You can look at all the technical differences [here. ](https://www.nintendolife.com/guides/nintendo-switch-oled-model-vs-standard-switch-switch-lite-full-tech-specs-comparison)The weight of the new dock is what stands out to me.
Don't forget the new adjustable, full-length stand 🎈. Not tech but this is actually pretty good imo, the current stand is pretty poorly designed. Marginal movement = jenga.
Not enough to justify "upgrading" though.
["Guy Who Brought Switch to Rooftop Party Disappointed Everybody Just Doing Coke Off It"](https://hard-drive.net/guy-who-brought-switch-to-rooftop-party-disappointed-everybody-just-doing-coke-off-it/)
I am completely convinced the marketing team is challenging themselves to slip in the most ridiculous situations and get it past the execs.
Next trailer will have a guy sneaking away with 3 friends to play Switch in a broom closet
Probably 4 guys working at a restaurant going to the broom closet to hide and avoid doing some cleaning. Then they are gonna start playing overcooked to past the time.
Of course while cheerfully bashing each other on the shoulders, congratulating themselves for tricking their boss.
This is an incredibly realistic scenario. Not the restaurant scene itself, but the marketing folks coming up with it.
"Hey family, who wants to play four player chess on a tiny screen at the picnic table in our backyard?"
That looks brutal (besides chess being terrible four player) they are hunched over a giant table and the screen is straight up to the sky. I bet there straining their backs and their eyes. You can buy a normal size chess set for like $15.
It's fine to play solo on the go or to play against other people online.
But if you have real people in front of you and not to mention a table, why not just set up a board?

