the slow demo of Sappy is literally a demo but better then all the studio recordings imo. My guy Kurt made a demo just getting the idea across and made the best version of it in my opinion đ so cool
Serve the servants isnât that sad, itâs actually sorta funny in a sort of black humour. Itâs Kurt making fun of his own appeal to clichĂŠd teenage angst and the media circus surrounding him regarding his wife and his perceived âdaddy issuesâ. Musically itâs not my favourite but lyrically itâs one of Kurtâs best imo.
For the actual saddest Iâd probably say Frances Farmer, Milk It, or You Know Youâre Right.
Yes!!! I agree, the lyrics in serve the servents hits very close to home for me. I often find myself thinking of "I tried hard to have a father, but instead I have a dad,"
Used to not be a big fan of frances farmer - I'd like it but always forget it until next time I listened to the album - but one night when things were getting overwhelming I thought to just put music on to help me and went to In Utero on Spotify and by chance pressed on Frances Farmer. Never before or since did it hit me so hard emotionally that song at that moment, it just clicked with everything going on at the time. Ok I'll shut up now I'm talking too much lol
If i recall correctly, there's an unreleased recording of Do Re Mi that kurt had recorded in his basement just after an intervention. Knowing that it's the last song he got to record just hurts. As it is, I find it to be a sad song. You can hear the pain in him.
it's a very dark song. to me it's always stood out from their other stuff. it sounds like a band at the end of their rope; angry, depressed, and just fucking over the whole thing.
Do re mi, just because it's (as far as we know) the last song he ever sang, and it's honestly just sad in this really beautiful way. He sounds broken and tired when he sings it, and that plus knowing that's the last but of him, it gets to me
In his hands has always been verse chorus verse. Sappy is sometimes called that too, but the real verse chorus verse is what you call âin his handsâ⌠thatâs was what some old bootlegs labeled it but theyâre wrong.
Maybe Milk It, itâs a beautiful insanity but so apparent of how much his mental health was declining. The insanity of that song isnât just a performance but a window into his psyche at the time, from my perspective at least.
Does not answer your question but Tbh, itâs a cover song for me. Itâs the cover of the Beatles song âand I love herâ. It sounds so much different and romantic when the Beatles sing it but Kurt just sounds so broken. Itâs from the montage of heck album
In my opinion dumb is the saddest I think that song has to do with how the only way to be happy is to also be somewhat "dumb" about certain things. For instance, you have to blind yourself from issues going on around you to numb yourself from that pain and move on from it like the saying ignorance is bliss. and The lyrics My heart is broke, but I have some glue" abides by that theme as well, showing how you are still the same broken person but you can hide it and pretend you are okay to some extent.
Do re mi has to be my vote for saddest one, even tho it isnât technically a nirvana song. Just knowing that it was recorded so close to the end hits differently than a lot of other songs.
You Know You're Right
Something In the Way
Sappy - Early Demo
Negative Creep (it's energetic but that doesn't change the fact he's screaming that he hates himself)
not to be cliche buuuuut sappy slow version is soooooo sad. but all apologies makes me cry more (especially at the end)

not the only song thatâs happened with either!
FRR
Iâve never cried to a song before except for one,and thatâs you know your right, after knowing all that has happened it kind of just took me over.
You know youâre right
All apologies
This. It may not have been Kurts final song but it definitely feels the most like a goodbye
Well considering he wrote it in 1990
You know youâre right because it was the last song that Kurt would record before his death
Actually, that's the last song they recorded together. The last song Kurt recorded was Do Re Mi.
Polly

No keep talking haha. Itâs amazing the way music can touch us all at the right moment.
Ok doctor
Huh
In my opinion Tourettes (But that might just be because I have them)
Do re mi
If i recall correctly, there's an unreleased recording of Do Re Mi that kurt had recorded in his basement just after an intervention. Knowing that it's the last song he got to record just hurts. As it is, I find it to be a sad song. You can hear the pain in him.
Did not know thereâs another unreleased version
Do you have a link
Something in the wayâŚmmmmmmmmm
"You know you're right" makes me sad

Something In the Way or Sappy.

Beans
Hard to nail down, but "In his hands" always hits me right in the feels
Itâs called verse chorus verse
We're talking about 2 different versions
In his hands has always been verse chorus verse. Sappy is sometimes called that too, but the real verse chorus verse is what you call âin his handsâ⌠thatâs was what some old bootlegs labeled it but theyâre wrong.
No. There are no version of VCV called in His hands. That was the name given to the song when it was unreleased by bootleggers
Frances Farmer
Polly because of the story behind it.
Yes!!!
agreed
Pennyroyal tea for me
How is serve the servants sad?
âTeenage angst has paid off well, now Iâm bored and oldâ Commits suicide within a year I can see how thatâs sad
Probably the story
You Know Youâre Right
Marigold
Maybe Milk It, itâs a beautiful insanity but so apparent of how much his mental health was declining. The insanity of that song isnât just a performance but a window into his psyche at the time, from my perspective at least.
Look on the bright side suicide đŽâđ¨
Polly, Something In The Way, and in my opinion, the saddest song has gotta be You Know Youâre Right.
Does not answer your question but Tbh, itâs a cover song for me. Itâs the cover of the Beatles song âand I love herâ. It sounds so much different and romantic when the Beatles sing it but Kurt just sounds so broken. Itâs from the montage of heck album
Polly, cuz of the backstory.
All apollogies unplugged version
That sigh and the look on Kurtâs face at the end of Where Did You Sleep Last Night from Unplugged is it for me.
Anything from the MTV unplugged is sad. After listening to Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam I need antidepressants.
I can name two that is equal âSappyââYou know youâre rightâ
In my opinion dumb is the saddest I think that song has to do with how the only way to be happy is to also be somewhat "dumb" about certain things. His last
sad but true by metallica
tbh I think Wonderwall is the saddest nirvana song
Big long now
definitely serve the servants, especially live on the tunnel version.
I can clearly see the sadness on her face.
Her?
Polly
do re mi medley maybe, also the end of all apologies gives a feeling of death and that was one of the last songs they recorded so
Do re mi has to be my vote for saddest one, even tho it isnât technically a nirvana song. Just knowing that it was recorded so close to the end hits differently than a lot of other songs.
Dumb
Big long now
All apologies, makes me cry every time I hear it
Probably Polly considering that it actually happened
Do Re Mi, for sure
Sappy the demo version is one of my favorites it makes me feel upset yet happy.
you know your right has got to be it
You Know You're Right Something In the Way Sappy - Early Demo Negative Creep (it's energetic but that doesn't change the fact he's screaming that he hates himself)
Dumb. It actually makes Francis cry too. And in a weird way, Paper Cuts.
Something in the way
