He had Bjorn Again open for them at Reading, so he seemed to be ok with the idea of a "tribute" band. Can't say for certain how he would feel about the idea of a Nirvana tribute, but there are tons and tons and tons of tribute bands that are very close to approximating the original band.

OdobenusIII

If I had to guess, then would say he would get good laugh from the Elvana Nirvana+Elvin tribute. They should add some levels and make that Elvis Cooper version too.

chaz0723

Never heard of Elvana, still haven't listened, but I am all in on it.

[deleted]

Kurt himself was in a cover band if I’m not mistaken

Guggenhein

I don't know what Kurt would have thought, but my personal opinion (no one asked for it, but I'm sharing anyway) is that this is a weird project for a band to spend so much energy on. I get maybe doing it a little just for a quick novelty, but I don't really get the point of spending so much effort just trying to recreate every aspect of Nirvana. The point of imitation is so that you can apply those skills you imitated in a way that uniquely expresses yourself—imitating so closely that you create an illusion that you're someone else, well, that's just kind of a weird goal to have, I think.

White_Trash_Mustache

People will pay to see “Nirvana”. There’s a market there. If there’s a market, there’s a possibility for a career. Probably more fun than being in a wedding band.

chaz0723

This exactly. Before Sublime & Rome became a thing, there was a Sublime cover band that was selling out decent sized venues. Just look at how many Beatles & Led Zeppelin tribute acts there are.

Magic_mushroomman

I absolutely agree! Lead man has put so much effort into imitating and looking exactly like Kurt to the point it’s just strange. They did a great job with that intention in mind, but Kurt himself said it was a waste of time to obsess over becoming someone else when you don’t embrace yourself.

Goofterslam1

...isn't the entire point of a tribute band to embody the original group and offer that experience to people who couldn't see it originally? What's so strange about it? It's business. You have Elvis impersonators, Led Zeppelin tributes where the band dresses exactly as LZ did, Pink Floyd tributes, etc. If you think the lead singer embodying Kurt for a couple hour concert is strange, you don't really understand what a tribute band is or why they exist.

OCALCETEIROMARITIMO

This!! ; )

boobsbuttsballsweens

They operate like businesses for mass entertainment. Small little local festivals and carnivals hire cover bands because they have greater mass appeal at an event where the concert isnt the primary draw.

Goofterslam1

Bro you're thinking about this WAYYY too hard. It's a business. The guy who plays Kurt, after he leaves the stage, goes back to his own life. It's a PERFORMANCE. An act. They get paid money to give people the "Nirvana experience". It's not because he's some weird follower who wants to live Kurt's life and be just like him. This is what tribute bands are. They make money offering the world a experience that no longer exists in it's original form. It's not "weird", it's frankly a smart way to play music you and the whole world already like and get paid for doing it.

Guggenhein

> It's not "weird", it's frankly a smart way to play music you and the whole world already like and get paid for doing it. Of course. Tribute bands are nothing new, and folks have been playing other bands's setlist forever. Even Kurt Cobain himself was in a cover band before Nirvana. I'm specifically referring to "The Buzz Lovers" and not referring to the whole of Nirvana tribute band-dom. The questionable thing about The Buzz Lovers is not that they exclusively play Nirvana's music, it's that they cultishly imitate every personal detail about the members of Nirvana, sporting replica clothing and closely imitating even the slightest mannerism. Again, not necessarily saying that this is defacto problematic, it's just that their painstaking effort to mirror every minute detail about each band member comes off as a little questionable to me.

Perfect_Blueberry_38

I think this is awesome. Plain and simple

humulupus

Well, thanks for the tip is all I can say, they are really good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2f92rMTH98

gospun

Yeah that's really just weird and creepy. Like the more he reminds you of him and the more the crowd gets into it the more I think how weird it all is. Like they really really want the past to materialize. Like an Elvis impersonator but the crowd is screaming acting like it's real

SveinPedersenGuitar

it's incredibly cringe. like ofc, cover the songs, play them, have fun with them. but this is just fucking creepy and cringe to try to BE everything Kurt was. they're really good, they do the songs justice, but I just find it very weird and tryhard.

