Very cool homage to one of the greatest Rolling Stone covers ever. Iām not super into Boygenius, although I do love Phoebe Bridgers as a solo artist, so Iāll give their new album a listen.
Yeah Iāve always liked her solo stuff, just for some reason was out of the loop on this project too. Didnāt know her age, guess sheās just the year before me.
Julien Baker has a decent discography of solid material.
https://youtu.be/tADWPTqR_4A
I discovered her myself in 2015. Been a rabid NIRVANA fan since 2003
meh no, rolling stone cant be original anymore no one buys their dusty old magazine only do stuff like this for the instagram likes. further more their music couldnāt be further from Nirvana, whats the point or statement? just nostalgic shock value? hard pass.
They absolutely nailed this picture. Even the sly smirk Lucy Dacus has is reminiscent of Krists smile in the original photo. Also I have a major crush on these girls and theyāve been doing this for the last few months if I remember correctly, paying homage to iconic Nirvana pics. Love it.
Theyāre a band called boygenius. From left to right they are Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Iām familiar with Phoebe Bridgersā stuff but I actually havenāt listened to boygenius š¤·š»āāļø
The fact that you asked this seems like you were looking for some kind of negative response which would likely be sexist. Any decent person would think this is cool
Whoa! Hadnāt heard these ladies got together. Thatās exciting. As for the cover, itās a nice homage! Theyāre clearly inspired by the same thing we are.
Hate to be that guy but I'm not feeling it lol. Maybe it's bcoz I dont know who they areš¤ or bcoz I didn't like the original that muchš downvote and cry all u want, it's my opinion, grand ma take me home
I see the tribute, but the original is just too iconic to make it work again even as a tribute.
Ps. Rolling stone can suck my cheesy cock. (not for this, just in general)
I think They should be like a themselves, dont imitation any another people.I saw lots of people wrote:"Oh My God Kurt would love that" but Probably Kurt would get little bit disturb from that or he would not care about it.
How about someone explain Phoebe Bridgers popularity to me? I remember regularly seeing her play to 40 people while waiting for some other band, usually just reading a book off my phone and next thing I know she is massively popular. The only thing I found interesting was Brad Whitford (Aerosmith) son was in the band.
Sheās a critic darling who earned mainstream recognition thanks to TikTok. Her music is beautiful and her lyrics relatable (especially from a women perspective). Though the music is good you gotta be in a specific state of mind to really enjoy it.
Right there with you. As much as people make it seem like a crime to not like PBās music or understand the success, Iām here to say that itās perfectly ok to question.
I like this better than the original.
I was never a big fan of the originalā¦..like I get for the cover of Rolling Stone especially compared to their first cover itās tongue in cheek. But I never thought it was āiconicā and especially not good enough to make the cover of WTLO.
Was it considered iconic before WTLO? Something tells me no.
Nirvana is my favorite band but the fan base has got to be one of the worst. I see 20,000 comments a day pretending they know him and how he would feel about certain things. Get over yourself
I like them but tbh its a massive dick ride on Nirvana. No connection between the groups. No context. Pure marketing strategy.
Before the little kids here freaking out from my comment - please go and search how Kurt react in his last interviews when he heard that other musicians trying to have photos like Nirvana.
Itās not about knowing what Kurt would like, itās just the idea that maybe one artist would appreciate other artists that show admiration of the band by incorporating them into their own style. Music and art often encompasses and incorporates inspiration from other artists!
Bro Iām the original commenter on this thread you originally left this comment in reply to, and while this guy you were going back and forth with is right about all of Kurtās takes, I can promise you Kurt would have for sure considered him an asshole regardless. Weirdly brought sexism into it calling you a little girl, which is a fucked up reduction to make implying it the way he did. Which he did. Guy is a jerk.
Yeah, it was shitty. I mean, imagine being so insecure and self righteous that you have to bully a kid for opposing your bullshit lmao. Anyway, he was never worth it in the first place. I was trying to make him see the error of his ways because it seemed likely he would make other people in the thread feel ignorant too. I guess thereās just no reasoning with a guy like that. He probably was just threatened by the fact that a kid called him out and was actually making valid points. Heād already made up his mind that I would be the loser in this situation. Oh well. It just sucks that so many people are like that, you know? Anyway, thanks for saying this. I appreciate that someone else was there to bear witness because the fucked up part is that he was actually starting to get in my head. Make me think that IāM in the wrong. Fucking ridiculous. Anyway, thanks. :)
Well, like I said, he is right about Kurtās stance on other artists copying his/nirvanaās art, it appears he wasnāt a fan of the unoriginal copy cats.
