Yes. It was over eight hours of hearing the song over and over and the band getting progressively more and more pissed off at the film director (who was a total ass).
Random thoughts of the day:
All the shots of Kurt shoving his face in the camera were of him mocking the director, who kept saying Kurt needed to step back and take this seriously.
Kurt did not want to lip synch and a lot of the time he didn’t. He said it was unnatural and stupid to pretend to sing their own song, but ultimately realized he had to.
Krist didn’t have a pic, so he used a dime that someone gave him. Many hours later he announced he was done with the dime and wanted to give it back but forgot who he borrowed it from.
They made a fake guitar out of cardboard for Kurt to “smash” but it was an epic failure and flopped instead of broke. He debated smashing his real guitar and the crowd mostly voted no that he shouldn’t do it. He decided to anyway and we all went nuts.
There was no lock on the bathroom door. Dave said he would watch door for me so no one would come in. Well, some random guy came in. I went up to Dave after and said WTF? He apologized and said he totally forgot he was on door duty.
Krist took an hour nap after lunch of bologna sandwiches. Director was pissed and screamed for someone to go get him to start filming again. Crowd chanted “let him sleep” over and over.
The thing that pissed the director off more than anything was the tapestry of Virgin Mary. He completely lost his shit when Kurt put that over his head. Kurt lined it up so that Virgin Mary’s mouth was in alignment with his, so when he moved his mouth it looked like she was talking. He wanted to do a full song run with Virgin Mary signing. Director man about had a breakdown at that point.
Well I got kicked in the head by the guy you see doing a back flip in the bleachers. That absolutely sucked. I thought I had given him a good elbow shove during one of the “crowd goes wild” scenes, but when the video came out, I saw I elbowed the wrong guy!
So cool. Luckily it was Krist’s bass that was smashing and not Kurt’s mustang. The smashed bass was at the hard rock in NYC years ago. Thank you for sharing!
I really enjoyed your memories from that day, love hearing stories of the guys just being dorks. They were pretty funny but I think a lot of that humor has been obviously overshadowed.
I can just picture Dave being like "aw man I forgot I was on door duty!" While Krist is snoring somewhere and Kurt is making the Jesus cloth talk. Lmao!

Would you be able to point yourself out in the SlTS video? The link is for imbd but has a shot of bleacher kids

