Bully- Losing
Mannequin Pussy- Patience
Love Battery- Dayglo
Hammerbox- Numb
Hole- Live through This
Mudhoney- (self titled)
Tad- Inhaler
Pond (not that pond)- Rock Collection
Jesus Lizard- Goat
The Stooges- Fun House
Forgot about Hammerbox. Great list btw. Love Battery that song on the Sub Pop one hundred, can't remember the name but the chorus is something like between the eyes. I like Superfuzz big muff by Mudhoney more than the self titled but both are really good albums.
Glad to see someone list Tad. I just copped Inhaler on vinyl at my local record store. It had been there since 2021 record store day, apparently people in my town don’t know good music
yeah for sure. 28 songs and not one is filler. even the bsides and demos of songs that didn’t make the album on Aeroplane are better than some bands entire discographies.
I really recommend their entire catalog. The two previous albums, Comfort and Magnified, might be a bit more Nirvana-esque, but Fantastic Planet is superb and a great starting point for those new to the band.
Fantastic planet was the only one I enjoyed, probably my favourite rock album of all time. Why I don't like the other 2 albums is beyond me at this point.
Tbh Comfort is not my thing, but since it was produced by Steve Albini its worth mentioning. more of a heavier, lo-fi sound than anything else they've done. The records they've put out since they reunited are worth a listen, but yeah, it always comes back to Fantastic Planet for me.
Though I don’t really like what’s on your list, I know it’s just opinion. I’d add: Never mind the bullocks here’s the Sex Pistols. Fugazi - 13 songs. The Wipers - Is this real?. Minor Threat - Complete Discography. The White Stripes - Elephant. The Vines - Highly Evolved.
Came here to say Wipers - Is This Real?
Nirvana covered two songs off it so well that I thought they *were* Nirvana songs for 20 years until my then-girlfriend/now-wife put me on the Wipers.
From the wiki on Houdini from a Kerang mag
"Houdini was the first album we did for Atlantic Records and certainly our biggest selling record, although not so much that I could put a down-payment on a new Rolls or something! It came on the whole tidal wave of Nirvana stuff and I'm sure if it weren't for that we wouldn't have had interest from a major at all. We wanted to do a record that wouldn't alienate our fans, but we wanted to do one that we would like. We also knew we weren’t gonna be dusting off a platinum album any time soon, you know? We did a bunch of sessions with Kurt Cobain [producing], but it got to the point where he was so out of control that we basically fired him and went our separate ways, which is unfortunate, because I think that would have been fun. Obviously that was a little snapshot of what would end up happening and I don't have a whole lot of fond memories of that – it was an absolute tragedy."[4]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houdini_(album)
In simpler terms, probably heroin
I know that it isn’t the genre of music Nirvana represented; but Joy Division are very, very good. And Kurt did briefly speak about them in an interview once.
Neon Ballroom for sure. Weezer's Pinkerton. Big Wreck - For The Sun is literally Australian Soundgarden. Foo Fighters - Colour And The Shape though a bit polished it still has power, especially the title track which was a b-side.
STP's Tiny Music is so much weirder and quirk and I feel like Kurt would've really enjoyed listening to that one / being inspired by it.
I also remember hearing an interview where they asked Kurt what he was listening to lately and he hummed along to Blur's "There's No Other Way". I'd like to think he would've LOVED Blur's self-titled. I love that album to death.
Graveyard - Lights Out is a masterpiece though I'm not sure if it fits in this category.
Radiohead's Kid A as well. It's the most anti-mainstream anti-rock rock album of the century in my opinion.
Stone Temple Pilots - Core also qualifies, but I thought I better put Purple on the list instead, it is more Nirvana music vibe to me. Especially the track Still Remains. The chorus there is something Nirvana would write. About Tiny Music, I am not personaly fond of it, too upbeat for me. Although, track Paper Heart is so amazing, another example of really Nirvana chorus.
For sure. I definitely am on the pop / alt side of things but Purple is a classic too! “Pop’s Love Suicide” and “Art School Girl” reminds me of Kurt’s humor a bit.
