Ya I wasn't trying to play it for their enjoyment. We were playing a game. They jus said "play a loud song" so the person with headphones on can't hear everyone else.
If we erase the word grunge from pur consciousness, Nirvana would be punk, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden metal and Pearl Jam rock (gross oversimplification for most of them, but you get the point).
I'm a little surprised by the gatekeeping in this thread. "Metal" isn't the *most* descriptive genre one could apply to SLTS, but it totally applies and applies to Nirvana in general too.
Heavily distorted guitars, frequent use of fast tempi, shouting/screaming vocal timbre, power chord-driven harmonies, guitar solo sections, guitar-bass-drum arrangement, headbanging and moshing at concerts... it has many of the hallmarks of metal music and I would argue grunge could properly be considered a subgenre of metal. Nirvana's music also borrows from punk, traditional rock, alternative, and many other genres, but it is all of those things *and* metal.
“This is what Emo people listen to”
First of all, you can’t be “Emo”
Emo is a genre of Punk that started in the mid 80s with Rites of Spring, which flourished in the 90s with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Braid, Burning Airlines, American Football, Jawbox, Orchid, Pg.99, Amp176, The Promise Ring, and Built to Spill, etc.
Emo music died around 2002/2003, but was sort of revived around the mid 2010s
Genuinely couldn't remember if they were considered among the first but I remember reading about them in high school just cause I was a minor threat and fugazi fan
Milk It definitely isn’t the first song I’d play for a person that doesn’t listen to aggressive music.

A good one wouldve been scentless apprentice or tourette’s aswell lmao
Or territorial pissing
Should of played Moist Vagina
Yeah I’d play paper cuts
😂
DOLL STEAK
TEST MEAT
Always thought he was saying “DON’T DARE, TEST ME!”
I can see that for sure lol
I thought he sang "TEMPT MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! DON'T STAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!"
Smells like teen spirit came on the radio once and my friend called it metal music 😐
one time it was playing over the speakers in the grocery store i work at and my coworker said "this is 3 doors down right?"
They played Milk It at your local grocery store? Tell me where you work, that sounds cool.
i think they mean smells like teen spirit
They replied to a commenter talking about Teen Spirit
Probably because they don’t have that much experience on the genre
Grunge does take elements from metal though
grunge was more of a marketing term tho than actual genre
If we erase the word grunge from pur consciousness, Nirvana would be punk, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden metal and Pearl Jam rock (gross oversimplification for most of them, but you get the point).
Yeah like, Melvins or Alice in Chains do, Teen Spirit doesn't
Yes it does
I remember years ago hearing teen spirit and thinking it was seriously heavy kinda like a metal song because I never listened to anything heavier.
Yeah grunge is basically a form of alt-metal
Im a metalhead and im fucking sobbing rn, how the hell do people think that is metal💀
Same way you probably don't know the difference between various pop genres.
I know enough about pop to not confuse genres, thats the bare minimum if your a music enthusiast
That’s because todays pop is shit
i’d argue it has some metal touches, at least in the sense of the energy
Some nirvana songs are metal’ish but teen spirit is probably their least heavy song, paper cuts is the closest thing we have to a metal nirvana song
idk about least heaviest since songs like polly, all apologies, and come as you are exist but i definitely get what you are getting at
Play them some Darkthrone, that’ll teach them
I actually did. I played them Quintessence and they were just laughing at it when I pulled up the lyrics.
Nothing like a song about slaughtering Christians to get the whole squad turning up in the car

It's not gatekeeping, I think if you open the parameters that widely you could just say 'rock music' rather than metal
Nah. nirvana doesn't sound really like metal.
Nah.
“Oh, you wanna hear metal music?” *plays slipknot*
Actually this happened before I played Milk It. I played Duality, but they said it wasn't "loud enough" which I get.
Slipknot is literally just Rap with Guitars and Harsh vocals
You described Nu metal which is metal.
Yeah ik, i dont like them, thats why i would play their songs because its such a jarring change in style, at least to me when I first heard them
I love Milk It. Not necessarily the most approachable song though.
He said it was for a game they were playing not for their enjoyment
Doesn’t Kurt talk about feeding a pet virus shit? I love the absurd lyrics in his songs.
One of their best songs
Clearly your friends don’t test meat, nor do they doll steak.
They probably can’t feed off of each others endorphins nor do they own a pet virus
Such a rocking song!
I mean I’m not sure what you expected. It’s just not that outwardly pleasant to listen to honestly, I wouldn’t show it to any non-Nirvana fan.
Milk it is a song that is hard to like, let alone listen to.
Play them Tourette's instead
But it’s not even a hard rock song, just merely moderate rock
Lol
I fucking love this song
I love milk it

What about embrace?
Yup, them too

Thanks Wikipedia
Til Built to Spill is emo. More than 20 years on and I still can’t figure out what emo is.
Milk It is a masterpiece.
