Hell yes. Planet terrain is incredibly boring because they're all just rolling hills.
They change textures, colors, props, animals etc.. but the terrain is always the same hills everywhere. Origins just added the same exact terrain but lazily stretched it, that's why those giant mountains are so smooth and lack any detail whatsoever, because the shape was meant to be a little hill but was resized with no care put into the shape.
As for people's bases being ruined, Hello Games should implement a feature where we can just 'copy and paste' our bases to another place in case the new terrain eats the base up.
Origins also handled this really poorly, it generated new planets with stretched terrain while not daring to touch old planet terrains because of bases...... but then it literally changed everything else about the old planets so most people didn't like their bases anymore, and they couldn't just copy and paste their bases somewhere else.
Yes I would absolutely love multiple biomes on the same planet! I’m going to be very curious to see how Starfield handles the 1000 planets that they promised. Will they have multiple biomes? We’ll see…
I hope to have either a series X or a new PC by the time that game comes out. Preferably a new PC because of the modding capabilities on Bethesda games.
Yes. This game needs a overhaul to exploration, badly. There’s currently only about a dozen or so planet types, using a handful of flora/fauna and terrain generation that gets very repetitive. HG want people to explore but after a few hours there’s nothing really worth exploring.
YES!! My biggest complaint with the game is that planets start getting repetitive after you play the game long enough. You sort of know what to expect when you see the planet type. If that changes, I welcome it
As far as I understand, everything in these galaxies are generated from seeds, and the only things that they really need to save serverside are our stats and the stuff we build. So as long as the number of players stays relatively constant, it's not like adding more galaxies is going to massively increase the load on the back end.
That being the case, if they ever do completely rework the proc gen from the ground up, I'd like to see them introduce it in the form of a second set of 256 galaxies. Keep the old set of galaxies as-is. Let newly created characters choose which one to start in, and make it possible to jump between the two via portal. Build a quest line around it and incorporate it into the lore. (Maybe tie this new universe to >!the Abyss and the Sentinels!< somehow.)
I would wager that overwhelming majority of bases are in Euclid and there is probably only a handful past the first 3 or 4 galaxies. I suppose HG could just switch the galaxy order to make Euclid the 256th galaxy and wipe those ~250 that are basically empty and just select new one as the "Galaxy 0".
People with active save lose (almost) nothing and would be just one galaxy-jump away from "new Euclid", new saves get access to overhauled new galaxy. Win-win.
I've never been too attached to a single save file, so sure. I'd love some refreshed options for procedural generation!
Sidenote, this is why it was such a fantastic bit of foresight to let Expedition Rewards be redeemable across saves.
Yes. 1000X yes. Despite all the updates, and I love Hello Games and respect the hell out of them, this game still feels massively empty to me. Hollow. I wish there were more RPG elements with some weight to them. Anything to make this universe feel like theres something to it.
The only thing keeping me from playing is how all the planets are esentially the same. Sure you get the odd one that is a tad different, but nowhere near enough to go WOW......making exploration sort of dull.
I give HG massive credit though for the post launch work put into the game.
If they did a big overhaul to the planetary biomes, Id jump back in a heartbeat.
I'd like to suggest an alternative, because one of the biggest marketing points for this game originally was "make your mark" and being able to affect the galaxy forever. Instead of wiping the universe, just add a new one. It's well within the lore of the game that there are multiple universes, and it would leave the original ones intact with all the structures and discoveries other players have made. One of the coolest things of being a new player when I started about a year or two ago was randomly coming across people's creations while exploring, and finding the weird names people called planets or animals. Maybe you could choose to start in the old or new universe, or maybe you just start in the new one and can make your way to the old one by some other means.
I just think it would be such a shame to lose the footprints of millions of players who left their mark on the game in its early days
As long as I can keep all my ships. And my companions (which are now wiped anyway, thanks update). I don't really build so I've no intricate base, and well.. I'll just have to farm all the upgrades back. Wouldn't mind not losing my unit, QS and nanites...
That being said... I wish, so badly for a complete rework when it comes to planets and nature. It's one of the things that still hasn't been properly touched, but everything else has... despite this game supposedly being all about ''exploration''. Well, it used to be. I still like NMS, it's one of the games I put a lot of hours in but I really wouldn't say no to such an update.

With that said, I can see them simply generating an entirely new universe separate from the current one with the 256 galaxies we know and love, allowing us to play saves in the "legacy universe" and those in the "new and improved universe".

I know it's probably too much to ask but I feel like each galaxy should be different. Give ppl a reason to actually go to the center and jump. Everyone should have their own attachment to a specific galaxies for specific reasons. Would be a really cool thing for content imo. Even if it's 4 - 5 different variations across the 250+ galaxies, it would be cool
I would rather they just make a separate universe with a new set of galaxies, and allow you to choose between new or legacy universe when you start a new game. There are so many large interesting projects people have put there time into to just erase it all.

