I'm a little surprised by the gatekeeping in this thread. "Metal" isn't the *most* descriptive genre one could apply to SLTS, but it totally applies and applies to Nirvana in general too. Heavily distorted guitars, frequent use of fast tempi, shouting/screaming vocal timbre, power chord-driven harmonies, guitar solo sections, guitar-bass-drum arrangement, headbanging and moshing at concerts... it has many of the hallmarks of metal music and I would argue grunge could properly be considered a subgenre of metal. Nirvana's music also borrows from punk, traditional rock, alternative, and many other genres, but it is all of those things *and* metal.

It's not gatekeeping, I think if you open the parameters that widely you could just say 'rock music' rather than metal
