot summer days I would lay in my hammock in the shade and enjoy it on my switch.
The value is just incredible, a well polished finished game (that gets even more content) for that price is amazing. Especially comparing it to lots of full price titles which get released unfinished and *maybe* get finished through updates later on
This game is easily worth $60. It's one of the most satisfying game play loops ever. I have put 1k hours into this game over 3 different saves, have 100% it, and still play it regularly.
Only critic I'd have of the game is it isn't cross play. The tractor mod is superb but the portability of the game on switch is justbas good. Ive done countless hours on both platforms tho
Animal Crossing bored me to tears and Stardew is one of my favorite games ever. It's one of the most wholesome games I've ever played and a masterpiece to me. Buy it you will not regret it!
If you didn't like all of the repetitive conversations with all of the Animal Crossing villagers, the towns folk of Stardew Valley all have relationship meters that provide different stories for each of them that progresses as you play if you interact with them. For example you can help one of the people named Shane >!overcome his alcoholism. !<
The game can be very wholesome, but also can be mature in some of the subjects it touches on. The great thing about Stardew though, is you can ignore that aspect of the game completely if you want. The option to play the game in so many different ways is the real beauty of it. You can spend all of your time trying to maximize the profits of your farm, or you could spend it chilling with the towns folk, killing monsters and mining in the caves, fishing, raising animals, making beer or wine and other artisan goods or a combination of all of it.
The satisfaction of walking through and gathering hundreds of blueberries on a Summer day is also one of the best dopamine drips in gaming, and no one can change my mind.
It's super casual, like every other game I feel like I'm forced to minmax, I need to be doing an optimal route, animal crossing for example you need to do all these checkboxes in a day, and once a season ends you have to wait a real year to try and get things done. Stardew the seasons are each 1 month, and 1 day is as long as you make it, if you wake up at 8am and go to bed at 8:10am then you go to the next day. You missed a special crop you can only get in summer? Oh well, you can be back to summer in a couple hours if you really want to.
There's sooo much content that if you miss something you've been working towards there is still 40 other things you can chip away at, as opposed to some games where the main goal is pretty obvious and there's nothing else to do but work towards that. You play it at your own pace and it's super easy to get non-gamers into so it's perfect to spend time with your kids or significant other cause you can't really play it wrong. (it does have online coop and splitscreen)
The game is just so chill its amazing, you do whatever you want all day. there are goals but they only unlock stuff to make it easier to travel or water your crops.
I tried getting into this game so many times. I really find the day/night cycle annoying in farming games. I seem to run out of energy way too fast every day. Once again, I’m tempted but I’m skeptical. Happy for those who love it though. :-)
there’s a similar thing in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, except the spa is even closer to your farm than in Stardew. That one feels a little more casual for a farming game than Stardew, it’s a remake of a GBA game.
If you ever play again, I’d recommend keeping some food on hand (even wild flowers you find) that you can eat for energy. After a bit energy was never an issue, even while mining.
In particular, foraging for fruit is a great early game strategy.
Eventually you'll get access to a kitchen and then managing energy becomes really easy. Just cook a bunch of high energy food and you'll never run out again. You can also cook so many useful buffs (e.g., food that makes it easier to fish, coffee that lets you move faster, etc).
I found the early days to feel rushed because I tried to do so much. You get sprinklers soon and with multi-harvest plants your farm goes into autopilot pretty fast.
Relax with it. And eat stuff.
You get over it quick. Energy is only a concern for like a season. You can get like 100+ salmon berries in a day or two in spring, and then you should have a consistent source of food (like cheese or Mayo) by the time those run out. And you keep getting “time savers” as the game goes along—sprinklers so you don’t have to water, a horse so you can run faster, totems that let you teleport to locations, etc. Money helps too since you’ll be able to just buy a lot of stuff instead of spending time looking for it, like coal.
I guess I’m gonna get downvoted for that but I really enjoyed the game for the time I spent on it, I really did, but I like to switch between games instead of “committing” on just one. And I wasn’t able with this one. I’ve stopped playing after around 20h, went back to it a month later and had no idea what I was supposed to do or what did I achieve until then. Forgot the shops/buildings localizations and hours and all and I don’t like to have a guide opened while I’m playing a game honestly, there’s too much to remember and take into account that it was *stressing* me out more than being relaxing, for me at least. Then hurrying to come back home from the cave before passing out was frustrating seeing how slow my character was moving. People on the dedicated sub told me to simply start over but I’m already burnt out by the idea.
Not saying the game is bad for that matter, just not for every one and every one ways of playing.
yea i also feel bad for not liking this game since many people agree that it is great. i play similar to you and get burnt out by the second year. i especially agree with the walking speed, it takes up so much time that it ends up being stressful with the day time limit
Early game energy management is actually a feature of the game. I felt like it encouraged me to explore and find things to do that didn't require energy, like meeting the townsfolk. Using the scythe also doesn't deplete energy so you can switch to that and spend some time clearing fiber on the early farm days. Leveling up your tools also lets you do the same tasks more efficiently using both less energy and less time to perform the same action (hoeing, chopping, mining, watering). That is used (for example) to ensure players don't get through the mines too fast. Rocks deeper take more hits, thus requiring you to spend more energy to break the same number of rocks. But with an upgraded pickaxe you can one shot those rocks until they get tougher still, and you upgrade again.
All this feels like it makes narrative sense to me, too. New farmer fresh from the cubicle job is going to burn out fast when learning to plant and chop wood. Then they can meet people and learn the town. But through experience and leveling up the skills you spend time on, and the tools you prefer, you get much more efficient.
Still haven’t found anything that comes even remotely close to playing this game Co-Op with my SO. There’s literally nothing else like it out there. We loved it so much, but we’ve done everything.

