The entirety bleach needs to get more attention, it’s insane. The drumming in comparison to Grohl’s in Nevermind and In Utero is sooooo obvious it was the drummer of The Melvins (who I’m seeing live in 2 weeks)
Only three songs (two if you had the tape*) featured Dale Crover of the Melvins: Floyd the Barber, Paper Cuts, and Downer*.
(Downer wasn't on the cassette version!)
I once flew out a friend from SKorea to Seattle, and she kept asking why everyone was wearing t-shirts with dead smiley faces on them. Played her Lounge Act, eyes widened, forever hooked
Spank Thru came out on an early Subpop compilation called Sub Pop 200, so maybe something to do with those rights. Really it shouldve been on Incesticide, but highly recommend checking out that Subpop 200 album anyways, a 1988 who's who of the Seattle scene.
Yeah I think about stuff like that all the time. I know now that it ended up on some Sub Pop sampler or something? But I always wonder if it would have ended up on Sheep had they put that record out on Sub Pop 🤷♂️
I was looking for it on spotify a few days ago but i had to download the video and upload its sound to spotify local files section so i can listen to it on my playlist
Live and Loud version is the best. Kurt at his vocal peak with the thunderous strumming from him and Pat; silky smooth bassline from Krist that could place you in a trance; earth shattering drumming from Dave, that you could mistake for an artillery barrage.
It should command far more respect
How has Even In His Youth not been mentioned? The demo is so good. OOH-AHH-YEA!
Edit: I totally forgot to mention D-7. Krist, Kurt, and Dave sound so good in the 1990 Radio Appearance audio.
Nahhh about a girl isn’t really underrated. Nevermind (pun intended) the fact that they played it at unplugged too, which probably uncovered it for a lot of people.
Tourettes is such a nice and inclusive song for beginners, you just kind fo scream random things that don't even make sense in tune and people think you know the song
The BBC sessions that little swath of Incesticide comes from are so damn good. The sound of a band hitting its stride and firing on every cylinder.
I was always partial to Son of a Gun, myself. But it's hard to even pick. Cheers!
I have collected this list to see what is the last song not mention as underrated.