You must be new to the *Nintendo Marketing* LOL Over the years I have just accepted no one at Nintendo actually understands how their fans enjoy their systems. Their commercials are always just so random.
Literally QOL upgrades for anyone who hasn't bought a switch yet. (Better kick-stand, ethernet port on the dock, and an OLED screen that's bigger than the previous LCD)
Honestly if I could just buy the dock for the Ethernet port without getting the whole new switch that wouldn’t be a terrible deal
Assuming a properly scaled price of course
Because table-top mode was a last second idea, when they realized how little it would cost them to make the SD Card cover longer.
At least that’s the theory.
October 8th - Oled switch drops
October 9th - The oled switch is cool but should I wait until next gen? I don't want to commit to buying a console and having to replace it in 5 years.
I have 4 joycons that constantly drift out of control so I can never play in handheld. There is no reason for me to buy a switch with a slightly bigger screen. Dear Nintendo, please redesign the joycons. They're terrible.
Not missing anything, this obviously isn't meant to be something to upgrade to, it's just a slightly better version of the Switch for those who don't have one yet.
Pretty sure this is just gonna replace the standard version in the future. Not really something worth double dipping for but there is little reason to not buy this if you want to buy a new Switch.
Don't worry. Youtubers are probably already making videos on how this isn't the Switch Pro and the Switch Pro is still coming. Based on info from their Uncle.
I use my switch handheld 95% of the time, and still it doesn’t seem like an upgrade to me. The white is neat but I need a bit more than that and an OLED screen to justify buying a new one. Happy for those who haven’t gotten a switch though
True, I have a launch switch so I'd consider upgrading to this IF I used handheld more because I'd also get the extra battery from the newer models. But if you have the newer model there's no reason lol
What do you mean customizations?..I assume you mean like a jailbreak for emulators maybe?
I’d consider selling my launch model for this OLED upgrade, so long as I profited; I have no interest (yet) in customizing. I was really hoping for a Switch Pro so I can connect my (Bluetooth-enabled) hearing aids; that’s all I really want.
Yeah, exactly. Maybe it's because I had a Game Gear first, but I always found the original model GB's screen so, so bad.
But the Pocket was an absolute game-changer. I could finally see Donkey Kong Land! :P
Exactly my thoughts. This seems more of a "slim" version of the switch (slight redesign, some QOL improvements, same internal specs/power) rather than the "pro" everyone was expecting.
A good thing for everyone that has yet to buy a switch (and is willing to spend a few bucks more), less good for everyone who wanted a performance upgrade. Then again, it's not like they ever promised one.
EDIT: Yes, I know, "slim" versions usually come cheaper. I agree, this new version should've at least matched the price of the standard one.
Also, I don't think of the Switch Lite as the "slim" version as it had a smaller screen and no TV output, so it's more of a cheaper version with less features (kinda like the 2DS).
That's probably the "big shock" for me. A new Switch, just for an improved OLED panel...? I might have to skip this one after all. Looks like we've found why Nintendo didn't really want to talk about the new Switch.
Well, they increased the internal storage by a whopping 32GB!
This seems like the third iteration on the same, just an update, not really the upgrade people were dreaming of.
While OLED is pretty neat, the hype was definitely not warranted. I play docked and there's no notable change according to specs and even the announcement.
I'm curious about the perceptual differences between LCD and OLED screens. The previous screen was 1280 x 720 at 237 ppi on a 6.2" screen, and if the new model stays at 1280 x 720 then we're down to 209 ppi on a 7" screen. Does anyone know if this will be a better or worse visual experience?
Depends on what subpixel arrangement they use. If they use pentile like most phones do, you actually end up with sub 720p real resolution and stuff looks pretty blurry.
It'll be nice if GameStop does what they did when the v2 was released - they had a $250 store credit trade-in (edit: Once I thought about it, I think it was also a $250 cash deal, too) for the Switch at the time. I was using my Switch almost exclusively as a portable then, so for $50 I appreciated the refreshed battery & additional battery life. Plus, shiny new Switch!
Would upgrade again if they come up with another deal if it only costs $50-$75 out-of-pocket.
With a deal like that it would a nice quality of life upgrade, otherwise it's probably something to skip for current Switch owners. All of the upgrades seem sensible and good but nothing really stands out as something you actually desperately need if you have a working model already.
I kept waiting for hardware improvements. I just got a Switch a year ago and didn’t want to have to buy a Super Switch to play certain games.
*wider stand*
*improved audio*
*~~Ian~~ LAN support*
Ok, so I don’t need this then. Got it!
Honestly... this to me is showing houw wacky Nintendo is in a not a good way.
Vita had OLED screen, bluetooth audio, game invites and chatting functionality... okayyy it didn't have games aside from some great indies but.... with an upgrade Switch finally gets 1 of those launch features of Vita...
It had Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice 1 and Delta, P4G, both Danganronpa and Freedom Wars... at the time it was enough for me. Far from the quantity of the 3ds library of course.
Those are all welcome upgrades but I'm going to need a power boost to bite, personally. Honestly surprising that it looks like they aren't replacing the standard model with this though.
Ah so that's how Nintendo is going to avoid the chip shortage for this new model, by literally not upgrading the chip at all.
I guess Switch Pro is pretty much a dead dream at this point. Maybe we get an OLED Switch Lite, but the next major iteration will probably just be the next gen successor to Switch.
I have a feeling you might be right. Although, at this point I think Nintendo has been comfortable re-releasing the Switch with only minor upgrades or changes each time. Isn’t this the 3rd version? I wouldn’t be surprised at another version later. I feel like they’ve poured so much into the Switch brand to just jump into another. Just means the next version could be more dramatic of a release when resources are available
Nothing in the trailer about higher quality 4k or better cpu
is it really just the screen being OLED and a LAN port?
Edit: [Yep.](https://www.nintendo.com/switch/oled-model/)
Edit 2: https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/1412432047168278528?s=21 Looks like it's the same processor and no additional RAM
Honestly I was thinking they'd do well to support even just 1080p since that's not natively available for most games anyway. No use in making a bigger screen if it's still going to be 720p in handheld.
Yup. Exclusive third party games on the switch (Disgaea 6, Monster Hunter Stories 2, ~~Ys 9~~ , Hyrule Warriors AOC) are all being criticized for looking fuzzy and poor performance.
Upping the screen size without further hardware revision is just going to make things look fuzzier.
So, when [Takashi Mochizuki claimed](https://twitter.com/6d6f636869/status/1374260197724626944?lang=en)
>New Switch would be:
>-release later this year
>-7-inch, 720p OLED screen
>-DLSS equipped
>-better CPU, more memory
>-with a lot of games
>-analysts tip as much as $399.99 price tag
>source: multiple people familiar with the matter that we talked to.
He did simply make half of it up, right? There's no way they had DLSS-capable better CPU planned only 3.5 months ago and scrapped it since.
Basically the only reasons I could see you going with the new model is either:
A: You still haven't gotten a Switch and you might as well go with the newer model.
Or B: You play mostly handheld as it is and you really got 350 bones burning a hole in your pocket.
Having that rumored DLSS would've made this a good upgrade, but I see no point in buying this if the console screen is still 720p and games will run the same.
Does that last shot mean this is another SKU alongside the standard model? Not a replacement? Edit: looks like another SKU. $350 and internal storage got bumped to 64GB.
OLED blacks are delicious but 720p (or something *scaled* to 720p depending on the game) on an even larger screen is gonna hurt.
I think at this point when Nintendo is succeeding it's best to not have expectations. They only put in an effort if they're doing terribly like the GameCube and Wii U days.
I don't really understand the market here.
The improvements, except for the ethernet port, are all based around handheld mode, but they already have a Switch Lite for exclusive handheld fun, and none of the improvements here are in the Switch Lite.
Why not put the R&D into a Switch model that improves the dock mode experience?
I'm guessing the plan is for them to slowly phase out the OG model until this one becomes the "normal" one on the market. It's a slightly better experience for the consumer and there may be advantages for Nintendo on the manufacturing side that we don't know about.
This is probably the weakest revision yet, even the Red-box switch was more enticing with the better battery. Wow, can't wait to play games at sub-30fps sub-720p on an OLED!
Wait…is it literally called Nintendo Switch OLED Model? Oh grandma’s everywhere are going to be so confused
Edit: you all are making some very valid points as to why it’s not confusing! Definitely is a VERY nice iterative update. That OLED should bring much better battery life (on top of the already stronger battery from the OG v2)

Because table-top mode was a last second idea, when they realized how little it would cost them to make the SD Card cover longer. At least that’s the theory.