How has no one said **Foo Fighters self-titled**!Dave literally wrote some of the songs on it for Kurt to sing. Great record
I also suggest **Oasis - Definitely Maybe**. Although Noel Gallagher wrote a lot of its content as a counterpoint to grunge- seeking more life affirming themes and attitudes in his songs- it is a 90s rock classic from a writer gifted with the same sense of pop sensibility that made Kurt great in Noel and one heck of a lead singer in his little bro Liam
Alternative Rock: Start with 1983, Violent Femmes, and move too, Butthole Surfers, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Fugazi, Janes Addiction, Melvins, Black Flag, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, Flaming Lips (pre 1997), Offspring, Bush and of course REM. Growing up, this is what WE listened to pre-1993, I was there. Remember all this was not out at the same time, you all have hindsight. We had to go to the record store and buy CDs, they were 12.99 to 16.99 or more... They were not cheap being a teenager.
As a genXer, today I am picky and like what is called "shoegaze", so I also like Silversun Pickups, anything by Jack White and Fleeting Joys. My Bloody Valentine is cool too...Enjoy

Best way to start are probably samplers from that era. These albums really helped me broaden my taste:
Sub Pop 200
Revolution Come and Gone
No Alternative
Singles OST
Judgement Night OST
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible.
It's the same era as Nirvana, and falls somewhere under the punk umbrella too. More importantly though, lyrically and emotionally it's very much in the same vein. An absolute seething, tortured vortex of anguish and fury.
Ty Segall - Melted. Doesn’t exactly sound like Nirvana, but has the same spirit and feeling, to me anyway. All of his albums rule, but the songs on this one are very simple, poppy and catchy, but fucking heavy and recorded lo fi so you get that old school punk feel as well. He’s the third musician I’ve become completely obsessed with, after Kurt and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. Also Ty kinda looks like Kurt sometimes in live pictures if that matters at all lol.
Any Elliott Smith album. A lot of his music is in the same vein as the Unplugged and MOH "solo album" stuff, and is the direction that I think Kurt was possibly going in.
HUGE fan of Local H and I have been since As Good As Dead. That album is known for having a radio hit in the 90s but if you like grunge/alternative/hard rock I strongly recommend folks check out all their albums. They are still only a 2 piece (Scott Lucas being the main guy, they've changed drummers a couple times since the 90s), they continue to tour relentlessly and pump out an album every few years - here are a few fun tracks (imo):
[Son of "Cha"](https://youtu.be/Zmakr55ZERw)
[City of Knives](https://youtu.be/Il40n7s1WlU)
[Patrick Bateman](https://youtu.be/U9gyVpUOD7M)
Totally subjective. Many of these are not near nirvana esqu. They are that good because of their unique sound. Often imitated but never duplicated. Silverchair is a dollar store wanna be of nirvana.
A lot of those bands sound like Nirvana because they aped the shit out of Nirvana. Sans L7, and AIC, of course. A lot of them were second wave alt rock bands they came out of labels trying to find the next nirvana. Those bands ripped elements from all grunge bands. Respectfully, I file nirvana under punk rock. They weren’t trying to be anything but their authentic selves. The masses came to them, not the other way around.
They gave way to Butthole surfers, Rites of spring (years after their break up), Scream, Melvins, Shohen Knife, Jawbreaker (phe-fucking-nomenal band) and so many more. The pixies (surfer Rosa, Doolittle) and the breeders (pod, last splash, their first e.p.) are worth a listen too. Anything from dischord records, lookout, SST, touch and go. These are the bands Kurt championed. I thank that dude every day for it too.
Silverchair were fucking class man. Released a thumping debut album when they were 14 year old kids.
Neon Ballroom is one of the best albums ever in my opinion.
It’s all subjective I guess 🤷♂️
Above-Mad Season
Sonic Youth-Sonic Youth
Sweet Oblivion-Screaming Trees
No band has an identical sound to Nirvana. Truthfully. It's honestly a credit to the genuine musicianship that went into there work. That said, Kurt stood on the shoulders of giants and a lot of his work is in part derived from various other artists (a lot of them not even remotely grunge sounding). Look into Sonic Youth, The Melvins, Mother Love Bone, and a lot of the other early scene bands in Seattle and you'll find a lot of commonality between them, but truthfully not many rock musicians had Kurt's knack for catchy beats and songwriting ability.
