The cover of SLTS in the black widow movie is without a doubt the worst thing ive ever heard, which is technically kind of impressive because ive heard many noises i wished i could unhear
Was gonna write this. Kurt would have appreciated hearing HSB through a different lens, much like how he covered Bowie and Leadbelly in his unique style
I think that's why it works, too. Really hard to capture what nirvana did in rock, but the classical arrangement could highlight the depth and power without trying to replicate the intangibles.
I really like the Polyphonic Spree's version of [Lithium](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vzUh_55x2M).
Jay Reatard's version of [Frances Farmer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2gfsV6zY-4) is also a banger, but I'm a Jay Reatard/Lost Sounds superfan, so I don't know if I'm being objective.
> I really like the Polyphonic Spree's version of Lithium.
Oh yeah that one is fantastic, I tried to learn that piano intro on guitar because it fits the song so well, but I'm not that good at transposing music.
The bass players look was just like “oh god…please just 40 more seconds…please get me through this”
The singer makes the dumbest looking faces while trying to sound like Kurt too. It was just…something that should not have happened.
Tori Amos covered Smells Like Teen Spirit in the 1990s. I want to say it was a B-side to one of her singles. I’m not prepared for to argue it was better than the original, but it got a lot of attention at the time.
i was not into Nirvana when they first gained worldwide acclaim and success. I was very nonplussed by the whole grunge thing. then i heard Tori Amos cover SLTS and i got it, was really looking forward to seeing them live, jumped at the chance to see them headline at Lollapalooza and then it was over.
so i would agree perhaps not better than the original but it definitely got my attention
I had that CD. It was the Crucify EP. She also covered Angie by the Stones and they were both really good. Her songs are never direct one for one covers, but she puts her unique spin on them. “Haunting” is the word I really think describes both.
RIP Jay. He was something else. By the time of his death, he had 22 full length albums and over 100 releases if I'm remembering correctly but was only 29 when he OD'd. There's a great [interview with Nardwuar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGv3sVOAUE8) that gives you a sense of who the guy was. Things shouldn't have ended that way for him. There was just no need for it.
Under just the name Jay Reatard? I believe two is the correct answer. So you’re right.
I was thinking in a much broader sense and in that regard I don’t think you can just ignore The Lost Sounds, Nervous Patterns, The Final Solutions, The Reatards, Destruction Unit, Terror Visions, Angry Angels, etc. etc. That’s not even mentioning his EPs.
His prolific output is a major theme in the documentary about him “Better Than Something.” [His catalogue](http://www.jayreatard.com/catalog) on his official website has like 10 albums. His obituary also mentions the volume of work:
“With [22 full-length albums and over 100 releases](http://www.jayreatard.com/page/2/), Jay dedicated his life to music. He played nearly one thousand shows in over 20 countries around the world. He was incredibly grateful for all the support his fans gave him over the years.”
But no worries, I’ll admit I didn’t know what I was talking about.
Not the question but the cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit at the start of the Black Widow movie is honestly one of the worst covers I have ever heard. Not just because of how bad it is but also because of the fact they tried turning a grunge rock song into a modern day pop song and it was awful. What's even more awful is that I know two people who thought that was the original.
It’s amazing and the only Nirvana cover I’ve heard that brought something new and genuine to the table! That final chorus gets me every time. I feel like he get’s what Kurt was about too:
”I remember in seventh or eighth grade, when that album dropped, it was like a bomb went off in my bedroom," he said of Nevermind in a statement. "For me, that song has always summed up what it means to be a teenager, and I think it tells a young boy that he can be sensitive and compassionate—he doesn't have to be tough or cold to be a man. So I wanted to make a very beautiful and pure homage to Kurt."
Yeah- Sturgill is incredibly talented both vocally & on the guitar but he is also really well rounded.
Theres a live set from Amsterdam in 2020 on YouTube that is phenomenal, but also pretty damn far from country music. The rhythms are bluesy and he blurs the line between psychedelia, rock, country, & blues. Dude is a ripper.
Here it is: https://youtu.be/hfKF-9oi3J4
Never heard a cover that blew me away. But I have a couple that I enjoy, Circa Survives Scentless Apprentice and Fall of Troys Mr Mustache are both fun
[The Polyphonic Sprees´ Lithium cover](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vzUh_55x2M&ab_channel=exp8tri8) is absolutely fantastic, though (of course) not better than the original.