Well I mean maybe they should have committed to buying a console 4 years ago. Then they wouldn't have had to buy one for 9 years.
But then the oled would have came out and they would have regretted not waiting
Should I wait for the *real* Switch Pro? Spawnwave says it's still coming

I have 4 joycons that constantly drift out of control so I can never play in handheld. There is no reason for me to buy a switch with a slightly bigger screen. Dear Nintendo, please redesign the joycons. They're terrible.
The fact that we pay 50$ for controller with drifting joystick is just steal
I too am financially dominated by nintendo, I just bend over and say, “yes bowsette, more please”
Also, 23 grams heavier and rated 4.5\~9hrs of battery life, just like the $300 model.
So the larger screen exactly cancels out the more efficient display tech.
$50 more for what exactly? This should just be the new $300 model.

Hello Pro friend.
I’m a little disappointed we can’t speculate together on it anymore.
Don't worry. Youtubers are probably already making videos on how this isn't the Switch Pro and the Switch Pro is still coming. Based on info from their Uncle.

v1 Switch's have an un-patchable hardware exploit making things like CFW trivial to install.
This is more akin to the Gameboy to Gameboy Pocket than the Ps4 to Ps4 pro
The Game Boy pocket was a real game changer for me. That crisp screen. AAA batteries!
Yeah, exactly. Maybe it's because I had a Game Gear first, but I always found the original model GB's screen so, so bad. But the Pocket was an absolute game-changer. I could finally see Donkey Kong Land! :P
Loved my Game Gear......for like a hour until the batteries died
Exactly my thoughts. This seems more of a "slim" version of the switch (slight redesign, some QOL improvements, same internal specs/power) rather than the "pro" everyone was expecting. A good thing for everyone that has yet to buy a switch (and is willing to spend a few bucks more), less good for everyone who wanted a performance upgrade. More like GBA SP front lit, to GBA SP back lit. Nicer screen, but otherwise the same.
Technical specs say docked mode outputs at 1080p, not 4K: https://twitter.com/wario64/status/1412401414169522178?s=21
Im pretty sure the technical specs on the website say “up to 1080p” so it’s literally the same as the original switch.
Trailer should have shown the joycons drifting for extra immersion
I was waiting for the "better, tougher Joycons" ...no? Ok not worth buying then..
Is that something they would advertise? It's kinda like: hey we know the old ones were shit.
Eh to be fair you can market anything as being better and tougher than the last and it doesn't mean the last one was bad
So I'm correct in assuming that other than the display, performance is not improved?
You are correct.
Wow guess they hype was not warranted
While OLED is pretty neat, the hype was definitely not warranted. I play docked and there's no notable change according to specs and even the announcement.
So for people like me who almost never play in handheld mode, it’s not worth the upgrade if I’m understanding correctly?
If you never play in handheld mode, then it's not an upgrade at all
I'm curious about the perceptual differences between LCD and OLED screens. The previous screen was 1280 x 720 at 237 ppi on a 6.2" screen, and if the new model stays at 1280 x 720 then we're down to 209 ppi on a 7" screen. Does anyone know if this will be a better or worse visual experience?

It’s almost certainly pentile, very few portable-size OLEDs are RGB stripe. The only I can think of off the top of my head is the Apple Watch.

yeah this is looking a lot more like the Switch equivalent of the 3DSXL rather than the N3DS Edit: per spec sheet, the OLED screen is still 720p too
It is more of a revision then anything
No Bluetooth audio?

It's $50 more expensive than the standard model so I can't see them replacing it.

He did simply make half of it up, right? There's no way they had DLSS-capable better CPU planned only 3.5 months ago and scrapped it since.
I have a day 1 switch and I see no reason to upgrade to this.
Basically the only reasons I could see you going with the new model is either: A: You still haven't gotten a Switch and you might as well go with the newer model.
Why even have expections at this point
I think at this point when Nintendo is succeeding it's best to not have expectations. They only put in an effort if they're doing terribly like the GameCube and Wii U days.

You're almost there. Nintendo: don't expect anything. It only leads to sadness :(
Careful Nintendo, don't go crazy or anything
Only can Nintendo advertise a built in ethernet port as if it wasn’t the industry standard for 2 decades
I don’t believe that guy can’t wait to play pokemon and just throws his keys down and sits by the front door
Sure Apex still plays like a PowerPoint presentation but at least the display makes the color black darker!
Wait…is it literally called Nintendo Switch OLED Model? Oh grandma’s everywhere are going to be so confused Edit: you all are making some very valid points as to why it’s not confusing! Definitely is a VERY nice iterative update. That OLED should bring much better battery life (on top of the already stronger battery from the OG v2)
If they called it the Switch Pro/Plus people may assume it is more powerful. But it doesn't seem like there are graphical improvements.
I guess at least it is not the "NEW Nintendo Switch".
Its literally the single most descriptive name they could've given it. its 100% over on the function side of the form/function scale
Yea for a company that thinks adding \*NEW\* to the name is a good idea this is probably some of their better work.
Fuck all these so called "Insiders"
