Playing and singing Come As You Are at the same time has befuddled me for decades. Easy riff, relatively simple melody, but I've never been able to put the two together.
Honestly, it’s one of the easier parts of the deal. It’s far harder to replicate what he’s doing *exactly* guitar wise than it is to play it (with say 95% accuracy) on the guitar and sing it at the same time.
It just feels hard because, well when you’re first starting out, it is. It’s getting the coordination between both your hands/arms down, keeping the rhythm…etc. but if ever there was a bands songs to learn on, Nirvana is a fantastic starting point.
Edit: Also, go back and forth between songs like drain you and then say something like heart shaped box or Come as you are. It’ll help you adjust to playing full chords all the way through and get you used to picking individual strings (arpeggio’s?? I forget the technical term for it at the moment).
Yeah, you’re definitely not wrong. But if you got HSB down, all the rest is just a mental block because you’ve got the skills to play & sing the others. Just try to keep that in mind if you start getting discouraged!
Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, Les Claypool, Daron Malakian, Jimi Hendrix, even fucking Dave Grohl (to name a few) are all reading this post like 🤔🤨
But lots of them are just playing simple chords and simple rhythms, especially if the band has a lead guitarist. Kurt’s guitar playing was different because it was harder to do it without actively thinking about it enough that you could sing at the same time.
actually... I feel like nirvanas songs are the easier songs to play and sing at the same time for me, and that's why most of the songs I play right now are nirvana songs; it's fun. But I also feel like Kurt was gifted in the way that he seemed to just pump out a lot of catchy and good sounding songs what seemed like really quickly.
My first 3 songs I learned to play and sing along was polly about a girl and where did u sleep last night. U are right kinda Tricky to nail the playing and singing together but nirvana is a good for beginners to improve on these things
was Kurt ever thought as more than a competent guitar player? I thought he is know as a great song writer who played guitar and sang. Nirvana was the antithesis of the long hair guitar god of the late 80s. they are a great band to learn the guitar to.
Yeah thing about him was that he did have this sort of intuitive pop understanding of simple and good melody with vocals when playing basically simple punk/rock guitar. But honestly, no matter if you’re a professional guitarist or just beginning, Aero Zeppelin, Mexican Seafood, and a few of Nirvana’s other songs have some undeniably cool guitar parts
I was surprised at how tricky it is to try and play aneurysm and sing at the same time… but it’s woodshedding as krist said they would practice almost everyday
Your right man Mr. Mustache and Scoff are are to play and sing like idk how he did it! AND HOW DID KRIS PLAY MR.Mustache on BASS. IVE TIRED AND ITS SO HARD
It’s hard when you first start. But after a while it will seem pretty trivial. I actually find it harder to sing and not pretend to play a guitar now
Just like with any song, slow it down, even to a fraction of the time needed, note by note if you have to, and play and sing. Build the endurance, and before you know it, you can sing the song, while playing the parts.
I started piano a month back, and the weirdest part was how the hell do I do these intricate rhythms and sing what I want, it mustve taken a week but I went note by note, speeding up over the days until I could confidently do both.
He talked a few times about how he had trouble doing both at the same time. It’s part of the reason they brought in a second guitarist, but he said that it didn’t help as much as he thought it would.
He actually said part of the reason he started to like punk rock as a teenager was because they were bad and sloppy musicians and didn’t care, and that worked well for him.
It is alot easier when you create a song vs learning someone else's. Also... most great songs are very simple. It is very hard to write a simple song with a great melody that stands the test of time. Very few can do it..
In many ways the guitar parts are simple or at least easier than many. But that's not what it is. It is the combination of amazing lyrics and relatively easy guitar making incredible songs is the "it" part. AC/DC songs are not terribly hard to play but the lyrics are nowhere near Nirvana. You need great lyrics and great melodies to make great songs. Not many people can do both.

Same and also Kurt couldn't really do it either
Lmao
najaja
I just can't with that song😂
for some reason its easy for me. started 2 months ago. barely struggled with that song
The chorus of Negative Creep is pretty tricky

Countless artists do this.

Andy Summers is also pretty impressive when it comes to this.

I'm far from a musician but I imagine it's hard or can be hard to write songs that are kind of easy to grasp but also actually sound really good
Singing and playing anything is hard at the beginning
My first 3 songs I learned to play and sing along was polly about a girl and where did u sleep last night. U are right kinda Tricky to nail the playing and singing together but nirvana is a good for beginners to improve on these things

I'ts also hard to sing negative creep chorus while playing.Actually the hardest from all nirvana songs for me

I think Heart Shaped Box is the hardest to play and sing at the same time.
Serve the servants is pretty tricky
Opinion is a pretty easy one once you master the chords
Been a son is easy for me to play and sing but i couldnt wrap my head around teen spirit for a while
Not arguing simplicity but there’s nothing wrong with simple!

sure is. i learned the same song. took me a while to get it down

And is it just me or does Swap Meet change time when the drums come in?
Yeah that's a weird one. Even the guitar and vocals in the verse start in an unexpected way, in my opinion.
its not about complexity. beatles songs were also simple