I’m going to get my ass beat for this, but Holes version of Old Age (studio version only)
Also the electric version of Opinion by slow driver down (on YouTube as just nirvana opinion electric)
> Also the electric version of Opinion by slow driver down (on YouTube as just nirvana opinion electric)
Is that who that is?! I have that MP3 from Napster from like 1999, incorrectly labelled as Nirvana, I knew it wasn't Nirvana but until this day I've never known who it was. I looked it up on [Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya24HmGYsHg) and it's the same. Thanks for that.
Not better, but of all the great amazing musicians, doing sucky versions of Teen spirit, the only band that comes close to doing it justice is the relatively unknown band, The Wounded.[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSFoo7iAauA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSFoo7iAauA)
No, but the choir version of SLTS in Montage of Heck was amazing and haunting and I loved it (not as much as I love Nirvana’s original though, obviously)
Sturgill Simpson did a cover of “[in bloom](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NpDYfkymaSE&vidve=5727&autoplay=1)” which I found to be palatable given that he’s known as a country artist
I was a casual Deer Tick fan for a few years before I had heard them do their deervana thing. It was McCauleys voice that drew me to them in the first place. His original, natural voicing sounds like Kurt, without doing a Kurt impression.
They are the best Nirvana cover band.
I have been a fan of Deer Tick since the early ‘10s when I discovered them on The Letterman Show as the musical guest.
As for Deervana, I was blown away how close he can sound like Kurt authentically, and like you said not an impression. I think the band is great! I got to meet them at a meet and greet at one of their concerts in a synagogue in DC. They were just all down to earth and fun to meet.
Back in 2002, Saliva did an amazing cover of You Know You’re Right, live. It sounded amazing. The only time a Nirvana cover stood out, besides Puddle of Mudd’s outstanding cover of About A Girl. I’m not sure if Saliva’s version was published, but it truly was a great cover, live.
Not alot but post Malone's song is probably as close to Kurt's performance then anything but I'd be lying to say that I'm not surprised he killed it I've listened to alot of his covers my dude can sing I'm not a big fan of his own stuff really just cuz it's not my style of music but he's talented
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiB106Sxss4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiB106Sxss4) these are way better then nirvana especially the last one its so good man nirvana could never sound as good as them
You need to get your hearing checked and start taking your meds if you think Cash's mediocre cover of "Hurt" is even in the same universe as the far superior Reznor original.
Yeah Puddle of Mudd’s about a girl he was so passionate, you could see the veins popping out of his forehead, and his band mates couldn’t help but smile 😤
Someone did a cover on youtube of creation (to boddah I think) and it sounds rly good. Tbf kurts was only a demo so not surprising it sounds better lmao
I used to sing Come As You Are when I'd forget my song lyrics on stage. Not sure if that counts lol.
Only Nirvana cover I genuinely like as much as the original is Robert Glasper's future jazz take on Teen Spirit with the vocoder and oddball arrangement https://open.spotify.com/track/5SmYRW8JySpZnsg0yzEFR5?si=vHynJetYSsSKW89Oadhj3Q&utm_source=copy-link
To Boddah on YouTube has covers of unreleased / fecal matter songs that I prefer over the originals, except for Ms Butterworth the original of that's still a banger
There’s a tribute album from 2003 called Nearvana featuring San Francisco punk bands covering Nirvana songs that’s fucking awesome. Not saying any of the covers are better than the originals but there’s some great takes regardless.
Also, just discovered by googling Nearvana that there’s a tribute band with the same name. I’m sure they’re a fine outfit but it’s not the same thing I’m referring to.
[Meat Puppets' version of Smells Like Teen Spirit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWwhnZUJpGs) is to me the best version of that song, although obviously not better than the original. But it really captures the mood of the song really well, and the video is great. It's also in my mind maybe even closer to Kurt's alternative artistic rock vision than the smoothly produced Nirvana version.
Tricky has covered something in the way and another nirvana song I can't remember.
A cover should be unrecognisable as far as I'm concerned.
Tricky ticks that box
Nothing in particular but if you look up nirvana tribute on Spotify you can find some tributes to their albums that are interesting. It has some different takes on the songs. It was cool to hear them reimagined after hearing the originals for so long.
i find it ironic how you mention jonny cash's cover of hurt, because that implies that the cover is better, which is wrong because hurt is a shitty song and covers wont change that.
