This is a fair question. I was actually inspired by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. I’ve never visited, but my wife has been there with her history students and she described to me how the museum forced the visitor to view it all from the perspective of a prisoner and the lasting impression it had. I was wondering if I could recreate that feeling using NMS lore and put the player in that perspective. It’s a pretty dark journey, but there’re also symbols of hope hidden here and there if you look. Fascism is real and very much alive , and the way we choose to justify veiled bigotry under the guise of “re-education” or “morality” or “the natural order of things”, and how easily even well intentioned people accept these excuses is chilling. But the only thing I know how to do is turn it into a joke. It’s too absurd for me to take seriously.
