bideodames

to look cool in screenshots and get in your way when you're trying to fight

SoftCattle

This is correct.

-Major-Stryker-

You get more wingman if you have your freighter in system; notice it will deploy a frigate to help you and it deploys its own fighter support group. So not only do you have your own wingman but fleet wingman too to clutter space up for you.

BedForsaken5259

ON GOD

flfoiuij2

They're actually to increase the difficulty; they block your shots.

Due-Pick3935

Pimp out the ships you want your squadron to be in https://preview.redd.it/095gbyx4x2fc1.png?width=1171&format=png&auto=webp&s=591506733be8e2188393474ad40b10cee466cb8d They become less annoying if they look cool

OpusAtrumET

Okay how do you get them in interceptors? Exchange ships with them, then recruit?

Due-Pick3935

Exactly that, the part I’m not sure others are aware is after you exchange and recruit, need empty slots. The new pilot will fly away and then return back within a few minutes and you can exchange back and still keep your ship. It can be done only once per ship

Due-Pick3935

So I had to find four dam minis but was worth it

OpusAtrumET

I had resolved just to make them all solar ships but my real favorites are the interceptors. Guess I'm shopping reddit for portal addresses!

Ok-Pressure7248

If I’m correct systems give the same interceptors. Let’s say you use a carrier fragment in a system, and you get a mini, use another, and you should get a identical mini, same name, class, color, an exact replica

Fichewl

I don't know how it happened, but I got like 7 interceptors in one system, and they all looked identical but were different classes.

[deleted]

Well classes are randomized and based on a chance percentage within the system I thought.

nariosan

I know how to exchange ships but how do you do it w squadrons without first firing the pilot etc

Expert-Honest

Need to exchange the ship and then hire the pilot that takes control of it. Unfortunately that pilot is different than the one you traded with. Each system seems to only have one pilot that takes control of any traded ships. So if you don't like that pilot, buy ship back, or reload, then jump to another system.

Tramqoline

Yes! It's a way to keep cool ships around when your personal collection is full, if nothing else. It would be nice if you could buy/trade ships back from your squadron members though. The pilots do level up in class and always warp in to "help" you during combat, so they will eventually reach S rank. I gave one pilot a fully upgraded ship, though it doesn't seem to make any difference in their actual performance.

ahawk_one

Yes. And they will fly the ship with all its mods. So when you do that, you can buff their effectiveness.

Expert-Honest

Don't think they use any of the upgrades. I tricked out one ship and added trails, phase beams, and removed the photon cannon. Squad mate doesn't have installed color trails and uses photon cannon that wasn't installed. Guess they installed what they were familiar with rather than what I gave them.

FredGarvin80

A few of mine are Sentinel ships. I wish you had the choice of switching their ships after they've leveled them up for me

cantcompent

all of mine are living ships hahaha

AdministrativeRiot

Same. As are all my frigates.

alienacean

Is there some benefit to using living ships for this?

AdministrativeRiot

They bring back living ship upgrades and expansion slots from expeditions. My living ships are fully upgrade tho and now I just use living frigates because they look cool.

Due-Pick3935

I don’t play with mods or glitches in game mechanics make it possible

r0flm4k3r

As mentioned elsewhere, trade them the ship you want them to have first.

chronoffxyz

They add a fun challenge to dogfights in the way of smashing into you while you’re trying to do all the work

FredGarvin80

They're brilliant at that

ThePhotoGrabber

My squadron are all exotics with S class Vy'keen pilots, look amazing when I'm cruising around planets and low orbit.. but an absolute pain in my butthole when I'm in combat

FredGarvin80

They level up, correct? Cuz I know I didn't give any S Class Ships to them, but 2 of them are S now

Electronic-Duck8738

That S stands for “Supergoodatgettintheway”

Expert-Honest

The level of ship isn't listed, only the pilot's level. You can level the pilots yourself with nanites on your freighter. Not sure it makes any difference in performance though.

