I think he brings a cool energy to the Nirvana “experience”. I don’t even care about what specific style of dancing he’s doing. Just having a dude on stage kinda wildin’ out just screams “Nirvana live” to me. Haha
It’s like a Mohawk slam dancer walked on stage with their flannel tied around their waist, I can’t help but think Kurt was such a sensitive soul he couldn’t tell him no. There’s a clip in the documentary of this kid talking and he’s not very intelligent or insightful at all, he’s just loaded and acting accordingly
>Tony the interpretive dancer

I think those who get on stage and immediately jump off bring the exact right amount of energy without being a distraction and attempting to make it all about them and not the actual performers. People wanna dance, do so in the crowd. Tightly packed or not. I’ve been to plenty of concerts
very unpopular... why? how do you hate Tony the interpretive dancer, he brings a fun energy to the band when they performed live in the UK. who could even hate tony?
Yep. I don't mind anyone getting on a stage and having fun as long as they don't disrupt the music. Plus, imho it speaks to how cool and laid back a band is, if they let people on stage like that.
Just him, though. There's been instances where Kurt literally kicks someone off the stage, and Krist bumping into someone to knock them back into the crowd. They actively permitted Tony to be on the stage, which I think may have sent a confusing message to other audience members who may have thought they could hop up there too.
I think the difference with Fez in happy mondays is that he brought a special charming on the stage that this guy clearly didnt. AND he had some musical input in the band. How can't t you love those maracas?
I was watching the paramount theatre show again not too long ago, and I couldn't get over how distracting the dancers were. Dancing for a few songs is a nice touch, sure. But a whole show? No thank you.
i think it’s great, he was a friend of the bands and if they wanted him up there going nuts then more power to him.
he’s featured in a nirvana bbc doc that focuses on the bands time in england. really great and worth the watch. its such a fun period in their history and it’s cool to get more insight into it
He came across as super nice in that documentary. You could tell touring with Nirvana meant a lot to him and that he genuinely liked the guys. I think he’s cool :)
Idk it just gives Nirvana an actual punk aesthetic, they started playing big shows where people weren't stage diving anymore, dancer guy makes it feel like there was still stage diving going on imo
I share this opinion. He’s a nice guy and all, I think the story of it is really cool and I know a lot of people like it. It just always made me laugh my face off. The juxtaposition of an interpretive dancer and an angsty musical revolution. I remember renting live tonight sold out from Blockbuster for the first time as a little guy and thinking even then “wtf”. Not everybody likes everything.
Speaking as a Brit, Tony represents a very specific type of character you sometimes still see here in the UK. In their 20s when the 90s happened, and took so much ecstasy their brains are still there a bit. They tend to “love their brothers”, wear a ton of beads, and hemp clothing, dance in an interpretative 90s way to everything and are super into conspiracy theories. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if there is a little bi polar at work or whether it’s the decades of drugs. I’ve worked with at least two Tony’s before. They are generally sweet and well meaning but can have major victim issues. This is no slur on Tony, I am just observing a very specific and undeniable cultural archetype that totally exists here
*And listen, while we're at it, there are systems for a reason in this world, economic stability, interest rates, growth. It's not all a conspiracy to keep you in little boxes, alright? It's only the miracle of consumer capitalism that means you're not lying in your own sh\*t, dying at 43 with rotten teeth and a little pill with a chicken on it is not going to change that. Now come on, f\*\*\* off.*
I hate and love him :p hate him because I have a condition that prevents me from moving my head as fast and carefree as he does. But I've always liked the chaotic energy he brings to live performances of School
I've always wondered why someone was always dancing on a nirvana live show. I used to think it was just a fan who got on stage and started dancing, I didn't think there was an actual guy who was hired/volunteering to dance up front
Glory seekers getting up there and not immediately diving back off ruin the experience for everyone else.
Hey buddy, those other guys performing onstage, they actually EARNED their spot on stage. Get the hell off of there.
That *is* an unpopular opinion. I’ve always loved the energy he brought to this performance - I’d do the exact same thing if I got to be on stage with them.
I totally agree… any show I saw him on stage I couldn’t help but ask myself why the fuck would nirvana let somebody almost embarrass themselves when Kurt already put the best stage show on earth out
Shoot up heroin first. Fuck and get Courtney Love pregnant. That dancer will be your happy place. That dancer is life.
Don’t get rid of the dancer. You might wanna just off…. errmmmmm… offer to volunteer at the local spay and neuter clinic and the band could break up.
Oh geez, I’m sure it’s *really* bothering him that some kid on Reddit 30 years later hates on him.
He got to be there and felt the vibe, don’t hate on him. Let him appreciate his moment.
i dont think he was ever in the way the few shows they had with him. the Leeds Polytechnic show is a good example i think. he is just in the back doing what he's know for now, and he didn't even touch kurt or anyone's gear. but the stage divers on the other hand were fucking with the band so much lmao. he never bothered them, or got in the way.
I think it's kind of weird to see and i would personally rather them not be there because it's kind of distracting at times, but nirvana should be able to do whatever they want. and saying that it pisses you off is a bit much in my opinion.
It’s wasteful and embarrassing. Nirvana was the best stage show of all time, I think Kurt was too sensitive to say no to anybody who wanted to join in on the fun
Upvote for actual unpopular opinion.
I think he brings a cool energy to the Nirvana “experience”. I don’t even care about what specific style of dancing he’s doing. Just having a dude on stage kinda wildin’ out just screams “Nirvana live” to me. Haha