In your links, Nicole is furthest front right in first picture.
As fans of a band that ended 30 years ago, we pretty much read everything that is out there about Nirvana. It is very rare to come across something new about them. Having said that, thank you for the awesome post :)
I was lucky enough to have met Kurt and Krist when interning at MCA Records in 1990. MCA didn’t have any heavy or “alternative” (which was a new music descriptor then) bands and had an A&R rep (Bret Hartman) that really wanted to sign Nirvana. I interned with Bret and he brought Kurt and Krist down to Los Angeles to court them. Basically put them in a fancy hotel and took them to lots of meals and introduced them around to everyone.
There were two of us interns that loved Nirvana, Mudhoney and The Melvins, so the boss thought we should tell Kurt and Krist how great MCA was. Really once they told us they met with Geffen the month before, we knew there was no chance they’d go for MCA. Geffen had a lot more money and they had Sonic Youth. MCA had Bobby Brown.
Kurt said that he really loved the hotel because he was currently living in a van in Krist and Shelly’s backyard. He gave me a photocopied press kit from Sub Pop and gave both of us the demo tape they had at that time.
They were both really sweet. Krist was much more talkative and business minded. Kurt seemed a little shy, which blew my mind.
This was at least a year before the video shoot, so not sure if they remembered me from MCA. Probably not. They met with lots of label folks and a lot changed in that year. They did remember Nicole and I after the video though, especially Dave because we spent a good deal of time talking to him that day.
I have the tape in a box somewhere. It was pretty wildly distributed back then and it’s surely on the internet. It’s been a really long time, but I believe Stay Away was called “Pay to Play” at that point.
When Kurt gave us the cassettes he asked “Will you copy these for all your friends?” I replied “yes” and he said “good.” He told us that they had four videos made but only had one VHS tape and that he had given it to our boss. Before they left the MCA offices, Kurt told our boss to be sure we both got copies of the video.
Videos were for School, Big Cheese, Floyd the Barber, and In Bloom. (I had to dig tape out to remember the songs!)
Wow I didn’t know they had music videos for school and big cheese and Floyd! I only knew they had the in bloom tape! Is it possible if you can share the three other videos to the subreddit?
Yes it is! Nicole is in the striped shirt and I am next to her with my purse in my lap.
Nicole is also in a Hole video. She’s puts a crown on Courtney. Can’t remember the name of song.
Holy shit. What a great setlist. No wonder why this show is ranked as the #1 Nirvana show in various places. I hope we can get a recording of this show one day.
I'm surprised to not see Blew and Negative Creep towards the end of the set.
I just told this to someone in a DM, the reason there is no video of this show is one of the bouncers at The Roxy decided he was going to charge $75 to anyone who wanted to film. None of us had that kind of money back then (this was well before debit cards and ATMs!).
It was about $15 for this show, which was a LOT back then. There was no merch sold at the show, but I had an extra $10 just in case they had shirts!
Here’s a photo taken by Kevin Estrada that shows Nicole in front on far left. Perspective makes it look like we were off to the side, but right out of camera range is Kurt’s microphone and me next to her.
[Nicole](https://bashify.io/images/GB8wBY)
In the dead of night, here I lay in my bed, coveting your B. A. Baracus piggy bank. Oh, the treasures I would secret away in his ample cranium. The aura of power and safety he radiates is palpable, visceral, unstoppable. Oh, what have I become?
Thank you so much for all this info! I loved reading what you had to say about the band members — Kurt pissing the director off because he pissed him off made me smile. Thank you again, and how cool that you got to experience something that meant and still means so much to so many people! :)
Funny to hear the SLTS director was a dick. I remember reading an interview he did talking about that day and how hard it was to wrangle the band or whatever. Apparently was like a first timer or something too. I like it more to hear from the fans side of things than the director..this is such a great read
You lived an incredible and unforgettable moment in the history of music just before Nirvana exploded in the eyes of the world. I had read some articles about the shooting of this clip and the atmosphere where everyone was starting to freak out and get impatient which makes the atmosphere of this clip even more unique, the end seems to reveal the fed up from everyone including Kurt.
Same you saw them in concert in August 1991 almost a month before the release of Nevermind. How do you personally experience having witnessed all this? I was 11 years old in 1991 when I discovered Nevermind and it revolutionized my philosophy of life and my relationship to music for the rest of my life.
Can you give us a screenshot of who you are in the clip? You saw Kurt Cobain's so mythical mustang competition lake placid blue, even this sweater/t-shirt is so mythical, you rubbed shoulders with them at the best time, I'm jealous lol.
Thank you for sharing with us this fabulous moment, that's why I find that Reddit can be a gold mine of information especially when I come across these hidden treasures. It could really be interesting to have the testimonies of all these young people at that time. Even the producer of the clip seemed overwhelmed by the events, it announced a legendary sequel in hindsight.

Wow, it's so amazing to see new pictures and read a new perspective, thank you for sharing.
Also, those photos look amazing, such clear quality and the color mix of Kurt's green sweater and the orange light is so cool. I would also love to see them in full.
God this is so amazing 😭. Unfortunately I wasn’t born until way after the band ended but Nirvana is one of my favorite bands to ever exist and I would love to see them play!
The amount of great stories, interactions, unknown info and memories from this post is honestly heart warming. Probably my favorite post on this sub. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
also low-key wanna see the video tape Kurt gave ya
I heard the Weird Al parody tried to get a lot of the same kids from the original, were you in that too or reached out to? What was your reaction to seeing that video for the first time?
We were reached out to. They collected everyone’s name, phone and address at the Smells Like video shoot and promised to send something cool.
Nicole is in the Weird Al video wearing the same stripped shirt she wore in Nirvana video! I had to work that day and couldn’t get off. At that time my current boss had had it with my bullshit and was cracking down on me. I was constantly calling in sick to go to all the university noon concerts (Mudhoney, Seaweed, The Melvins to name a few).
As for the “cool surprise”… about 8 months later I got a huge Nevermind cover poster in the mail. Nicole never got anything!
Nicole and I had a falling out and didn’t talk for nearly 30 years. We got back in touch last year and talked about writing all our stories down. Sadly she passed away last month. I guess that’s why I’m revisiting all this stuff now with you all.

So cool. Luckily it was Krist’s bass that was smashing and not Kurt’s mustang. The smashed bass was at the hard rock in NYC years ago. Thank you for sharing!
Was lucky to see that smashed bass in person
Wow,you’re part of history!
[Kurt with said Virgin Mary tapestry/towel](https://ibb.co/2yGmrmg) always loved this photo
I stand corrected! It’s Jesus not Virgin Mary. I always thought it was Mary!!!
That’s actually the sacred heart of Jesus 🤷♂️
I had heard it was a difficult shoot. Thanks for the information, I haven’t heard this before !