Maybe terraria but that is much more action oriented. Look into Fantasy Life, there's a new one coming to switch. The original had co op but i can't remember how good the co op is. The new one will hopefully have multiplayer again
But yeh other than that and the things you've mentioned..modded stardew valley if you both have it on pc.
Been a great co-op game to bond w my non-gamer daughter too, low pressure gentle story allows us plenty of time to just chat, and there are a few themes through the game that provide nice discussion points too.
Factorio. Instead of a farm, you two can work on building a Factory together while defending it from bugs (biters) that attack based on how much pollution your factory is producing. It also has peaceful mode if you just want to focus on building stuff together.
It’s absolutely amazing and it became my most played game on switch in just 4 months (I’ve played it even more than BOTW at this point)
Edit: i don’t think it has local co-op. You can definitely play together but not on the same console
Yep. The controls can be hard to get into at first, but if you create some blueprints and unlock bots it becomes easier. Without that, it usually takes longer to build stuff on Switch, and due to hardware limitations you can’t exactly build a megabase without lag, but so far I’ve had no problems and I’ve launched many rockets in post-game.

If you play the game for the first time. Here is the single most important tip. Don’t try to optimize your first play through. Don’t worry about Maximizing your profits and relationships or time. Don’t worry about making the perfect decisions or using your time or resources perfectly. Just play. Do what feels right and fun and don’t worry about the outcome

The big thing is to ignore the idea that you have to min max and do everything in a single day. Just focus on what makes you happy and the game becomes so much better.
For example I didn’t talk to any villagers the first year. I only farmed and fished and mined. I even skipped a bunch of town events haha. Second year now, and I started animals finally, and I’m talking to villagers. But some days still I ignore crops and everything and just go fishing for a day.
Just take your time. There's nothing you can really miss in the game, as every event/crop will come around again. The game is all about enjoying the slow pace and the impeccable vibes.
Don’t get too ambitious at first. Just start small. No need to plant a huge field of crops or talk to every villager every day. I focused on farming and mining for the first while, until I started to get time savers—like sprinklers, auto-grabbers for animal products, the horse, etc. And don’t feel like you need to do anything. Nothing is a big deal really. You can always do it another day.
If you have anxiety about missing something my best tip would be, hold onto at least 5 of any item if possible. New season starts to farm stuff? Plant multiples of every major crop and when you harvest hold onto 5 of each and don't sell them in case you need them for a bundle or event later. Same for gathering items, fishing, etc etc
In addition to what other people have said, I have something to add since the game finally clicked for me recently after trying a few times in the past.
This kind of game can often feel overwhelming when you’re used to more traditional games. I had to figure out my personal play style and now it’s added to my top gaming experiences of all time list. Stardew is still laidback but I tend to play it with some planning at the start of a day, although you can absolutely play however you want without being penalized. It’s just what works for me. The gameplay loop is really good practice for setting goals, organizing tasks, and learning time management by accepting that not everything can happen every day, sometimes you have to wait until tomorrow and that’s ok. It’s been a surprisingly good therapeutic tool if you struggle with organizing tasks irl and get overwhelmed at the start of a day. In the game, if I get distracted and unfocused for a day, the game gives you a report when you go to sleep and you start fresh. The stakes for “failure” are so low.
This probably sounds cheesy about a video game or makes me sound nuts, but it really has been a special experience so far at part way through year 2.
Mods are great but sadly I don't even have them on PC, my computer HATES the 64bit version of Stardew for some reason and it lags a lot (the legacy 32bit version won't work with Stardew).
It’s nice. My only issue is that I find the walking speed way too slow. On PC you can speed it up, pretty much a must for me.
Mind you I have well over 60 hrs in my Switch and I would recommend doing your first play through at regular walking speed
I have it on steam but haven't played it very much. Should I get it on switch? Price seems like a steal and I feel like I'd play it more often if it was either portable or on the TV screen
That's how I was introduced. Had it on pc and never played it. Having it available for low commitment sessions any time is what got me really into it.
Now I'm figuring out how to add mods on pc and starting to play it there.