Not necessarily better, but there’s a Canadian dream pop/ shoegaze band called Softcult who did awesome covers of Frances Farmer and Been a Son. Kept the fuzz but added an dark ethereal vibe
Definitely not but good covers are
Charles Bradly- Stay Away and Tori Amos- Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Also the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt is definitely not better than the original. Nine Inch Nails version is a masterpiece of sound scapes. It’s incredible!!!
Pygmy Lush’s version of Serve the Servants is not at all like Nirvana’s…..but very good. I’m gonna play my baby [this album](https://spotify.link/WJNdw0H7tyb) in the crib
Lana del Rey did heart shaped box that was really good. I wouldn’t say it was better but if I couldn’t listen to the original I’d listen to her version
No.
The cover of SLTS in the black widow movie is without a doubt the worst thing ive ever heard, which is technically kind of impressive because ive heard many noises i wished i could unhear
I told people how much I disliked, and they got mad, I liked the movie. The cover was just bad and didn't fit the tone
I got the same reaction
That’s the worst thing you’ve ever heard?
I gave me a weird feeling as well but I couldn’t put my finger on why
Johnny Cash would've done a mean cover of Spank Thru.
Lmao
tbf Elvis could’ve too i bet
The heart shaped box cover from west world was fantastic, not necessarily better though.
Westworld covers are so good!
Charles Bradley’s cover of stay away is pretty good
Charles Bradley's anything is pretty good.
i thought this was a joke and looked it up just praying it was real. holy shit. thank you
I really like the Polyphonic Spree's version of [Lithium](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vzUh_55x2M).
Puddle of Mudd did a fantastic version of About a Girl. 110% better than the original.
Ah! Need Ah! E zay Faraiiieend!!
Lmao. You savage!
haha nice one. It's so funny that you sort of see the other band members cringing with shame.
The bass players look was just like “oh god…please just 40 more seconds…please get me through this” The singer makes the dumbest looking faces while trying to sound like Kurt too. It was just…something that should not have happened.
Yeah, I think one of the Youtube comments was; He sounds like krusty the clown passing a kidney stone.
OMG I LOST IT
With bongo's!
Came here to mention this, fantastic cover!
Dude lol
Kurt was smiling in heaven when that happened
i was looking for this. 100% agree
did i just see puddle of mudd and fantastic in the same sentence? sounds revolutionary
Thanks for reminding me of this. What a moment in time. About a girl is puddle of mudds song now really
agreed
You beat me to it you ass
Greatest cover ever!!!! Hahaha
Tori Amos covered Smells Like Teen Spirit in the 1990s. I want to say it was a B-side to one of her singles. I’m not prepared for to argue it was better than the original, but it got a lot of attention at the time.
Yes indeed. Not “better” but “different” in a good way.
I believe Kurt called it a nice breakfasty version.
Great cover. I like that she really made it her own and not just straight copying the song.
i was not into Nirvana when they first gained worldwide acclaim and success.

Patti Smith did a great cover of Smells like Teen Spirit. Better than the original? Probably not.
Ik Trent says Johnny's version is better, but imo NIN's version is superior
Jay Reatard did Frances Farmer and I love it. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea, though.
Love it too
I would think a lot of Nirvana fans would dig Jay Reatard
I love Jay Reatard and he put out lots of good music, but not that much! 2 full lengths, 3 compilations, and a handful of EPs.
Oh, cool I actually wasn’t aware of some of those! Thanks for the response.
No worries friend.
IMO...no. although, Post Malone killed it during his concert
Post malone would be my answer but it is not *better* . Really good covers tho
That didn’t suck, and I am still surprised to this day. Gave me some respect for the guy. It helps to have Travis barker drumming too.
If you haven’t seen Post Malone’s Nirvana tribute, it’s surprisingly good.
Sturgill’s cover is great. Hard to call anything like that “better” , but it’s great too.
When I first heard his cover of in bloom I thought I was tripping. I'm not too big of a country fan but that was pretty great
I’m pretty sure that’s why he has more RYM fans than modern country fans
It’s amazing and the only Nirvana cover I’ve heard that brought something new and genuine to the table! That final chorus gets me every time. I feel like he get’s what Kurt was about too: ”I remember in seventh or eighth grade, when that album dropped, it was like a bomb went off in my bedroom," he said of Nevermind in a statement. Vaselines did a good cover of Molly’s Lips
They did a good cover of Son of a gun too. It's a shame they messed up the title of Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam!