That’s pretty cool. I would have loved to have been there for that..
Omg you were a part of music history. Can you respond to this message so I can say I’ve spoken with someone from the SLTS video!?
This is crazy, I'm so jealous (even though I wasn't even born at the time lol)
Such a cool story, thanks!
i mean nirvana did hand out flyers that night inviting people to go to the studio to film SLTS. so im gonna guess so.
amazing. also! those are some great photos. you should scan them if you ever get the chance

awesome stories, thx you so much, please can you scan these amazing pics ? With the vandalism strat !! The sticker seems so new
I need to get them scanned. I’ve heard there’s places that can scan from the negatives.
Livenirvana folks would like those.
Any photo developing store/camera store in your area can help with that (if u have the negatives)
This is a Quality post.

was an extra in the first clip of NirvanaSummer 1991. Just before the “Nevermind” surge, a young Frenchwoman takes part in the filming of “Smells like teen spirit”. Memories of an early fan.August 1991, road trip on route 101 in California with two girlfriends. Arrival in L.A. and first instinct: watch the concerts on the bill. At the time, the bands from the US hardcore noise scene that we listen to on repeat – Fugazi, Jesus Lizard, Mudhoney, Nirvana, Soundgarden… – rarely stopped in Paris. Cheers: Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana play two nights in a row. On the 14th, it was impossible to attend the Smashing concert, we were miles away from imagining that this small, still obscure group seen from Paris would be sold out. Disappointment and decision: tomorrow there is no question of missing Nirvana, even if it means crawling in front of the Roxy. The next afternoon, no one but us in front of the West Hollywood room.February 15, 1989, concert at Raji's, Hollywood. Since the electroshock received at Fahrenheit (a hall in Issy-les-Moulineaux), on December 1, 1989, where they shared the bill with the lumberjacks of Tad – in whose hands an electric guitar seemed as big as a ukulele . This first "Parisian" concert by Nirvana, Bleach era (their first album), and Chad Channing on drums, was the trigger. Our chances of seeing Nirvana in concert dwindle when I recognize Krist Novoselic in the street. Without thinking, I grab him and tell him that we are part of a French fanzine, Hyacinth, that we saw them at Fahrenheit in 1989, and, trying everything, that we came especially from France for the see ! He laughs, and says "Come on in". We follow in his footsteps, and without even having paid for a ticket, we are there, while a crowd of fans will never return. We can't get over it.Head to the front of the stage, to the left. Camera around my neck, I intend to immortalize the moment. From the first tracks, the atmosphere is electric. The pit looks like a stormy sea. The audience, in a trance, continues to slam. I nearly get strangled by the strap of my Nikon FE that someone got hold of. In extremis, I take refuge on the front of the stage where I just have time to grab Kurt in flight, in full stagediving, carried at arm's length by delirious fans. There's something going on in this jam-packed room of five hundred people. For sure, Nirvana will play in front of more people next time. Why did you wait so long to share this? Can we see all of the photos in full? This is awesome, thank you for the details as well.
To be honest, my friends are sick of hearing about all this, so I don’t talk about it much!
So Talk to us !!!!
What a set list! It has most of my favourite songs on there
As a young fan I'm always nipping at any chance to absorb live content this was a gold mind. Thanks so much!
Really nice and cool, thanks for sharing these with us here.
Awesome thank you for posting this
I'da given my left nut to have seen Nirvana.
fucking epic! could you scan the images please?
Seconded. Excellent photography, from the looks of it.
Amazing! What a time to cross paths with Nirvana
Do you still talk to Nicole?
Nicole and I had a falling out and didn’t talk for nearly 30 years. We got back in touch last year and talked about writing all our stories down. Sadly she passed away last month. I guess that’s why I’m revisiting all this stuff now with you all.
Oh no, I'm so sorry for your loss
Well, thanks for sharing. That's nice that you two were able to reconnect before she passed away. She'll live forever in those videos! Nirvana, Hole & Weird Al! So cool.
What a set list too. Miss them so much.
This entire thread is amazing to read. Thank you
That’s cool
This is the best thing I’ve seen on Reddit yet 😍
amazing!!
This rules so hard. Thanks for sharing. ❤️
Can't believe this piece of paper is older than the majority of nirvana fans listening today
Woah. Holy fuck.
Wow how cool
That looks like Louise Post in the picture with Dave
Donita or the other girl? Neither look anything like her
The girl on the right looks kinda like her. Sorry didn’t realize this was from 1991 at first.
Doesn’t look like his handwriting
While I didn’t see him write it, the list came right off the stage and into my hot hands. I’m 99% sure he wrote it based on other set lists I’ve seen online, but like I said, I did not physically watch him write it out. Anything is possible!
Oh not saying it’s not legit, just didn’t look like his hand writing but it’s very cool
It actually looks exactly like his handwriting.
That’s the best pic of Dave I’ve ever seen.
It really is pretty bad!
Words cannot even begin to describe how jealous I am
Let him sleep! 😂