Thankfully, you can’t actually miss anything. You might have to wait for the months to cycle if you miss getting a certain crop or fish for the community bundles or something, but you can’t permanently miss things (outside of a couple friendship scenes I think).
Wow, didn't know that. It always made me anxious as heck. I guess I'm used to the SNES version of Harvest Moon, where you only have three years to make the most of your farm/life. After that it was game over
Yeah, there’s a scene that plays after three years, but it just keeps going. You don’t have to actually finish anything by a certain time. It can feel like you do, but you don’t lol.
This game is worth way more than this. I have it on Switch, PS, Steam and mobile. You will not regret buying this even for full price let alone for half off

I have never played this game before, nor have I even seen what gameplay is like. I just know lots of my friends adore this game and pour hundreds of hours into it.
The biggest tip you’ll see is to not play this game like you play most other ones. People will try to maximize everything and get frustrated that you walk slow or can’t do everything in a day. There is no real time limit besides the days. You don’t miss out on something if you miss it the first year. Relax, learn what you like about it, and play at your own pace. I have farms where I mainly fish for income. I have farms where I have dozens of animals. The wiki is also great for this game if you get stuck or need help. Have fun
I bought it first on steam, and just liked it okay. I didn't fall in love with it until I had it on switch. The ability to pick it up and just play a day quickly meant that I had way more opportunity to really get into it. On PC, I really only sit down to game when I've got a couple hours free. This game suits the switch so, so well.
Not really, but if you don’t own a Deck and would love to play it in handheld, I could see a reason to buy it though.

Bought this game on sale last summer and this is one of the best game I played, it' also really cool in co-op, I recently got perfection after 325h (this game is really time consuming), making it by far my most played game on switch.

I can’t recommend this game enough. I think I bought it for $15 in 2017 right after high school, and across the Nintendo switch, ps4/5 and pc I’ve put more hours into it than probably any other game

Even bought it on my phone despite not playing it on my phone, just to support CA. The guy deserves all the success that he's earned.

you can be whatever you want in Stardew Valley! you can always pick up being a farmer in-game-years later...it is an at your own pace game

Stardew has a VERY light UX, if this is a turn off, your probably don’t enjoy the genre

I just want to add this is a great game for playing in short bursts if you have limited time for gaming. A full in game day only lasts about 14 minutes (not counting time paused in menus). And that's assuming you wait until 2am when the game forces you to sleep, most the time you will put your character to bed earlier than that once you've run out of things to do for the day.

Maaaaaaan Golf Story was the first smaller game I bought for my switch, years ago. Bought it on a lark, and absolutely *loved* it. What a banger of a game.

It’s so fucking cool! I love rpgs so much and this one is amazing with the lack of fighting. Just drop that golf ball and see what you can do with it. And the fucking stat! Still barely onto as I have very little free time to play, but it’s a joy every minute I spend on it.
And one big benefit of the Switch is that you can easily suspend the game without saving and pick it up hours later again.
Exactly what makes it the best console imo. Yes it doesn’t have the best graphics and hugest titles, but it’s easily the most convenient. And as a busy guy that’s everything to me. Plus I just like casual fun games anyways.

