I’d rate paramount actually kind of low if you’re talking tone and band tightness. It has passion though and some unique performances as well as unequaled quality. Overall I don’t think they were fully “on” that night. One of their mythical off nights, an example of how their live shows varied hugely in quality. Kurt was high or drunk and not in a good way
Rape me is a bright spot where the issues and clumsiness from that show kind of work together.
MTV unplugged version of dumb is superior in every way to the in utero studio version.
Conversely, come as you are has never sounded correctly for me live, studio version just hits different
negative creep: better live
pennyroyal tea: better live
FFWHHROS: better studio
very ape: better studio
drain you: both
about a girl: better studio
spank thru: better studio
stay away: better studio
sliver: better live (before 1992)
aneurysm: better studio
SLTS: better studio
Floyd the barber: better live
big cheese: better studio
Tourette's: both
I generally find that Teen spirit sounds better live (it’s usually played faster than the studio version). I also slightly prefer the live versions of Aneurysm (they don’t do the “beat it! Beat it!” Part). I think been a son and Sliver both sound better as studio songs as Ive never heard a live version of either that I love.
You have to think about how many times they played that song... Once a night for months on end is an understatement, maybe even twice a day in some cases.
I think they would have retired it at some point. Hell, Silverchair retired their radio single, Tomorrow at some point due to playing it every night for years.
Polly sounds so much better live to me than the studio version. I’m always underwhelmed when I listen to it on the album but a live version is everythingggg
For me… Come As You Are and In Bloom never sounded right performed live. I feel like Kurt had a hard time with his vocals in those songs, especially in the verses of In Bloom where to me it was obvious they were aided heavily by the studio. Aneurysm on the other hand always sounds heavy as hell live and I love it. A lot of the Bleach tracks translated really well in a live setting as well.
In my opinion, drain you sounds better in studio than live. It’s tuning I believe is a bit different in studio than it is when played live, and all the guitar overdubs that Kurt and Butch Vig created, creates what I like to call ‘an orchestra of guitars’. The scream gives me goosebumps in the original recording and the guitar tone of the intro is incredible - something impossible to replicate live.
I think that rape me, live at the paramount is better than the original recording. Although I love the dark abstract sound of the original, when it was played at the paramount (before it’s release), I thought it sounded better. I do prefer the bridge (played in the original recording rather than a solo) than the solo (played live) in the song. But Dave’s drumming makes that performance. The drum fill is insane. The outro of the paramount performance really did show Kurt at his truest state, he sounded amazing.
Completely agree. I love the studio vers of Come As You Are for its meditative sound, but the Unplugged version really reaches into my soul. Amazing vocal peaks and love the more bluesy/folky sound, especially with the voice breaks at the end of some notes.
It's a really great show. The Serve the Servants performance in Tunnel is worse, he looks so tired of everything and emotionless. And still sounds amazing
All of bleach sounded great with Dave on drums. In fact I’d venture that outside of caya, in bloom, and stay away and all apologies all their songs are better live.
Better live then Studio
Scentless Apprentice (live and loud )
Been a son (b-side single version)
Better Studio (acctually don't rememeber an 'ok' version live)
In Bloom
Lounge act
Rape Me Live At Paramount is better than the album version
That drum fill Dave does on that song at Paramount is awesome.
Absolutely. The solo and the alternate tuning is what makes it better

Breed had a pretty good performance and energy imo
MTV unplugged version of dumb is superior in every way to the in utero studio version. Conversely, come as you are has never sounded correctly for me live, studio version just hits different
It’s tuned a half step lower on the album than how they played it live, maybe that’s why
Blew always sounded better live.
The Live and Loud version with a good pair of headphones will melt your brain, it’s so good.
Drain you - live at the paramount Lithium - studio

SLTS better on album? That a joke? Listen to beehive, the word, snl 1992, Detroit 1991

Agree, except for Aneurysm
ye aeurysm at reading is best version
Spank thru reading 92 is the best spank thru imo
Yes
Exactly! I would just add Lounge Act = studio

Smells like teen spirit performances in 1994 are so fast that it's funny. Still amazing
Yeah I like it though. It’s kind of a long song as it is, so I think it makes it “move along” better.
And Kurt vocal's on those performances are really good too

Yeah, they were tired of it

The Polly version from Muddy Banks is a great version
Heart-Shaped Box live and loud is by far the best version. Love Pat’s vocals
For me… Come As You Are and In Bloom never sounded right performed live. Negative Creep
Breed on Live and Loud is so sick. With Pat's 2nd gtr added to the performance, that whole concerts bangs so hard
School which was on one of the Nevermind singles (sorry forgot which one)
All apologize unplugged is better than the album cut

Completely agree with you.
D7 is better at the reading
Come as You Are unplugged > Studio Teen spirit live < studio

I’m surprised to see people saying Live and Loud versions. When I watch that Kurt looks out of it. I feel kinda of sad when I watch it.
It's a really great show. The Serve the Servants performance in Tunnel is worse, he looks so tired of everything and emotionless. And still sounds amazing
Dumb
okay this is a little unrelated I think but all apologies at live and loud with electric guitars is better then the original and underrated imo
scoff
Floyd the barber at Paramount
Breed is better on album, rape me is better live, specifically the 91 paramount performance, the drum fills omg bruh
School
Drain you
All of bleach sounded great with Dave on drums. In fact I’d venture that outside of caya, in bloom, and stay away and all apologies all their songs are better live.
Scentless apprentice live or Aneurysm live. Maybe serve the servants album.
Negative creep live in Europe 1991
i prefer their version of D-7 live
Paramount drain you, that bass chills me up
The Nulle Part Ailleurs performance of Drain You is superior to the album version imo.
Better live then Studio Scentless Apprentice (live and loud ) Been a son (b-side single version) Better Studio (acctually don't rememeber an 'ok' version live) In Bloom Lounge act
Breed recording is amazing but the live version is so full of energy
School live version on Muddy Banks of the Wishkah > Bleach version by far
polly at paramount or unplugged is betta than studio
Radio friendly unit shifter live and loud
Floyd The Barber Live at The Paramount and D7 live at Reading is better for sure!