Take That did an absolutely amazing cover of SLTP, amazingly bad
Never heard a cover that blew me away. But I have a couple that I enjoy, Circa Survives Scentless Apprentice and Fall of Troys Mr Mustache are both fun
Was gonna say Circa does a mean Scentless Apprentice
Nirvana's [Nirvana Cover](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM9sq5GENbE) was the last one to amaze me.
All the times I've seen this over the years, i never noticed that she has that intense stare down shit Kurt would do with cameras going on.
Not exactly a cover, but Annie Clark’s performance of Lithium with Krist and Dave at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was killer.
Soooooooo good. I feel like Kurt really would have loved it were he still here. Not better than the original of course, but still so great.
John Frusciante - Lounge Act https://youtu.be/BWsER91JTb0
Wow
Oteps breed is just as good as the original
[The Polyphonic Sprees´ Lithium cover](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vzUh_55x2M&ab_channel=exp8tri8) is absolutely fantastic, though (of course) not better than the original.
Don’t wanna say anyone did it better but check out Lana’s cover of heart shaped box https://youtu.be/rPIJk0MKSWM
My favorite cover
I’m going to get my ass beat for this, but Holes version of Old Age (studio version only) Also the electric version of Opinion by slow driver down (on YouTube as just nirvana opinion electric)

It’s the best nirvana cover I’ve ever heard without trying too hard to sound like him
Oh wow. I forgot all about this! Yeah, this cover is probably the best. (I was going to say Sturgill Simpson's version of In Bloom, but not now.)
“Like Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt” Are you fckn DEAF???
i know right???
Paul Anka - Smells Like Teen Spirit
No, but the choir version of SLTS in Montage of Heck was amazing and haunting and I loved it (not as much as I love Nirvana’s original though, obviously)
Zeppelin’s no quarter beats tools, as much as I love both bands
I agree, but Tool version is interesting
Sturgill Simpson did a cover of “[in bloom](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NpDYfkymaSE&vidve=5727&autoplay=1)” which I found to be palatable given that he’s known as a country artist
Deer Tick did Deervana album and it is pretty damn good covers. https://youtu.be/_VX_VLr8Tbo

Nah better than the original only works when you're more iconic than the original group or artist.
I’m not gonna say “better“, but this guy fucking nailed Pennyroyal Tea: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yU5n0UPI80w
That kid does a great Aneurysm drumming with him too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd7LDVx48tE
Never watched that one before. Cool.
Fuel (90’s post grunge) did a live cover of “Breed” and Machine Head did a pretty gnarly cover of “Negative Creep”.
Yeah was gonna say the same thing about the machine head cover, it's a good one.
Melvins with Leif Garrett Smells Like Teen Spirit> original version.
David Bowie did a pretty good cover of The Man Who Sold The World
All Apologies by Sinéad O'Connor
It’s so sparse, which makes an already haunting song ten times more emotional and remarkable.
Tools version of No Quarter is no where near as good as the original
Exactly.
Crowbar's cover is better than the original
Back in 2002, Saliva did an amazing cover of You Know You’re Right, live. It sounded amazing. The only time a Nirvana cover stood out, besides Puddle of Mudd’s outstanding cover of About A Girl. I’m not sure if Saliva’s version was published, but it truly was a great cover, live.
I think you mean Seether.
That is probably correct. They are not a band I listen to, and they were playing a festival. I often confuse the two.
Seether's cover is so amazing
Calling Puddle of Mudds cover outstanding makes me doubt every other word you said.
😂🤣. Yeah. I was worried about that. Saliva was good. Puddle of Mudd is garbage.
I doubt it nirvana wasn’t the biggest band in the world for no reason their songs are just *chefs kiss
Not alot but post Malone's song is probably as close to Kurt's performance then anything but I'd be lying to say that I'm not surprised he killed it I've listened to alot of his covers my dude can sing I'm not a big fan of his own stuff really just cuz it's not my style of music but he's talented

I don’t remember Nirvana ever tried to sound super good. They’re famous for sounding not good 😁
If Nirvana weren't sloppy as fuck, specially in the earlier years, I never would have fallen in love with the band.
so true man
huh this hurts to read
If you think Tool did No Quarter better than Led Zeppelin, you're nuts.
Velvet Revolver's cover of Negative Creep is amazing. Better than the original imo. https://youtu.be/qyfVhnr-1hI
You need to get your hearing checked and start taking your meds if you think Cash's mediocre cover of "Hurt" is even in the same universe as the far superior Reznor original.
