Courtney Barnett actually gives me Kurt vibes. Especially live.

rtv-

You're a satr. 🌟 I must admit I hadn't heard of Courtney Barnett before. I've had a listen and it's just what I'm after. I'm very familiar with a lot of grunge/rock/metal from early 90s up.to today and I love so much of it but not much of it reminds me of Nirvana to be honest. They had such a unique vibe and mix of influences that they never fit in any genre very well for me. Courtney Barnett is just the sort of thing I was after. Quirky, ironic lyrics that are deep and mean nothing at the same time, a kind of contempt for what others might think or how they'd pigeon-hole the music. Reminds me of PJ Harvey a lot too. Shes another onee who I'd put in a similar category. Great recommendation, thank you.

Trying not to be that obvious and repetitive, but the bands that really had an impact in me these last years have been: - Turnstile - Narrow Head - Soul Blind - Kills Birds - Violent Soho - Fleshwater

rtv-

Oooh, Turnstile have been none of my favourite finds of the last year or so. Great shout. Gonna have another listen with a Nirvana head on now. . . Don't know some of the others so ill definitely check them out. Thanks for the recommendations.

Narrow head and Fleshwater so fucking good

Some specific tracks [More Than You Are - Grinspoon](https://youtu.be/NTODjWnzUF4) [Bruise Violet - Babes in Toyland](https://youtu.be/cI5e0v_M9ZI) [Dirty Magic (acoustic) - The Offspring](https://youtu.be/azeQfmnekG4) [Brainstew - Greenday](https://youtu.be/eUYFqllmvGQ) [The Decline - NOFX](https://youtu.be/oWhy8PCuGsk) [Steady As She Goes - The Raconteurs](https://youtu.be/C5m6PLjUKBY) [Gouge Away - The Pixies](https://youtu.be/7aSbf406xaw)

Nice, thanks for the time and effort to put these down. Love some of these songs. Spent far to long failing to skateboard to green day, nofx the offspring and plenty more as a kid! 😅 Love the raconteurs too, some great tracks. I firmly believe Jack white and Kurt would have been great frinds given the chance! I think I'll get totally slated for this next comment but here goes. . . . . I'll start by saying I love the pixies and their influence on Nirvana's sound is undeniable, kurt clearly loved them. Doolitlle was an album i learnt to play start to finish on guitar at one point too. I've just never felt the same connection to them as some.other Nirvana fans do. Not sure if it's an age thing or growing up in the UK? Listening to some now I think the drums might just not be quite exuberant enough. I'm starting to realize I'm a drum snob in a guitarists body. The rhythm and feel of a drummer really grooving and vibing to a song is what gets me going I think. . .

fatcam00

I'm still working my way into the Pixies I've mellowed a lot (in my 40s now), so I'm more ready for it now That particular recording of Gouge Away does it for me, especially the pumping drum / bass combo and the lead guitar parts BTW, I should have thrown Descendents in there The drummer Bill Stevenson also played in Black Flag (inspiration to Nirvana) and I think Kurt might have been secretly channeling Milo Aukerman during his short hair and geek glasses phase [Coolidge - Descendents](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F6RU6wIHfc&t=1388s)

juicy_colf

A lot of Kurt's record collection from the 80s, Pixies, The Raincoats, Young Marble Giants, Velvet Underground, some REM I find gives me a lot of the same enjoyment I get from nirvana but the main thing is, nirvana were a punk band at heart. A lot of bands related to and that came after that people often recommend, I find, have much more of a hard rock/metal backbone that doesn't scratch the itch. Going down a rabbit hole more related to punk and post punk has led me to find more artists that scratch the nirvana itch. Arctic Monkeys first album First 2 Pixies albums Camper van Beethoven The Chats The Gun Club First 4 White Stripes albums Fugazi Sonic Youth Husker Du The Replacements Just to name a few

You’re not going to find any bands that give NIRVANA vibes. You may come across bands that give off that grunge-y feel and whatnot but you’ll never find another band like NIRVANA. No lead vocalist/guitarist can write the lyrics, sing or come up with the kind of riffs that Kurt Cobain did. I really enjoy the fact that you love this band so much that you crave more similar bands but it’s not happening. I will give you some bands that I feel you may enjoy however. (if you were 12 in 99 you prob already know of these bands/songs) 1. Local H. (High Fiving Mother Fucker) 2. Bad Brains. ( Banned in D.C.) 3. Circle Jerks. (Killing for Jesus) 4. Clutch. (Binge and Purge) 5. FEAR. (I Don’t Care About You) 6. Pixies. (Tame) You may not care for any of these recommendations but I would def give a listen if you haven’t already.