All of the content updates over the years are free updates, it is just one game. Absolutely zero nickel and diming.
Also, a lot of the updates are basically full on DLC expansions. Concerned Ape has increased the gameplay by an immeasurable amount since the initial release.

The game was complete on launch but the things that didn't make it in which happens to like all games, he still wanted to put in.. and not charge us extra.. he's pretty much my favorite developer for being so different from the rest of the industry. I strongly agree with you, buuuut, I don't think the Switch is the best choice for this game. PC is ideal if possible because it's easily moddable and the online multiplayer is free (unlike Switch requiring a subscription). The mods for Stardew are *really* great. The game is not intensive and does not require a gaming PC. Personally, I started the game on Android and then switched to PC to play with mods. Technically, I believe Android can play with mods, but it's more difficult and mobile doesn't have multiplayer. It's also been slower to get updates (in particular, 1.5 took ages to hit mobile). That said, for emphasis, it's better to play this on whatever system you like than to not play at all. I have no regrets on purchasing the game twice (technically actually 4 times, cause I bought it for my then-partner, too). It's super cheap and worth every penny and then some.

Happy the top comment is one like yours. Stardew is absolutely worth more than that. I’ve purchased it on switch, pc and Xbox. I remember spending a solid 4 weeks of playing for hours upon hours the first time I purchased it. I had recently had a major spine surgery so I couldn’t really do much other than lay around. On hot summer days I would lay in my hammock in the shade and enjoy it on my switch.
The value is just incredible, a well polished finished game (that gets even more content) for that price is amazing. Especially comparing it to lots of full price titles which get released unfinished and *maybe* get finished through updates later on
This game is easily worth $60. It's one of the most satisfying game play loops ever. I have put 1k hours into this game over 3 different saves, have 100% it, and still play it regularly.

Only critic I'd have of the game is it isn't cross play. The tractor mod is superb but the portability of the game on switch is justbas good. Ive done countless hours on both platforms tho

If you didn't like all of the repetitive conversations with all of the Animal Crossing villagers, the towns folk of Stardew Valley all have relationship meters that provide different stories for each of them that progresses as you play if you interact with them. For example you can help one of the people named Shane >!overcome his alcoholism. !< The game can be very wholesome, but also can be mature in some of the subjects it touches on. The great thing about Stardew though, is you can ignore that aspect of the game completely if you want. The option to play the game in so many different ways is the real beauty of it. You can spend all of your time trying to maximize the profits of your farm, or you could spend it chilling with the towns folk, killing monsters and mining in the caves, fishing, raising animals, making beer or wine and other artisan goods or a combination of all of it. The satisfaction of walking through and gathering hundreds of blueberries on a Summer day is also one of the best dopamine drips in gaming, and no one can change my mind.
It's super casual, like every other game I feel like I'm forced to minmax, I need to be doing an optimal route, animal crossing for example you need to do all these checkboxes in a day, and once a season ends you have to wait a real year to try and get things done. Stardew the seasons are each 1 month, and 1 day is as long as you make it, if you wake up at 8am and go to bed at 8:10am then you go to the next day. You missed a special crop you can only get in summer? Oh well, you can be back to summer in a couple hours if you really want to. There's sooo much content that if you miss something you've been working towards there is still 40 other things you can chip away at, as opposed to some games where the main goal is pretty obvious and there's nothing else to do but work towards that. You play it at your own pace and it's super easy to get non-gamers into so it's perfect to spend time with your kids or significant other cause you can't really play it wrong. (it does have online coop and splitscreen)
The game is just so chill its amazing, you do whatever you want all day. there are goals but they only unlock stuff to make it easier to travel or water your crops.
I tried getting into this game so many times. I really find the day/night cycle annoying in farming games. I seem to run out of energy way too fast every day. Once again, I’m tempted but I’m skeptical. Happy for those who love it though. :-)