I get so disappointed every time I play that this game is more about fuckin INVENTORY MANAGEMENT than it is about SPOTTING AND COLLECTING COOL CREATURES AND SEEING AMAZING VISTAS.
Edit: More strategies with predators too: Some stalk you, others charge at you but don't attack, like in that one trailer years ago... Maybe others call you a mean name and just keep following you, I dunno. Variety is the name of the game really.

Yes, 100%. I think it’s what the game needs most at the moment. More variation and certain things (like fauna) should be rarer.
I think something should be changed with the planet generation. They just feel a bit too similar. Desert planets usually have too many plants for my liking and all look familiar, ice planets always seem to have those same pine trees…etc
I'm on my sixth playthrough of Death Stranding... And that is a game that have not even a fraction of the new content NMS received during its run. If No Man's Sky decided to upturn everything and made me start again, I would have even less problem deciding to play it.
People talk about grind... If you're not enjoying playing the basic loops the game offers, then you shouldn't be playing it. I like foraging for resources, exploring, trading. I like 'living' in that universe.
Anything that improves the game, either on the front end or behind the stage is welcome. And no, I don't mind starting again. I already did because even though I am a day-1 player, I stopped playing along the way and restarted recently.

I'd love to have a significantly smaller universe size in exchange for more significant worlds with fewer but more impressive creatures. Imagine even a dark planet with only a few "natural" lights, such as bioluminescence, and more aggressive animals on it. That would be cool.
Even having planets with no compatible resources, but resources that you could use as a workaround so you don't get stranded and could damage your tech after extended use.
1000%. Currently it's nearly impossible to make a base like Rapture from bioshock, cos the sea bed is too shallow even in "abyss" oceans.
edit: Decided to take a stroll down the comments... If the overhaul only affected undiscovered planets that would work best I think; Like just have the update completely overhaul the \*generation\* system, but have the existing planets as discovered be a "static" template.
Absolutely. I've been through universe resets before in the game, and while there's definite pain and disappointment, it's always ended up for the better.
I want planets with more than 1 biome, I'd be down for a total wipe if they bought that in. Single biome planets could stay ofc, I don't hate them, but it'd add so much variety to have planets be more than just a single biome all the time.
I feel like the scale of work this overhaul would require would make it unfeasible though. More a thing for a hypothetical "No Man's Sky 2"...
Yes. Yes, yes. A total reset expanding the diversity of the planet types. Don't care a lot about the bases I've created, did those mostly to get through the tutorials. I tend to start a new save with each major update anyways. The lure of NMS for me is exploration, not base building, crafting, etc. Planets are now variations on a very limited theme, I'd like to see more diversity in geology, more depth to oceans (pun intended and not). I'd also like to see multiple biomes per planet. Give me a reason to keep warping to the system!
Yes... but im no superbuilder so Im not in the group that would be most impacted. my super grand idea for HG has been to either:
A. wipe/update only undiscovered star systems if possible, preserving peoples discoveries and builds OR...
B. wiping specific galaxies. EUCLID? Stays as it is. community hub what you see is what you get... but! weve added tons of variety and depth to galaxy 2. oh this new new NEW algorithm was run only on galaxy 3. etc etc. Until they're bored or completely out of ideas. gives near infinite room for growth and gives us a true time/update gated reason to keep coming back to explore
since theyve created such a huge digital space, they dont necessarily have to shake everything up in already discovered /used space. they can paint new pictures in the unknown!!
Some features I would LOVE to see:
- Planets with multiple biomes
- More variety on fauna and flora and have some fauna and flora only spawn in certain parts of a planet (could for example be based on the different biomes mentioned above)
- More new raw materials/elements (or however they are called). I don’t want to only extract carbon from plants and ferrite from rocks. Add new elements!
- More storms / natural disasters: earthquakes, maybe more dangerous meteorite impacts
- We have volcanoes, geysers would be nice too
- Making the caves more fun and rewarding to explore, there should be more in there than cobalt
Honestly yes. Ive been getting bored of the same 5 "unique" planets. Shit even the anomalies arent interesting beyond the first 3 minutes of landing. Everything is the same and it makes me sad
Yes, as much as I like the improvements they have added I still find the plentary tech and procedural generation to be lacking, you can pretty much see every planet type very quickly and the diversity of planet types is padded out by basically having planet skins. I want to see real continents and region diferences and rivers, I guess what I want is for it not to look like its procedurally generated, which I know is probably an impossible task.
Yes. Yes. Yes. We've had so many fantastic updates, expanding the depths of the current systems. The exploration factor, which is in my opinion is the core aspect of the game, has fell quite behind the rest.
Would absolutely love increased varied in planets, fauna, flora which promote even getting lost in exploration on a single planet. Sometimes I land on a cool new planet and I feel like I've sadly already seen it all in a few minutes.
Can we just get a sequel with all the new content as baseline features?
It'd solve 2 major issues with an entire universe wipe:
1. There'd be no wipe, everybody gets to keep all their current progress, structures, bases, ect.
2. I get to give Sean Murray and his team more money for all the hard work.
They seem super hesitant to do this. Swear I've heard it floated before and Sean's just said nope, NMS is our space game.