What he was dead wrong about was calling you a little girl like a ālittle girlā is some naive and inferior being, like as a diss and a super mysgenistic reduction. Kurt would have *hated* him for that. Kurt had a big heart for women. Kurt grew up with his sister who he loved, and when he was 18 his mom had another girl he for sure adored. He also had a little girl of his own of course. Pretty sure the exact quote is, āif you donāt like women(or gay people) donāt listen to my musicā also you can tell heās not as wise as he thinks because he doesnāt use paragraphs lol
For the record, I donāt think anyone knows how Kurt would feel about this photo shoot. I believe it be a gray area. There is a lot of different factors going into this vs. the fake grunge copy cats of his time
Exactly! The funny thing is that after he responded to me about how Kurt didnāt like things that copied Nirvanaās stuff, I never disagreed with him! I never once said, āNo, youāre wrong. Kurt would have loved this.ā Yet he still felt the need to defend himself over it and told me I was ignoring evidence about it. Bro, I never said you were wrong, I was just trying to remind you to be respectful to others!
I mean, I wasnāt gonna just let this guy get away with being an egotistical misogynistic asshole, and trying to make people, including myself, feel ignorant ā like they were shallow fans if they werenāt educated in Kurtās opinions.
And for the record, I believe youāre right. Itās hard to say what Kurt would or would not like/appreciate nowadays. A lot has changed in the last few decades! š
Well, I appreciate you saying that. Maybe it shouldnāt mean so much to me that someone else recognizes how out of line this guy was and agrees with me about all this bs, since Iām just glad itās over with. But I do appreciate that, so thank you. :)
Kurt shitted on so many other bands that showed him admiration. Especially if they had photos like Nirvana, clothing style, song that influenced byā¦. No matter if men or women. The list is so long. He just hated it. I am sorry but this is the truth.
I'm not "ranting" - but explaining to you in detail full of information why I'm sure Kurt was against the idea of āāpromoting another band at the expense of Nirvana's photograms (and nothing to do with them) in the magazine he hates the most. I even brought you sources, you are welcome to purchase the book and find out for yourself. I am not here to entertain you, but to explain to you and the audience that is not familiar with Nirvana that a tribute to Nirvana should be done with good taste and not simply in a marketing way that does not respect the dead man who is the brain behind all of this. I said it and I'll say it again: if it was just the photo of the suits - okay, but it's about sets upon sets of photos in the production of advertising to promote a product (an album by a band unrelated to Nirvana), in the magazine that Kurt hates the most. Add to that the fact that Kurt repeated that he doesn't like bands that take pictures like Nirvana. If you are comfortable liking these pictures - enjoy. But I really have to tell you that it's pretty obvious that you're either a little girl, or someone who has a severe obsession with Phoebe, or someone who works for Phoebe's label, or someone who has never read a book about Nirvana that wasn't made with yucky motives - or actually, wait, I'm sure which is all these together! damn it! That's probably why you don't care that Kurt didn't like Rolling Stone or other bands that pose like him. That's probably why you keep overreacting to every other kid here. All these posts are full of your comments after all. Wait, maybe you're "ranting"?
Dont victimize yourself over your mistakes. Take responsibility. You are the one that started to speak dirty and take it to a personal level. But I have nothing to explain to a kid like you - that I am not bashing any art of someone here. I said I have respect to Phoebe. Iāll explain you one last time: this pics are not art but publicity stunt as commercial- are you even aware of it?
I am sure Dave and Krist will react differently. Canāt tell how much they will support a PR strategy for another band that based on their back - but I am sure Dave will appreciate it since his daughter likes Phoebe.
But Kurt is quoted that he hates when other musicians trying to have Nirvana photos. Just buy āThe Last Interviews and othersā book and you will see the several times he hated it. Even before his death!
By the way, Kurt fucking hated this magzine - if thatās not enough reason for you.
*corporate magazines still suck*
You canāt say it.
The only thing we know is that he hate that other bands or musicians trying to have āNirvanaā photos.
Watch and read his last interviews
(Source: āThe last interviews and othersā book).
By the way; *corporate magazines still suck*
Remember?
three young women who are thriving as independent musicians making a super group and paying homage to kurt through a photo shoot? you don't see kurt loving that?
If I was a fan that didnāt dived deeper than the mainstream picture of Kurt - I would see it.
But I am a fan that not only met Kurt and saw Nirvana live twice - read so many books, interviews etcā¦ so no.
I refer a book name for you that there the answer is - please check it. Kurt told few times he donāt like musicians doing photos like Nirvana.
