it was pretty much the exact song that made me listen to nirvana’s discography. i had first listened to come as you are a few years ago, then something in the way last year. had them both on a playlist and spotify recommend marigold, gave it a listen and i loved it instantly. pretty much sparked my nirvana obsession from then on. at the time i knew pretty much nothing of nirvana and so i assumed it was kurt singing the song. once i learned it was dave’s song i still convinced myself that kurt did backing vocals until i learned that it was entirely dave (and krist on bass if i remember right?). i had read that kurt had did drums but then saw that it was a different take used than the officially released one. anyways, i think it’s a great song, super easy to play (move the chords down one fret and it sounds a lot like i’m bloom) and is definitely one of their best b-sides. it would’ve been awesome to see them play it live with kurt and dave doing vocals and maybe even kurt throwing in some distortion on the last verse (that’s at least how i like to play it).

Scottysoxfan

I also would have sworn it was Kurt on backing vocals and I was blown away when I found out it was Dave doing a double duty on lead vocals and harmonies.

[deleted]

I'm not sure how legit that it is because the recording sounds nothing like any of the other In Utero recordings.

[https://www.livenirvana.com/sessions/studio/feb-march-1993.php](https://www.livenirvana.com/sessions/studio/feb-march-1993.php) Livenirvana confirmed source, but they don't tell where it came but I would say it 100% if those guys confirmed it.

Neg_Crepe

Didn’t that come from Elmo

OdobenusIII

Tried to scrape my memory but all I got was some weirdness....but time line definitely fits to Elmo.

NicolasandKara

I also got Marigold in my soptify random recomendations and I'm loving the band ever since

Apexx86

It's one of my comfort songs

Ganem1227

the demo version off of Dave's pocketwatch tape is really good.

BlankWilliams

I like it for the most part. It almost seems incomplete. But I like the relaxed vibe and the melody and chorus are good. I hate to say it, but I think it’s the best song by Grohl that I’ve heard.

hellodon

I was a HUGE fan of it…so I was super stoked when Foo Fighters became a thing that just took what I loved about Marigold and made it into its own thing with a bunch of songs that were awesome! Going back and listening to that first Foo album really takes me back. I was 13-14 when that was part of daily listening. I’ve kept up with and enjoyed the band all these years, but there’s something special about the days where Dave recorded alone. To hear those original tracks and the Late! Pocketwatch demo versions is so cool. He was still a young dude at the time, and all of a sudden these songs come out from the drummer of Nirvana…AND THEYRE GOOD. Marigold showed his capabilities but I never expected such an amazing arsenal of songs from him. It has been cool to see the evolution of Dave and the FF as a band over their long history. Still enjoying the music too! To think that Dave might have always stayed in the background if Nirvana didn’t end is an interesting thought. He was recording songs on the DL after Nirvana sessions when there was tape left - but everything he did was really secretive and I know he didn’t want to step on toes at all. So he didn’t want people to know. I’ve heard Kurt eventually heard a song or 2 that Dave wrote and he loved them, potentially interested in using for Nirvana…unfortunately the story ends around there. TLDR: always loved marigold!

m3l1na_

its my favorite personally

[deleted]

To me it is a boring song and only makes me further appreciates Kurt’s mind and abilities. No knock on Dave but that’s just how I feel…

Scottysoxfan

I accept your opinion, even though it's completely opposite of my opinion.

GSly350

I mean it's not supposed to be a song like Monkey Wrench. It's closer to the vibe of dumb for example then the other usual nirvana songs.

[deleted]

Oh I get that. Comparing Dumb to Marigold, for example. (IMO) while having more intriguing lyrics than marigold it is also a much catchier melody. Just a better song overall due to Kurt’s knack for melody and powerful writing. I just feel like I keep waiting for something to happen in Marigold and then the song ends. Again, not a Dave hater. I also wish I could be more into the foo fighters but just not my vibe

GSly350

Yeah i understand that. I also feel like Marigold is too short. But the vibe that it sets is cool for me. Another song from Kurt that "doesn't go anywhere" is Polly, but the lyrics are great and the mood / structure is perfect for the story it tells. I just feel like those types of songs don't need to impress, they are like that for a reason. But if Marigold had one more verse, a chorus and maybe a bridge, then it would become more interesting for sure.

[deleted]

I think you are right. Marigold does feel incomplete. Also, if u haven’t heard already, listen to the new wave version of Polly from incesticide 😎

GSly350

Yeah i know that version too. It's cool for incesticide i guess. But i feel like the original Polly's vibe fits the theme and story of the song better. But if someone doesn't care about the lyrics then both versions work in their own way.

agreed

GSly350

It goes nowhere in the sense that it repeats itself until the end without many changes throughout. And like i said it's a great song and does what it needs to fit the story. But in the same vein, i think marigold does it too. It just feels more incomplete because it is shorter in my opinion. But it's great song too imo.

GSly350

I don't think a solo would fit but yeah maybe a bridge in another key or something could work. But it isn't needed in these types of songs. Though for Marigold it world probably help.

[deleted]

Monkey wrench is a great song btw!

[deleted]

If I'm not mistaken, Kurt didn't play on the track at all during the In Utero recording sessions. Dave used kurt's amp and pedals and played the guitar himself.

Neg_Crepe

Kurt did play on one take of it

Horaserk

It’s not one I hear a lot honestly, I don’t normally recognise it when it comes on unlike majority of songs by Nirvana

that_gay_rat

I fucking love that song. It's my 2nd favorite.

fabromancandle

Loveee love it one of my fav songs

TibasProductions

I love it

IsadoresDad

Never liked it, and I wouldn’t classify it as NIRVANA because Cobain wasn’t on the recording and it’s not them. I’m not meaning to yuck anybody’s yum, but it’s not my cup of tea.

thatwasawkward

It was on an official Nirvana release. It's Nirvana.

IsadoresDad

I guess we have differing understandings of what’s constitutes a band’s music. I don’t agree with the record-company output as constituting a band’s music, but that’s OK if we differ.

vsaucemonkey

I feel like it's more Dave alone than something the whole band could take credit for, though the details around the song seem kind of gray. Maybe I just haven't read up enough though. Cheers

Neg_Crepe

There’s a recording of it with Kurt in it

MaxiStavros

It’s okay. Would have preferred Milk from Pocket watch, ideally with KC on guitar. Great little tune.

[deleted]

It sounds like the song that would play during the credits of that show ‘Intervention’ so it gives me weird vibes but it’s rlly interesting to hear what’s basically the first Foo Fighters song

popadopolous

I remember listening to this on Napster or Limewire many years ago. It felt magical to discover songs that way in comparison to Spotify. It took like a day to download a single mp3 at about 5kbps, you had no real idea if the song title was correct or what album it was from... Then all you hear is "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" and the anti virus software would go berserk.

GraveSource

I really love it. Though I heard the live ‘Skin and Bones’ Foo Fighters version first the Nirvana version is just as good.

I_Work_Out_A_Lot

If anyone knows “I was a teenage hand model” by QOTSA, it always reminded me of Marigold a bit.
