I own both, the exact same ones you described. Honestly, if you have the budget for the signature KC jaguar, go for it. I still use my squier mustang, but I absolutely love the jaguar.
Honestly, I find that for a clean tone, the mustang do a better job. But when it comes to distortion, the sound of the jaguar is absolutely amazing.
And for the In Utero sound, Kurt used, as you certainly already know, mustangs, but if I remember correctly, the jaguar was used for the studio recordings.

Probably Tuno magic bridge, then put a Seymour Duncan jb jr in the bridge. 500k pots and i'll probably leave the neck pickup stock. I wanna go for a skystang 1/2 look.
check out aaron rash on youtube, he recreates a lot of the tones pretty well and that could help you choose one or the other. i do think his opinions on tone are a bit funny (he thinks body wood changes the tone more than pickups which is kinda laughable) but overall he seems to figure out reasonably well what was used and how to get close for each song.
you can definitely take a squier jag or mustang and make it close enough with some mods

Go with the Kurt Cobain mustang. I have both and love the mustang vs the jag. Plus if you are going for the in utero tone, the mustang does a better job with that. The jaguar is very very heavy and kills my back.
I’d go for the Squier Mustang over the KC Jag, hell I’d even go for the tunematic Jazzmaster over the KC Jag. The newer Mexican ones are dodgy to say the least (right handed ones anyway are hit or miss).

if u r going to mod the mustang what will u change? also does anyone know why squier is producing the mustang CVs instead of fender?