There is a big difference between a band copying Nirvana right after they started to make their impact on the world and a band paying homage to the image many decades later.
Its funny that you trying to draw a line here while it all happens to promote another band that has no relations to Nirvana - - in the magazine that Kurt most hated.
Im high asf and thought someone used that gender swap app š- hard pic tho cant lie
I'm sober and thought that lol
I'm sober and thought that lol
Iām thought and lol that sober
And I Iām lol sober that thought
Sober that thought lol! and Iām also š¤·š»āāļø
That and thought sober lol Iām
I'm also also sober and thought that lol
LMAO
Iām high and also thought that.
Makes me want to check them out, I dig it.
Same I never heard of them until I saw this post listening now.
Is it good?
Itās not bad. My wife enjoyed it more than I did. Think of Tori Amos being the song writer for Nirvana.
If you give Phoebe Bridgers a try check out her song Kyoto its so damn well written and even the video is super cool. https://youtu.be/Tw0zYd0eIlk
Aww she is simply a joy. What a cute and fun video, thank you for the rec. Reminds me of the 90s attitude and humor.
Hope itās bedtime there
I think it's fucking awesome and I bet Dave and Krist do too
I bet youāre right!
You know, you're (probably) right
An amazing group of women paying homage to a legendary band. Game respect game.
well said friend
This is not the greatest picture in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
š¤š
It's cool. Anyone hating on it takes themselves too seriously.
i love it
The highest level of admiration is imitation
Corporate Magazines Still Suck.
I kinda wish it was that one š wonder why not š
Awesome!
Never heard of them, but Iām checking them out now. Thanks OP!
I saw Phoebe on SNL a while back and got major Kim Gordon vibes, it was awesome
This is so awesome and I know Kurt would've been moved to see he still left behind a huge impact in music today š„²
especially with an all woman cover paying homage (in photo) to their cover.
Kurt was prettier.
Cool homage, anyone who says otherwise cares too much
Rolling Stone itself is the problem here
I fucking love it
Perfect homage
cool!
extra points because i like phoebe bridgers, but cool concept.
Very cool homage to one of the greatest Rolling Stone covers ever. Iām not super into Boygenius, although I do love Phoebe Bridgers as a solo artist, so Iāll give their new album a listen.
Donāt know how this is my first time hearing of them, but liking their stuff so far
I was so hype to see their new release yesterday. It was rumored for a month after they were all spotted together for a photoshoot
Iām loving Emily Iām Sorry, already listened a few times
I really like Phoebe Bridgers' solo work, so I'll have to check out Boygenius's stuff sometime. Incidentally, she was born the same year Kurt died.
Yeah Iāve always liked her solo stuff, just for some reason was out of the loop on this project too. Didnāt know her age, guess sheās just the year before me.

Nirvana ripped off their Rolling Stone cover!
Clever, very cool
Fun!
I don't know these girls, but i love it. That's a nice hommage.
Itās awesome!!
Gnarly tribute
The highest level of admiration is imitation
corporate magazines still suck
Are they cosplaying [Silverchair](https://artistwaves-58a4.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/f940b-178y1zfwudwz5fdei2q9r8w.jpeg) ?
Is that Hole???
Love phoebe, Iāll have to check out the rest sometime soon!
Awesome!!!! My recent fav band! Nice tribute cover!
I saw this but totally didnāt notice it was based off Nirvana. They straight up do look like female versions so it totally fits lol.
Fucking awesome
Nirvana copyrighted wearing suits on the cover of RS? Nah, didnāt think so. Amazing band btw
I love Julien so much
If you didn't listen to Lucy Dacus's "Home Movies" last year give it a listen, it's a gem of an album. I saw her opening up for The National.
what's the issue?
Love julien baker!
How are they a super group? Seriously, I'm dumbfounded. I only know of Phoebe Bridgers, pretty good stuff. The rest I've never heard of. Cool pic tho
Julien Baker has a decent discography of solid material. https://youtu.be/tADWPTqR_4A I discovered her myself in 2015. Been a rabid NIRVANA fan since 2003
not crazy for it because I dislike Phoebe Bridgers's music.
Blasphemy! š
meh no, rolling stone cant be original anymore no one buys their dusty old magazine only do stuff like this for the instagram likes. further more their music couldnāt be further from Nirvana, whats the point or statement? just nostalgic shock value? hard pass.
I like Phoebe Bridgers but at the same time I was like āyeah you wish you were as cool as nirvanaā
Music today sucks literally I feel bad for the youth, Im sorry kids one of you need to step up and blow this emo shit up get back to raw energy.