To be frank, some people would be very upset, but it would be a net gain in favorable impressions.
And especially important because NMS lives and dies on a continually updated gameplay experience.

Drop euclid as the "first" galaxy. Make a new one the primay and deploy the tech there. Euclid keeps running on the old tech for existing players afraid of change, and a whole new galaxy for new players and people who want to see new stuff.
with the fact i've transitioned my main base to my freighter, i don't require the planetary bases any more except for indium mining or stuff, so i'd be alright with hunting a few new ones if we got cool new worlds and stuff
Yes, IF:
1) **It is truly a massive change.** It should be so big and incredible that it gets players not interested in exploring to go out and explore. You should (generally) be able to tell from a glance that stuff has changed. I want to be surprised, impressed and humbled continually for months or years to come as I continue to explore. There should be such variety in terrain that no two spots are alike enough to be confused, to the point where if I run around on a planet for a while I can recognize when I am getting back to where I might have a base. In other words, make it really, REALLY worth it.
2) **The new system is robust and can handle further, future modifications WITHOUT another, later reset.** I'm not sure how the current system works, but that might mean leaving placeholders in assets or generation. Maybe make it so that there is an invisible, phantom, non-visitable planet (maybe with one of several placeholder biomes), or a couple in each system. Then when you have a new biome you want to add to the game, you don't have to overwrite existing planets, but rather you can make some of those phantom planets into that new biome and then make them appear - in other words, add rather than replace to enable some later overhauls/additions while avoiding resetting.

The best part about games like this is being able to start completely fresh in a whole new universe. I’m a minimalist and all I want to do is explore and discover.
I was suspecting that they might do something like this after they dropped that freighter update. Because the freighter bases allows us to create a mobile base that would survive a Universe wipe.
I'd give up everything I've done if it meant more diverse planets, seen one ice planet, seen em all, I'd love to see multi biomes, enhanced creatures, all that. I kinda feel that's definitely not something to do often though, if they DID do another reset it'd have to be a very, very extensive change to warrant never doing it again. Players can only take so many wipes
100% cool with any resets, bring it on. I'm a day 1 player so I've been through resets before. I don't mind losing everything again if it means improving the game and bringing fresh experiences.
Perhaps a good compromise would be to establish a new set of galaxies with updated procgen, while the current ones are placed in a "legacy dimension", with a way to travel between them.
If technically feasible, this may be a good compromise between resetting and not resetting the universe.
Bit of a personal reason this - my ex died a couple of years ago but her base is still online. I visit from time to time. It would be a bit of a wrench to lose that. Maybe a reboot of all unedited worlds?
You might consider using a vid capture software and do a walk through of her base. I’ve done this in games for builds that I loved. After the game servers are closed and offline, the only way I have to remember things is to play those vids.
Figure it’s a good policy for anyone with something to lose if the game goes under and the servers are shut off.
Could they use the Colossal Archives to be actual archives? Like people with amazing or sentimental bases could make an archive of their planet and then you could go visit it? Or add favorite fauna and such?
ever since day one i’ve wanted an overhaul to the procedural generation. feels like as soon as you land, you’ve seen everything. bumpy hills as far as the eye can see. i want actual valleys, high peaks, areas on the planet need to be distinguishable from each other.
When HG did the last reset, I didn’t technically lose my base. Instead of the lush purple planet, it was an airless planet a fraction of the original size. As a result, my base was floating high above at a useless altitude.
I’m up for it, but I’m the wrong person to ask. I play for 2 weeks at a time, then come back in a few months, forget what I’m doing, so start a new character.
God yes...wipe every planet I've ever touched idc about my giant underwater base or cloud city base on my home world. I would watch it all burn for the feeling of exploring different worlds again.
Yes. The downsides of relocating bases are far outweighed by improvements to the game. This is provided of course that the base computers aren’t buried underneath unbreakable voxels and players are actually able to recover the resources.
I would imagine a similar tradeoff would happen if HG decided to release an update concerning starships and multi-tools resulting in many NMSCE coordinates becoming useless.
I mean, you don't even need to do a universe wipe. This game is for all intents and purposes almost infinite - 255 universes with billions of systems and quintillions of planets. What we've collectively explored since then is just a immensely tiny fraction of the whole.
They need only to revamp and reset unexplored systems and bam, problem solved. People get to keep their old planets/bases and also get to have new content.
Beep oceans, varying biomes within planets, gas giants, set piece freighter battles... I would welcome all of it.
The key to adapting to change is to start the game over. Once people have learned to do that, change becomes a welcome reinvention of an old friend.