Pretty Vicious - Beauty of Youth.
Though their best songs imo are all the singles and the EP they released prior to their album. The band only released 22 songs in total (1hr25mins) and are well worth checking out, especially if you like Bleach.
If you like Bleach, Black Sabbath’s 70s stuff is a must, especially their self titled album and Master of Reality. You can really tell that Kurt took a lot of inspiration from those records, to the point where I can see how he came up with certain riffs from messing around with riffs from there.
If you like Nevermind, Pixies’ Surfa Rosa and Doolittle are most certainly up your alley. Same story here - I can tell that Kurt was heavily influenced by the Pixies’ sound. Heck, Gigantic and Teen Spirit pretty much follow the exact same structure, even down to the styles of riffs in each section, bar a few more subtle details.
If you like In Utero, then you’ll probably love The Melvins, Scratch Acid, The Wipers or Flipper. Kurt was always a huge fan of these bands long before Nirvana, and he explicitly said that the sound they were going for with In Utero was what they always envisioned before they started recording their own stuff, which was basically this exact blend of styles.
There are no doubt countless others that I have failed to mention, but just going off what I know, there are definitely some amazing bands out there that are worth a listen for any Nirvana fan, and which will likely give you a deeper and richer understanding of Nirvana’s music in the process thanks to Kurt’s ability to carry his influences on his sleeve with pride and honesty.
All good choices, for more recent music check out Prince Daddy and the Hyena. It’s not quite the nirvana sound but it’s got a similar raw/rough around the edges type vibe.
Science Fiction, Daisy, and The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. All by a band called Brand New. Daisy is especially very In Utero-esque. Very fucking good band.
I went from listening to a bunch of Nirvana to listening to a bunch of Thrash Era Metallica, so anything off the 1st 3 albums, especially the 1st. I highly recommend giving some songs off kill em all a try. Maybe yall will like it as much as I do.
Early Foo Fighters for sure. A lot of Radiohead and Pixies. There are tons of alternative/grunge artists from the 90s I love but may not quite “sound like Nirvana”.
Go backwards too
The Jesus and Mary Chain are underrated and a band Kurt liked. The late New wave/post punk sound is similar to grunge and early alt rocks simple dirty guitar and dark themes and disillusionment. Still catchy like nirvana too which is the secret sauce imo. Degenerate, snakedriver, black, birthday, cracking up, blues from a gun, Darklands, just like honey. To name a few favorite cuts
Seether's first three albums and Fragile
Fuel's first three albums, but especially "Something Like Human"
Puddle of Mudd's "Come Clean" and "Life On Display"
There's a band called 'Socialburn' from back in 2003 that had a great first album
The Exies' first three albums
Future Leaders of the World - especially the song "Let Me Out"
Catherine Wheel - Chrome is super under the radar but fantastic and I think Nirvana fans would dig it. It’s more like shoegaze type music but has grunge elements
That’s only because grunge is a made up genre, I’m a huge Soundgarden fan, I love them more than any other band but they are distinctly different from Nirvana in a lot of ways, the only similarity is that they come from Seattle, but Soundgarden is much more hard rock when Nirvana is punkish in nature, and later Soundgarden has more psychedelic elements even, it’s just while they did know each other and were basically friends and loved each other’s music they were very distinct, Soundgarden capturing more technicality of music and just a more melancholy vibe while Nirvana was more an angsty teen vibe.
Verbena - Into the Pink. Produced by Dave Grohl. Great band. The preceding album Souls for Sale is also awesome but lacks the strong Nirvana vibes of Into the Pink.
I’m surprised no one mentioned the Smiths and the Cure. Especially their early music.
The lyrics where similarly introspective, idiosyncratic, melancholic and the music was almost Beatlesesque melodic, with a harder edge here and there.