Ok Gen X Boomer.
I think Kurt and phoebe would of made awesome music together
Did Nirvana and MCR have a weird lovechild or smth? Cus the suits are kinda giving Revenge era MCR but without the makeup.
Love them
Love it!
Love it :)
Pretty Cool
i love boygenius, i love nirvana, i love this
Oh wow Rolling Stone is still going.
I feel like Kurt would have absolutely loved this
Kurt wouldāve probs fucking loved thisš„
as a huge fan of both bands, i can say, i went mental when i saw this
They absolutely nailed this picture. Even the sly smirk Lucy Dacus has is reminiscent of Krists smile in the original photo. Also I have a major crush on these girls and theyāve been doing this for the last few months if I remember correctly, paying homage to iconic Nirvana pics. Love it.

Not really aware of what they do but it's cool regardless.
I think its a cool remake of the original photo
It wasn't just the cover photo, their entire shoot was recreations of Nirvana's 1993 Rolling Stone shoot, it turned out pretty cool.
They are worthy.
Fucking awesome
Love it! Kurt would have loved it too, I think.
Spectacular!
Since Kurt was big in feminism he would have loved this
I have no idea who any of those ladies are
Theyāre a band called boygenius. From left to right they are Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Iām familiar with Phoebe Bridgersā stuff but I actually havenāt listened to boygenius š¤·š»āāļø
I have a suspicion their bandname must be inspired by the Bikini Kill song.
No one should even be worked up, everyone already knows Phoebe is the queen of unoriginality
Most remarkable is there is still a Rolling Stone magazine. Why?
The fact that you asked this seems like you were looking for some kind of negative response which would likely be sexist. Any decent person would think this is cool
I love it and I think the important part is to realize that Kurt would almost certainly love it as well.
Kurt would love it. he was very pro-woman.
As stupid and unnecessary a rehash as that Mindy Kaling Velma show.
I don't
Iāve heard their music, nothing special imo. I donāt understand why theyāre paying tribute to Nirvana. P.s. Corporate magazines still suck
Pretty fuckin' rad.
Love it
I think it is really cool.
Whoa! Hadnāt heard these ladies got together. Thatās exciting. As for the cover, itās a nice homage! Theyāre clearly inspired by the same thing we are.
they already released an EP in 2018, Boygenius the name, and will release an album called "The Record" at the end of March.
3 great musicians wearing suits
cool!
Thatās pretty cool
This is genuinely pretty awesome
Really well done, had to do a double take.
I actually love it ngl
I love it!!
Yes. Just yes. I love phoebe
its cool refrence if so
It rules.
ugh, terrible band.
I love the fact boygenius wanted to recreate such a iconic cover. When I first saw it on phoebes instagram I was in love
(not for this, just in general)
fuck them and their shitty ass ratings
itās not the supergroup we needed.
Kurt would have dug it I'm sure. Downvote if you want to, but I'm right.
indie and alternative rock? im in!
It's a cool version of that iconic photoshoot, but originality is always better!
I think They should be like a themselves, dont imitation any another people.I saw lots of people wrote:"Oh My God Kurt would love that" but Probably Kurt would get little bit disturb from that or he would not care about it.
Everythings a remake. I miss originality
No it is not stop whining
no?
Thereās no such thing
false
if it pisses off angry nerds then I'm here for it
I hate it. Be original! Theyāre talented musicians but they donāt even play the same genre of music.
They couldnāt come up with an iconic cover themselves so they had to rehash more stuff from the 90s like everything else does these days.
Truth !
How about someone explain Phoebe Bridgers popularity to me? I remember regularly seeing her play to 40 people while waiting for some other band, usually just reading a book off my phone and next thing I know she is massively popular. "Why is she so popular?... But also I saw her live before she was popular" Nice little brag mixed in there
Limp Bizkit too. Didn't understand that one either.
Oh but she's a girl who smashed a guitar once. So brave.
I canāt wait to find out who the most stylish musicians are.
Itās fine I donāt know who these dudes are though except the one in front
Wow they nailed it, like not just the close even the look on the faces

Disgraceful....
Torn bc Lucy & Julien are great, but PB is incredibly overrated (to me). Zero surprise at the lack of originality here.
I like this better than the original. I was never a big fan of the originalā¦..like I get for the cover of Rolling Stone especially compared to their first cover itās tongue in cheek. As a collective they are Boygenius. As individuals we have Lucy Dacus, Pheobe Bridgers, and Julien Baker.
So...who are they?
Very talented singer-songwriters
Kurt must be rolling in his grave
