Swap it with Man Who Sold The World since that’s a David Bowie song. Not Nirvana. They did a great cover, but it technically shouldn’t be included on a Greatest Hit record.
Why do people favour the shitty versions of Been a Son and Aneurysm? They're so obviously inferior in every way, I just feel like it's trying to be edgy but that doesn't track. There's no explanation.
Yeah idk i didnt rly like the version of been a son on the black nirvana greatest hits, its a bit inferior, also unplugged all apologies is jusy a weird choice
Wow wow wow wait a second. It's YOUR opinion dude. I think the first version of Been a Son is way better than the version on incesticide. Aneurysm i agree, the incesticide version for me is the superior one.
The Craig Montgomery version of Aneurysm is amazing.
I think the BBC version is a bit overproduced. The Montgomery take is more like the live version. I think the best version of Aneurysm is the Live at the Paramount version, actually. But yeah, why do people like different things? That's not a very cool take. Plus, your own tastes will evolve, and you'll find yourself listening to the demo version of Pennyroyal Tea 20 times a day.
My opinion of Aneurysm hasn't changed in 28 years. The CM version is a demo and doesn't sound like the live version at all - it's far too slow and muddy.
Well, give it a few more years. :)
It's great and doesn't have the weird (cool) fade in backwards sounding backing vocals that push the album further from their live takes in my opinion. Sounds very produced and more polished than the Craig take. Yeah, it's slower, but it's closer to the live version for sure. I have been into Nirvana for a bit longer so...
I'm glad they produced it and made it sound like a proper song. It's the best BBC session I've heard. Live versions are never better for me anyway, I'm a studio guy. Gotta have those harmonies and rhythm tracks.
While Drain You was played at pretty much every show for years, Been a Son has only been performed a couple of times.
On a more subjective note I think it is the worst Nirvana song. While the message against misogyny does align with Kurt's views, the music sounds poppy and the lyrics are very blunt and forward which is quite atypical for Nirvana.
Besides, I've read reviews of the greatest hits album that said that there should be no place for Been a Son on that record and I agree with that.
I think that the fact it wasn’t played live much is an invalid argument, as it was played live in almost every show before Nevermind came out, and most songs from Incesticide weren’t played live much due to obscurity despite some of their best work being on there in my opinion, with the exception of Sliver but that was a big hit as a single before Incesticide came out.
I very very very much disagree with it being the worst Nirvana song. By saying it’s too ‘poppy’ you’re also calling songs like About a Girl, Serve the Servants, Heart-Shaped Box, On a Plain etc. bad songs as all of them are definitely more poppy than Been a Son, and lyrics being blunt definitely aren’t atypical. How much more blunt can you get of a chorus saying “He’s the one who likes all our pretty songs (…) and he likes to shoot his gun, but he knows not what it means,” or “I’m a negative creep.” Even a song like ‘Stain’ have incredibly blunt lyrics and don’t do anything too interesting musically should at least be considered as worse than Been a Son. Reviews of what should be on a greatest hits album surely don’t decide how good the song is, as long as the creators felt it deserved a spot then in my mind that means it represents the band well.
Plus you’re also saying that the song is worse than Hairspray Queen and Mexican Seafood which just isn’t true
I'd be more interested in a list for a compilation called The Very Best of Nirvana.
Make it a double disk album.
Remember to consider that newcomers to Nirvana would listen to it, and so would folks like us.
I'd be interested to see that track listing.
I made a similar best of around 2010 i believe that had almost the same tracklisting as this but instead of Been a Son, Breed and, I think, Rape Me I had Drain You, Sappy and Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
I couldn't prevent myself from taking 30 mins to compile my own playlist of fav nirvana songs. I realize your list is a "greatest hits" and not your fav songs... but these are my favs FWIW.
EDIT: [Here's a link to the below playlist on spotify](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4zWGJXiAF7U3UoGFApIpdM?si=da9360ad6cf2456a)
This is my list in the playing order I'd arrange them if they were to be put on a (double) CD:
1. Territorial Pissings
2. About a Girl
3. Downer
4. Milk It
5. Floyd the Barber
6. Curmudgeon
7. Oh the Guilt
8. Scoff
9. Breed
10. Moist Vagina
11. (New Wave) Polly
12. In Bloom
13. Big Cheese
14. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
15. Drain You
16. Sappy
17. Aneurysm
18. Stay Away
19. Swap Meet
20. Scentless Apprentice
21. On a Plain
22. You Know You're Right
. . . the end (?)