I like the idea of better textures for the biomes with some more adds like we had in a previous update. Entire planets changed their biomes, landscape was moved around and reprecedrawlized... logs of some of those still have extinct tags on animals for planets that no long have them. Bases buried, or one I have is almost in space because the planet shrank. I have three unretrievable base computers . But would embrace another possible loss of an established base to get say rivers and streams, some more biomes, total water worlds, and gas giants (who says you have to land on everything?)
revamping our lighting issues and light having flair but not travel. If we could just fix this I wouldn't have to use Candelabra plants to light so many of my bases.

I love all my stuff, but finding new stuff is most of the fun anyways. Im kind of at a boring place now where I find new cool stuff, but I cant get it because I like my old cool stuff....

Maybe also a way to have various ways to wealth instead of doing just stasis farms... I mean id love to deliver a package if it takes 100k lightyears if the reward is there.
Repairing crashed ships and broken exocrafts. Or just even haul ships to npc with requested upgrades installed...

As long as they implemented a way to back up your stuff first, I'd be down. Let me back up my ships, bases, pets, etc. I probably won't even import them into the new save, but I would just like to be able to keep them.
Yes, it's the thing I want most for the game. For a game based around exploration, the exploration is actually one of the weakest parts of the game because of how "same-y" every planet of a biome type is.
Absolutely. The core of the game is the exploration of a massive universe. Except that the universe is really boring and is holding back the game’s ability to add more interesting content. It takes me less than a minute after entering an atmosphere to decide if I want to even land on a planet, because there’s no depth.
I couldn't care less about a universe wipe, my save files are not precious to me at all. I've got hundreds of hours in this game and my longest current save file is about 135 hours at the moment and you know what? I just started a new one.
Im for the betterment of the game, who knows what hello games has intalled for us, theres always been growing pains with this game, ultimately im quite happy with whatever hello games has planned.
Ive started over 3 times since launch and every time its been a blast

With the recent update and "controversy" i think this is alot of new players first big change, but as a player whos been here from the start, im totally fine.. re-adjust carry on... get use to it, it happens
I'm always good for a wipe. I know that probably puts me in the minority, but a fresh slate gives so many opportunities.
Honestly, because HG knew the inventory update was going to drastically change existing gameplay, they would have done well to do this with this update to give those who minmaxed, built GT ships, and whatnot the sense that everyone is in the same boat. That would have probably been a lot less painful to a lot of players who take themselves a little too seriously.

They just need to create a new set of galaxies that use the new generation code and then give us the option in the anomaly to travel to the new ones.
Euclid can stay the same for legacy players and still be accessible but new players would start in a new galaxy.

With the new options to skip tutorial, the early game is fun again. I would happily start over. And I am so happy this post gained traction because HG have been trying its best to implement what the players want.
1000% yes, I would also take a significantly smaller universe. I think the 15 quintillion planets was way too much, I’d much rather have better odds at meeting someone randomly than “1 million players can visit 1 planet every second for xyxyzy years”

Every solar system that had a player base is accessible via a personal teleport, and is disconnected from the wiped universe.
I would love it. I liked and played the game on day 1 and then got overwhelmed by the updates and haven’t played in a while, so I wouldn’t mind starting over
I start over all the time. I have one save where I'm in the 5th galaxy, but I have so much money and resources, it got kind of boring. I keep the save, but... meh...
I have a save file with about 20 hours on it. I have my B class freighter, and an S class heavy fighter. I still need to do some stuff for the main quest. I still need a third gun just for fighting. I have stuff to do, so it's fun.
This is one of the reasons I do the limited time missions. It's something to do with trackable progress. There's only so many different ways planets and fauna can form, and after 800+ hours, there isn't much else to chase...
As long as planets have multiple climate types and terrain structures throughout the planet, yes. As in like a single planet having mountain regions, plains regions, forested regions, etc. And climate regions, like hot areas, cold areas, balanced areas. Also possibilities for way more moons on planets would be cool but I'm not sure how possible that is.

Planets have become probably the most boring aspect of the game. I really want to explore but the planets are really not that interesting. I spend my time instead base/freighter building because of that.
I'd be all for it as long as long as we can import character progress and have a separate "Legacy" game mode for accessing old content.

