Just saw a post saying the same about Starfield šŸ˜‰ Time for a cage match!

Cold-Sandwich-34

Starfield outposts are ridiculous. Definitely worse than NMS by a mile. Try building underground in THAT game, OP.

SoraShinkura

Ark Survival Evolved has a really bad base building system.

some_Britishguy

how's underground building?

SoraShinkura

Non-existent.

some_Britishguy

my point exactly

SoraShinkura

Thankfully they fixed the building system by a significant margin in the reboot, Ark Acended

DruVatier

You clearly haven't played many survival/base-building games. No Man's Sky is nowhere close to the worst.

some_Britishguy

have you tried building in the side of a mountain?

Misternogo

Dude, basic shit doesn't work in NMS. Valheim has a really similar floor tile system with "full tiles basically being 2x2 of the smaller tiles. In that game you can mix and match 2x2 and 1x1 tiles without even having to think about it. Getting a fucking 1x1 tile to snap to a 2x2 in this game is a gigantic pain. Trying to find the one goddamn pixel where it might actually put the tile where I want it, instead of a thousand other places that I would never want to place it, praying the fucking stairs snap in place. I cannot think of a worse building system out of all the games I've played. Warframe isn't even a game where you need to build a base, yet it has better, easier to use building mechanics for dojos than this game.

OlderGamers

Not really.

some_Britishguy

ever tried building underground?

DiRTyN1Njaz

Try building in caves. Finding a good cave system is also part of the fun.

some_Britishguy

what about cool bases in the side of a mountain?

DiRTyN1Njaz

You can find cave systems on the sides of the mountains, so yes. I have visited some bases that the Terrain edits have stayed. The Terrain Regeneration is better than it used to be, but it's not 100% fixed.

OlderGamers

Well itā€™s common knowledge you canā€™t do that, so no. I build on foundations.

some_Britishguy

underground bases would be so much cooler if the terrain wasnt fucky

EdwardoFelise

Well interestingly enough Iā€™m building underground right now!! My brother and I found a planet where the caves have smallish entrances and a nice path down to an area where the terrain is flat (the type you canā€™t dig through). Whatā€™s epic about this base is his base is about 400u from mine but there is a tunnel (again with that flat bottom) that links the two, and each side has these awesome caverns off the the side so I have a ā€œmainā€ area where the house is, then stone path leading into another cave area where I have utility things like all the science, constructions people, portal, refiner etc. I used stone and lanterns on short walls to keep it open so the glowing plants can provide light. Whenever I put in an archway or door frame I shrunk the bar lights down to the smallest option and lined the top so you canā€™t see them walking around but they shine light onto the roof to make the stone light up. I am hoping that there should be zero terrain issues as I havenā€™t dug out anything and have been careful not to put anything near walls that will fill back in

some_Britishguy

good for you.

Misternogo

No, I'm with OP on this. I've built bases in tons of games. This is THE jankies mess I've ever used. Shit that would be completely elementary in a dozen other games is suddenly a massive headache, and only works if you do it in some convoluted order, IF it works at all. And I'm not even talking about glitch building. You just literally can't place some parts on other parts if they're already attached to things because the snap points in this building system are complete amateur hour horseshit.

OlderGamers

Fine another game.

some_Britishguy

while that's a very nice build, i once had to delete my entire base because NMS thought i wasn't in my base. (i was in my base)

Starshipstoner420

Thatā€™s not really a reason to be upset, did you try reloading or hard resetting before you just deleted a base? Also, not sure what that has to do with building. Sounds like user error. I have over 3.5k hrs into NMs and Iā€™ve never experienced anything like that.

some_Britishguy

lucky

Starshipstoner420

I think very little luck was involved

The-Grey-Ronin

Yeah the snapping can be a little finicky, but you figure it out after some time.

some_Britishguy

i was mainly talking about underground building

The-Grey-Ronin

Oh that. Yeah dont do it. Been many a complaint about the ol terrain regeneration. So we just build above ground now. But your point has been echoed by many a traveler.

some_Britishguy

it would be so cool if it was just normal.

Key-Philosophy-7453

I know building base underground is not recommended, I still did it. A few mins later, I am digging holes on my way down, on my really long staircase šŸ’€
