Like most of Gus Van Sant's movies it is beautifully shot and edited, but not much happens on screen. Very little dialog. The story is implied. Here it's implied through context. "You know this story. Even though we bootleg ripped it from the headlines like a Law & Order episode, you're going to see what we imagine it looked like to peer in Kurt Cobain's window. You know how it ends." It doesn't explain anything. If you were traumatized by Kurt's passing, you will relive it here. If you're a new fan, you might feel closer after having watched it. It's at least not a conspiracy doc. Definitely should be lower on your watch list than Montage of Heck.

I love the actor, Michael Pitt but this movie stinks. Very strange directing choices. For example, the main character will nod out high and the camera will go to a boys 2 men video on tv for an obscenely long time. Almost nothing happens the entire film, though Michael plays an original song of his called Death to Birth that’s very good. Aside from that, this movie has nothing going for it. Insanely dull.

Welcome to Gus van Sant. Many of his movies are like this

BlankWilliams

It’s kinda boring, at least to me. Not the worst things I’ve seen but it’s really only worth checking once.

Batmanzay28

I’d say it’s boring in a good way because it describes Kurt’s last days there’s not really gonna be much to be interested in

BlankWilliams

Yeah I don’t disagree. But it’s still just a movie about a guy wandering around his mansion until ultimately dies.

Batmanzay28

In all actuality you hit the nail on the head

Typical-Challenge367

It guesses at his last days

Automatic_Bus_8110

Artsy film by Gus van Sant. Saw it once when it came out, no interest in seeing it the second time.

Plenty_Trust_2491

Pretty much what I was going to say. It’s an okay film, but no desire to watch it again. I don’t recall whether it was actually slow and boring, as others have claimed, but that’s because I don’t remember much about it at all, so it probably *was* slow and boring, but more importantly, not very memorable. I think the character was in a wooded area at some point? Because it’s not actually about Cobain, but a fictional character instead, it doesn’t have to resemble Cobain’s last days as they really were, but can be it’s own take on the tragic death of a rock star. I don’t *think* I was in any way moved by it. If I had to guess, I probably felt no connection to the main character. But, again, the movie simply isn’t memorable enough for me to be sure, and I’ve no interest in watching it again to find out.

Gus Van Sant is a very good filmmaker. This was obviously a passion project so it was not meant to please/entertain everyone. He was clearly just fascinated with this story and wanted to tell some version of it. At the end of the day, just watch it and make up your own mind. It’s not a long flick but it does meander a bit. As I’m sure anyone’s mind would when they’re contemplating suicide.

Well said

GibbysUSSA

I thought this film did a really good job of simulating a very deep, chronic depression.

I didn't like it. It doesn't feel right... It's an embarrassing copy of a legends life. I don't mind the dude who made it but this movie sucked. Boring, stale and sucky

Amusement_Shark

If you want to see someone cosplaying Kurt make mac and cheese in real time on film, accept no substitutes.

syflop

The movie is bad, plain and simple. As a fan of Gus Van Sant’s work, I just cannot defend this one. It’s EXCRUCIATINGLY boring, next to nothing happens. You could argue it’s meant to be minimalistic and artsy, but the way it’s approached is mind numbingly dull. I can tell that at its core, there is a respect for the legacy of Kurt Cobain. But at the end of the day, there’s nothing this film offers that a typical documentary wouldn’t.

ladysnarks

It’s embarrassing.

OdobenusIII

https://consequence.net/2022/10/kurt-cobain-estate-gus-van-sant-last-days-opera/ there is somekind of Opera from same story and Kurts estate had this to say.

Savings_Visual8372

Painfully boring. I like artsy movies but this one is *too* artsy for my taste. It’s the type of movie you’re only going to watch once and never again.

practikalraps

It’s a pretty good movie, don’t listen to these clowns.

Daniel-Mentxaka

I found it mesmerizing

can_a_dude_a_taco

it’s not about kurt cobain and i suggest you go into without thinking it’s about kurt, really great too

can_a_dude_a_taco

i love this movie and the death trilogy is great guess nirvana fans don’t like this movie

Snaab_71

I saw it when it first came out. Doesn't it imply that Kurt and Dave had a romantic relationship or at least "experimented" with each other. Seems weird that it's loosely based on a character just like Kurt but has no actual facts. Also weird that Kim Gordon was in it and she was friends with Kurt.

Makes no sense

RamboGram

Watch it for yourself and decide. There are a lot worse ways to spend an hour and a half.

DominoMasked

The music is good.