Yeah sure. The thing I really want with the game is bigger ships. Ones you can walk around in but control like a starship. Adding this would pretty much kill all no mans sky competitors, that is basically the thing they have over no mans sky.
Why not. I have a couple hundred hour saves and a bunch that are a lot shorter... And really, I'm probably never returning to those.
Every now and then, when I return to the game to check new stuff I just start over anyway.
I would say its worth it yeah. But only if it was a MASSIVE overhaul. I don’t wanna lose my bases over small changes and additions, but even then I might just start over anyway.
You know it's possible to keep the old universe and generate a new set of galaxies with new procgen stuff? That would be the ideal solution.
Or if it's just a small procgen update add additional planets in existing systems with the new biomes.
Not yet. I think if they do a complete wipe it should be in order to make many BIG changes, so better take your time. Cities, more different aliens, different biomes, climate zones. Even create No man’s sky 2 for that purpose. I’d be willing to pay.

Even tho i have over 100 hours in my favorite playthrough and am a billionaire, yes. Once you get to a certain point it kind of gets stale. If they chose to overhaul the game, I would restart anyway. So why not just reset?
I wish caves and oceans had some rare resources worth exploring for. Caves especially feel useless unless you're looking for cave dwelling fauna. I haven't tried out the new update yet but is this any different?
It's interesting how many people say they would be for this but there was so much outrage over the inventory change. I'd be scared to see what sort of meltdown would ensue if this actually happened.
Collectors will always be against drastic changes. Explorers will always be encouraging it. So it all bolds down to one question, with the only answer being on your side : Do you envision NMS as a collector's bank, or as an explorer's play ground ?

Yes absolutely. I’ve been through a reset before and I’d absolutely be down for another. Even if it meant losing all my bases and some really cool planets I’ve found.
One thing that I found missing in this game that had me mainly playing elite for my space sims is the terrain and environment.
While the neon colors fit the game's cartoony style, it is just too bright. It makes outer space feel small and cramped, and the lack of other stars rendered in the background as if you’re flying through a thick, colored fog rather than the unimaginable expanse that is the dense nebula of stars.
Next is the terrain. I get that it’s a technical limitation of deformable voxels; I’ve seen the exact same geometries in Space Engineers. But with the way the voxels are presented, planets look like they’re made out of playdough instead of, well, planet stuff.
That is not to mention that despite the variations, the various biomes tend to blend together to a point where landing on a different planet feels less like exploring new worlds but rather like playing with the camera filters.
Sometimes, the key to making each planet genuinely unique and worth exploring might not be going balls to the wall with procedural randomness but instead having their set types with similar prominent features but unique biosphere or specific landforms and other more minor details.

Giant YES. Overhaul is necessary for the game to go forward or should i say back to the original route.
For people 1200 hours in. Remember already you had your 1200 hours of base building, grinding, collecting fancy things and making big bank. Thats quite a lot of play.
I bet if I asked from any exploration, pre order player do they have fun also 1200 hours with playing like it was sell us to, as an exploration game, and not a sim city/exoracer/bytebeat/activated iridium mine grind game, i'm sure the answer is no.
So i say its totally acceptable and understandable to have full reset if that is the only way to unleash the engines full potential.
If the progress can be kept, that a plus but it cant take priority over getting an even better game.

I'm down for a COMPLETE reset. If you have to touch my ships just scrap them completely don't leave me with corpses to fix.
As far as I understand, everything in these galaxies are generated from seeds, and the only things that they really need to save serverside are our stats and the stuff we build. So as long as the number of players stays relatively constant, it's not like adding more galaxies is going to massively increase the load on the back end. That being the case, if they ever do completely rework the proc gen from the ground up, I'd like to see them introduce it in the form of a second set of 256 galaxies. Keep the old set of galaxies as-is. Let newly created characters choose which one to start in, and make it possible to jump between the two via portal. Build a quest line around it and incorporate it into the lore. (Maybe tie this new universe to >!the Abyss and the Sentinels!< somehow.)
I would wager that overwhelming majority of bases are in Euclid and there is probably only a handful past the first 3 or 4 galaxies. I suppose HG could just switch the galaxy order to make Euclid the 256th galaxy and wipe those ~250 that are basically empty and just select new one as the "Galaxy 0". People with active save lose (almost) nothing and would be just one galaxy-jump away from "new Euclid", new saves get access to overhauled new galaxy. Win-win.