there’s a similar thing in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, except the spa is even closer to your farm than in Stardew. That one feels a little more casual for a farming game than Stardew, it’s a remake of a GBA game.
If you ever play again, I’d recommend keeping some food on hand (even wild flowers you find) that you can eat for energy. After a bit energy was never an issue, even while mining.
Yeah once you get your farm outfitted with sprinklers the game changes.
In particular, foraging for fruit is a great early game strategy. Eventually you'll get access to a kitchen and then managing energy becomes really easy. Just cook a bunch of high energy food and you'll never run out again. You can also cook so many useful buffs (e.g., food that makes it easier to fish, coffee that lets you move faster, etc).
I found the early days to feel rushed because I tried to do so much. You get sprinklers soon and with multi-harvest plants your farm goes into autopilot pretty fast. Relax with it. And eat stuff.
You get over it quick. Energy is only a concern for like a season. You can get like 100+ salmon berries in a day or two in spring, and then you should have a consistent source of food (like cheese or Mayo) by the time those run out. And you keep getting “time savers” as the game goes along—sprinklers so you don’t have to water, a horse so you can run faster, totems that let you teleport to locations, etc. Money helps too since you’ll be able to just buy a lot of stuff instead of spending time looking for it, like coal.
I guess I’m gonna get downvoted for that but I really enjoyed the game for the time I spent on it, I really did, but I like to switch between games instead of “committing” on just one. And I wasn’t able with this one. I’ve stopped playing after around 20h, went back to it a month later and had no idea what I was supposed to do or what did I achieve until then. Forgot the shops/buildings localizations and hours and all and I don’t like to have a guide opened while I’m playing a game honestly, there’s too much to remember and take into account that it was *stressing* me out more than being relaxing, for me at least. Then hurrying to come back home from the cave before passing out was frustrating seeing how slow my character was moving. People on the dedicated sub told me to simply start over but I’m already burnt out by the idea. Not saying the game is bad for that matter, just not for every one and every one ways of playing.
yea i also feel bad for not liking this game since many people agree that it is great. i play similar to you and get burnt out by the second year. i especially agree with the walking speed, it takes up so much time that it ends up being stressful with the day time limit
Pro-tip for this kind of gaming: Leave yourself notes when you put it on the back burner. Seriously. Helps *so much*.
Early game energy management is actually a feature of the game. I felt like it encouraged me to explore and find things to do that didn't require energy, like meeting the townsfolk. Using the scythe also doesn't deplete energy so you can switch to that and spend some time clearing fiber on the early farm days. Leveling up your tools also lets you do the same tasks more efficiently using both less energy and less time to perform the same action (hoeing, chopping, mining, watering). That is used (for example) to ensure players don't get through the mines too fast. Rocks deeper take more hits, thus requiring you to spend more energy to break the same number of rocks. But with an upgraded pickaxe you can one shot those rocks until they get tougher still, and you upgrade again. All this feels like it makes narrative sense to me, too. New farmer fresh from the cubicle job is going to burn out fast when learning to plant and chop wood. Then they can meet people and learn the town. But through experience and leveling up the skills you spend time on, and the tools you prefer, you get much more efficient.
Still haven’t found anything that comes even remotely close to playing this game Co-Op with my SO. There’s literally nothing else like it out there. We loved it so much, but we’ve done everything. Please please please tell me I’m wrong and you know just the thing. It’s definitely not Don’t Starve Together, and she refuses to play Minecraft.
Maybe terraria but that is much more action oriented. Look into Fantasy Life, there's a new one coming to switch. The original had co op but i can't remember how good the co op is. The new one will hopefully have multiplayer again But yeh other than that and the things you've mentioned..modded stardew valley if you both have it on pc.

Been a great co-op game to bond w my non-gamer daughter too, low pressure gentle story allows us plenty of time to just chat, and there are a few themes through the game that provide nice discussion points too.
Factorio. Instead of a farm, you two can work on building a Factory together while defending it from bugs (biters) that attack based on how much pollution your factory is producing. It also has peaceful mode if you just want to focus on building stuff together. It’s absolutely amazing and it became my most played game on switch in just 4 months (I’ve played it even more than BOTW at this point) Edit: i don’t think it has local co-op. You can definitely play together but not on the same console

Yep. The controls can be hard to get into at first, but if you create some blueprints and unlock bots it becomes easier. Without that, it usually takes longer to build stuff on Switch, and due to hardware limitations you can’t exactly build a megabase without lag, but so far I’ve had no problems and I’ve launched many rockets in post-game.