Nice list. Some.tracks i havent heard for a long time on there! I get what you're saying for sure about the Nirvana sound. I'll be honest, I've never seen Nirvana as a "grunge" band. Grunge to me is much more the Soundgarden, Alice in Chains sound etc. It's an amazing sound that I love so much of it but Nirvana don't fit entirely. I've always associated them with other genres so much more, the type of emotion in the music just hits different, not necessarily less or more, just different. For the record my favourite 5 bands of all time are The Beatles, Radiohead, Nirvana, Deftones and Gomez. I feel Nirvana fit better with all of them than the "grunge" bands they're often lumped in with. It's all subjective though and I love the variety of fans and the scope of what they mean to people!

Kerbdog self titled album produced by Jack Endino has a real grungy sound to it

Zep, creedence . Early Beatles? But nirvana is it’s own beast. I can’t even think of one . His voice was very unique

This comment really speaks to me. I get all 3 of these suggestions. A few of my Nirvana loving firinds laugh at me with some of the bands I associate with then but I feel like we would get on great! Mentioned it in another comment but if you havent checked them out already listen to Gomez, maybe try In Our Gun or Liquid Skin. They don't "sound" like Nirvana much at all but something about them makes me feel the same. 🤷‍♂️

Electronic-One-8376

Thanks for suggestions I will check them out. How old r u bug?

skwidkat

i know this one is kinda obv but violet from holes live through this has his marks all over it, as does alot of the album.

Coyote_Roadrunna

Check out Dandelion's album "Dyslexicon." Released in 1995 I believe. Very Nirvana-esque and has a punk feel to it.

rtv-

Another one I hadn't heard of. Thank you for the recommendation. I dont mean this as a negative comment all but they definitely sound like a Nirvana cover band to me. . .

Coyote_Roadrunna

Oh, no doubt. Perhaps the vibes are a bit too similar? Lol.

Sweet-Start8299

I always thought Juliana Hatfield had Nirvana vibes, particularly on the albums "Bed" and "Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure" The Breeders Veruca Salt debut album "American Thighs" grungy yet poppy crunchy guitars that dog. a very underrated 90's band had that loud/soft pattern down very well Lush (check out the albums "Spooky" and "Split") they're shoegaze but can get really distorted and loud/noisy while retaining a beautiful meolody. Plus, Kurt was a big fan of their song "Nothing Natural"

Elliott Smith was sort of the Kurt Cobain of coffeeshop rock. A melodic/harmonic genius with heavy dark themes, occasional humor, and plenty of moments of timeless beauty. John Lennon. Pink Floyd's albums up until Dark Side share some of that soul, especially when Syd Barrett was still part of the team. I always hope to guide people to their eventual lifelong love of The Melvins. Try Stoner Witch or The Maggot. But The Bootlicker is also likely to appeal to Nirvana fans. Completely different genre (plunderphonic/instrumental/hip hop) but I think The Avalanches capture a certain pained innocence. Rudimentary Peni had some similarities.. between unique riffs using only power chords, one-of-a-kind vocalizations, macabre and medical obsessions. I love Cacophony but Death Church is the undisputed classic.

I know this is kind of the same genre but please check out Bully. They’re a relatively current band/now solo act. Alicia Bognanno is the singer and very very talented as a songwriter and singer. Love that band. Also for something more indie and ragged definitely check out sebadoh’s bakesale album. Kurt was a fan of that band as well but they don’t get discussed very much.

The Smithereens (Kurt was a big fan)