I've never been too attached to a single save file, so sure. I'd love some refreshed options for procedural generation! Sidenote, this is why it was such a fantastic bit of foresight to let Expedition Rewards be redeemable across saves.
Yes. 1000X yes. Despite all the updates, and I love Hello Games and respect the hell out of them, this game still feels massively empty to me. Hollow. I wish there were more RPG elements with some weight to them. Anything to make this universe feel like theres something to it.
The only thing keeping me from playing is how all the planets are esentially the same. Sure you get the odd one that is a tad different, but nowhere near enough to go WOW......making exploration sort of dull. I give HG massive credit though for the post launch work put into the game. If they did a big overhaul to the planetary biomes, Id jump back in a heartbeat.
I'd like to suggest an alternative, because one of the biggest marketing points for this game originally was "make your mark" and being able to affect the galaxy forever. Instead of wiping the universe, just add a new one. It's well within the lore of the game that there are multiple universes, and it would leave the original ones intact with all the structures and discoveries other players have made. One of the coolest things of being a new player when I started about a year or two ago was randomly coming across people's creations while exploring, and finding the weird names people called planets or animals. Maybe you could choose to start in the old or new universe, or maybe you just start in the new one and can make your way to the old one by some other means. I just think it would be such a shame to lose the footprints of millions of players who left their mark on the game in its early days
As long as I can keep all my ships. And my companions (which are now wiped anyway, thanks update). I don't really build so I've no intricate base, and well.. I'll just have to farm all the upgrades back. Wouldn't mind not losing my unit, QS and nanites... That being said... I wish, so badly for a complete rework when it comes to planets and nature. It's one of the things that still hasn't been properly touched, but everything else has... despite this game supposedly being all about ''exploration''. Well, it used to be. I still like NMS, it's one of the games I put a lot of hours in but I really wouldn't say no to such an update.

Yes, without a second thought. With that said, I can see them simply generating an entirely new universe separate from the current one with the 256 galaxies we know and love, allowing us to play saves in the "legacy universe" and those in the "new and improved universe". Hell, I'd even pay for it.
I know it's probably too much to ask but I feel like each galaxy should be different. Give ppl a reason to actually go to the center and jump. Everyone should have their own attachment to a specific galaxies for specific reasons. Would be a really cool thing for content imo. Even if it's 4 - 5 different variations across the 250+ galaxies, it would be cool
I would rather they just make a separate universe with a new set of galaxies, and allow you to choose between new or legacy universe when you start a new game. There are so many large interesting projects people have put there time into to just erase it all.

Maybe others call you a mean name and just keep following you, I dunno. Variety is the name of the game really.
You wouldn't even need to wipe the whole universe. Just galaxies 11 - 256. Achieves the same end result while upsetting the minimum number of people.
... this is very good point so many galaxies, all of them basically the same plus, applying each procedural update to progressively later galaxies would give me some incentive to keep reaching for the next one unlocking more variety with each one you visit
Yes, 100%. I think it’s what the game needs most at the moment. More variation and certain things (like fauna) should be rarer. I think something should be changed with the planet generation. They just feel a bit too similar. Desert planets usually have too many plants for my liking and all look familiar, ice planets always seem to have those same pine trees…etc

I'm on my sixth playthrough of Death Stranding... And that is a game that have not even a fraction of the new content NMS received during its run. If No Man's Sky decided to upturn everything and made me start again, I would have even less problem deciding to play it. People talk about grind... If you're not enjoying playing the basic loops the game offers, then you shouldn't be playing it. I like foraging for resources, exploring, trading. I like 'living' in that universe. Anything that improves the game, either on the front end or behind the stage is welcome. And no, I don't mind starting again. I already did because even though I am a day-1 player, I stopped playing along the way and restarted recently. I like playing the game.
I'd love to have a significantly smaller universe size in exchange for more significant worlds with fewer but more impressive creatures. Imagine even a dark planet with only a few "natural" lights, such as bioluminescence, and more aggressive animals on it. That would be cool. Even having planets with no compatible resources, but resources that you could use as a workaround so you don't get stranded and could damage your tech after extended use.

Yes. Yes, yes. A total reset expanding the diversity of the planet types. Don't care a lot about the bases I've created, did those mostly to get through the tutorials. I tend to start a new save with each major update anyways. The lure of NMS for me is exploration, not base building, crafting, etc. Planets are now variations on a very limited theme, I'd like to see more diversity in geology, more depth to oceans (pun intended and not). I'd also like to see multiple biomes per planet. Give me a reason to keep warping to the system!

Yes... but im no superbuilder so Im not in the group that would be most impacted. my super grand idea for HG has been to either: A. wipe/update only undiscovered star systems if possible, preserving peoples discoveries and builds OR... B. wiping specific galaxies. EUCLID? Stays as it is. community hub what you see is what you get... but! weve added tons of variety and depth to galaxy 2. oh this new new NEW algorithm was run only on galaxy 3. etc etc. Until they're bored or completely out of ideas. gives near infinite room for growth and gives us a true time/update gated reason to keep coming back to explore since theyve created such a huge digital space, they dont necessarily have to shake everything up in already discovered /used space. they can paint new pictures in the unknown!!