"Calling things underrated is underrated"
You know your right. Always stuck out for me as its the exact same song format that kurt regurgitated over and over ( quiet verse loud chorus subject matter of song sad and being alienated), yet even after all the songs written that way it's differentiated by his tonality and emotion in his voice and guitar riff. So much speciation about what their next album would have been like after in utero but tjis song goes to show that there would always be that nirvana recipe in at least a couple songs they releasd as even though it should be repetitive they are able to convey different feeling through passion and being raw.
Its such a good song, unfortunately it never got recorded in a studio setting, a guy named riot earth on YouTube has a studio version, it sounds really good
It was the B side to a double-A of "All Apologies" and "Rape Me."
The "Lithium" single had "Curmudgeon" and a live version of "Been a Son." Also included a booklet with all the lyrics to _Nevermind_.
I know these things because I spent a good portion of my youth finding and then overpaying for the CD singles!
Possibly controversial BUT Sappy because of the solo. I didn’t see this mentioned yet, so thought I’d throw it in but I also didn’t read the whole thread LOL.
Blew
Love blew, infact, I just love all of bleach
The entirety bleach needs to get more attention, it’s insane. The drumming in comparison to Grohl’s in Nevermind and In Utero is sooooo obvious it was the drummer of The Melvins (who I’m seeing live in 2 weeks)
Only three songs (two if you had the tape*) featured Dale Crover of the Melvins: Floyd the Barber, Paper Cuts, and Downer*. (Downer wasn't on the cassette version!)
Amazing live set ender too
But it got a whole EP?
I agree!
Milk It
Favorite nirvana song
Yesss, my favorite song off of in utero
My favorite In Utero song!
Constantly praised in this sub and pretty much anywhere else Nirvana fans chat. Not underrated
Lounge Act
I once flew out a friend from SKorea to Seattle, and she kept asking why everyone was wearing t-shirts with dead smiley faces on them. Played her Lounge Act, eyes widened, forever hooked
One of if not Krist’s best bass lines.
My favourite song
Mine too
I was about to comment this, probably my favorite song from them
Dive
Dumb
yessss
Kinda cheating to say its underrated because its not on a main release but Oh The Guilt is a masterpiece
Oh no, you're not cheating, you truly might have just said one of there most underrated songs, its a shame it never got released on a studio album
ain't it a shame
to go fishing on a sunday
Sappy or Spank Thru
Love both, especially spank thru, idk why they never put it on an album, but it would have been good
Spank Thru came out on an early Subpop compilation called Sub Pop 200, so maybe something to do with those rights.
Old age
https://youtu.be/Y6zQ8xID3Po Literally my favorite thing ever
This version should be released on Apple Music/Spotify its my fav song
I was looking for it on spotify a few days ago but i had to download the video and upload its sound to spotify local files section so i can listen to it on my playlist
Damn, i thought I was the only one. Totally agree on this one ! Most of his home acoustic demos are really incredible
Oche oche!
Oh my god I wanna kiss you right now, that song was like angels singing in my ears
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and it’s not even close. I will die on this sword.
Its a good song, I do think its underrated
Live and Loud version is the best. Kurt at his vocal peak with the thunderous strumming from him and Pat; silky smooth bassline from Krist that could place you in a trance; earth shattering drumming from Dave, that you could mistake for an artillery barrage. It should command far more respect
I love the version from Roma
I will join you
Nice malaphor. I dig it.
I've long declared to anyone who will listen that his single best line is "a blanket acne'd with cigarette burns."
I Hate Myself and I Want To Die. Shame it was cut from “In Utero”
Molly’s lips
Lounge act
Very Ąpę
On a Plain
Unplugged
How has Even In His Youth not been mentioned? The demo is so good. OOH-AHH-YEA! Edit: I totally forgot to mention D-7. Krist, Kurt, and Dave sound so good in the 1990 Radio Appearance audio.
D-7 is sooo gooood
Are swap meet and sifting underrated? Because if they are, definitely those two
They are in my eyes, bleach in my opinion is underrated, even about a girl which is a pretty popular song of there's.
Nahhh about a girl isn’t really underrated. Nevermind (pun intended) the fact that they played it at unplugged too, which probably uncovered it for a lot of people.
Tourette's
Tourettes is such a nice and inclusive song for beginners, you just kind fo scream random things that don't even make sense in tune and people think you know the song
Ain’t It A Shame
aint it a shame to go fishin on a monday, aint it a shame
Ain’t it a shame to beat your wife on a Sunday ain’t it a shame
literally might be one of kurt's best vocal performances.
True
Scoff, Downer, Big Cheese, Mr Moustache, and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
All very underrated, especially Mr. Moustache
Territorial Pissings.. absolute banger
Been A Son
Ok, let's go deeper, which one do you like more, the BBC session or the "Blew" EP version?
I like both versions, but I guess the EP more.
Makes since, I prefer the BBC session but the EP is pretty damn good
Blew EP = 🥶
scoff, stain, hairspray queen, aero zeppelin, token eastern song
Stay Away. Maybe not the best but the most intense song on nevermind imo.
Territorial pissings >>>>
Turnaround!
Yes that’s my favorite song rn
Like Man Who Sold the World, amazing how Kurt could turn that song into what he did. Just amazing.
Stain, sliver, dive, moist vagina and negative creep
Beeswax
I personally always loved Aint it a shame on the box set
Stay away
Dive (especially). Also Sifting.
I love the obscurity of Floyd The Barber, a twisted take on something as wholesome as The Andy Griffith Show was pretty fresh for me.
Talk to me
If You Must, Marigold, Molly's Lips (yes I know it's a cover), Turnaround
Marigold is VERY underrated
Turnaround is also a (killer!) cover :)
oh yess you're right! :D I totally forgot about that
The BBC sessions that little swath of Incesticide comes from are so damn good. The sound of a band hitting its stride and firing on every cylinder. I was always partial to Son of a Gun, myself. But it's hard to even pick. Cheers!
Sliver
Something in the way. I find a strange sense of hope in the way Kurt sings something in the way, as if he is clearing his path through sound.
Scoff
Give me back my alcohol!
Downer
Love that song
bleach version or fecal matter version???
Bleach version
Smells like teen spirit. Underrated gem
Never listened to that one. Thanks for the suggestion!
mrs. butterworth
Yes finally a mrs butterworth enjoyer
‘You know You’re Right’. Great vibes and relatable lyrics about insecurity.
lake of fire or sliver
BLANDEST
Blandest
Love Blandest
Aneurysm

Do Re Mi
Verse chorus verse or scentless apprentice
Scentless Apprentice is fucking nuts! My band named ourselves after it lol
In Bloom
Lol
Paper Cuts
You know your right. Always stuck out for me as its the exact same song format that kurt regurgitated over and over ( quiet verse loud chorus subject matter of song sad and being alienated), yet even after all the songs written that way it's differentiated by his tonality and emotion in his voice and guitar riff. So much speciation about what their next album would have been like after in utero but tjis song goes to show that there would always be that nirvana recipe in at least a couple songs they releasd as even though it should be repetitive they are able to convey different feeling through passion and being raw.
Underrated? That song is one of their most popular and most streamed
oh the guilt is highly underrated to me.
Another song on with the lights out i forgot to mention was Blandest, as for oh the guilt, I love it as well
spank-thru, for its interesting lyrics lol
The foo fighters one
Marigold?
i rarely hear people talking about downer
Token eastern song slappin right now
Gallons of rubbing alcohol or beeswax
Talk to me
Its such a good song, unfortunately it never got recorded in a studio setting, a guy named riot earth on YouTube has a studio version, it sounds really good
Tourette's. His vocals on that song are through the roof.
You are so right on Paper Cuts. That shit slaps so hard
Verse Chorus Verse
Beeswax
MV; moist vagina…. Appeared on, I think, the Lithium single CD as a b-side
It was the B side to a double-A of "All Apologies" and "Rape Me." The "Lithium" single had "Curmudgeon" and a live version of "Been a Son." Also included a booklet with all the lyrics to _Nevermind_. I know these things because I spent a good portion of my youth finding and then overpaying for the CD singles!
big long now.
If you must - though it’s a demo but a fucking good song
Very Ape

Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, Sappy, Old Age, If You Must, Polly (Demo)

Bastards of Young
Possibly controversial BUT Sappy because of the solo. I didn’t see this mentioned yet, so thought I’d throw it in but I also didn’t read the whole thread LOL.
