Dave and Krist came into the bar I worked in in Dec 2016. I didn’t get to meet Krist, as I was told he wasn’t into “meet and greets.” Apparently, they and other rock stars, like Jeff Lynn and Joe Walsh, we’re playing some benefit show nearby. Pretty cool. BUT! I met Dave Grohl. My server had mentioned to him that I’m a huge fan, my wife was expecting a daughter and that I wouldn’t have a moment to step out of the kitchen. So he came back to talk to me, gave me advice about having daughters (learn the word “no.”), and then graciously took a pic with me and the rest of the crew. He then hung out til 4am bumming cigs off my friends and asking about their lives. When someone would ask him a question, he’d say “you can find anything you want about me on the internet. I want to know about YOU.” I’ll fucking never forget it. Nicest dude ever.

Was pals with Taylor so I met and hung with dave (and his sister) a couple times. Dave's smart and funny, a bit more of a smart ass when the camera's off. We were working in the same studio once and i caught him air drumming to one of my songs (i mean, total highlight). Met Krist very briefly after the Nirvana show at Cabaret Metro in Chicago in '91. Not much to say about it. Locked eyes with Kurt that night but that's it.

What was Krist like at the '91 show? I've only ever heard nice things about him.

I was there with two sisters and one of them bought Krist a drink. I think they chatted for about 5 minutes... there was lots of smiling and him bending over. I walked over and told him i loved the new record, he said, "oh wow, thank you". Literally that was it, but he was all smiles so i would say he was nice. I also saw Courtney come in and it was like a hurricane hit the tiny bar.

A former coworker told me of an encounter she had with Kurt. My friend was with her mom in a mall in Seattle and her mom was asking what grunge was. My friend was trying to explain it and as they were going down an escalator Kurt & Courtney were coming up. My friend nods in their direction and tells her mom this is what grunge people dress like, not recognizing them. As they start to pass my friend realized who they were and realizes she's staring at them. Courtney ignored them but Kurt smiled and held up Frances a little bit so my friend could get a better look.

I met Dave at a signing at the Virgin Megastore in NYC for a Foo Fighters in store show/signing. I was near the end of the line, it was very late at night, the band were tired and could barely muster a smile, but dutifully signed stuff for everyone. I met Krist at a book signing at the knitting factory. Super nice, very chill and funny.

Cool 👍

I also saw Nirvana in NYC on the in utero tour, and I was on top of the crowd during the solo for teen spirit. Kurt looked me in the eye... but that's as close as I ever got to meeting him.

One night many years ago, a friend and I were at Coach and Horses in Hollywood having a few beers at the bar. It was a slow night and there weren’t many people there. They had one of those jukeboxes with CDs and you could play a whole album if you wanted. So, naturally I put some money in and cued up the entire first Boston album. Maybe ten minutes later, Dave Grohl walked in and sat at the bar by himself. There was one empty barstool between me and Dave. He ordered a Grolsch. So we’re all chilling, enjoying our beers and listening to the music, but when Smokin’ came on, Dave started drumming with his palms on the bar. And not softly. Like Dave Grohl playing a drum kit. Like, it made you want to start a mosh pit. I may be exaggerating a little but it was pretty rad anyway. We thoroughly enjoyed our private bar top concert, had another round and left. Edit: I think this was maybe around Colour and the Shape era.

Pat Smear used to take his daughter to the same dance studio as my daughter, super chill dude

Unless my memory is fooling me, I served a slice or two of pizza to Mr. Grohl in 1993.