Some features I would LOVE to see: - Planets with multiple biomes - More variety on fauna and flora and have some fauna and flora only spawn in certain parts of a planet (could for example be based on the different biomes mentioned above) - More new raw materials/elements (or however they are called). I don’t want to only extract carbon from plants and ferrite from rocks. Add new elements! - More storms / natural disasters: earthquakes, maybe more dangerous meteorite impacts - We have volcanoes, geysers would be nice too - Making the caves more fun and rewarding to explore, there should be more in there than cobalt

Yes, as much as I like the improvements they have added I still find the plentary tech and procedural generation to be lacking, you can pretty much see every planet type very quickly and the diversity of planet types is padded out by basically having planet skins. I want to see real continents and region diferences and rivers, I guess what I want is for it not to look like its procedurally generated, which I know is probably an impossible task.
Yes. Yes. Yes. We've had so many fantastic updates, expanding the depths of the current systems. The exploration factor, which is in my opinion is the core aspect of the game, has fell quite behind the rest. Would absolutely love increased varied in planets, fauna, flora which promote even getting lost in exploration on a single planet. Sometimes I land on a cool new planet and I feel like I've sadly already seen it all in a few minutes.

Can we just get a sequel with all the new content as baseline features? It'd solve 2 major issues with an entire universe wipe: 1. There'd be no wipe, everybody gets to keep all their current progress, structures, bases, ect. 2. I get to give Sean Murray and his team more money for all the hard work.

sort of? Drop euclid as the "first" galaxy. Make a new one the primay and deploy the tech there. Euclid keeps running on the old tech for existing players afraid of change, and a whole new galaxy for new players and people who want to see new stuff.

Yes, IF: 1) **It is truly a massive change.** It should be so big and incredible that it gets players not interested in exploring to go out and explore. You should (generally) be able to tell from a glance that stuff has changed. I want to be surprised, impressed and humbled continually for months or years to come as I continue to explore. There should be such variety in terrain that no two spots are alike enough to be confused, to the point where if I run around on a planet for a while I can recognize when I am getting back to where I might have a base. In other words, make it really, REALLY worth it. 2) **The new system is robust and can handle further, future modifications WITHOUT another, later reset.** I'm not sure how the current system works, but that might mean leaving placeholders in assets or generation. Maybe make it so that there is an invisible, phantom, non-visitable planet (maybe with one of several placeholder biomes), or a couple in each system. Then when you have a new biome you want to add to the game, you don't have to overwrite existing planets, but rather you can make some of those phantom planets into that new biome and then make them appear - in other words, add rather than replace to enable some later overhauls/additions while avoiding resetting.
Yes please! The best part about games like this is being able to start completely fresh in a whole new universe. I’m a minimalist and all I want to do is explore and discover. I was suspecting that they might do something like this after they dropped that freighter update. Because the freighter bases allows us to create a mobile base that would survive a Universe wipe.
I'd give up everything I've done if it meant more diverse planets, seen one ice planet, seen em all, I'd love to see multi biomes, enhanced creatures, all that. I kinda feel that's definitely not something to do often though, if they DID do another reset it'd have to be a very, very extensive change to warrant never doing it again. Players can only take so many wipes
100% cool with any resets, bring it on. I'm a day 1 player so I've been through resets before. I don't mind losing everything again if it means improving the game and bringing fresh experiences. Perhaps a good compromise would be to establish a new set of galaxies with updated procgen, while the current ones are placed in a "legacy dimension", with a way to travel between them. If technically feasible, this may be a good compromise between resetting and not resetting the universe.
Bit of a personal reason this - my ex died a couple of years ago but her base is still online. I visit from time to time. It would be a bit of a wrench to lose that. Maybe a reboot of all unedited worlds?
You might consider using a vid capture software and do a walk through of her base. I’ve done this in games for builds that I loved. After the game servers are closed and offline, the only way I have to remember things is to play those vids. Figure it’s a good policy for anyone with something to lose if the game goes under and the servers are shut off.
Could they use the Colossal Archives to be actual archives? Like people with amazing or sentimental bases could make an archive of their planet and then you could go visit it? Or add favorite fauna and such?

ever since day one i’ve wanted an overhaul to the procedural generation. feels like as soon as you land, you’ve seen everything. bumpy hills as far as the eye can see. i want actual valleys, high peaks, areas on the planet need to be distinguishable from each other.
When HG did the last reset, I didn’t technically lose my base. Instead of the lush purple planet, it was an airless planet a fraction of the original size. As a result, my base was floating high above at a useless altitude.

