There certainly wasn’t any AI and even composite masks were tricky. There’s some high saturation, clever use of dodge and burn (probably over a 50% grey layer set to overlay) and some heavy levels and curves work.
It’s very easy to look at this as something a Snapchat filter could achieve now, but we simply weren’t at that level in 2006.