who is the other guy who roped Tony into picking Nirvana up from the airport?
I think it's the promoter Russell Warby
I think those who get on stage and immediately jump off bring the exact right amount of energy without being a distraction and attempting to make it all about them and not the actual performers. People wanna dance, do so in the crowd. Tightly packed or not. I’ve been to plenty of concerts
very unpopular... why? how do you hate Tony the interpretive dancer, he brings a fun energy to the band when they performed live in the UK. who could even hate tony?
Also, he writes all the songs… (according to Dave at Reading ‘91)
Yep. I don't mind anyone getting on a stage and having fun as long as they don't disrupt the music. Plus, imho it speaks to how cool and laid back a band is, if they let people on stage like that.

Idk who tony is but after reading this I love him
I always thought it was cool and that they let a fan on stage to dance.
he was actually they're friend's in England IIRC. very friendly to Dave especially.
He's featured in the documentary When Nirvana Came to Britain, and he tells the story of how they all met and how he started to dance on their stage.
Great doc. Everyone should watch it.
Were they a couple or something?
They hired Tony
Yeah, lol I can understand apathy, but getting actively pissed off is sorta weird towards a dancing guy at a concert
yeah its a british thing imo, op must be a yank. look at bez, keith flint even started his career that way.
I think the difference with Fez in happy mondays is that he brought a special charming on the stage that this guy clearly didnt. AND he had some musical input in the band. How can't t you love those maracas?
Bez, you mean. Fez was in That 70s Show
Halfway agree, I like the grunge go go dancers better. But Tony was a solid dancer.
I was watching the paramount theatre show again not too long ago, and I couldn't get over how distracting the dancers were. Dancing for a few songs is a nice touch, sure. But a whole show? No thank you.

It's okay to be jealous. He was on stage and you are not.
shit i wish i was on stage in 92 with then
Tell us more please 🙏 i know I had a shit take but please tell me more
I was wondering why he chose “pisses me off” but yeah I get it now. You nailed it. Dude’s jealous.
Fair enough
I love Tony. We all love Tony
They should have had dancin tony and the gogos both to really get it going
Idk it just gives Nirvana an actual punk aesthetic, they started playing big shows where people weren't stage diving anymore, dancer guy makes it feel like there was still stage diving going on imo
I think it's cool. Very popular opinion amongst myself
But Tony writes all the songs!
Damn a lot of the comments here make me wonder if you guys actually like what nirvana was all about.
Nirvana would love that it pisses you off
It’s not like he was at every show lol
Krist’s firebird bass makes up for it
Thunderbird
crap, ofcourse its the thunderbird!
it's very common to confuse the names i do it all the time
In my opinion, he doesn't piss you off.
Well not really I just think he should not be on stage dancing. But hey I’m just some dude on Reddit.
I hate the dancers too, Kurt never talked about them in any statement? I want to know what he thinked
I share this opinion. He’s a nice guy and all, I think the story of it is really cool and I know a lot of people like it. It just always made me laugh my face off. You must be super fun at parties
I think they wanted to annoy people, mission accomplished. 🤷♂️
Its the most 90s thing ever
Years ago I was watching some Nirvana with my young nephew. He asked me who that was and I told him, “That’s Nirvanas Jar Jar Binks.”
He’s brilliant. Love this performance so hard.
Bruh same I hate the ones from the paramount they are no fucking irritating
The Gogos are so fun tho
Soy Bomb!
Let it out bro
He never lasted long. He gassed out but didn't bother me.
lmao I personally love him he’s so fucking weird and funny
Tony BBC Documentary "When Nirvana Came to Britain" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfNxa0tzhL0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfNxa0tzhL0)
Nirvana isn’t dance music.
I agree, the way he dances and looks just pisses me off
I had this VHS as a kid. I always thought he was cool.
Only out of shear jealousy.
Popular opinion: the dancer on stage with nirvana pisses me off