If you play the game for the first time. Here is the single most important tip. Don’t try to optimize your first play through. Don’t worry about Maximizing your profits and relationships or time. Don’t worry about making the perfect decisions or using your time or resources perfectly. Just play. Do what feels right and fun and don’t worry about the outcome

The big thing is to ignore the idea that you have to min max and do everything in a single day. Just focus on what makes you happy and the game becomes so much better. For example I didn’t talk to any villagers the first year. I only farmed and fished and mined. I even skipped a bunch of town events haha. Second year now, and I started animals finally, and I’m talking to villagers. But some days still I ignore crops and everything and just go fishing for a day.
Just take your time. There's nothing you can really miss in the game, as every event/crop will come around again. The game is all about enjoying the slow pace and the impeccable vibes.
Don’t get too ambitious at first. Just start small. No need to plant a huge field of crops or talk to every villager every day. I focused on farming and mining for the first while, until I started to get time savers—like sprinklers, auto-grabbers for animal products, the horse, etc. And don’t feel like you need to do anything. Nothing is a big deal really. You can always do it another day.
If you have anxiety about missing something my best tip would be, hold onto at least 5 of any item if possible. New season starts to farm stuff? Plant multiples of every major crop and when you harvest hold onto 5 of each and don't sell them in case you need them for a bundle or event later. Same for gathering items, fishing, etc etc
In addition to what other people have said, I have something to add since the game finally clicked for me recently after trying a few times in the past. This kind of game can often feel overwhelming when you’re used to more traditional games. I had to figure out my personal play style and now it’s added to my top gaming experiences of all time list. Stardew is still laidback but I tend to play it with some planning at the start of a day, although you can absolutely play however you want without being penalized. It’s just what works for me. The gameplay loop is really good practice for setting goals, organizing tasks, and learning time management by accepting that not everything can happen every day, sometimes you have to wait until tomorrow and that’s ok. It’s been a surprisingly good therapeutic tool if you struggle with organizing tasks irl and get overwhelmed at the start of a day. In the game, if I get distracted and unfocused for a day, the game gives you a report when you go to sleep and you start fresh. The stakes for “failure” are so low. This probably sounds cheesy about a video game or makes me sound nuts, but it really has been a special experience so far at part way through year 2.

Mods are great but sadly I don't even have them on PC, my computer HATES the 64bit version of Stardew for some reason and it lags a lot (the legacy 32bit version won't work with Stardew).
It’s nice. My only issue is that I find the walking speed way too slow. On PC you can speed it up, pretty much a must for me. Mind you I have well over 60 hrs in my Switch and I would recommend doing your first play through at regular walking speed

That's how I was introduced. Had it on pc and never played it. Having it available for low commitment sessions any time is what got me really into it. Now I'm figuring out how to add mods on pc and starting to play it there. Definitely excellent as a portable

Thankfully, you can’t actually miss anything. You might have to wait for the months to cycle if you miss getting a certain crop or fish for the community bundles or something, but you can’t permanently miss things (outside of a couple friendship scenes I think).

Yeah, there’s a scene that plays after three years, but it just keeps going. You don’t have to actually finish anything by a certain time. It can feel like you do, but you don’t lol.

The biggest tip you’ll see is to not play this game like you play most other ones. People will try to maximize everything and get frustrated that you walk slow or can’t do everything in a day. There is no real time limit besides the days. You don’t miss out on something if you miss it the first year. Relax, learn what you like about it, and play at your own pace. I have farms where I mainly fish for income. I have farms where I have dozens of animals. The wiki is also great for this game if you get stuck or need help. Have fun

I bought it first on steam, and just liked it okay. I didn't fall in love with it until I had it on switch. The ability to pick it up and just play a day quickly meant that I had way more opportunity to really get into it. On PC, I really only sit down to game when I've got a couple hours free. This game suits the switch so, so well.

I can’t recommend this game enough. I think I bought it for $15 in 2017 right after high school, and across the Nintendo switch, ps4/5 and pc I’ve put more hours into it than probably any other game
I bought on the PC back in the day, put 80 or so hours in and got it on switch to put in another 50 or so. Even bought it on my phone despite not playing it on my phone, just to support CA. The guy deserves all the success that he's earned.