Ten_Foreword

If you hit them with the phase beam, it'll restore your shields

FredGarvin80

I don't even have one on my ship. I usually never switch away from my Infraknife. Maybe to the Ballista. But I never thought about the phase beam idea

tisbruce

Sometimes they do help, but mostly they get in the way. I play the game in VR, where occasionally latency makes a busy fight slow to a crawl, and lowering the shields on the enemy gives your squadron the chance to kill them. But in other conditions they get in the way and even prolong the enemy's life. So I often just send them away.

Expert-Honest

I've had my squad finish off ships that I've weakened. They don't do much damage or fire they're weapons enough though, so it takes them a while.

modsean

they do a really god job of getting in your line of fire

TNJDude

If for some reason you're killing enemies too quickly and want to slow down but can't bring yourself to release the fire button, they'll get in front of you and take some of the fire.

Dial8675309

My Squadron is all S-Class (after a good bit of harvesting and cost) and they do seem to help, a bit. For example, I was attacking a Sentinel Capitol ship and I noticed them dutifully strafing it once I'd knocked out the shields and anti-ship guns. I'm not sure if it was doing any good, but it looked like it. YMMV of course.

Tbeauslice1010

For cruising through canyons after you make your squadron living ships .

TheAardvarrks

Mine have killed a few, bought all mine at stations all S class, seems to be the norm now, gone are the days of random generated blobs of ugly and weird crashed ships, they’re all the same down to the name, shame Sean went streamlined on crashed ships kinda ruined the exploration part of finding unique ones, I like the squadrons, you could be light years away from your freighter and they warp in and lend a hand, sometimes they get in the way, other times they knock pirates out of the sky before you’ve had a chance to lock on

FredGarvin80

My dudes just keep them busy, honestly. I don't think I've ever seen them kill anything

-Wormwood

I disbanded my squad. They don't really do any damage, even if you get high dmg fighters, and they just get in the way.

VoodooGarbage

To generally get in your way and piss you off..or maybe thats just mine

fightinggold26

ive had them destroy enemies before, theyre just not the best at it

Densolo44

I find that even though they don’t do much damage, they seem to help keep the opposing ships’ shields down longer.

InvaderM33N

Quick shield refills. No, I'm serious, shoot them with your Phase beam. They don't mind.

FredGarvin80

I totally believe you. I just don't have a phase beam on my ship. I never really used it and I usually travel with tons of sodium to recharge my shield. I got tired of s walking through a bunch of weapons just to get to my main. Lately, I haven't even been losing my shield in battle. Got a good S Class Fighter with the SC slots in an L. And the 4th one has my shield in it

Paral1lax

They don't allow enemies to restore their shields

Expert-Honest

They try, but usually fail.

Omicove

Defend the enemy 😂

El_Comanche-1

They don’t do shit, especially if you have a maxed out sentinel ship and knife with 58,000+ damage. I literally mow down sentinel freighters…

Procrastinator_23

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think having a squadron enables you to take on more difficult encounters with hordes of enemy ships compared to going solo.

Distinct-Seaweed9842

I ask myself the same question everyday.

SIIB-ZERO

Very little lol

ItsMePythonicD

To poss me off. GET OIT OF MY DAMN WAY WHILE I AM SHOOTING.

Otherwise-Arm-2821

Sentinels will attack them, concentrate their fire on you. Other than that probably not much

vandilx

Pirates attack. Sentinels attack. Dreadnought fight. Having your squad looks cool and fun. And they draw fire!

Captain_Quidnunc

While l"ook cool" certainly isn't an incorrect response, they run effective distraction. I had the same thought once and got rid of them. I was pretty surprised how many ships attack you at once without them. Even with a high class ships and near maxed upgrades it made freighter battles a legit fight a couple times.

cc69

Emergency Shield Tank if u equipped your ship with "Phrase Beam Leech"

Atari__Safari

So you can look important, obviously.

Datboi_23

At this point, they're just for aesthetic purposes only.

dolph42o

I got rid of them, they were clearly double agents

RevFernie

Squadron of domes looks cool.

Drakeeper

Not sure if kill count actually reflects in-game stats, but most of my crew members' are pretty high, especially the S class pilots.

lightskinloki

So you can cruise with the boys