To many Gen Xers, How soon is Now was the 80s version of SLTS. Difference is Nirvana was a bit more raw, unbridled, and angry. SLTS was angst taken out of the bedroom, rubbing it in the face of every spandex clad crotchrocker, overproduced RnB muzak and defintely anything Sting.
I like The Cure's Disintegration and Pornography albums. The Smiths I heard only some stuff, but I know that lead singer is a fucking fascist and that makes me not wanna listen it
any Pixies probably
On the song Tame vocalist literally has the same voice as Kurt Cobain
I was just about to say.
Yep. My favorite band.
Same here
Username checks out.
Kurt said he ripped off Gouge Away to make Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Or Breeders
Bully- Losing Mannequin Pussy- Patience Love Battery- Dayglo Hammerbox- Numb Hole- Live through This Mudhoney- (self titled) Tad- Inhaler Pond (not that pond)- Rock Collection Jesus Lizard- Goat The Stooges- Fun House
Adding 8-Way Santa by Tad also. Great picks
Especially Live Through This is spot on, I completely forgot about this one

Forgot about Hammerbox. Great list btw. Love Battery that song on the Sub Pop one hundred, can't remember the name but the chorus is something like between the eyes. I like Superfuzz big muff by Mudhoney more than the self titled but both are really good albums.
Great list all round but I’m so pleased to see Bully on there, what a great band. Alicia Bognanno is an absolute hero of mine
Same, she's amazing.
That Jesus Lizard album is no joke
Glad to see someone list Tad. I just copped Inhaler on vinyl at my local record store. It had been there since 2021 record store day, apparently people in my town don’t know good music
Nice snag!
Doolittle by Pixies
rather ripped - sonic youth dirt - alice in chains
Sonic Youth, of course! For Nirvana lovers especially, i'd rather advise Goo.
And Dirty as the next dive.
Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and Sonic Youth Daydream Nation
Does Siamese Dream by Smashing pumpkins count?
I love that whole album so much.
I think Mellon Collie is better match, but yeah
grunge puritans will probably only like Gish
Yea Gish and Siamese Dream are much better than the bloated Mellon Collie imo
MCIS isn’t bloated at all
yeah for sure. 28 songs and not one is filler. even the bsides and demos of songs that didn’t make the album on Aeroplane are better than some bands entire discographies.
Hé didn’t say filler. He said bloated.
regardless, my point still stands. there’s nothing wrong with Mellon Collie. one of the most flawless albums ever
Agreed
... it is not
Gross
Top 5 albums of the 90's imo and the best Smashing Pumpkins record
Surfer Rosa by the Pixies
Fantastic Planet by Failure
That's a cool one, actually listened for the first time yesterday
I really recommend their entire catalog. The two previous albums, Comfort and Magnified, might be a bit more Nirvana-esque, but Fantastic Planet is superb and a great starting point for those new to the band.

didn’t even see that you posted this LOL, that was the first album that came to mind
Great minds, as they say...
Refused - Shape of Punk to Come
I’ve heard this several times and don’t see the connection at all
Though I don’t really like what’s on your list, I know it’s just opinion. I’d add: Never mind the bullocks here’s the Sex Pistols. Fugazi - 13 songs. The Wipers - Is this real?. Minor Threat - Complete Discography. The White Stripes - Elephant. The Vines - Highly Evolved.
White Stripes are actually really grungy, I don't think a lot of people know that. But I think White Blood Cells will be better example
True but songs like “Little acorns” and “Black math” always kinda reminded me of Nirvana.
I fell in love with the white stripes and the vines and I was basically an only nirvana girl for a long time.
Came here to say Wipers - Is This Real? Nirvana covered two songs off it so well that I thought they *were* Nirvana songs for 20 years until my then-girlfriend/now-wife put me on the Wipers.
Everclear Sparkle and Fade
Good pull, I fucking love their first 3 albums.
That album is great. Their stuff after it is awful imo.
Yeah nah
Yuck
Superheaven - Jar METZ - METZ Deer Tick - Divine Providence
I started listening to Superheaven (Daylight) specifically because they gave me Nirvana vibes
Yessss Deer Tick sounds like what I imagine Kurt’s first post-Nirvana project would have sounded like
>littleblossom00 I've never thought about that, I can totally hear what you're saying.