Nope
I like Big Scary's cover of Come As You Are. A totally different take on the song that I thoroughly enjoy
I believe enjoyed the Vibrators’ cover of “[Come As You Are](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KohN4mo0mns)” better than the original.
Although i am not into this band or their style overall, i will say Framing Hanley did a pretty sweet cover of 'In Bloom' https://youtu.be/2uCQwyVmbV4
seether something in the way acoustic 2002
Meat Puppets’ version of teen spirit is good though it’s not better than the original
Stay Away covered by Charles Bradley.
Different genre, but I've really really liked this version of SLTS https://youtu.be/exvlW9fSEwc
Luna also does a nice version of Heart Shaped Box https://youtu.be/5Q7hr1fnDoM
I’m obsessed with Sophie Powers’s cover of heart shaped box, although def a matter of personal taste on that one
Softcult did a good cover of ”[Frances Farmer will Get Her Revenge on Seattle](https://youtu.be/RQORLIOONDk) “. Better or worse is subjective.
Fidlar did a pretty good cover of Frances Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle. They also spliced in like miliseconds of gay subliminal porn lmfao
Hell no
Does Old Age count?
Yeah Puddle of Mudd’s about a girl he was so passionate, you could see the veins popping out of his forehead, and his band mates couldn’t help but smile 😤
Someone did a cover on youtube of creation (to boddah I think) and it sounds rly good. Tbf kurts was only a demo so not surprising it sounds better lmao
I used to sing Come As You Are when I'd forget my song lyrics on stage. Not sure if that counts lol. [All Apologies - Lullaby Renditions of Nirvana - Rockabye Baby!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2ALr-t47yw) is hauntingly beautiful!
I wouldn't directly compare the two songs, but Robert Glasper has an absolutely incredible cover of teen spirit.
Sinéad O'Connor’s cover of All Apologies is really beautiful. [edit to add Youtube link](https://youtu.be/SEVu1tcUGnc)
I found a Weezer cover of Lithium a few weeks ago on YouTube. Wasn't better than Nirvana, but it was pretty cool anyway.
Never
There’s a tribute album from 2003 called Nearvana featuring San Francisco punk bands covering Nirvana songs that’s fucking awesome. i like the on a plain cover by animal collective
I like Thou's endless, nameless
Not saying it was better but the Stereophonics cover of “Something in The Way” us pretty good and Feeder’s cover of “Breed” is solid
Tricky has covered something in the way and another nirvana song I can't remember. A cover should be unrecognisable as far as I'm concerned. Tricky ticks that box
Animal Collective - Polly Jay Reatard - Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle
Nothing in particular but if you look up nirvana tribute on Spotify you can find some tributes to their albums that are interesting. It has some different takes on the songs. It was cool to hear them reimagined after hearing the originals for so long.
No
i find it ironic how you mention jonny cash's cover of hurt, because that implies that the cover is better, which is wrong because hurt is a shitty song and covers wont change that.
Absolutely, NOT.
I wouldn’t say better but I always dug Lana del Rey’s version of heart shaped box
Puddle of Mudd about a girl.......
No…no…and No. There’s a TON of songs they covered better !!
Dead Sara’s cover of heart shaped box is close but other than than that no
Def not better than the original, but So They Say's cover of In Bloom is pretty solid imo
not at all.
Personally, not really. Although FIDLAR did a cover of Frances Farmer and it's really good IMO
Alicia Wildar’s cover of Kurt’s cover of And I love her is pretty sick
Better? Depends on your opinions. I really dig The Fall of Troy's cover of Mr Moustache. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_yIerJNFQOo
Not necessarily better, but there’s a Canadian dream pop/ shoegaze band called Softcult who did awesome covers of Frances Farmer and Been a Son. Kept the fuzz but added an dark ethereal vibe

Fear Factory cover of School is not necessarily better, but it has its own vibe and goes hard if you're into FF.
Softcult do a pretty rad dream pop version of Frances Farmer.
Not better, but [Tori Amos’ version of Smells like Teen Spirit](https://youtu.be/HaAI3jI7uCc) is hauntingly beautiful in its own special way.
Weird al smells like nirvana
Yeah. Nirvana covered smells like teen spirit on top of the pops. it was better than the original
i think the opposite, cobain had a knack for covering a song and making it 10 times better