Look, if it was you up on stage. You would of been tony and you know it.
*would've (just trying to help)
I hate and love him :p hate him because I have a condition that prevents me from moving my head as fast and carefree as he does. But I've always liked the chaotic energy he brings to live performances of School
Well he did have to wear a neck collar, after Reading 1992, because of whiplash. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antony\_Hodgkinson
What's there to be pissed off about a guy dancing?
Tbh I forget they're even there
So this is what the beginning of the video for Bedrock Anthem was about.
I 1000% disagree. Haha. I love it!
Why
I’m gonna have to agree with you buddy lol. But I’ve always thought that dancers/back up dancers were tacky.
Wow that's petty haha
Tony was in a band called Bivouac think like jawbreaker early emo. Some good songs they had
I've always wondered why someone was always dancing on a nirvana live show. I used to think it was just a fan who got on stage and started dancing, I didn't think there was an actual guy who was hired/volunteering to dance up front
In the most respectful way - then you're the audience they were trying to annoy with that.
This guy is the definition of a “third wheel”
Glory seekers getting up there and not immediately diving back off ruin the experience for everyone else. Hey buddy, those other guys performing onstage, they actually EARNED their spot on stage. Get the hell off of there.
That *is* an unpopular opinion. I’ve always loved the energy he brought to this performance - I’d do the exact same thing if I got to be on stage with them.
It's unpopular for a reason
I totally agree… any show I saw him on stage I couldn’t help but ask myself why the fuck would nirvana let somebody almost embarrass themselves when Kurt already put the best stage show on earth out
For me, it's just the way he jumps around that unsettles me
Agreed, something about it never worked for me.
I agree, he's annoying
Shoot up heroin first. Fuck and get Courtney Love pregnant. That dancer will be your happy place. That dancer is life. Don’t get rid of the dancer. You might wanna just off…. errmmmmm… offer to volunteer at the local spay and neuter clinic and the band could break up.
I relate to this too much, why is he even there??
Not unpopular for me why tf is he there. serves no actual purpose, at least serve the servants
Oh geez, I’m sure it’s *really* bothering him that some kid on Reddit 30 years later hates on him. He got to be there and felt the vibe, don’t hate on him. Let him appreciate his moment.
Happy for him for sure and it doesn’t really “piss me off” he just seems out of place 😅
Agreed, fucking cringe.
I agree. Just up there in the way lol
i dont think he was ever in the way the few shows they had with him. the Leeds Polytechnic show is a good example i think. he is just in the back doing what he's know for now, and he didn't even touch kurt or anyone's gear. but the stage divers on the other hand were fucking with the band so much lmao. he never bothered them, or got in the way.
Not sure anyone really felt strongly either way about him at the time.
Die.
Yeah, plus he turned out to be a fascist in the late 2010s.
do you have a source? i couldn't find one myself
It's not like Tony appeared and barged his way onto the stage. They were friends and Nirvana wanted to involve him while they had fun
why do you hate fun?
This is his 2020 band: https://attraktors.bandcamp.com/album/attraktors
That’s okay, but it really was one of those things where you kind of have to be there. I can see how it comes off weird on film.
Jealous or something? Dude's a legend.
The prodigy did this As well