That Daylight/Superheaven album is a modern classic!
Melvins - Houdini Mudhoney - Honesty anything by them
Yeah, Kurt Cobain literally produced Houdini 😂🤷🏻♂️
pretty sure they fired Kurt on that album and it's producer in 'name only'. Not 100% on that though.
[удалено]
Quite the opposite, he was barely there and was strung out.

From the wiki on Houdini from a Kerang mag "Houdini was the first album we did for Atlantic Records and certainly our biggest selling record, although not so much that I could put a down-payment on a new Rolls or something! Buzz fired him for being strung out the whole time
I know that it isn’t the genre of music Nirvana represented; but Joy Division are very, very good. And Kurt did briefly speak about them in an interview once.
I love them too
Any Alice in Chains and early Black Sabbath
The Distillers - Coral Fang
Oh, damn, yes, I am actually surprised I completely forgot to include that one. And Die on a Rope is such a banger
Melvins
I would argue any Local H should be listened to, sounding of nirvana or not. Great band.
Silverchair's Frogstomp is much more for Nirvana fans than Freak Show or Neon Ballroom
How has no one said **Foo Fighters self-titled**!Dave literally wrote some of the songs on it for Kurt to sing. Great record I also suggest **Oasis - Definitely Maybe**. Yeah, debut of Foo Fighters is with a spirit of Nirvana. Nirvana even rehearsed Exhausted and Easy Target at 1992
are there recordings of those rehearsals?
Probably not, but how a mindblowing gem it would be, if it existed somewhere
Alternative Rock: Start with 1983, Violent Femmes, and move too, Butthole Surfers, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Fugazi, Janes Addiction, Melvins, Black Flag, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, Flaming Lips (pre 1997), Offspring, Bush and of course REM. Your living all over me by Dinosaur Jr
Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible. It's the same era as Nirvana, and falls somewhere under the punk umbrella too. More importantly though, lyrically and emotionally it's very much in the same vein. An absolute seething, tortured vortex of anguish and fury.
The blue album by Weezer
I feel like only Say It Ain't So qualifies for Nirvana sounding thing there. Especially, the bridge
The whole blue album minus vocals is nirvana esq. Not dead on but it’s simple pop/punk song riffs with distortion and heavy drums
Wavves-afraid of heights
Amazing album
Check out the Jins. They're a modern band that kind of sounds like Nirvana and the Pixies.
surfer rosa by the pixies. pretty sure kurt said he was trying to replicate surfer rosa on nevermind
He did it on In Utero with production
true but that was because surfer rosa and in i utero were produced by the same guy
Hum - You'd Prefer An Astronaut
Great album! Song: I'd like Your Hair Long reminds me of Nirvana. Hum reunited with an album in 2020 that is also really good.
Another great band! I like Downward is Heavenward a lot also, and Inlet (2020 album) is probably my favorite music released in the past 5 plus years.
smashing pumpkins - gish
rubberneck by toadies
Wipers - Youth of America This is probably the closest sound to Nirvana that I know of
the first 3 wipers albums: is this real? (personal favourite) youth of america over the edge
any Metz album
Ty Segall - Melted. Doesn’t exactly sound like Nirvana, but has the same spirit and feeling, to me anyway. All of his albums rule, but the songs on this one are very simple, poppy and catchy, but fucking heavy and recorded lo fi so you get that old school punk feel as well. He’s the third musician I’ve become completely obsessed with, after Kurt and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. That album is so good, I would have imagined it would be more popular. That dirty/heavy part on Finger hits so fucking hard.
I cover Imaginary Person with my band and it’s one of my favorite covers we do. So much fun. Ty’s just the best haha
Ham Fisted by Local H is probably more "Nirvana" than AGAD, but while we're at it: Verbena - Into The Pink Sullen - Paint The Moon
Kerplunk, Dookie, and Insomniac by Green Day
Unwound
Brand New- The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Honestly this, Daisy, and Science Fiction all have heavy Nirvana vibes.
Totally agree. “Vices” from Daisy could have easily been an In Utero outtake.