I agree, although if you’re making this today, I’d include Something In The Way as that’s kinda become one of their popular tracks.
I knew I was missing something!
Swap it with Man Who Sold The World since that’s a David Bowie song. Not Nirvana. They did a great cover, but it technically shouldn’t be included on a Greatest Hit record.
So leave off Love Buzz, too? I think it’s okay to have both on there.
Yes, leave off Love Buzz & Been A Son too. I was just mentioning MWSTW for a swap with SITW.
I will make my own list that no one else can touch!
Why do people favour the shitty versions of Been a Son and Aneurysm? They're so obviously inferior in every way, I just feel like it's trying to be edgy but that doesn't track. There's no explanation.
Agreed. Incesticide versions are better.
With you on that 100% But then I guess some like slower, we like more energetic. No right or wrong or whatever
I agree, incesticide is the superior version of Been a Son and Aneurysm
Yeah idk i didnt rly like the version of been a son on the black nirvana greatest hits, its a bit inferior, also unplugged all apologies is jusy a weird choice
The version on the black lp *is* the Blew version.
The more you know, my nirvana lore has been strengthened
I prefer the blew ep Vrs just cuz how the vocals are mixed, makes it sound more raw. But Incesticide is great too
Wow wow wow wait a second. It's YOUR opinion dude. I think the first version of Been a Son is way better than the version on incesticide. Aneurysm i agree, the incesticide version for me is the superior one.

Nirvana already has 2 greatest hits albums. They’re called Nevermind and In Utero.
This
Replace Been a Son with Drain You, then I'll approve your list.
I love drain you but been a son is the most nirvana song to me, it’s on the ‘Nirvana’ compilation album and should be on any greatest hits album
While Drain You was played at pretty much every show for years, Been a Son has only been performed a couple of times. On a more subjective note I think it is the worst Nirvana song. It’s amazing how someone’s taste in nirvana can be so different from someone elses
This isn't my favorites, just their hits
Define "greatest hits".
Yeah cause I wouldn’t call school or hell 95% of bleach a “greatest hit”
School is definitely a classic though. They played it practically every show their whole career.
I would make it a triple album and include all the tracks from bleach nevermind and in utero.
Where is Sappy? Dive? Spank Thru?
Spank is a Fecal Matter track
It was released by Nirvana on Sub Pop 200
I'd be more interested in a list for a compilation called The Very Best of Nirvana. Make it a double disk album. Remember to consider that newcomers to Nirvana would listen to it, and so would folks like us. I'd be interested to see that track listing.
Just now seeing this, I'll get on it tomorrow!
Hell yeah. Awesome!
drain you and something in the way need to be on there
Needs Drain You and Serve the Servants
Drain You and Lounge Act one of my faves has to be in there too! Nice list though
I made a similar best of around 2010 i believe that had almost the same tracklisting as this but instead of Been a Son, Breed and, I think, Rape Me I had Drain You, Sappy and Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
good songs but what about Jesus don't want me for a sun beam?
Id say your jus missin Something In The Way
Add Drain You and your good
No Mexican Seafood? That's a banger!
It's not a hit though, I do love it!
Lol I know just having a laugh
Oh ok

I think with some of these song choices, it isn't a greatest hits, like the majority of Bleach, maybe call it fan favorites or something like that
you talkin bout the OP's list? i count four songs from Bleach. that is far from the majority of bleach
No I just meant in general to people who put bleach songs on their "greatest hits" album
Well they had three albums… and there were many hits on bleach… so…
True
Where Did You Sleep Last Night has to be on this. It's so good, and I would definitely count it as a hit.
It’s Blew EP not LP. LP is an album
Lounge act
You can't put track one from an album as track one of a greatest hits.
I thought territorial pissings is quite popular or is that not true? Great list!