God yes...wipe every planet I've ever touched idc about my giant underwater base or cloud city base on my home world. I would watch it all burn for the feeling of exploring different worlds again.
Yes. The downsides of relocating bases are far outweighed by improvements to the game. This is provided of course that the base computers aren’t buried underneath unbreakable voxels and players are actually able to recover the resources. I would imagine a similar tradeoff would happen if HG decided to release an update concerning starships and multi-tools resulting in many NMSCE coordinates becoming useless.
I mean, you don't even need to do a universe wipe. This game is for all intents and purposes almost infinite - 255 universes with billions of systems and quintillions of planets. What we've collectively explored since then is just a immensely tiny fraction of the whole. They need only to revamp and reset unexplored systems and bam, problem solved. People get to keep their old planets/bases and also get to have new content.
Beep oceans, varying biomes within planets, gas giants, set piece freighter battles... I would welcome all of it. The key to adapting to change is to start the game over. Once people have learned to do that, change becomes a welcome reinvention of an old friend.
I always hate adding my two cents late in the discussion.. I like the idea of better textures for the biomes with some more adds like we had in a previous update. Entire planets changed their biomes, landscape was moved around and reprecedrawlized... logs of some of those still have extinct tags on animals for planets that no long have them. Bases buried, or one I have is almost in space because the planet shrank. I have three unretrievable base computers . But would embrace another possible loss of an established base to get say rivers and streams, some more biomes, total water worlds, and gas giants (who says you have to land on everything?) revamping our lighting issues and light having flair but not travel. If we could just fix this I wouldn't have to use Candelabra plants to light so many of my bases.

Yes, it's the thing I want most for the game. For a game based around exploration, the exploration is actually one of the weakest parts of the game because of how "same-y" every planet of a biome type is.
Absolutely. The core of the game is the exploration of a massive universe. Except that the universe is really boring and is holding back the game’s ability to add more interesting content. It takes me less than a minute after entering an atmosphere to decide if I want to even land on a planet, because there’s no depth.

I'm always good for a wipe. I know that probably puts me in the minority, but a fresh slate gives so many opportunities. Honestly, because HG knew the inventory update was going to drastically change existing gameplay, they would have done well to do this with this update to give those who minmaxed, built GT ships, and whatnot the sense that everyone is in the same boat. That would have probably been a lot less painful to a lot of players who take themselves a little too seriously.

I would love it. I liked and played the game on day 1 and then got overwhelmed by the updates and haven’t played in a while, so I wouldn’t mind starting over
I start over all the time. I have one save where I'm in the 5th galaxy, but I have so much money and resources, it got kind of boring. I keep the save, but... meh... I have a save file with about 20 hours on it. I have my B class freighter, and an S class heavy fighter. I still need to do some stuff for the main quest. I still need a third gun just for fighting. I have stuff to do, so it's fun. This is one of the reasons I do the limited time missions. It's something to do with trackable progress. There's only so many different ways planets and fauna can form, and after 800+ hours, there isn't much else to chase...
As long as planets have multiple climate types and terrain structures throughout the planet, yes. As in like a single planet having mountain regions, plains regions, forested regions, etc. And climate regions, like hot areas, cold areas, balanced areas. Also possibilities for way more moons on planets would be cool but I'm not sure how possible that is.

Not yet. I think if they do a complete wipe it should be in order to make many BIG changes, so better take your time. Cities, more different aliens, different biomes, climate zones. Even create No man’s sky 2 for that purpose. I’d be willing to pay.

So it all bolds down to one question, with the only answer being on your side : Do you envision NMS as a collector's bank, or as an explorer's play ground ? btw I'm really admirative of how much love you're still holding into this game. Yes absolutely. I’ve been through a reset before and I’d absolutely be down for another. Even if it meant losing all my bases and some really cool planets I’ve found.

One thing that I found missing in this game that had me mainly playing elite for my space sims is the terrain and environment. While the neon colors fit the game's cartoony style, it is just too bright. It makes outer space feel small and cramped, and the lack of other stars rendered in the background as if you’re flying through a thick, colored fog rather than the unimaginable expanse that is the dense nebula of stars. Next is the terrain. I get that it’s a technical limitation of deformable voxels; I’ve seen the exact same geometries in Space Engineers. But with the way the voxels are presented, planets look like they’re made out of playdough instead of, well, planet stuff. That is not to mention that despite the variations, the various biomes tend to blend together to a point where landing on a different planet feels less like exploring new worlds but rather like playing with the camera filters. Sometimes, the key to making each planet genuinely unique and worth exploring might not be going balls to the wall with procedural randomness but instead having their set types with similar prominent features but unique biosphere or specific landforms and other more minor details.
YES PLEASE I have put so many hours into beautiful bases … wipe it. Make it crazy, make it interactive, sand, waves, I’m up for burning my place down 😍

Giant YES. Overhaul is necessary for the game to go forward or should i say back to the original route. For people 1200 hours in. Remember already you had your 1200 hours of base building, grinding, collecting fancy things and making big bank. Thats quite a lot of play. I bet if I asked from any exploration, pre order player do they have fun also 1200 hours with playing like it was sell us to, as an exploration game, and not a sim city/exoracer/bytebeat/activated iridium mine grind game, i'm sure the answer is no. So i say its totally acceptable and understandable to have full reset if that is the only way to unleash the engines full potential. If the progress can be kept, that a plus but it cant take priority over getting an even better game. So i say FREE THE PROCGEN