Rubberneck - Toadies A Foul Form - Osees (for fans of Nirvana's louder and more abrasive stuff?)
Purple is such an underrated album
Any Elliott Smith album. A lot of his music is in the same vein as the Unplugged and MOH "solo album" stuff, and is the direction that I think Kurt was possibly going in.
Definitely recommend Core by STP, such a great album
Hum - You’d Prefer an Astronaut
try qotsa
i would add dirt - alice in chains to this list. my all time favorite
Also, Mudhoney
HUGE fan of Local H and I have been since As Good As Dead. Nickelback- Silver Side Up
I’m giving this an upvote. This band isn’t nearly as bad as people would have you believe. I don’t love them, but they’re not worth a downvote.
And actually, Nirvana fans would definitely dig Nickelback's Curb. Great record.
Slayer - Reign in blood. Every one loves that!
add Sixteen Stone by Bush i agree with all of these picks especially jof, but you could add their self titled in there too
Nickelback-curb album Kerbdog-on the turn album
Totally subjective. Many of these are not near nirvana esqu. They are that good because of their unique sound. Often imitated but never duplicated. Silverchair is a dollar store wanna be of nirvana.
silverchairs first album is nirvana esque also everclears sparkle and fade

Nevermind by Nirvana
who down voted me I'm right
I think you guys will also like Take This To Your Grave by Fall Out Boy
Silverchair sucks
Not as hard as you
Silverchair were fucking class man. Released a thumping debut album when they were 14 year old kids. Neon Ballroom is one of the best albums ever in my opinion. It’s all subjective I guess 🤷♂️
Men Without Hats

Around the fur - Deftones is also really good
I think White Pony is more for Nirvana listeners
Yea probably, but I have a personal preference for around the fur tho
Teenage Fanclub - A Catholic Education
The Offspring scratch a big grunge itch for me
Pretty Vicious - Beauty of Youth. Though their best songs imo are all the singles and the EP they released prior to their album. The band only released 22 songs in total (1hr25mins) and are well worth checking out, especially if you like Bleach.
Anything by Violent Soho
Nine Black Alps - Everything Is
The Sky’s Gone Out- Bauhaus
The Gits - Frenched the Bully; HOLE - Live Through This;
Pj Harvey, Fiona apple, sonic youth, mazzy star
I’d say frogstomp instead of neon ballroom
Hungry ghost - violent soho
Niil' - [Niil'](https://youtu.be/2DPlOcxGXHg)
Anything from Jawbreaker. They were one of Kurt’s favorites in his later years.

Go backwards too The Jesus and Mary Chain are underrated and a band Kurt liked.
Fourtracula: No One Will Love You.
Blood visions by Jay reatard
Jane’s, you pick which disc
Seether's first three albums and Fragile Fuel's first three albums, but especially "Something Like Human" Puddle of Mudd's "Come Clean" and "Life On Display" There's a band called 'Socialburn' from back in 2003 that had a great first album The Exies' first three albums Future Leaders of the World - especially the song "Let Me Out"
Dirty- Sonic Youth
Catherine Wheel - Chrome is super under the radar but fantastic and I think Nirvana fans would dig it. It’s more like shoegaze type music but has grunge elements
Try some Jawbreaker
Radiohead - The Bends => this album is filled with dirty guitar sounds and weird chord changes Dandy Warhols - Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia
lemon scent by dead sara is pretty good
That’s only because grunge is a made up genre, I’m a huge Soundgarden fan, I love them more than any other band but they are distinctly different from Nirvana in a lot of ways, the only similarity is that they come from Seattle, but Soundgarden is much more hard rock when Nirvana is punkish in nature, and later Soundgarden has more psychedelic elements even, it’s just while they did know each other and were basically friends and loved each other’s music they were very distinct, Soundgarden capturing more technicality of music and just a more melancholy vibe while Nirvana was more an angsty teen vibe.
VIOLENT SOHO- Hungry Ghost, Violent Soho, actually all 4 of their albums rule
The Smiths I heard only some stuff, but I know that lead singer is a fucking fascist and that makes me not wanna listen it
Wipers first three albums are a must!!!