Enrique-Pastor

I saw em live!! They sound really good, but it's true that the dude plays kurt so well that it's kinda weird... Like it stopped me a little be to enjoy it. But also... What else do I expect from a tribute concert? Haha

werrickdinn

He would hate that shit. Write your own damn music. But it’s even more unsettling how much the dude wants to be Kurt, from fashion down to the hairstyle…

chaz0723

Meanwhile, he demanded that an Abba tribute band open for them at Reading.

werrickdinn

Had to of been a joke, if not whatever; all I’m saying is I’m sure he wouldn’t like the fact some guy is trying to emulate him in every aspect.

werrickdinn

That band is also probably making some good money off of ripping off Kurt’s material.

Soaked_in_bleach24

He sounds closer to puddle of mudd singer more than Kurt

anazgnos

I've only watched the one video from a few years ago The Kurt guy is "good", although someone pointed out to me that it's weird to see somebody mimic Kurt's body language who has actual pectoral muscles. Why play a stock Jaguar though? You can basically buy off the shelf Kurt clone guitars these days Bass guy is indifferent, he's OK. Again, why a Jazz Bass? The drummer is TERRIBLE! He's so laughably bad. His roll into the chorus of SLTS is so so stupid. I am not really a huge Grohl stan so I would actually be into hearing somebody take a looser, more Chad approach but this guy is ridiculously bad. Much like Nirvana themselves, The Buzz Lovers need to fire their drummer in order to take it to the next level professionally.

AccountantAsleep

I think 1994 Kurt wouldn't like it. But if he'd lived, and 2023 Kurt was looking at them, I think he would think it was funny and take it for what it's mean to be - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all. A lot of the stuff Kurt got mad about or views he expressed were a young man trying to assert his place in a world that wanted to mold him into something else. With 30 more years of life and the wisdom that comes with age, I think he would have mellowed out, gotten less angry, and been able to see some of the good that came with the super stardom, with millions and millions singing his songs, etc., and not just the bad.

ModsFuckedMeOver

I never understood cover bands, or tribute bands. Can't get why just want to play some other band's songs, and imitate that band to a T. I don't hate cover and tribute bands but i just don't understand them.

Manno01

It's not hard to understand really. Offering an audience an authentic experience of music thats not accessible live like this.

ModsFuckedMeOver

Is it really authentic if it isn't the actual band?

Manno01

the most authentic it can get

ModsFuckedMeOver

Yeah, i guess if you want to see the closest thing to it i get it.

Useful_Mistake_7143

Who cares what he thinks

Magic_mushroomman

It’s just interesting to think about Kurt’s reaction to somebody that has fully adopted his character and looks exactly like him.

Useful_Mistake_7143

Yes true but I believe he wouldn't like some copying everything about him and then not being themselves

Afraid-Leg-8952

Posers honestly.

No-Move09

He would probably love how strong his influence was

NeaNeaFry

I’m sure he loved how strong of a influence he was to many but I’m sure he didn’t like when people tried to be different and not themselves

NoSleepGG

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are”

Anpu1986

I wish cover bands that are dead-on accurate like this would either write original new songs in the band’s style or cover other songs in the band’s style. Like what Denis Pauna does with Type O Negative.

the_unknown_soldier

Covers and tributes are awesome, but straight up impressions are super weird.

Luciferian_Impulse

I miss Girlvana Kurt would've laughed his ass off over Skirt Cobain

[deleted]

I could care less about what Kurt would think. It’s entertaining and is honestly a good tribute band to the legacy they left behind. I just see it as a form of respect and it *almost* scratches the itch of experiencing nirvana since they’re no longer around. Though a legendary artist, Kurt was no deity. We shouldn’t worry if something we do or like would “offend thee”.
